Octorara Student Creates 50-Year Time Capsule ifty years from now, people will be able to know what life was like in the 2020-21 school year thanks to a time capsule that was created by Scott Davis, a senior at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Items that will be placed in the decorative cherry box, which Scott handcrafted in the school woodshop, include a school facemask that was worn during the pandemic, hand sanitizer and a blank COVID-19 vaccination card. Scott, who is a reporter for the school newspaper, the Octorara Outlook, said that the box will reflect how life was impacted by the pandemic. “I wanted to do one for quite some time, but I felt this was the best time. I thought the school needed one to remember what we were going through,” he stated. “I thought it would be a good senior project and a (project for the) newspaper club. I knew Mrs. (Jennifer) Watson, our adviser, would help guide me.”
F
After coming up with the idea to create a time capsule, Scott was given the go-ahead by the school principal and district superintendent. He then set out to create the box, which is 18 inches wide, 10 inches tall and 12 inches long, and includes a laserengraved brass plaque on top identifying it as the school’s time capsule. “ We started in early February and completed (the box) in April,” he explained. “I used my free periods in the day to work on it, and Mr. (Matthew) Talley guided me along.” In addition to the items already mentioned, other objects in the box include a copy of “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead, which was donated by the publishers; wireless ear buds and a smartphone that are no longer operational; common school supplies; aerial photos of the school and playing fields taken by a drone; recent newspaper and magazine publications; photos; digital documents on flash drives; gift cards; and 2021 proof coins in a sealed case.

To celebrate female-owned businesses and local artisans as well as to raise awareness and support for the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC), an event titled “For Women by Women” was held in Parkesburg on May 16. Activities took place on Main Street in the borough, where the businesses are located. Visitors were invited to shop in the stores and view live outdoor art demonstrations presented by local female artists. Danielle Dougherty, DVCCC director of philanthropic partnerships, was on hand offering small gifts and providing informational brochures about the agency, which provides programs and services for survivors of domestic violence in Chester County.

Former Teacher Named Maple Grove Preschool Director BY FRANCINE FULTON
After more than 10 years of working as a teacher at Maple Grove Preschool in Atglen, Wendy Dougherty has been named the school’s new director. Maple Grove Preschool is a ministry of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, and is housed in the church building. “I oversee the staff and the curriculum, work on marketing and enrollment and (interact) with parents and families directly,” said Dougherty, explaining her new role at the school. “I miss the classroom interaction with the kids, but I think God placed me in this role at this time. I already knew the teachers
and the staff. I knew how things worked and where things are, and it was a smooth transition.” Maple Grove Preschool offers three programs: Little Bears, for toddlers ages 2 and 3; Winkie Bears, for children ages 3 and 4; and Peter Panda, for children ages 4 and 5. “I taught Peter Panda for 13 years,” Dougherty pointed out. The preschool is governed by a board of directors, which includes church members, parents and members of the community. According to www.maplegrovepreschool.com, the mission of Maple Grove Preschool is “to show God’s love to children and families by building a solid fountain for lifelong learning.” See Director pg 6

Octorara Student from pg 1 “I sent Google forms asking the students for donations or ideas or messages they wanted to include,” Scott said. “We will (include students’) predictions and their most
memorable things about school. Hopefully, (50 years from now) we can look back on what they said then and what they thought.” The capsule is set to be sealed on Wednesday, June 16, after graduation, and will not be opened again until June of 2071. “It is meant to be a decorative piece on display, and it will be (kept) in the building,” Scott noted. “There is a decorative lock we morticed onto the box. There will be a key turned halfway so it doesn’t fall out, (but) it will be all closed for 50 years.” Scott will attend Penn State University’s main campus in the fall to study mechanical engineering. He will be 68 years old when the time capsule is reopened.

“The 200 block is all femaleowned businesses,” explained Tina O’Connor, a licensed professional counselor with Experience Positive Therapy. In addition to O’Connor’s business, other female-owned businesses on the block include Sweet Serendipity Cupcakes and Treats, Flowers in Bloom, The Little Shop Next Door and Fountain Springs Wellness Spa. Monetary donations were accepted for the DVCCC, and the businesses collected donations of toiletries, bedding and clothing items for the women and children who are part of DVCCC’s shelter and housing program. Those interested in donating to the DVCCC may visit www.dvcccpa.org/wish-list for more details. There were two baskets given away through a random drawing featuring items donated by the local stores. Parkesburg Lights donated a rare purple Parkesburg Lamp to be included in the giveaway. The preschool day includes creative play designed to develop social and language skills, as well as age-appropriate classes in music, science, art and the Bible. “They have circle time, free choice play and academic centers, where they split into two groups for math and science and (return to one group for) literacy skills,” Dougherty explained. “After that, there is time to go outside and play. We have a special Bible time each day. We want to lead them spiritually as well to know and to love God, which is an important part of our curriculum.” Because of her years of teaching experience, Dougherty has many children pass through the school. “My first class (of students) are seniors this year. The boys are men; it’s amazing,” she stated. “The blessing of working here this long is you really get to know families, especially if they have several kids. You get to know them as people and (think of them as) family, and they become part of your story.” Dougherty said she plans to continue the programs and curriculum that are offered by the preschool and that there are no plans to rename the three classes. “They are 40-year-old names, but they are almost iconic to the area,” she said. “We thought about changing them, but they are part of who we are.” See Director pg 8

★ INVESTOR ALERT ★
Brownie Troop 71308, based in Brownstown and consisting of second- and third-graders, worked on the “A World of Girls” Journey on April 17. The goal of the program is to have fun exploring how stories and games can link participants to the wide world of girls and how participants belong to this wide world of girls, too. The program aims to strengthen girls’ confidence and give them opportunities to better the world. Brownies learned that stories contain clues that can be used to make the world a better place. Scouts discussed fictional stories that take Brownie girl characters to diverse places in the world as well as stories of real-life Brownies exploring their world closer to home. Together, members of Troop 71308 cooked foods from other countries, including mango dip, adobo chicken and crepes. For more information about Girl Scouting, call 800-692-7816 or email memberservices@gshpa.org.

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters
R071069
WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car.
