Middle school students at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) recently donated handmade blankets to Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. The students worked on the blankets for about 45 minutes each week during their clubs. The middle school at WFCS has new clubs every quarter. Students are encouraged to pick a club to participate in and learn something new. The idea of making something to give back to the community began two years ago with middle school teacher Kimberly
Smith. In the past, the club has donated to Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital for Children. WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may visit www.wfcs.org, search for “West Fallowfield Christian School” on Facebook or call 610-593-5011. Pictured on front: Middle

County Assembly 1873 supports various programs at the Coatesville VA Medical Center, including “Wrapping Presence” for veterans in the Contemporary Living Center. As part of this annual effort, the Knights of Columbus group sets up a makeshift store where veterans can shop for gifts for their loved ones at no cost. Gift cards donated at the car show will be used to purchase gifts. The Knights also recently sponsored a luncheon for two dozen women veterans at a local restaurant and held a winter carnival in March in the Great Hall at the VA. At this event, the Knights and other organizations set up booths where veterans could play games and win prizes. Additionally, the Knights are contributing to the new VA Welcome Home Carts program, which provides necessities to veterans who are placed in offsite housing. “With Welcome Home Carts, you get a collapsible shopping cart and it is filled with household items when they leave the center,” Smith explained, noting that the carts contain two See Coatsville VA pg 4

Summer Reading Program on Saturday, June 1, when children may pick up their reading logs at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. The Salisbury Township Branch, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, will also take part in the program. All area residents who call PVPL or the Salisbury Branch their home library are welcome to take part. The theme for this year’s program is “A Universe of Stories.” The Lancaster County Library System chose the theme because it provides an opportunity to highlight the 50th anniversary of the moon landing this summer, and a number of the activities will be focused on NASA. In addition, other topics designed to inspire children to dream, explore, and create will be scheduled. According to Wenger, reading logs are divided into age groups. “ We have different (requirements) for each age group,” she explained, noting that a readaloud log is available for children from birth to 4 years of age. Children ages 5 to 9 may work to complete a junior log. A special tweens log may be used by those ages 10 to 12, and teenagers, those ages 13 to 19, will have a log as well. “Each age group has different activities they need to complete, and when they complete them, they receive tickets

The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has

been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games,

Local Cleanup Efforts Continue Whether intentionally put there or blown from trashcans, dumpsters, shopping carts, or cars, trash can be found in every community. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a program for local residents, organizations, civic groups, and businesses to be part of the solution. Its statewide adoption program is an opportunity for locals to adopt and care for municipal roads, parks, neighborhood blocks, greenways, waterways, and trails. According to Keep America Beautiful’s 2009 National Visible Litter Survey and Litter Cost Study, litter cleanup costs the U.S. more than an estimated $11.5 billion each year, with municipalities spending more than $790 million and counties spending $185 million each year. The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful adoption program helps mitigate the costs associated with cleaning up by encouraging local residents to take ownership of their communities. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the groups or individuals who have adopted the road or area and seeks the support of the local municipalities to provide the sign post, install the sign, and provide trash disposal options as needed. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup of PA will run through Friday, May 31. Free bags, gloves, and vests are available for cleanup volunteers through a partnership with PennDOT and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. For more information about adopting a municipal road, park, neighborhood block, greenway, waterway, or trail, readers may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and click on Keep It or contact Stephanie Larson at slarson@ keeppabeautiful.org or 724-8364121, ext. 104. For information about adopting a statemaintained road, readers may visit the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation at www.penndot.gov and search Adopt-a-Highway.

Through their involvement with the Heroes on the Water event, Jim and Gina Neary were inspired to start their own nonprofit organization, Warriors on the Water Ltd. According to www.warriorsonthe waterltd.com, the mission of the organization is “to build outdoor therapeutic programs that best help serve our military and law enforcement officers and their families.” Through Warriors on the Water Ltd., the Nearys will be hosting events at the Octoraro Reservoir once each month from June through October. For more information, readers may visit the organization’s website or www.facebook.com/Warriorson thewaterltd. Each year, the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of Heroes on the Water holds the event at the Chester Water Authority’s Octoraro Reservoir as well as similar events at other locations. The chapter’s events are open to current and former military members of all ages and all branches of service. “The Heroes on the Water program is excellent,” said Adam Gagne, event coordinator for Central Pennsylvania Chapter of Heroes on the Water. “You just get interaction with so many other service members, whether they’re active duty, retired or have just been discharged.” Information on the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of Heroes on the Water’s events can be found at www.facebook.com/ HOWCENTRALPA.

The Social Security Administration has announced the reinstatement of a disability appeal, the reconsideration, in Pennsylvania. Earlier this year, five other states reinstated the reconsideration. A level of Social Security’s national disability appeals process since 1959, the reconsideration step was eliminated in 10 states as part of a prototype to explore ways to re-engineer the disability process. Reinstating reconsideration restores a national, unified disability process and consistent
due process for disability claimants across the country. It also leads to earlier allowance decisions for some at a lower administrative cost to taxpayers than if the first appeal of an initial claim goes directly to the hearing level to be heard by an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). People still have the right to appeal their reconsideration decisions at a hearing before an ALJ. To learn more about Social Security’s disability process, readers may visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ benefits/disability.

Seat Belt Safety Emphasis Slated
New Nonprofit To Focus On Empowering Girls “I believe most of the problems girls have stem from self-esteem (issues) because they don’t like something about themselves, so they bully someone else. We can change their perception. They need to accept who they are so they can accept others,” stated Angela White when announcing the formation of a new nonprofit organization, Wonderfully Me Inc. The goal of the organization, White said, is to help girls ages 8 to 14 begin “embracing their uniqueness, exploring life’s possibilities and making positive life choices while growing into womanhood.” Wonderfully Me life skills meetings, which are free and open to all girls who reside in Chester County, will begin in the fall at East Ward Elementary School in Downingtown. The first meeting will be on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, and meetings will continue monthly through June 2020. In preparation for the monthly workshops, White is currently seeking volunteers from the community to help with all aspects of the new nonprofit. “We need people interested in volunteering in different capacities - being a mentor, helping me with fundraising, grant writing and marketing. I also need (additional) board members,” White stated. “Volunteer (opportunities) encompass the whole gamut.” White noted that volunteers who will be directly helping with the girls must have mandatory child
She said there will be an emphasis on dealing with bullying. “(Previously) there was bullying and girls being picked on because of their clothing (or appearance), but today because of social media it gets so mean,” White said. “I feel the earlier that we try to reach these girls when these challenges come up, the better they will be able to make the right choices.” For more information about Wonderfully Me, including volunteer opportunities, readers may call 484-713-8254, email wonderfullyme 4ever@gmail.com or visit www. wonderfullyme.info or www.face book.com/wonderfullyme4ever.

abuse background clearance. White said she developed the idea to form the girls’ empowerment group about two years ago. Since that time, she came up with the name of the organization and created a Facebook page and website. She also helped design the organization’s logo, a colorful butterfly with a silhouette of a girl in the center as the butterfly’s body. “I wanted the (logo) to depict a girl’s transformation into a woman (symbolized by) the butterfly,” she said. White also held a meeting on May 28 at the Chester County Library in Exton to help educate the public about the organization and to seek volunteers. White said she does not have daughters, but she learned about girls’ issues through her job, through her role as the aunt to several nieces and through her volunteer work at Coatesville Kids to College and at ChesPenn Health Services’ dental clinic. “I have a lot of nieces and in my profession as a dental hygienist I hear a lot of stories. I thought (forming the organization) would be a good way to empower girls,” she said. “If they feel good about themselves, it will trickle down to other aspects of their lives.” Each meeting at the school will feature various topics. Scheduled topics include “Loving Yourself,” “Successful Goal Planning,” “Exploring Character,” “Social Media Smarts” and “Appreciating Diversity.” “We will talk about a topic and then break into three different age groups where the topic will be explained age-appropriately,” White explained.
