Octorara to present OABEST Expo
BY FRANCINE FULTONApetting zoo, crafters and vendors, food trucks, first responder displays and live entertainment, as well as student performances and demonstrations, are just some of that activities that will be featured during the annual Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental Science & Technology (OABEST) Expo. The event, which is designed to showcase the best of Octorara, will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the school grounds at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Members of the Octorara Area Career and Technical Education Programs (OACTEP) student advisory board are helping to organize the event along with Mark Peticca, Octorara’s director of career and technical education. Peticca noted that between
1,000 and 1,500 people attend the event over the course of the day.
“It’s open to the entire community,” he said. “We will have a Kids Zone, where they will have a lot of activities like an (inflatable) ax throwing station, and a community yard sale. We will have more than 60 vendors coming this year, including (people) representing their companies, arts and crafts vendors and a lot of food vendors.”
Each area of study in the OACTEP will be represented at the event, including Business, Marketing and Entrepreneurship; Graphic Design and Illustration; Culinary; Home Security and Protective Service Academy; Diversified Occupations’ Woodworking Technology; and Child Care Education.
“We will have a lathe, and we will be making crosses and cutting boards,” noted Johan Torres, a student in the Woodworking Technology program. Photos of the cutting boards can be found
on the newly created OABEST Expo Instagram page.
“We will be doing something with a robot. We might be racing CO2 cars,” noted Gavin Boyer, a student in the Engineering and Drafting Technology program, explaining that CO2 cars are miniature race cars that are propelled by a carbon dioxide cartridge.
“We are running a milkshake truck alongside a petting zoo,” added Daniel Rowe, a student in the Animal and Plant Science Technology program.
Home Security and Protective Service Academy students will be organizing the displays by local first responders, and students in the Child Care Education program will present children’s crafts and pages for kids to color.
Also featured will be a dunk tank, where district administrators will volunteer to get dunked.

Youngsters learn about equine therapy during library story time
BY FRANCINE FULTONMoores Memorial Library recently took its story time program on the road by holding the event at WaterGap Stables in Christiana.
The story time featured all the traditional elements, including a book reading by library director Trish Vandenbosch, followed by a craft. But this time, instead of sitting in the library children’s room encircled by books, the youngsters were surrounded by open pastures with roaming horses that reside at the farm.
They also met Gambler, a miniature therapy horse that is part of WaterGap Stables’ Hooves 4 Healing program. The
nonprofit organization offers animal-assisted therapy to people of all ages, including veterans. For the first half-hour of story time, children were able to brush Gambler and spend time with him. Vandenbosch then

Full gallop - 5K plus 10K scheduled
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Aaron Stoltzfus, one of the organizers of the initial White Horse Gallop and Community Day in 2023, was asked about the success of the event, he said the good weather was a factor. “I thought it went well,” reported Stoltzfus, who noted that 193 runners - twice as many as organizers hoped for - had taken part.
This year, organizers have added a 10K and a number of new activities to the event. The
second White Horse Gallop will be held on Saturday, May 25. Registration at the fire station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap, will open at 7 a.m. The 10K will begin at 8:15 a.m., and the 5K race will start at 8:30 a.m. In addition to the races, a state police officer and a doctor from Lancaster General Hospital will be on site. The White Horse EMS Team will offer attendees the opportunity to learn and practice CPR during the event. Organizers plan to have the smoke trailer, a bounce house,

Library Friends to host plant sale, barbecue
BY FRANCINE FULTONChildren in search of a Mother’s Day gift and anyone looking for plants to enhance their patios or gardens are invited to attend the annual spring plant sale being presented by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library on Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Community Park, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The event will also feature a chicken barbecue.
Plants for sale will include a large assortment of hanging baskets and premade patio containers. “We will have 4-inch pots of geraniums and other flowers that children can buy for Mother’s Day the following day,” said Friends member Kate Valentino, noting that a baseball game is generally taking place in the park during the event. “We have a lot of kids come from the ball field, and they can get
something for mom.”
All plants will be on display in the pavilion at the park. In the case of rain, plants will be available in the Lions Community Building at the park. This year, no bedding plants or herbs will be sold.
“We buy (the flowers) wholesale,” Valentino noted. “We will have more container pots this year because we sold out of them last year.”
Chicken barbecue meals will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The cost of a meal includes a half-chicken, a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Randy Yoder will prepare the chickens on-site.
“We do a half-chicken (rather) than chicken legs,” noted Joan Esworthy, Friends president, adding that the barbecue sells out quickly, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
Check and cash will be accepted

and a mechanical bull ride, as well, and fire trucks will be available for a “touch-a-truck” and demonstrations.
The event will also include a visit from the Life Lion helicopter from Hershey Medical Center if weather permits.
A candy drop from a ladder truck is scheduled at noon.
Organizers have added an extra loop to the 5K course to create a 10K route. As in the past, runners will leave the fire company and travel south on Route 897 and return via Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike). Both Route 340 and Route 897 will be closed during the run. Hills will be featured on School Lane Road during
the second mile of the run.
The run will be timed by Pretzel City Sports, and those wishing to participate may register at www .pretzelcitysports.com. Registration forms may also be picked up at the fire company and at local businesses. Each participant will receive a swag bag, and T-shirts will be available while supplies last.
Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners and to the top three males and females in nine age groups, which will be 9 and under, 10 to 14, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and above. Awards will be
crafted by local farrier and blacksmith Eli Stoltzfus, who owns Lanchester Farrier Services.
Water for runners who take part in the 5K will be provided by Legacy Plumbing.
Food at the event will include breakfast sandwiches, lunch items, and ice cream by donation. Breakfast sandwiches will be served from 7 to 10 a.m., and lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funds raised by the races will help the fire company purchase a single-story portable fire training structure. “It will be used to train

Help wanted
BY FRANCINE FULTONLocal residents looking for volunteer opportunities in the community are invited to attend a Dawg Days at the Park recruitment event on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg.
During the event, being presented by the Parkesburg Consortium of Community Leaders, attendees will be able to visit with leaders of local nonprofit organizations to discuss volunteer opportunities and ask questions.
“There are multiple service organizations and committees in Parkesburg,” said Tina O’Connor, who is a member of the consortium as well as the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC). “Many of those entities need volunteers.”
Organizations that will be represented at the event include PAC, Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission, the Parkesburg Free Library and the Parkesburg Lions Club, as well as the Borough of Parkesburg.
Additionally, Humble Hounds Animal Rescue, a foster-based, allbreed, no-kill animal rescue will be on hand with adoptable dogs. Founded by Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick in 2020, Humble Hounds is in need of volunteers willing to care for rescued dogs until their permanent homes can be found.
“We always need foster families,” said Fitzpatrick. “All of our applications to foster or adopt are on our website, or people can email us for more information.” To learn more, visit http://www.humblehounds.org or http://www.facebook.com/humble houndsanimalrescue or email info@ humblehounds.org.
Dogs are welcome at the upcoming event, and a DIY dog photo booth will be available. Karen’s Pet Clips will be on hand to offer nail trimmings for a fee, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to a local charity.
Pastries from the Baker’s Basket will be available for purchase.
The consortium, which formed in the spring of 2023, is made up of community service organizations in the area. Its first initiative was a community engagement event held at the Keystone Valley Fire Department last April. Attendees were invited to learn about organizations and businesses in the area, as well as upcoming events. “The consortium is a group of leaders that bring those (volunteer) committees together as one,”O’Connor added.

Moore about the Civil War
BY ANN MEAD ASHNarvon resident and author Joel Moore is a stickler for details. When presented with the design for the cover of his latest book, “Real Boys of the Civil War,” Moore noticed issues with the equipment the boys were carrying and with their uniforms. He worked with the designer, Gien Carlo Tan, to correct drums and uniforms until he was happy with the look. “It’s gorgeous,” noted Moore of the cover, which depicts more than a dozen boys in Civil War garb.
Moore pointed out that more than 200,000 underaged young men took part in the Civil War. “Real Boys of the Civil War” is Moore’s first work of nonfiction. The book begins with the historiography research
paper Moore originally wrote as a student at West Chester University. The book also tells stories of the individual boys who served, and it finishes with photo selections of many of the young soldiers.
One of the boys included in the book, Nathaniel McClean Gwynne, was still a civilian when he served, but his valor earned him a Medal of Honor. Moore explained that because Gwynne was too young to enlist, he went off to war as a camp helper. “At the battle of Petersburg, (Va.), the captain reminded the boy that he couldn’t go into battle,” said Moore. “(Gwynne responded), ‘That’s not why I’m here,’ and he went in.” Gwynne rescued the flag when the color guard went down, but he lost an arm to cannon fire and suffered a

leg wound as well. When Gwynne’s story made the newspapers, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor.
That is when administrators in Washington, D.C., discovered the war hero was not enlisted. “They backdated his enlistment to when he first joined, and he got full pay,” noted Moore.
Moore, who has been researching and writing about the boys of the war between the states for 20 years, was in communication with professor Jay Hoar, a University of Maine at Farmington retiree, until Hoar’s death in 2023. Moore has permission to use Hoar’s research, and Moore included Hoar’s story of Benjamin Franklin
Williams of Georgia in the book. Williams was a member of the home guard - boys as young as 6 years old who served as lookouts, couriers, and supply movers, among other duties. “Williams became a wagoneer at age 7, and he served the entire four years of the war,” relayed Moore, adding, “At age 11, he was a veteran.”
Moore is known for his many works of historical fiction, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.” “Real Boys of the Civil War was launched at Moores Memorial Library, Christiana, on April 27. Moore will be featured at several upcoming

“We have 15 horses in the program, and it ranges from Gambler, our smallest, (to larger) riding horses,” said Scott. “Classes are all individualized. Sometimes I have had a few people who don’t touch the horses for a couple of years, and they are nervous. It takes them a while.”
Participants can also join in other classes. “We also run a lesson program so when they come, they are not singled out as someone (who is in need of a therapy),” said Scott. “We are one big, happy family.”

In addition to providing equine therapy, Hooves 4 Healing recently began a women’s group that meets on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. Attendees can walk around the site’s outdoor track while enjoying fresh air and also have an opportunity to meet other local women. The program is free to join, but donations for the therapy program are welcome.
She added that Gambler has also been taught to “shake hands,” a trick that is usually reserved for canines.
Scott emphasized that although animal therapy is designed for people with autism or other special
