Bridge Of Hope Continues To Serve
Almost Like Being There PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual By Ann Mead Ash
When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at www.whereandwhen.com /virtual-pa-family-travel-fair or by See PA Family Travel Fair pg 2
DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon will be among the many destinations highlighted during the virtual PA Family Travel Fair, which can be accessed using the QR code found with the article or by visiting www.whereandwhen.com /virtual-pa-family-travel-fair.

Even though the state of Pennsylvania is under a stay-at-home order, Bridge of Hope Chester County remains active in its mission to serve families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. As part of the program, each Bridge of Hope client receives support from a group of six to eight trained, churchbased Neighboring Volunteers. “We are considered an essential business, so we have been working through this from the beginning,” noted Kathy Beiler, director of strategic engagement. “More than ever the families in the program really need Neighboring Volunteers. Neighboring Volunteers make the difference by offering encouragement, connections and resources.” See Bridge Of Hope pg 5
Making Masks For Chester County Parkesburg Swap Box Offers By Francine Fulton

Combining the power of social media and the dedication of volunteers who are willing to give their time and talents has resulted in the distribution of more than 3,000 homemade masks by the Chester County Masketeers. Margaret Reif, the Chester County
controller, had the idea to form the group, and the effort kicked off in early April. “I was aware of the need for masks for nonmedical essential employees and reached out to Rep. Carolyn Comitta for her help,” Reif explained. “She brought in people that she knew to start a website and Facebook page.” The group then established drop-off locations where sewers could place homemade masks, as well as donations of fabrics. Most of the sites are at located at area police stations. “We now have 12 locations around Chester County, (including) police departments and some private residences,” Reif said. See Masks pg 7
The Chester County Masketeers have donated more than 3,000 masks to Chester County’s nonmedical essential employees as of early May.

Books, Games And More By Francine Fulton
Since the stay-at-home order has been in effect for several weeks, many people are searching for activities for their families to enjoy. Sparked by this need, the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission has created a swap box so that area residents can share books, puzzles and games with their neighbors. The box is located at the Parkesburg Borough Hall in the gazebo. Commission member Sarah Dougherty explained that the swap box was inspired by people looking to find books to read. “On Facebook there were a lot of people who were commenting See Swap Box pg 3

Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the

destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

YMCA Seeks Food Donations Chester County to expand food collection and distribution efforts to three more of its branches. These new sites are Brandywine YMCA, 295 Hurley Road, Coatesville; Jennersville YMCA, 880 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove; and Oscar Lasko YMCA, 1 E. Chestnut St., West Chester. YGBW invites the public to donate food at these locations, as well as the Kennett Area YMCA, 101 Race St., Kennett Square, on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. People can simply pull up and volunteers will unload the food from the car safely. Shelf-stable items most needed are rice, pasta, peanut butter and cereal, as well as canned fish/chicken, canned fruit and vegetables, cereal, tomato sauce, beans and coffee/tea. As YGBW began expanding its efforts, it put a call out for volunteers. Within 24 hours, more than 100 people volunteered to help. Volunteers are trained in how to weigh, clean and package

COVID-19 Business Task Force Forms Even as Pennsylvania remains under a stay-at-home order by Gov. Tom Wolf, the Chester County commissioners have been meeting virtually with business and economic leaders and health officials to formulate plans to get Chester County back to work when the impact of COVID-19 lessens. Chester County’s approach to the restoration and continued growth of its economy is the creation of a COVID-19 Business Task Force comprised of industry leaders from throughout the county, partnered with businesses
that represent geographical and size diversity. The mission of Chester County’s COVID-19 Business Task Force is three-fold. First, the task force will provide input into business reopening mitigation strategies developed by the commonwealth, ensuring that those strategies are realistic and relevant and will be adhered to by Chester County businesses. The second part of the COVID19 Business Task Force’s mission is to assist in distributing information and updates regarding
Swap Box from pg 1 that the library was closed, and we thought we could do something,” she said. The box currently contains an assortment of books for both children and adults, as well as board games. Other suggestions for items include coloring books, crayons and sidewalk chalk. The box was placed in the gazebo on May 2, and it included books donated by Dougherty and her family members and friends. Since then, many people have added items to the box. “It is really exciting; there were five or six books taken, and someone brought a whole bunch of kids’ books and books for young adults,” said Dougherty. “People have added puzzles and board games. We will be (switching to) a bigger box.” Dougherty pointed out that since people are now cleaning out their closets and basements, they may find games and books that they no longer need. “Instead of letting (these items) sit on a shelf, people may as well share them,” she said. The swap box is located in the courtyard and protected from the weather by the gazebo. “To
get to the gazebo, pull around the Borough Hall to the back parking lot and walk into the entrance as if you were going to the District Court,” Dougherty explained. “There is plenty of parking, and the area is handicapped-accessible.” Those who take items from the box or place items in it should make sure that the lid is secured before leaving. A sign listing rules and suggestions is located near the box. “The rules basically say, ‘Leave a book, take a book,’” said Dougherty. “Don’t take the box and don’t leave any food; donate to the food bank instead.” The Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission was established to offer recreational programs and activities for the Parkesburg community. “ We formed over the summer to provide more opportunities and things to do in Parkesburg,” Dougherty said, adding, “Hopefully, other townships and places might implement their own swap boxes.” For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/ parkesburgparksandrecreation.
reopening and the sector-specific mitigation strategies that will come with reopening. Third, the task force will participate in and guide the development of Chester County’s economic recovery plan. Chester County’s COVID-19 Business Task Force will consist of two groups: a core team and an advisory committee. The core team will comprise organizations that serve the entire county, as well as representatives from each of the county’s chambers of commerce. Core team representatives include Chester County’s Agricultural Development Council, Association of Township Officials, Chamber of Business & Industry, Conference & Visitors’ Bureau, Department of Community Development, Economic Development Council, Planning Commission, and Municipal Managers Consortium as well as
the Chester County Intermediate Unit. The advisory committee will consist of organizations that represent and interact with the many industries in Chester County, and will be of varying sizes from across the whole of the county. Industries and fields that will be represented include agricultural, bio/pharmaceutical, breweries and distilleries, child care, conservation/environment/open space, construction, finance, gig economy workers, hospitals, human services, legal, lodging, long-term care, manufacturing, municipalities, nonprofits, real estate, retail, restaurants and food service, schools and universities, technology, tourism and transportation. Chester County’s COVID-19 Business Task Force core team was scheduled to begin meeting in early May.

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW), a nonprofit organization comprised of eight YMCA branches serving Chester County, has opened its doors to neighbors struggling to put food on the table as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Soon after the statewide stayat-home order was issued, the Kennett Area YMCA and Kennett Area Community Services (KACS) partnered to collect and distribute food to those in need. The Kennett Area YMCA has opened its doors to safely serve as KACS’ food collection and distribution center during the pandemic, as well as helping to staff the site with volunteers. More than 11,000 pounds of food was distributed to 350 families in just the first two weeks of the initiative. As food insecurity continues to grow in Chester County, YGBW has partnered with the Chester County Food Bank, Southern Chester County Opportunity Network (SCCON), Square Root Collective and the United Way of

The deadline relief is provided as a response to the COVID-19 crisis and is not intended to apply to any prior or subsequent tax years. COVID-19 pandemic, the commissioners voted to waive any fees or penalties on taxes paid in their entirety by Friday, July 31. The commissioners’ ability to enact the tax deadline extension is a result of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Act 15 of 2020, signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf on April 20. “Ag Profitability” Webinar Set
R058535
Penn State Extension will offer a free webinar titled “Ag Profitability: Farm Financial Management, Cow-Calf Beef Production” on Tuesday, May 19, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. The webinar is designed to help beef producers better understand the business side of the operation including income statement, production costs, and cash flow. Penn State educators John P. Wodehouse and Cheryl Fairbairn will lead the webinar with both direct and academic experiences. The program aims to empower producers with access to financial and business knowledge to help them make informed production and financial decisions regarding income and expenses. Participants will gain an understanding of the income statement and cashflow as tools. The session will include using vertical analysis to record and evaluate income and expenses and using cash flow projections as decision drivers. Attendees will also learn the key principles and drivers of calculating both the visible and hidden costs of production in cow-calf operations. The webinar will be held via PSU Zoom and is open to the public. To register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/ ag-profitability-series-farm -financial-management-for-beef -cow-calf-producers by May 19. Those who anticipate needing any type of accommodation or who have questions about the physical access provided may contact Wodehouse at 610-6963500 or email jpw20@psu.edu in advance of their participation or visit.

They are helping more and more people,” said Reif.

Organizers have been very pleased with how quickly the group came together and began getting masks to those who needed them. “We are humbled by the generosity of all the individual sewers and groups that have helped us,” said Reif. “People are so generous with their

Once the mask donations started, they were distributed in two phases. “Phase one was to get the masks to nonmedical essential county workers. Since I work for the county, I knew where the need was, so we initially started giving the masks to the sheriff’s deputies, prison guards, the health department, Pocopson Home and different places like that,” noted Reif. “Once the county could procure masks, we were able to start moving into phase two, which was nonprofit organizations that are serving atrisk populations.
