Memorial Day Parade Held In Parkesburg A

Memorial Day parade, sponsored by the Pfc. Robert Montgomery VFW Post 4480, was held in Parkesburg on May 23. The event traditionally takes place the weekend before Memorial Day to allow those with travel plans to participate. The parade formed at A. Duie Pyle on Limestone Road, continued west on First Avenue and ended at the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD), where a brief formal ceremony was held at the Veterans Memorial Garden. The garden, which was dedicated by KVFD in May 2019 as part of the Memorial Day observance in Parkesburg, honors servicemen and servicewomen lost in all military conflicts. After the ceremony, there was a picnic at the Parkesburg VFW Post. Among the participants in the parade were the Chester County Emerald Society Pipe Band, classic and antique cars, emergency vehicles from the KVFD, performers from Russell’s Dance and Baton Studio, the Ladies Auxiliary from the VFW and Parkesburg Boy Scout Troop 135. Local veterans also rode

Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do

outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. The other centers - Caring Hearts, Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow - gives the more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bring-something, buy-something auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit and it will be held on Monday, July 5, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks.

The Borough of Christiana is presenting a Fourth of July porch decorating contest. As part of the firsttime event, residents are asked to decorate their front porches and homes with red, white and blue to celebrate Independence Day. The event, which is open to borough residents only, was the idea of MaryAnne Schneider, borough administrative assistant, who wanted to offer a special activity this year since many contests and events were canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic. “We do Christmas at Christiana, where

everyone goes all out to decorate,” she said. “I hope (people do the same) for this contest and make the town pop.” Local businesses have donated the following prizes: first place, $200 gift card, Stoltzfus Feed and Supply; second place, $100 gift card, Dutch-Way Farm Market; and third place, $25 gift card, Pasquale’s Pizza. There will also be an honorable mention winner, who will receive a gift basket donated by Stoltzfus Feed and Supply. Schneider and new borough manager Bobbi Maser will be in charge of judging, which will take place on Thursday, July 1, from

noon to 4 p.m. “We are going take photos, load them onto the computer, go through them and judge,” said Schneider. “We are looking for patriotic (displays) and something that really (stands out).” Photos of the decorated porches and homes will be posted on the “Christiana Borough” and “Christiana Friends and Neighbors” Facebook pages. “There will be an album to sift through,” Schneider noted. “We have a lot of elderly that can’t get out or walk around and look, so they will be able to enjoy the decorations from home and see what people have done.” See Contest pg 4

cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drive-through food pickup will be available. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. Sarah Fisher, one of five teachers at Sunny Sunbeam, said that the students gather at 9:30 a.m. for devotions each day the center is open. They also spend time singing and sharing news from their individual homes. During recess, they enjoy a yard next to the center. Students also help to mow the lawn or tend the flower beds. In addition to packaging the clothespins, the students make keychains, Lifesaver dolls, baby beads, covered clothes hangers, grape teethers, and other gift items that are sold. During the school year, lessons focus on reading, flashcards, telling time, memory verses, money, and more. Students bring their lunches, or a designated teacher makes lunch. On nice days lunch is eaten outside. Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-7688497, 717-354-2380, or 717-7687417. On the day of the sale, individuals with questions may call 717983-8415.

Virtual Classes from pg 1 as well as safety and basic first aid. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate after the last program. “If they go and babysit, they will have the credentials,” noted Weisner. A fee will be charged for the 4-H Babysitting SPIN Club. There is no charge for current 4-H members. Registration information can be found at https://extension .psu.edu/4-h/babysitting-spin. Other virtual programs being offered this summer include a virtual cooking camp, to be held from Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Youths and their families will learn kitchen skills, food safety and nutrition. Participants will have the opportunity to make one recipe each day. This year’s dishes will include sloppy joes and limehoney fruit salad. Adult supervision is required, and an adult should be working alongside the youth during the entire camp. “(Participants) will receive a list of recipes, ingredients and equipment they need once they register,”

Weisner pointed out. “(The organizers) encourage people to cook along with (the instructors).” She added that those who take the class will also learn more about the Pennsylvania 4-H Cooking Challenge. A complete list of 4-H summer programs and registration information is available at https: //extension.psu.edu/programs /4-h/events/all-events. Weisner noted that all of the virtual programs will be presented via a Zoom webinar, so youths will see only the instructors and not the other participants. Youths must be ages 8 to 18 as of Jan. 1 to take part in the classes. “We’re hoping we will be able to offer in-person (activities) later this summer,” Weisner added.

As part of its effort to ensure every eligible Chester County resident who chooses to have a COVID19 vaccine is able to receive one, the Chester County Health Department has partnered with local emergency medical services (EMS) agencies to schedule at-home vaccine appointments for those who are unable to attend a vaccine clinic. Through the partnership, advanced emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are deployed to administer either the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine to individuals in their home setting. Caregivers for the individuals are also offered the vaccine, if needed. Health officials identified individuals throughout Chester County

“Once they register, they will receive an email with the supplies they might need and the recipes,” explained Extension educator Kelly Weisner. “They will be interacting with the instructors to work on some of the activities.” She said the class was previously offered in 2020. “This one was created last year when we had to go virtual because of the pandemic,” Weisner noted. “There will be different activities from last year. That way it’s not the same information for the kids.” This camp is free to currently enrolled 4-H members; there will be a fee for new 4-H members. Registration will end on Friday, June 11. Each year, members of the Parkesburg Area Business Association (PABA) award a $1,000 scholarship to an Octorara Area School District student planning to study business, as well as $1,000 to a student from the Parkesburg POINT youth center. This year’s winners are Nathan Morales of Gap, a senior at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, who will attend college to study business management and finance, and Rachel George of Parkesburg, a student from The POINT, who has been accepted at Messiah University to pursue a nursing degree. In a typical year, the scholarships would be awarded at a banquet. However, because of the pandemic, the banquets in 2020 and 2021 were both canceled. The last PABA banquet was held in 2019 at Gateway Church. “(For the Octorara scholarship), we go to Karen Letts, the guidance counselor at Octorara (Junior-Senior High School), and she sends us the applications,” explained PABA president Allan Fellman. “We look them over and we have a committee, and we pick a winner that we feel is the most deserving.” The POINT applications are forwarded to PABA by Dwayne Walton, executive director. In 2020, only the POINT scholarship was awarded because Octorara schools were shut down during the application process. Fellman attended an Octorara Area School District School Board meeting to present a certificate and the scholarship to Nathan, who was selected for the honor for displaying the “exemplary trait of dedication and hard work during his time at the Octorara Business Academy.” Fellman and PABA treasurer Gina Rodkey traveled to The POINT to present the certificate and scholarship to Rachel.

PABA works to promote area businesses and the community of Parkesburg. “We have 125 members now, and it’s really growing,” said Fellman. Members host community cleanup days and charity events and offer networking opportunities. PABA also publishes a directory of local businesses, which is available at local stores, including the Parkesburg Walmart. There is also an online directory at www.pabapa.org. The directory, which is free of charge to pick up, contains information about more than 100 businesses. In addition to Parkesburg businesses, other listings in the directory are from Cochranville, Gap and Coatesville. PABA meetings are held at different members’ businesses each month. Past meetings have been held at Rocco and Anna’s Ristorante Italiano in Parkesburg, the Lazy Egg in Compass and the Coatesville

Tax, Rent Rebate Deadline Posted Chester County senior citizens and those with disabilities can apply now through Wednesday, June 30, for the Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for qualifying homeowners can boost rebates to $975. Additional eligibility requirements include an income limit of $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters. Half of Social Security income is excluded. New in 2021, applicants can apply online through the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue’s myPATH system. Filing online leads to fast processing, easy direct deposit options, and automatic calculators that will help individuals apply for their rebate. Readers may visit www.mypath.pa.gov to file an application. Offering an online filing option gives people a new, user-friendly tool that is designed to help ensure everyone who is eligible for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has a simple way to submit their applications. This online option may be especially helpful this year during the COVID-19 pandemic because it will provide applicants with a way to file their applications from the comfort of their homes. In addition, applications are available at www.revenue.state.pa.us or by calling toll-free at 888-222-9190. Free assistance is available through the Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers, and state legislators’ offices. Individuals should call ahead and schedule an appointment, if required. For individuals who have already submitted their application, the status of their rebate can also be tracked using the “Where’s My Rebate?” feature at the aforementioned myPATH website. Readers may contact Sen. Carolyn Comitta’s office at 610-692-2112 or senatorcomitta@pasenate.com with questions, for application assistance, or to request an application via mail.

According to Smuda, those who donate can be sure that their money will be used directly to finance the cost of purchasing additional ventilators. “One hundred percent of their donation is tax deductible, and (if there are) any administration fees that occur, the church will cover those,” he stated. “We will take up funds until things change in India.” Trinity AG and ABC-ELC are located at 1022 Pottstown Pike, West Chester. In lieu of an admission fee, attendees will be asked to make a donation to purchase ventilators for people living in India who have COVID19. The church has partnered with its missionary, who is on the board of Mercy Hospital of Calcutta and is the director of the charity Cry of India, to provide the ventilators. “We will have free food, including burgers and hot dogs, grilled on-site,” noted Megan Potts, ABCELC director. “Everything at the event is free as long as you bring any donation for the Cry of India.” Last year, the carnival was canceled because of the pandemic. Potts expressed regret for the cancellation because it was a milestone year. “2020 was (the preschool’s) 20th anniversary, and this year is the church’s 50th anniversary,” Potts noted. Trinity AG pastor Jimmy Smuda explained that he contacted the missionary after hearing about the pandemic’s effects in India, especially the new coronavirus variants. “We asked him what we could do to help him and support him,” said Smuda. “He sent us a CNN video that we showed to our church (congregation). It’s a lot more dire than I had even realized. Ventilators are at
