sked what brings him to a monthly meeting of area pastors, Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, replied, “It’s the laughter. For me, that’s big. There’s an exhaling that takes place (with this group).” Audrey Kanagy, pastor of Ridgeview Mennonite Church, echoed Feather’s sentiments regarding his comfort level with the group. “It is more about camaraderie than comparison and competition,” she said. Other members of the group, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., waxed more philosophical. Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, noted that the organization defines poverty as a lack of resources, with one of those being

conference call. “At first it was only five or six pastors, and now we are at 10 to 12,” reported Rogers. During the virtual meetings, the group members discussed a variety of subjects related to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns, such as masking, small group meetings, and the response of church leaders and members to that season of constant change. Because the meetings were conducted virtually, attendance was not limited to a specific area. In January of 2021, the group began writing the devotional “Trust Me,” which is based on the promises of God found throughout the Bible. The devotional was made available in both booklet and virtual formats. In the spring of 2021, the pastors began gathering monthly at each other’s churches. “We asked if there was value to in-person gathering, and we felt there was because we

had developed a friendship and a camaraderie,” said Rogers, who recalled that group members toured each other’s facilities and enjoyed lunch and conversation. A recent meeting at Maple Grove Mennonite Church in Atglen featured soup, salad, quiche, and cookies prepared by pastor Mike Clemmer. “We’ve asked, ‘What does it mean to be the churches together?’” said Rogers. “We look at some professional questions and bigger collaborative questions.” In addition to Gateway, Grace Point, Ridgeview, and Maple Grove, churches taking part in the gatherings include Hershey Mennonite, Branch Community, Pequea Baptist, Keystone, and Calvary Monument Bible. spiritual. “As we collaborate to connect people to resources, it’s important for The Factory to stay engaged with spiritual resources in the community, which are represented by this group,” said Nagle. The gathering, which currently includes pastors from churches as far east as Coatesville and west as Paradise, has roots in the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions it brought about. Tim Rogers, pastor of Grace Point Church of Paradise, recalled that by late 2020, pastors were struggling with the ramifications of government requirements. “We were all in a situation we had never been in, and we didn’t know what to do,” said Rogers. “There were unique challenges churches faced.” Instead of sitting alone in their offices, the pastors began calling each other, which led to a twice-monthly virtual

Pine Creek Animal Hospital will hold an open house and Brandie’s Hope fundraiser on Saturday, May 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. In addition to hospital tours and demonstrations, the event will include free food and snacks, such as hot dogs, and there will be a bounce house and other children’s activities. Another highlight of the open house will be a kids’ clinic, during which children may bring a stuffed animals to examine with the help of Dr. Ashley Tuma, veterinarian. A special free event, Warriors on the Water Ltd., hosted by Jim Neary’s Live Bait and Tackle, will be held on Saturday, May 14, at the Octorara Reservoir to celebrate veterans, first responders and members of law enforcement. The day will feature fun, food, fishing and a chance to relax in the outdoors. Events will begin at 8 a.m., when coffee and freshly made doughnuts will be served. The nonprofit Warriors on the Water has been active for nine years, with Gina Neary as organizer. “It’s designed to be a fun, relaxing day to enjoy with family, where you don’t have to pay and you’re appreciated and thanked and honored,” said Gina. Warriors on the Water focuses on providing outdoor recreational therapy, primarily through fishing and boating. This will be the second edition of the annual event after a year’s break in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Warriors on the Water Ltd. is the largest of several events held monthly through October at the reservoir. During the events, veterans and other emergency service providers are given an opportunity to escape from daily stressors by experiencing a day of

Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed

is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are

more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German

shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

become a veterinary technician,” Zimmerman noted. “(People) had no idea how young she was; she was such a responsible person. I told her that she would be the practice manager someday.” Zimmerman noted that the first open house was held in 2019 to announce that Pine Creek Animal Hospital, formerly Atglen Veterinary Hospital, had a new name and new owners. However, open houses in 2020 and 2021 had to be canceled because of the pandemic. New to this year’s event will be an opportunity to win gift baskets. “We have baskets for both pets and humans. That money will go to the nonprofit,” Zimmerman said. “We will also have (free) door prizes for all who attend.” Pine Creek Animal Hospital is located at 150 Pine Creek Drive, Gap. The event is free, but donations will be accepted for the Veterinary Care Foundation in memory of Brandie Kasper, who was a veterinary assistant at Pine Creek. Brandie, 21, and her younger brother, Leonard, 18, passed away on May 22, 2021, in a motor vehicle accident in Mount Joy. “After she passed away, we started receiving donations. This has allowed us to (help pet) owners who cannot afford surgery (for their pet),” said practice manager Doris Zimmerman. She noted that Brandie and Leonard’s parents held a “Cars and Coffee for Kasper” Memorial Car Show at Hempfield High School in June of 2021, which also raised funds for the nonprofit, nicknamed Brandie’s Hope. “The car show donations and anything we have received in Brandie’s name has (allowed us) to offer financial support that provides low- or no-cost care to sick or injured animals,” said Zimmerman. She noted that funds from Brandie’s Hope have already been used for three emergency surgeries on cats. Brandie, who loved animals, was scheduled to graduate from York Technical Institute (YTI) in July 2022. “She was going to YTI to
