Sew Much Love For Helping Others By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Anyone with an interest in sewing or crocheting is welcome to join Sew Much Love to turn their talents toward helping others. Meeting at the Parkesburg Mennonite Church each month, Sew Much Love volunteers work on a variety of projects, including making prayer shawls, pillowcases for hospitalized children, dresses for girls in Africa and more. “We’ve been here in this church four years. Before that, Patty Naftziter and Sheila Williamson and I would go into Ephrata to a quilt shop that did the pillowcases (for hospitalized children). That’s how I got started,” organizer Jane Rudewick explained. “When the quilt shop decided not to do it anymore, we decided to bring it here.” Rudewick is a member of Parkesburg

Mennonite Church, but the group is not limited to church members. “I like the community here,” said volunteer Judy Lobasso. “I’m not a member of the church, but I come to church here sometimes and I love the women in the group. I was encouraged and made to feel I belonged.” Sewers of all skill levels are welcome. Sewing machines are available at the church hall but participants are welcome to bring their own if they wish. “We find ways to get the material ourselves with funds that are donated, or we find other quilt shops that will donate from time to time,” Rudewick said, explaining that the fabric pieces are pre-cut and assembled into kits for the volunteers. “We have them already pre-done so the ladies, when they come in, don’t have to bring material. All they have to do is bring their sewing machines and themselves and be willing to work,” she shared. See Sew Much Love pg 2

Jane Rudewick (left) and Patty Naftziter (right), along with Sheila Williamson (not pictured), lead the monthly meetings of Sew Much Love at Parkesburg Mennonite Church. The group makes sewing and needlework projects for a variety of missions locally and worldwide.

donated guitars to the VA, which recently implemented a music program to teach veterans to play guitars. DD831 also assists veterans transitioning from homelessness to independent living through the Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Support Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The charity provides appliances, household goods, personal care products and financial assistance for rent and utilities. “More than 475 beds have been purchased for previously homeless veterans,” Turner reported. Most recently, the charity secured items, including small appliances, electronics and new clothing, from Hands In Service Inc., a charity based in Warrington. On May 1 from 2 to 4 p.m., veterans were invited to “shop” for the items on display in the Great Hall at the Coatesville VA at no cost. Jr., who was a cashier at the canteen at the VA hospital when he died in 2009 at the age of 20 from a suspected heart arrhythmia. While working there, he discovered that many of the veterans did not have basic necessities such as underwear and socks. Turner explained that the first David’s Drive picnic was held on May 22, 2010, on what would have been David’s 21st birthday. At the time, the family chose to celebrate David’s life with a picnic in the backyard and to honor his wish to help veterans by holding an underwear drive for veterans. As a way to honor David’s memory and to continue the charitable work in his name, the family started the DD831 charity in 2010. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you” because the phrase contains eight letters and three words that have one meaning. Turner said that people are invited to drop by on May 19 with their donations and enjoy a bite to eat. There will also be picnic games, including volleyball and horseshoes. “Triple Fresh Market will give us four hours of catering,” Turner said. “David worked there when he was kid, and they have been good to David’s Drive.” On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, DD831 volunteers will meet at East Fallowfield Park and then travel to the Coatesville VA to drop off donated items that were col-

lected during the David’s Drive picnic. Residents may drop off donations at the park prior to the start of the trip. “We will leave the park at noon and do a procession/parade to the VA to drop off the donations. Modena and Westwood fire companies will join us and some police departments in the area,” said Turner, noting that the charity is successful because of the community that supports it. “If people didn’t show up and donate, we would not be delivering truckloads of underwear.” In addition to collecting necessities, David’s Drive sponsors social events for veterans. Last year, DD831 purchased tickets and provided transportation for veterans to attend a Philadelphia 76ers game and a preseason game of the Philadelphia Eagles. It has also sponsored two fishing trips for about a dozen veterans. Every Christmas, volunteers wrap and distribute 1,000 gifts for patients at the Coatesville, Southeastern Pennsylvania and Lebanon VA medical centers. In April this year, David’s Drive provided

Cars For Kacie Car Show Slated The Cars for Kacie Car Show, an indoor/outdoor car, truck, and motorcycle show, will take place on Saturday, May 11, at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. The rain date will be Saturday, May 18. The show aims to be the largest car show and opioid recovery show on the East Coast. The show will benefit Kacie’s Cause, which was founded six years ago when Andy Rumford’s 23-year-old daughter, Kacie Erin Rumford, died of an overdose. The Cars for Kacie show was also started at that time to raise money for Kacie’s Cause, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity dedicated to saving lives and spreading awareness about the nationwide opioid epidemic. Registration will be from 8 to 11 a.m., with the show taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature indoor vendors and exhibitors as well as an outdoor car show that organizers anticipate will attract hundreds of show cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Awards will be given out at 3 p.m. The top 30 will receive 40-inch floor trophies, which will be given out by families that have lost a loved one to addiction. There will also be more than 35 specialty category plaques, along with custom-made trophies. Goodie bags will also be handed out. There will be almost a dozen life-size “Hot Wheels” Camaros attending from as far away as Maine, Michigan, and West Virginia. Other cars on display inside will include a 350K Corvette from the movie “Ghost Rider” with more than 2,000 LED lights and custom-painted “Ghost Rider” graphics. Nostalgia Funny Car Racing team’s Nightmare will also be on hand to rev up its engine and provide a rare photo op session. See Car Show pg 8

Each month, the group tackles different projects for local needs and overseas missions. One organization the group works with is Little Dresses for Africa, an international group that has volunteers make simple dresses and boys’ shorts for toddlers through children size 14. In addition to sewing, Sew Much Love also completes crochet projects. “We have a prayer shawl program,” Rudewick said. “If we have somebody who’s having trouble, we take one of these out and pray over it at church or Sunday school and give (it) out to the one who’s having trouble.” Sometimes, making a craft is also included in the day. “There are a lot of things we have our fingers in and try to be creative,” Rudewick said. Donations of fabric or funds for the purchase of material are always welcome. Cotton fabric, flannel and used towels are always appreciated. Meetings are typically held on the final Saturday of each month, but the schedule changes due to holidays. The next meeting is set for Saturday, May 18, beginning at 9 a.m. at Parkesburg Mennonite Church, 44 E. Second Ave., Parkesburg. Anyone interested in taking part may simply drop in. For more information, readers may contact Rudewick at jrudewick@gmail.com. Each month, Rudewick sends an email reminder to participants advising them of the project of the month and any items they may need to bring for that month’s craft. “If they come at 9 a.m., we have coffee and little breakfast items that are provided. They may bring their own lunch if they’re going to spend the day. Sometimes we’re done by 2 p.m.; sometimes we’re out by 4 p.m.,” Rudewick said.

This year’s Relay marks the 25th anniversary of the local event, and it is also is the debut of a new 14-hour format, which replaces the traditional 24-hour Relay. “When we first started this, there were no 5Ks, 10Ks or other (similar) events on weekends. We thought we would try the shortened version to see if that would attract more people,” said Dawn Kirsch, event chair, when explaining the decision to shorten the event. The event, themed “Hope Across the Galaxy,” will begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. A Survivor Celebration of

Life Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., and a Luminaria Ceremony will start at 9 p.m. During this ceremony, the track will be lined with candlelit luminaria bags that have been designated in memory of those

who lost their lives to cancer and in honor of survivors. Luminarias can be purchased up until 8:30 p.m. To keep runners and walkers entertained throughout the event, many activi-

Members of the Octorara Area High School band will perform during the Memorial Day parade in Parkesburg on May 19.

Memorial Day Parade from pg 1 The day will start at 8 a.m. when the VFW officers and members, along with the Auxiliary of VFW Post 4480, will conduct services to honor the deceased veterans at the Cochranville, Glen Run, Atglen Pennington, Zion Hill, Parkesburg Catholic and Upper Octorara cemeteries. Robert Montgomery, after whom the post was named, was killed in action in France during World War II and is buried in the Upper Octorara Cemetery. The parade is scheduled to form at 12:30 p.m. at the former World War I Monument on Main Street, following a short ceremony there. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. It will move west on Main Street to North Culvert Street to West First Avenue. It will continue west on First Avenue to the KVFD. Participants will include the Octorara Area High School band, under the direction of Scott Cullen, and the Octorara Area High School chorus, under the direction of Doreen Smeck. Also featured will be vehicles from the KVFD, local Boy and Girl Scout troops, the VFW Post 4480 Honor Guard and Auxiliary members, the Parkesburg VFW Riders Group and the Emerald Society bagpipers. Uncle Sam, portrayed by Gerry Treadway, will also make an appearance. “There will be more fire trucks in the

parade this year because of the dedication (at KVFD),” Rick noted. All ex-servicemen and women and military personnel home on leave, whether in uniform or not, are invited to participate in the parade as well. Those with physical limitations who are unable to walk the route will be provided with transportation. There will be a Memorial Day ceremony at KVFD at 2 p.m. following the parade. The featured speaker for this year’s event will be Coatesville native Command Sgt. Maj. Jeremiah E. Grow, who serves at Headquarters Command Battalion’s Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia. Rick encourages all local residents to attend the parade and the ceremonies. “Everyone should turn out and pay tribute to the men and women of our community who served our country and the preservation of our way of life,” said Rick. Following the talk, KVFD will celebrate the completion of its building project. There will be a dedication of the new monuments, which honor soldiers lost in all military conflicts, as well as the dedication of the central

station and a housing of apparatus. Speaking for KVFD will be firefighter chaplain Jerry Schwartz, who has 47 years of experience in emergency services, spending nearly 20 years as a firefighter and officer in the Baltimore Fire Department. In addition to events on May 19, VFW members and Boy Scouts will decorate the graves of all deceased veterans from all wars with American flags at the Upper Octorara Cemetery on Friday, May 17, and on Saturday, May 18. All flags will remain on the graves until November. Any relative of a deceased veteran in the Parkesburg area who may need a grave marker should call 610-857-1504. For more information, readers may visit www.parkesburg.org or search for “Parkesburg VFW Post 4480” on Facebook. In the event of inclement weather, parade cancellation information will be posted on the website and Facebook page. Dedication events at the fire department will be held rain or shine. SINGING SPRING FOODS of the Lancaster County trolley system prior to World War II with members of the Leacock Township Historical Society and interested members of the public in a talk he titled “The Lancaster to Gap Trolley Line.” With the aim of helping his audience to become more spatially aware of remnants of the trolley system in the local area, Fisher explored the lack of transportation in the Intercourse area in the early 1900s and then took his listeners on a virtual trolley ride from the center of Lancaster to Coatesville.

Fisher noted that trolleys were a main mode of transportation for local residents traveling from place to place prior to World War II. Fisher showed several photos of the stagecoach that once ran regularly from Intercourse to Lancaster and back. The stage was owned by D. Coleman Diller, for whom Diller Avenue is named. According to Fisher, Diller took passengers back and forth and picked up supplies in Lancaster for members of the Intercourse community, stuffing the boot of the stage with a variety of items. In 1910, Diller bought a truck and used it to ferry items. The stage eventually became the Penn Highway Transit Company. Fisher also displayed a picture of a map that showed the trolley lines running from Lancaster into Gap, Christiana, Coatesville, Kissel Hill, and Lititz, as well as up Route 23 to Blue Ball and other areas of Lancaster County. Fisher then brought his passengers aboard in Lancaster. “We are leaving Lancaster for Christiana,” he said, pointing out sites such as Conestoga View; Bridgeport, where there was a tollhouse at the bridge; and then Lafayette Fire Company. The cemetery located across from Mellinger Mennonite Church and Lancaster Mennonite School along Lincoln Highway were included on the trip, as was Paradise Bible Fellowship Church, which was previously the All Saints Episcopal Church. Photos of the bridge over the train tracks at London Vale Road and the Leaman Place store were included on the trip. Between Paradise and Kinzers, Fisher pointed out where the trolley ran along the tree line to Slaymaker Hill Road, behind the current Kinzer Fire Company. “Here is why people in Kinzers have wide front lawns,” noted Fisher, pointing out how the sidewalk is located at a distance from the road because the trolley ran between the two. “Here is Route 30, and the trolley followed Route 30 from White Chimneys to Bellevue Avenue, and we have a picture of the trolley crossing,” said Fisher. The trolley later passed behind the Bellevue Hotel and near the location of the Gap Town Clock. “The trolley ran here behind these houses along Route 41,” said Fisher. The trolley then ran to Atglen and eventually to Coatesville, where passengers who wanted to continue to take the trolley to Downingtown had to get out and cross the railroad tracks to pick up the next car. Fisher pointed out that a See Trolley Ride pg 9

similar situation occurred in Lititz near the train station. Fisher included photos of a bed of stone put down in Paradise in preparation for laying the trolley tracks. He estimated the photo was taken in 1905 or 1906. Along the way on the simulated journey, Fisher pointed out interesting facts, such as the fact that trolley tracks are set wider than train tracks. Fisher first became interested in the trolleys in 2007. “I was fascinated with old pictures,” said Fisher. “I carried a camera, and I took pictures of pictures, and then I would get in my car and go find the present day location of that picture and match them up.” The Leacock Township Historical Society generally meets informally on the

fourth Monday of the month; however, there will be no meeting in May because the fourth Monday is Memorial Day. The society sets up the Heritage Display, which chronicles the history of the Village of Intercourse, in the Intercourse Community Park, located between Old Philadelphia Pike and East Newport Road, each June during Heritage Days. Upon arriving, Mary finds that the house is visited by the spirit of her Aunt Lily, Archibald’s late wife, who died giving birth to their bedridden son, Colin. The Tri-County Heritage Society in Morgantown will present “The History of the Grace Mine” on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. The program will be held in the community room of the Caernarvon (Berks) Township Municipal Building, 3307 Main St., Morgantown. The former Bethlehem Steel Grace Mine was located along Morgantown Road (Route 10) outside Morgantown. Up to 1,000 people were employed at the mine, which produced iron ore from 1958 until it closed in 1977. Various artifacts and photographic displays will depict the history of the mine during the May 14 program. Past employees of the mine are invited to attend and share their stories. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For further information about the presentation, readers may email tchs@dejazzd.com, call Diane at 610286-6991 or search for “Tri-County Heritage Society” on Facebook. The Tri-County Heritage Society is a nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to collect, preserve and disseminate the history that relates to the people, properties and events of the tri-county area (Berks, Chester and Lancaster). The society’s library, located at 4979 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson, has a collection of genealogical, historical and research records as well as numerous maps and other records. The library is open on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment.
