Expo to showcase the best of Octorara

Plans are currently underway for the annual Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental Science & Technology (OABEST) Expo that will take place on Saturday, May 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Among the planned festivities are a student art show, a petting zoo, a craft show, children’s activities, a mobile video game truck, a tractor show and displays by student and community organizations.

Students from the Octorara Area Career and Technical Education Programs (OACTEP) are helping to organize the event along with Lisa McNamara, director of career and technical education for the Octorara Area School District.

“Planning (for OABEST) starts in October. We have about 2,000 people attend this event,” said McNamara, noting that students in each of the OACTEP areas of study are

planning certain aspects of the day. New attractions this year will include a community job fair and a community yard sale.

Students in the Business, Marketing and Entrepreneurship program will help with the job fair during which participants will be able to speak with representatives from local companies that are hiring.

“We are doing mock job interviews,” noted student Denise Washington.

“We will ask people interview questions and (discuss) what the company looks for in an employee to help them be prepared for their on-site interviews they will be doing at the job fair.”

For the yard sale, residents of the Octorara Area School District are invited to set up a table in a 10-by-10-foot space and sell their gently used items. There is no fee to participate.

Also new this year is a cornhole tournament fundraiser for Kacie’s Cause. For more information, contact Kristen Brown at kristen.kaciescause@gmail.com.

Rock Ford exhibit examines decorative arts

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced a new Focus Exhibit in the Snyder Gallery for its 2023 season. The exhibit is “The Market Town and the Metropolis: 18thCentury Lancaster and Its Artistic Connections to Philadelphia.”

Throughout most of the 18th century, Philadelphia remained the largest city in the American colonies and then in the fledgling United States. In many ways, it was America’s political, financial and cultural epicenter. During this same period, the borough of Lancaster was one of the largest non-coastal towns in America and was closely tied to Philadelphia both commercially and culturally. In addition to serving as a source of raw materials, food and supplies for Philadelphia as well as an important market for its

Survey to identify internet availability

Chester County’s government has created a short survey aimed at identifying locations where internet service is either nonexistent or extremely limited.

The information provided by this survey will assist organizations, internet service providers, and municipalities in drafting and submitting a complete and accurate application for both state and federal broadband expansion dollars.

The survey can be found at www.chesco.org/broadband survey. It will be open until Friday, May 19.

The Adult Tutoring Program currently has a need for volunteers who are willing to work with an adult student seeking to learn English as a second language, study for the GED exam or improve

basic literacy. A four-year college degree is required to tutor, but a teaching background is not needed.

“We have an ongoing need for volunteer tutors, as we have about 60 people on our

waiting list,” said Chiavetta. “These are mostly ESL students with a few (students in need of) Adult Basic Education as well.”

Tutor training is offered online by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Tutors are asked to meet with their student three hours per week, usually done in two 90minute sessions. Pairs can meet in person at the Chester County Library in Exton, where the OIC program is based; other libraries in the Chester County Library System; or other mutually convenient sites such as a coffee shop or the cafe section of a grocery store. They also may choose to meet virtually.

For more information about the program, including how to become a volunteer tutor, call the Adult Tutoring Program office at 610-3444013; contact Debbie Rikess, program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org; or visit www.ccoic.org/adult-education /adult-tutoring.

Golf outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play

in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was created in 1999, and it has continued to

grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. For more information, visit www.goodsamservices.org.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by

local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster

are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their

clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epc golfouting.com/register.

On April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be

a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.

Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the

Summer camp preparation tips

Summer camp season will soon be here. Throngs of children will board buses each morning or pack their parents’ cars full of essentials to survive a few weeks away from home. Families getting prepared for camp may consider the following suggestions to ensure that kids have an enjoyable time away.

and kids are urged to ask questions about specific programs. Counselors can direct campers toward activities they may enjoy.

Note: Some of the information here has been extracted from Joan Lorenz’s “A History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.” It is Lorenz who, while gathering that history, also gathered together history-minded members of the community to form what became the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, which is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year.

Lorenz’s book stated, “Salisbury Township was created in 1729, however its geological history goes back to the time when the area was an inland sea just beginning to form the limestone trap, quartzite, granite, gneiss and shales that make up our rolling tableland between the Welsh Mountains and the Gap Hills.”

Imagine this southeastern region of Pennsylvania long ago as the seas receded. It began to change to a sub-tropical hot and humid climate during the Jurassic Age. The dinosaurs that had lumbered about North America during hotter, drier centuries changed, too. The huge birdlike coelurosaur adapted living in the hot, humid swamps of Pennsylvania. Modern discoveries have revealed that this creature had primitive feathers. In fact, this large early “bird” is considered to be the forefather of even the tiny house wren of today.

When Lorenz was researching her book, she was told about a petrified footprint that had lain in the spring of the Spring Garden Hotel. Years before, John Price from the North Museum, which is part of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, had examined that footprint and declared it was the imprint of an ostrich-like coelurosaur from the late Jurassic Era. Clara Hamilton of Spring Garden then donated the

When selecting a camp, parents may want to find out if the camp is accredited. To receive accreditation, camps must meet more than 300 standards related to program quality, safety, and health, according to the American Camp Association.

A child’s readiness also should be considered. There is no magic age when a child will be ready to go to camp, but generally, kids who are ages 7 or 8 may be able to start a resident sleep-away camp. Kids may begin day camp as early as age 3, the same age many kids begin attending preschool. Parents should consider whether the child has spent time away from home at friends’ or family members’ houses; without these preparatory experiences, kids might be better off attending a day camp.

Much of summer camp will likely be smooth sailing, but it is reasonable to expect some bumps along the way. Campers should not expect perfection, but instead, if something goes awry, they should use the situation as a learning experience on how to handle adversity and try to find the fun in it anyway. Even a medical situation can be overcome, particularly because camps staff qualified medical personnel to ensure children are safe and well.

Summer camp can be a great experience, especially when families take pre-camp measures aimed at ensuring kids have a fun season.

footprint to the museum for safekeeping.

Hearing of this connection to the local distant past, Lorenz, accompanied by Melvin Robinson and John Oberholser, who was a Salisbury Township supervisor at the time, visited the North Museum to look at the footprint firsthand. They also saw the mammoth tooth originally found in White Horse by an unknown person while digging a ditch. This tooth has been identified as being from the Pleistocene Era, which included the last Ice Age, even earlier than the footprint.

The North Museum agreed to create plaster casts of these two bits of the area’s ancient history. Today, the historical society displays these replicas in its glass case at the Salisbury Township Building, 5581 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, for all visitors. And the North Museum, as part of its student STEM program, has a geology study kit that includes Salisbury Township’s mammoth molar.

As residents walk and drive throughout the township, think of the bones of the extinct creatures that still lie beneath their feet. Who will be the next to find a dinosaur bone or tooth?

Parents are encouraged to enable children to connect with fellow campers. If possible, attend a meet-and-greet prior to the start of the season. Neighborhood day camps tend to draw kids from local communities, so there is already a chance kids will know a few fellow campers.

Once at camp, kids should introduce themselves to camp counselors and other program directors early on,

nections between both in the fields of the decorative arts increasingly flourished. Lancaster furniture makers developed unique styles that, while clearly influenced by Philadelphia artisans, did not merely mimic them. Artisans, such as furniture

makers Thomas Tufft and Peter Frick, worked in both Lancaster and in Philadelphia. Examples of works attributed to both men will be included in this exhibit and demonstrate influences from both Philadelphia and Lancaster.

The exhibit will also highlight local tastemakers who were exposed to new styles through their personal connections to Philadelphia and brought these styles to Lancaster. The exhibit will include a rare, late 18th-century Philadelphia Chippendale camelback sofa believed to have belonged to Judge Jasper Yeates; the sofa is part of a private family collection and has never before been publicly exhibited.

Also included among Lancaster County tastemakers were affluent persons who had their portraits painted in Philadelphia. The exhibit features a portrait of Lancaster County Judge Henry Slaymaker by John Hesselius and a portrait of Henry’s wife, Faithful Richardson Slaymaker, by

John’s father, Gustavus Hesselius, an early Swedish immigrant to Philadelphia. These portraits are also part of a private collection and have not been publicly exhibited since 1971 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

The Richard C. von Hess Foundation is the Founding Sponsor for this exhibit. This exhibit is also funded in part through a grant approved by the Americana Corner Preserving America Grant Program.

“We will pick up all the plants on Friday, and the Lions Club allows us to store them overnight in their building,” noted Friends president Joan Esworthy. “We get there early Saturday morning to set up. We will use all the picnic tables to (display) the plants.”

She said that the hanging baskets are a big seller each year. “We will probably bring at least 20 to 30 hanging baskets,” Esworthy said. “It’s Mother’s Day weekend, and a lot of people like to give them to mom or grandmom.”

Chicken barbecue meals will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The cost of a meal includes a half-chicken, a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Randy Yoder will prepare the chickens on-site.

All proceeds from the plant sale and chicken barbecue, as well as the Friends’ annual golf tournament and book sales, benefit the many activities offered by the library, including the Summer Reading Program.

“Twice a year, we combine the monies from fundraisers and make (a donation) to the library,” said Esworthy. “Everything is for the library.”

The Friends also operate the Read Moore Book Store, which is located in the lower level of the library. The bookstore offers new and gently used books for sale, as well as a children’s corner and a section for young adults. The bookstore will be open on May 13 from 8 a.m. to noon. More information about the bookstore is available at www.facebook.com/Read MooreBookStore.

Those interested in supporting the library and joining the Friends are invited to attend a meeting of the group. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the library at 2 p.m. More information about the group is available at www.face book.com/FriendsOfThe MooresMemorialLibrary.

Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The library is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.

Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.

John J. Herman, chief executive officer with Penn

Medicine Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The con-

struction of this facility keeps state-of-the-art care here in Lancaster.”

County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.

Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple

syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease

playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”

Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to

build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”

The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree.

Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.”

Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.

More information about the clinic may be found at www.ClinicforSpecial Children.org.

created the Mountainside Brighter Future College Scholarship to foster awareness and education about addiction among youths and empower students who have been impacted by substance use disorders to share their stories. Through providing academic scholarships, the treatment center hopes to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders, encourage youths not to be ashamed to share their struggles, and educate others on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Interested students will need to complete an initial

application and then submit a short essay explaining how they have been impacted by their own or a loved one’s substance use disorder. The writing sample should also detail how the student’s personal experiences have shaped his or her understanding of addiction as a disease.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Monday, May 15, and winners will be announced on or around Monday, June 5. For more information about the scholarship and the essay guidelines, visit https://mountainside.com /scholarships/brighter-future.

Craft ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a special time for children to show their appreciation for their mothers and grandmothers as well as the other special women in their lives. Older children are typically capable of designing their own Mother’s Day crafts or even shopping for gifts, while younger children will likely need some help from an adult.

Youngsters may not be able to take charge of Mother’s Day festivities alone, but they have the energy and enthusiasm to chip in. Handmade craft gifts are a thoughtful way for young kids to show their love for their mom. Even the youngest of children can create something special.

All that is necessary for a handprint butterfly photo card is a printed photograph of the child’s face, paper, scissors, glue, and finger paints. The child should dip his or her hands into the paint and make four handprints on paper in some preferred colors. When dry, cut around the perimeter of the handprints. These will serve as the wings of the butterfly. The picture of the child’s face should be glued in the middle of a piece of paper or card stock. A butterfly body should be drawn underneath it, or a stock image may be printed out and used. Anten-

nae can then be drawn sticking out of the child’s head, and the handprints can be attached around the butterfly body to make the wings. For another craft, children can draw and color on a large sheet of construction paper or another durable paper. An adult can then use another sheet of paper to make a frame mat of sorts, cutting out a heart shape from the middle. Both pieces of paper should be trimmed to the dimensions of a photo frame. The heart matting should be placed over the artwork so that the artwork will show through the heart shape. Everything can be framed together for a lasting memento.

Kids can make their mother a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt. A photo of the child’s face should be printed and attached to a piece of circular card stock that is roughly six inches in diameter. The child can paint a popsicle stick green and then attach that to the back of the round card stock. The child can then glue small, fuzzy pompoms to the card stock surrounding the picture to make a flower. If desired, a magnet can be attached to the back of the flower so it can be secured to the refrigerator.

From July 2021 to June 30, 2022, Meals on Wheels of Chester County delivered more than 94,000 meals to 834

DVGRR frompg 11

Additionally, DVGRR will hold an outdoor concert on Saturday, May 20, from 4 to 9 p.m. at its facility. The rain date is Sunday, May 21. The band will feature DVGRR’s own Heather Hatt, who plays with local band 4Play. For one night only, the band will take on the name FURR PLAY.

In addition to Hatt on keyboard, the band includes Randy Gartner on bass guitar, Mike Schwartz on lead guitar, and Rob Schwartz on drums and lead vocals. The band plays ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s classic rock.

One dog per handler will be welcome, but people are asked to consider the sound sensitivity of their dogs before bringing them. Dogs must remain on a leash of 6 foot maximum length, and no flexi leashes will be allowed. Attendees may bring yard chairs or blankets.

Attendees may register for the concert only or for the

clients, 94% of whom are over the age of 60. The annual “March for Meals” celebration commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors age 60 and up. This support and federal funding have fueled the growth of the Meals on Wheels network for more than 50 years.

Additionally, dog adopters Dan and Sandy Clouser along with their golden retriever Youkilis will be on hand to discuss their published children’s book “Four Paws and Six Wheels Across America: The Adventures of Youkilis, the Golden Retriever.” Youkilis was adopted as a puppy from DVGRR and is now traveling across the country.

Individuals are encouraged to register by Friday, May 12, at www.dvgrr.org/2023 furrplayconcert or by calling 717-484-4799. A higher admission fee will be charged on the day of the event, and no meal will be included. Proceeds will benefit dogs in the rescue’s care.
