people, it can get a little rough,” Walton sated. “Plus, some parents are losing jobs, which will add to the trauma of the families. We want to create a plan (to offer) mental health counseling.” Despite the challenges, Walton said there is a positive to be found during this challenging time. “No one could predict the crisis, but we’ve had a great response from volunteers, donors and staff people,” he said. “The virus has exposed some weaknesses in our system in how to respond to a crisis, but it also has brought out the greatness of our society. So many people are trying to help and do their part even if they can’t leave their homes. We are seeing some of the tragedy, but we are also seeing the resiliency of the community.” Walton added that The POINT is seeking financial donations as well as donations of gift cards. For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/ parkesburg.point or www.parkesburgpoint.com. The Parkesburg POINT is a faith-based community center that serves youths ages 8 to 18 in the Octorara and Coatesville Area school districts. Now in its 17th year, The POINT offers after-school programming and daily evening meals. The POINT currently has 500 registered students who enjoy academic support and recreational programs. The motto of the center is “Every Child Deserves Hope.”

In addition to providing food, The POINT’s staff members have been connecting with parents, inquiring about their needs and providing crisis support. Additionally, The POINT is holding Zoom meetings with students, as well as virtual Bible studies and small group studies. The goal of these programs is to keep connected to the students and to learn how they are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing and the stay-at-home order. “Our goal is to keep in touch with them and give them inspiration,” Walton said. “How are they processing this? What is going on their lives? We want to support them and see what some of the needs are that will appear over time.” Walton pointed out that many youths are having a difficult time dealing with the isolation, which may result in mental health issues. “It is very traumatizing to everyone, but if you are in a home that is small with a lot of

Generous sponsors that have committed to giving on that day will also be spotlighted, including matching sponsorships from individuals and local businesses totaling $15,000 of the $25,000 the ministry hopes to raise. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses have been forced to close their doors. Essential businesses are still up and running, including many garden nurseries and plant farms. This is great news for people who are finding the time to tackle garden and yard tasks they have been putting off. Growing fruits, vegetables and herbs have become the new norm for many families. Due to limited travel and stay-at-home orders, people are focusing more on local efforts than ever before. The victory gardens of World War II are coming back. Many are calling them victory gardens 2.0 or co-op gardens. Whatever they are called, local residents are invited to begin planting now and plant some extra this year to share with others. Nurseries and plants farms have adapted to the coronavirus restrictions, which includes keeping safe distances, sanitizing work and public areas and doing business a little differently while still providing their customers

Mushroom Festival Canceled

R058039

For the first time in its history, the annual Kennett Square Mushroom Festival, scheduled this year for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, has been canceled, due to increasing safety concerns expressed by its board of directors in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The board’s decision to cancel this year’s festival dovetails with the nearly global cancellation of many large-scale, highly attended events of its kind around the world. Locally, however, executive director Kathi Lafferty said that the decision to cancel this year’s festival also stemmed from the financial impact the virus is having on the local mushroom industry. The festival, which was to celebrate its 35th year in 2020, began in 1986 when a small group of mushroom enthusiasts wished to hold a public event to celebrate the impact of mushroom growing and mushroom product distribution in Kennett Square, which has long been known as “The Mushroom Capital of the World.” From those beginnings, which encompassed a two-block distance, the Mushroom Festival has grown to a mile-long venue that draws an average of 100,000 visitors to Kennett Square on the second weekend in September, as well as a full lineup of events, exhibits, contests, children’s entertainment and more than 250 vendors. Facilitated by its volunteer organizing committee, the Mushroom Festival has donated more than $1 million of its proceeds since 1986 to a wide variety of charities and organizations that benefit the residents of Kennett Square and the surrounding communities. Despite the cancellation of its 2020 event, the impact of the Mushroom Festival will continue to be strong in the community this year. The festival’s board of directors has announced that $25,000 in grants raised from the proceeds of the 2019 festival will be disbursed throughout the Kennett Square community to help fund the efforts of those individuals and organizations who are assisting in the fight to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Contributions will also be made to local fire companies and first responders. In addition, the festival will sponsor a Mushroom Soup and Wine Evening, which will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, as well as hold the annual New Year’s Mushroom Drop event on Thursday, Dec. 31.

new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers.” For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. Bonnie Kleinhans is in her second year overseeing the 32 plots, each measuring 30 by 20 feet. “We are blessed with the land and wanted to share it with others and to interact with the community,” explained Kleinhans. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. Joshua Wenger of Wenger’s Greenhouse in Lititz emphasized the value of a family gardening project and offered helpful tips for those daunted by the thought of getting started. “Start small, keep it simple the first year, then branch out with experience,” Wenger suggested. “Imported vegetables cannot equal the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of homegrown fruits and vegetables.” As with any worthwhile

Mother's Day Gifts!

endeavor, there are sure to be challenges along the way, but a little effort goes a long way. Taking care of weeds before they get out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best botany classes are hands-on digging in the dirt and tending growing plants,” Wenger shared. “Dedicate time daily or

weekly to weeding, watering, and pruning and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest.” Lancaster and Chester counties are known for their farms and family-owned operations. Whether the goal is organic, homegrown produce or a refreshing array of blooms, the answers to getting started on a gardening adventure can be found right within the local community.

something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture. “Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time,” added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product,” Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before they even begin. However, area experts can provide valuable insight to these issues. More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio,” she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for

The Judicial Conduct Board of Pennsylvania recently announced the appointments of Magisterial District Judge William C. Wenner, K. Celeste Trusty, and Wayne Evans to the 12-member board. Wenner and Trusty will serve four-year terms while Evans will serve the balance of an unexpired fouryear term with eligibility for reappointment. Gov. Tom Wolf appointed Evans and Trusty to serve as nonlawyer elector (lay) members of the board. Their terms commenced on Feb. 20 and March 1, respectively. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court appointed Wenner to serve as the magisterial judge member of the board. His term commenced on March 14. The Judicial Conduct Board is an independent body of Pennsylvania citizens comprised of three judges, three lawyers, and six lay members. Half of the board members are appointed by the governor and half by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Board members serve four-year terms, without pay, and no more than half of the board’s appointed members may be from the same political party. In early March, hospital administration at University Hospital in Cleveland reached out to Sew It Online, a sewing and craft shop, about the hospital’s need of more masks. After working with medical professionals to create a medically approved mask, Sew It Online began creating masks and shared a tutorial on YouTube on how to make face masks for hospitals. The video garnered hundreds of thousands of views which prompted the launch of #MillionMaskChallenge, a global sew-a-thon aimed at supporting health care workers and others in need. To view the video, readers may visit www.youtube.com and search for “Tutorial: How to Sew a Face Mask for Hospitals.” To join the challenge, individuals should first watch the instructional video on YouTube. Second, they can download the pattern for medical masks by visiting www.sewitonline.com. Third, individuals can complete their project, and fourthly, they can donate the masks and post a photo on social media using #millionmaskchallenge. The challenge comes on the heels of the CDC recommendation that people wear masks when in public. The response for the challenge has been overwhelming and tens of thousands of people have already joined in. Sew It Online continues making masks and coordinating shipments from all over the world to places in need. For more information, including a link to the tutorial, readers may visit www.sewitonline.com.

For people who are going stir crazy and looking for things to do with their dog while quarantined at home, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is available to help. Readers may check out the AKC’s resources by visiting www.akc.org. In addition, individuals and their canine friends are invited to participate in a variety of daily activities in the AKC’s #Wooffromhome Challenge. Each activity falls under one of several themes - DIY, Trick, Health, or Bon/Love - and utilizes common household items. Participants may be featured on the AKC’s Instagram account.
