Students Showcase Model Dream Homes In Virtual Competition By Francine Fulton

Each year, fifth-graders from throughout the Delaware Valley, including Berks and Chester counties, create three-dimensional homes to compete in Habitat for Humanity of Chester County’s (HfHCC) “Build a House … Build a Dream” contest. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, contest organizers had to make the 17th annual event virtual. Instead of bringing their model homes to Church Farm School in Exton on March 23, participating students were invited to submit a video or photo of their construction projects, along with a 100-word description explaining the inspiration behind their designs. “The event was scheduled for March 23, and the stay-at-home order went into effect on March 16. That Friday, (March 20), we made the decision not to

Fifth-graders throughout the area, including Keira Tolbert, were invited to submit entries to this year’s virtual “Build a House … Build a Dream” contest sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Chester County. For her entry, Keira designed a treehouse.

Moores Memorial Library Offers Curbside Pickup By Francine Fulton

Even though the building is currently closed, patrons are once again able to borrow books from the Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. As part of the library’s gradual reopening at the beginning of the yellow phase, patrons can now order books in advance and then pick them up at the library. Hours for pickup service are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The hours are subject to change without notice. As part of the process, patrons must check the online catalog for the materials they wish to borrow to confirm they are available from the library. To access the catalog, patrons may visit

www.christianalibrary.org and click on the Resources tab. Patrons may order a maximum of five items per person. When the patrons have a list of their desired materials, they may call the library at 610-593-6683 to place their order with a librarian. Those who do not have computer access are asked to call the library. The librarian will ask for the patron’s name, library card number and specific books or topics of books they would like. Then, the librarian will choose from materials available at the library to fill the requests as closely as possible. Patrons will then be given a time, probably the following day, to pick up their materials. They should arrive at the appointed time, park in the library lot and retrieve the books, which will be in a bag labeled with their last name. See Moores pg 7

Boy Scout Troop Stays Connected By Francine Fulton

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, members of Boy Scout Troop 20 in Atglen have remained connected and involved in Scouting by participating in online meetings and instruction and virtual camping experiences.

Troop 20, composed of boys who reside in the Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts, began meeting virtually, via Zoom, when they realized the stay-at-home order of Pennsylvania’s Gov. Tom Wolf would last more than the initial two weeks. First, the troop held its elections for senior patrol leader through email. Then, under the direction of new leader and Scoutmaster Cory Peters, the Scouts began meeting online. They were invited to participate via email, which included the Zoom link and password. “This is the first time they ever had to meet virtually because there was no other option,” explained Christine See Boy Scout Troop pg 2

We knew all the participants had been working on their entries, and we reached out to them letting them know we would figure something out. We had to come up with a Plan B.” This year, 28 students submitted their dream home designs for the virtual contest, which took place on May 2. To view the entries, readers may visit www.YouTube.com and search for “Virtual Build a House Build a Dream Event.” A highlight of this year’s submissions included “green” designs with features such as rooftop gardens and areas for composting and recycling. participated in virtual campouts offered by both the Chester County Council and the National Boy Scouts of America (BSA) organization via Facebook Live. During the sessions, Scouts learned about camping skills such as knot tying and how to build a campfire. “They had an online video where they brought in different Scout leaders to talk about some of their experiences,” Noah said. Noah and Jonah also camped out at home. “We set up a tent in our living room and ate and slept there. We treated it like a (real) campout,” Noah said. “ We earned a patch for the virtual campout, and (the living room campout) counted as a night in a tent. You need a certain amount of nights in a tent to earn a camping merit badge.” The Scouts plan to continue meeting virtually on Mondays at 7 p.m. as they normally would meet in person at the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen. The online meetings will continue until the stay-at-home order is lifted and groups larger than 25 are permitted to gather. “I want to meet in person again, but I do like the online meetings,” Jonah said. The troop is also looking forward to welcoming new Scouts. “The quarantine hit just as we were preparing to welcome new boys into the troop from two local Cub Scout packs - Parkesburg Pack 135 and Atglen Pack 20,” Christine added. “Half of the new Scouts have not yet had an in-person experience in troop meeting.”

Zink, a member of the troop’s parent committee. “The committee members communicate by email and text, but this was all new for (the Scouts).” Youth leaders in the troop, along with guidance from the adult leaders, brainstormed ways to make the meetings fun and interactive, all while continuing to work on rank requirements and merit badges. The kickoff online meeting for the troop was a scavenger hunt where participants were asked to gather a long list of items from around their homes. “We had to look for a pizza cutter, a hammer, our Scout books, a crazy hat of some sort, a sports jersey or merchandise for a sports team,” explained Scout Noah Zink, a student at Pequea Valley High School. “You had to get creative with some of the items you looked for.” “The kids had fun, and they were so happy to get back together again,” Christine added. “It had been a few weeks since they saw each other.” “One thing I like is how easy it is to attend (Zoom meetings),” added Scout Tyler Mowrey, who attends Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Since the early days of the online meetings, the Scouts have taken part in online bingo, merit badge sessions, lessons for rank requirements and more. “One of my favorite parts was during our meetings, we would do online games like Kahoot!” said Scout Jonah Zink, a student at Pequea Valley Intermediate School. “It’s a quiz game where a teacher or Scoutmaster makes a quiz about a topic he taught about that night. If you get the question right, you get points. At the end, the winner gets bragging rights.” “I like the games because they’re different,” noted Scout Finley Reynolds, a student at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Some Scouts have even

gratulating the students on their accomplishments,” Patterson noted. In a typical year, students are present along with their projects while judges, who are local architects, engineers and HfHCC volunteers, view the houses and ask questions. Prizes are then awarded. “The judges base their decision on how articulate the students are while talking, the overall design, how much effort went into the home and what their

inspiration looks like,” Patterson said, There is no cost for students to participate, but the event is a fundraiser for HfHCC. Local businesses sponsor the design competition, including presenting sponsor Fox & Roach/Trident Charities, and they are listed in the event program. This year, the students’ work was recognized on the video, but no prizes were awarded. “Typically, we have three winners, but we did not want to limit anyone based on technology. Some submitted photos and some videos,” said Patterson. “(Instead), we celebrated the creativity and all the hard work people put in. “ She added that HfHCC was also able give away prizes to student participants, who each received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. Prizes included passes to Palace Bowling & Entertainment Center and Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park. The passes will be valid once the locations reopen. Five grand prizes were also presented through a random drawing, in which participants were invited to purchase tickets. Prizes included day passes to Disney World, tickets to theme parks and additional family fun packages. “The drawing raised $890, and the event itself raised more than $17,000 to go directly to building affordable housing in Chester County,” Patterson noted, adding that HfHCC projects are currently underway in West Grove and Coatesville. “Restore Chester County Online Toolkit Available The Chester County commissioners recently launched www.RestoreChesterCounty.org, a comprehensive online toolkit that offers guidelines specifically designed for Chester County’s more than 15,000 businesses and 525,000 residents who moved from the red phase to the yellow phase on June 5. Visitors to the new website will immediately be presented with access to a Business & Org Toolkit as well as a Resident Toolkit. The Business & Org toolkit lists guidelines that span industries, including a checklist for knowing if one’s business is ready, how to get it ready and how to find

resources for obtaining personal protective equipment. Business and organizational leaders can also access information for 20 different business and organization sectors, including agriculture, office settings, restaurants, personal care, schools, and religious organizations. All information found on www.RestoreChesterCounty.org is drawn from federal, state and county guidelines. Feedback from Chester County’s nine chambers of commerce and businesses was compared with Pennsylvania mitigation recommendations to make sure the toolkit includes coronavirus prevention strategies

that are realistic and therefore will be followed by county businesses. The guidelines are designed to supplement, not replace, requirements from any level of government, safety laws, or rules and regulations applicable to a particular industry segment. Restore Chester County is an initiative launched by the county’s COVID-19 Business Task Force, a collaborative of business, economic, education and government leaders formed by the Chester County commissioners in April to focus on reopening and restoring Chester County’s economy in the wake of COVID-19.

Chester County businesses have been sharing their innovative ways to safely offer services by emailing the task force at business@chesco.org, and many of those strategies are shared throughout www.Restore ChesterCounty.org in vignettes that feature the business owners and their stories. The stories will be shared in the social media campaign #RestoreChesCo throughout the summer. Chester County businesses and residents are encouraged to share their reopening experiences, tips and insights using the hashtag #Restore ChesCo.

Emergency Services to guide them, county senior staff members have invested in equipment and developed procedures to start the yellow phase with necessary precautions. New procedures include screening everyone who enters a county building, wearing masks and practicing social distancing, as well as maintaining hygiene and

cleaning procedures. Additional mitigation strategies are currently being reviewed and refined by county departments, including appointmentonly access by the public, secure drop boxes and transitioning to virtual interactions. Details of the limited in-person and online programs and services for Chester County residents are

available at www.chesco.org. More specific information on individual department services available during the yellow phase will be posted on department-specific web pages on the aforementioned website. Residents needing to interact in person with county departments are encouraged to call ahead or visit the website to obtain details, including

Twelve weeks after moving to essential services-only, Chester County Government and courts reopened the doors again of county facilities on Market Street and Westtown Road, as well as the Magisterial District Courts throughout the county. However, officials note they are proceeding with caution and have set restrictions to ensure the safety of staff members and the public as the county continues to try to control the impact of the coronavirus. The reopenings are a result of of the county’s move to the yellow phase. All Chester County courts and court-related staff returned to work on June 2 as court functions of the Court of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Courts are being restored. Jury trials are currently planned to resume in August. All Chester County government staff members who are unable to work from home to provide county programs and services returned to work on June 5. The bags will be placed on a table near the bike rack at the bottom of the entrance stairs. No one will be permitted to enter the library or meet in person. No audiobooks or magazines can be checked out during the yellow phase. Materials must be in the library at the time of order. No holds or interlibrary loans will be allowed. Also, patrons should not leave a message on the library’s answering machine. Only materials ordered by direct conversation with a staff member will be processed. “In our library, there will be two people per shift,” ex plained library director Trish Vandenbosch. “Someone will answer the phone to get people’s requests. If people have access to a computer, it will make it really easy.” For those who do not have a computer, it will be helpful if they know an author or type of book they are interested in borrowing. “Hopefully, people will give us titles and we can give them the exact book, but they (may request) a Danielle Steele book or a book about baseball,” noted Vandenbosch. She explained that the new rules were published by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. “They wanted to open during Phase 1 of yellow with pickup (only),” Vandenbosch said, noting that the service began on June 8. “They call it a framework of opening libraries. In the third phase of yellow, we should be able to open with a very limited number of patrons and with social distancing. (The pickup service is) the forerunner for us to be open.” She said that staff members have been visiting the library during the weeks since it closed in March. “Our library was one of the few of the Lancaster libraries that actually took books back in our deposit,” she said, noting that no fines have accrued during the shutdown. “ We were in cleaning books and shelving them.” Audiobooks and e-books have been available to patrons during the stay-at-home order through https://lancaster libraries.overdrive.com and http://online.lancaster libraries.org. The library also offers Storytime with Mrs. Amanda on its Facebook page at 11 a.m. on Fridays. To view the story time programs, readers may search for “Moores Memorial Library” on Facebook and choose Videos. Vandenbosch is excited for the day when the library building will be open. “I can’t wait,” she said. “I miss the patrons so much. I miss the kids playing. I’m happy we are open in some form, and I appreciate the patrons’ patience. It’s all new to us.”

Gority Named CBF Director The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has named Shannon Gority as executive director of its Pennsylvania office. Gority brings years of experience to her new role. She was most recently a consultant to both government and private industry. She was also the first CEO of Capital Region Water, the water utility born from the former city-controlled Harrisburg Authority where she served as engineering director. Local Resident Publishes Children’s Book

Christina Groff-Yoder recently published a children’s book, “Munchie the Menace.”

Christina Groff-Yoder, a resident of Quarryville, recently published a children’s book, “Munchie the Menace,” based on a true story about a pet goat. “(Munchie) likes to chew on everything, which gets her into trouble, but she is loved anyway,” said Groff-Yoder, explaining the plot of the book. “I hope that children who read it will learn about love, forgiveness and problem solving. It is based on a true story because as a child we had a pet goat and my husband and I also raised goats for a few years. I’ve always enjoyed animals, too.” Groff-Yoder, who has worked with children for 30 years, has been the head teacher of the toddlers room in a day care and has been a nanny for local children, including a child with special needs.

White Horse/Gap Area

She has also been active in the community as a volunteer at the Quarryville Library, Christ’s Home and The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center. “I will be volunteering at Solid Rock (Youth Ministries) when they open back up,” she noted. “I currently work at Pequea Valley’s Paradise Elementary School as a paraeducator for a student with special needs. I love children and have

always wanted to publish a children’s book since I was a child. I finally made that happen in April of this year.” She said she plans to have the book made into an audiobook so it can be listened to by children who are visually impaired.
