Playground dedicated in Christiana

recently installed new playground equipment at the Lions Community Park, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The playground was made possible through a donation by Lions Club member Steve Shivery in honor of his late mother, Barbara Lou Shivery, who loved to visit the park and watch her children play. Because it was a rainy day, the dedication ceremony on April 30 was moved indoors into the Lions Club building. In attendance at the event were members of the Shivery

“Miss Maureen” named YMCA Volunteer of the Year

“It was a really nice surprise because I love working with the kids,” said Maureen Fox from Atglen Public Library (APL), who was named Volunteer of the Year by the Octorara YMCA & Program Center, where she holds a monthly story time program that promotes

reading among the Y’s toddler and prekindergarten classes.

Fox and volunteers from each of the branches of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine were honored during a “Breakfast of Champions” event held on April 18 at the Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester. Octorara YMCA teacher Allison Thaler nominated Fox on behalf of that YMCA location’s staff. Thaler’s nomination letter stated, “Maureen has a warm smile, a genuine love for our students and the appreciation of our students and staff. Thank you, Miss Maureen, for teaching our students to love books.”

Fox, who is known as “Miss Maureen,” not only reads to the children at the YMCA, but also selects 40 books from the library’s collection and brings them to the location for use by the youngsters. “I go in on the third Wednesday of the month and read stories to the three different classrooms - two pre-K classes and one toddler. I do stories and songs and little finger plays,” Fox said. “When I get there, I switch out the 40 books and take the old ones back to the library and reshelve them.”

family, including Steve’s daughter, Grace, who assisted with the project; Steve’s sisters, Beverly Runk and Angie Wallace; and Barbara’s husband, Paul.

“(Barbara) was ready and willing to help anyone any way she could,” said Steve’s wife, Jewel, during the ceremony. “Her love of Christiana has been carried on in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and it is in her honor that we dedicate this playground today.”

The three siblings then unveiled a sign that will be placed at the playground. It reads, “This playground dedicated in memory of Barbara

Lou Shivery (1937-1989) for the children of Christiana and her own great-grandchildren who play here.”

Lions Club third vice president Ben Scheffel explained that the new playground equipment, which features multiple sliding boards and a climbing wall, was installed by King’s Swings.

“Rubber matting (was added for safety) because they wanted it to last a long time,” Scheffel said. “Steve, who owns Shivery Funeral Home, had some young men that work on his team, and they did a lot of the grounds work, planted grass seed and hauled in dirt (after the installation).”

OWA holds stream cleanup, water study

In keeping with its mission to “restore and protect the natural resources of the scenic Octoraro Creek,” the Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA) recently sponsored two projects - an Earth Day cleanup and a stream study.

Thirty-seven participants took part in the cleanup around the Octoraro Reservoir on April 15, including OWA members, members of Andrews Bridge Foxhounds, volunteers from Allan Myers construction and people from the community. This is the seventh year that the

effort has been held. Three groups in five locations collected 1,500 pounds of trash, which included 400 pounds in Chester County and 1,100 pounds in Lancaster County. Participants met at Jim Neary’s Bait & Tackle in Kirkwood, where they received supplies and directions to the work areas and enjoyed snacks that were provided by Kreider’s Market, Kirkwood. “Picking up trash is not onerous when done with friendly and knowledgeable companions,” said OWA member Rupert Rossetti, event organizer. He noted that eagles and other birds were sighted during the cleanup.

Maureen Fox (right) accepts the award from Loraine DiSciullo, senior director of early childhood development at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.

Fox and her co-workers, including library director Robbyn Kehoe, select the ageappropriate books for the youngsters to enjoy each month. “They stay in the classroom, so they have something fresh to look at,” Fox noted.

Fox’s story time program at the YMCA started in September at the beginning of the school year. “The Y reached out to Robbyn and asked if I could do outreach,” said Fox.

“I used to go to the PLC (Primary Learning Center) at Octorara and read, (so) I was happy to be able to do it (at the YMCA).”

In addition to her work at the YMCA, Fox conducts APL’s Music ‘n’ Movement program on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and a story time with craft program on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. She also runs two programs for adults - Book Club, which meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m., and the Monday Mile Walking Group at 5:15 p.m.

“I started as a volunteer and used to be on the library board, and then I became a part-time employee,” noted

Fox, who is also a volunteer coach with Girls on the Run, which meets at the Octorara YMCA. “I have been doing story time and Music ‘n’ Movement and working at the circulation desk for close to 15 years.”

Fox was part of the team that helped the library move to its newer and larger location at 121 Main St. in 2022.

“(The new library) is a dream come true,” Fox said, adding that she appreciates that the library allows her to conduct a reading program off-site. “I know how fortunate I am to work in a place that supports and believes in community outreach.”

Flashfood and Giant reduce food waste

In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts. Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects

consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million pounds of food from landfills.

As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse

gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.

The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy

products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone and then pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside

their participating Giant or Martin’s store.

Playground frompg 1

All those in attendance agreed that Barbara would have been very pleased with the playground. “She loved the park. She took her kids there. She loved the playground,” said Scheffel.

The rain held off long enough to allow the children to enjoy the new playground after the dedication. “We had a break in the weather. Everything was wet, but they were dying to get on and play,” Scheffel said.

“It’s a wonderful thing in our community when we come together and try to make it better for these generations coming up,” added Jim Groff, the club’s membership chairperson and historian.

Participants will have another opportunity to meet the president, first family and generals on Sunday. A battle re-enactment will take place at noon, followed by a Sunday service at 1:15 p.m.

The encampment will be divided into two parts: the living history encampment on

the upper lawn behind the museum and the military encampment on the lower side of the property. The living history encampment will include presentations from historical fiction author Joel Moore and Civil War historian Bruce Mowday. Moore will cover biographical information on historical figures, display photographs from the war and offer book signings. Mowday’s presentation will

detail the events of the Battle of Gettysburg.

“We are our history. It’s important to learn from the past to understand the present and try to mold our future,” Moore said. “At the encampment, you get to live history and walk through a time-warp to another era, so to speak.”

First White Horse Gallop 5K scheduled

PLACE AN AD IN THE

According to Bob Buzzard of the White Horse Fire Company, the idea for the first White Horse Gallop 5K and Community Day came from volunteer Aaron Stoltzfus. “(Stoltzfus) thought it would be something to bring the community together,” recalled Buzzard of the origins of the event.

The White Horse Gallop will be held on Saturday, May 27, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the fire station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap. Registration on the day of the event will open at 7 a.m.

Organizers have planned a course that will leave the fire company and travel south on Route 897 until reaching Buena Vista Road, where it will turn right. From there, the route will turn right on to School Lane Road and travel back to Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike), where it will turn right and return to the station. Both Route 340 and Route 897 will be closed during the run. Hills are featured on School Lane Road during the second mile of the run.

Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners and to the top three males and females in eight age groups, which will be 13 and under, 14 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and above. Awards will be crafted by local farrier and blacksmith Eli Stoltzfus, who owns Lanchester Farrier Services.

Water for runners who take part in the 5K will be provided by JM Lapp Plumbing.

Breakfast sandwiches will be offered for purchase, as

will pork sandwiches from Honey Brook Barbecue.

The event will be timed by Pretzel City Sports, and those wishing to participate may download a form from www.pretzelcitysports.com.

Registration forms may also be picked up at the fire company and at local businesses. Each participant will receive a swag bag, and T-shirts will be available while supplies last.

Buzzard said that the organization hopes to see 100 runners take part in the fire company’s first 5K. All funds raised will help the fire company to purchase needed supplies.

Sponsorships are available for the event. Individuals who would like to be sponsors or who have questions may email racedirector49@gmail.com or call 717-725-0557.

PREMIUM BARK

The Chester Water Authority provided dumpsters for all the bottles, broken glass, cans, plastics and other debris collected by the volunteers.

OWA also hosted members of the Lancaster Clean Water Partners Watershed Leadership Academy on April 29. The event, which was held on Coopers Run in southern Lancaster County, included a hands-on demonstration of macroinvertebrate sampling, The event was led by Allyson Gibson, Lancaster Clean Water Partners director, and Matt Royer from Penn State University.

OWA members Mary Kay Phillips and Jim Harnish demonstrated how to collect

samples of macroinvertebrates living in the stream by wading in the water and collecting the critters using a seine net.

OWA member Chotty Sprenkle explained that a stream’s quality is determined by the creatures that can be found in the water. “You look at the type of macroinvertebrates that you find,” she said. “(Certain) critters will not live there if the water is not of good quality. They are sensitive to pollution.”

Among the critters found in the water were hellgrammites

(dobsonfly larvae), non-netspinning caddisflies, mayflies, stoneflies, damselflies and scuds, all of which are sensitive to water quality, and blackflies and a leech, which are water quality tolerant.

After the collection, it was determined that Coopers Run was on the high end of the “Fair Stream” category. “It is not a perfect stream. It is supporting life, but it would look better with greater species diversity,” noted Phillips. “If we had found just one water penny or gilled snail, we would have been in

the ‘Good’ category.”

The critters were returned to the water following the study. Members of the Andrews Bridge Foxhounds group provided lunch for participants.

More information about the Leadership Academy is available at www.lancaster cleanwaterpartners.com /lancaster-watershed-leader ship-academy. For more information about the OWA and its activities, visit www.theowa.org or search for “The Octoraro Watershed Association” on Facebook.

Animal hospital to celebrate five years

Pine Creek Animal Hospital, 150 Pine Creek Drive, Gap, will celebrate its fifth anniversary with an open house on Saturday, May 20, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The business is owned by Dr. Ashley Tuma, who knew from an early age that she wanted to be a veterinarian.

Tuma eventually purchased the former Atglen Veterinary Hospital in 2018 and renamed it Pine Creek Animal Hospital. Since that time, the facility has undergone many changes, including renovations in 2020 and 2021. The practice now has five exam rooms, a dental suite separate from the surgery suite, an ultrasound machine, and other in-house laboratory equipment, as well as offices and additional storage spaces. At present, the hospital

Master Gardener webinar slated

Those who enjoy gardening and are passionate about community service are invited to participate in a Penn State Extension webinar about the Master Gardener program and application process. “Master Gardener Training Information Session for Chester County” will occur from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23.

This event is designed for adults in Chester County who are interested in learning about the Master Gardener program application process.

The webinar will cover the purpose and goals of the Master Gardener program, a brief history of Penn State Extension and the Master Gardener program in Pennsylvania, educational activities of the Master Gardeners in Chester County, what is included in the training classes and when they will be offered, application details and deadlines, the acceptance process, and program fees.

The webinar is free and open to the public. Registration by May 23 is required to receive the link to access the webinar. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. To register and for more details, visit https://extension.psu.edu and search for Master Gardener Chester County.

employs an equivalent of four and a half full-time practicing veterinarians, along with 20 full-time and six part-time support team members.

The open house is free to the public, regardless of pet ownership and client status. Individuals will be able to talk with the veterinarians and technicians, take a behindthe-scenes tour of the hospital, enjoy free food, and participate in a silent auction. Kids’ activities, including face painting and stuffie adoptions, will also occur on-site.

Attendees are welcome to bring their pets, and technicians will be available to trim nails for a suggested donation. For the safety and welfare of the staff, dogs and cats must have proof of current rabies vaccination. Funds from the nail trims,

along with any additional freewill offerings, will be donated to Brandie’s Hope, a 501(c)(3) fund used to help offset some of the costs incurred by patients in need of emergency care for their pet. The fund was created by the parents of Brandie Kasper, a technician who passed away suddenly in 2021 from a motor vehicle accident.

For more information, call 610-5936132 or visit www .facebook.com/pine creekanimalhospital.

To make a donation directly to Brandie’s Hope via the Veterinary Care Foundation, visit https://veterinarycare

Car Show

of 18 classes sponsored by local businesses. The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1998. Categories for street rods and street machines are included, along with a couple classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins, and Mustangs. Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and farm

tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 1985 to 2019. Class 17 is open to cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old. Class 18 is for AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) judged cars that have scored a First Junior or Senior award.

First-, second-, and thirdplace awards will be given out in each class. Rather than bring in judges to examine the cars, the event will provide each registered car owner with a ballot to vote on his or her favorites. Entrants are also eligible for door prizes. In addition, representatives of the

Weaverland Valley Fire Company will choose a single car to receive a Best of Show trophy. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Cars receiving first-, second-, and third-place recognition for each class will be paraded to the stage areas to receive cash prizes.

The show is all about cars, but the funds that will be raised by the event will help support the Weaverland Valley Fire Company, which serves the towns of Terre Hill and Goodville.

There is no charge for spectators to attend the show. Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase in the park pavilion. The show will be held rain or shine.

Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-445-4581.
