Local Student Wins Atglen T-Shirt Design Contest BY FRANCINE FULTON
As part of a contest presented by Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich, Riley Cooper, 13, was selected as having the winning design for the first Atglen T-shirt.
Volunteers Susan Phillips (left) and Jody Bush showcase the newly expanded Righteous Clothing Thrift Store.
Righteous Clothing Thrift Store Doubles In Size hoppers who visit the Righteous Clothing Thrift Store in Parkesburg now have even more room to shop and additional merchandise to choose from since the store has doubled in size. The all-volunteer-run shop, which is a ministry of Parkesburg United Methodist Church, has remained at the same location, 317 Main St., Parkesburg. However,

a vacant store and a former donation take-in area were combined to form the new retail store. The former store space is now being used for storage. A portion of a wall was taken down to join the two areas and create the larger space. “ We were closed for a week,” explained volunteer Jody Bush, chairperson. “There was paint on the floor and we scraped it all by hand and we buffed it.”
In addition, volunteers created new displays. For example, the glass was removed from a hutch and sale items were placed inside. A former work bench was painted and is now used to display items for sale. A shutter was repurposed to house magazines. The larger store also allows for additional window displays. “People walk by and window shop. We keep high-end stuff in the front window,” Bush noted. Along with the expansion, the shop is now accepting credit card payments for the first time, in addition to cash. The Righteous Clothing Thrift Store offers candles; art; antiques and vintage collectibles; bags and purses; books, CDs, DVDs and records; crafts and sewing supplies; fabric; hardware and tools; luggage; office and school supplies; and clothing for men, women and children. Items in the thrift store, which are donated by the congregation and community members, are new or gently used.
The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will celebrate its 85th anniversary by holding an art show featuring 5-by-7-inch original paintings donated for sale by its members. The show, themed “Lancaster County Color,” opened on June 12 and will be on exhibit through July 7 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

The T-shirt depicts two hands with a growing plant and the words “Atglen Borough: Where Community Grows. 2022.” Riley said that she developed the T-shirt design using an art app on her iPad with an Apple Pencil. “I thought of how our community grows together and how plants grow,” she said of the design. “I’ve always felt at home in Atglen. Everyone is so kind and everyone cares about each other. All of my neighbors always help each other.” Riley said she heard about the contest after her dad showed her the mayor’s post on Facebook, which also featured a graphic created by Robert Walker, a Career and Technical Education (TCE) graphic arts student of Rachel Minnich at Octorara Junior-Senior High School.

Mayor Darren Hodorovich (right) presented Riley Cooper with a gift card during the April borough council meeting.
“As many of you know, I’m a big fan of all things Atglen - pretty much think we live in one of the best places possible. To that end and to start a new annual tradition we are looking to release a little Atglen swag,” Hodorovich’s post stated. “I’m looking for a resident to help design what you think represents the borough of Atglen, of which will be printed on our very first Atglen 2022 T-shirt. There is no age restriction, and I would encourage young artists to jump in as well.”

Three designs were submitted, and borough council members chose Riley’s design as the winner. Hodorovich presented her with a $50 Wawa gift card at the April meeting of the Atglen Borough Council. Riley is a seventh-grade student at Octorara Junior-Senior High School and recently joined the Atglen Sportsman’s Club Scholastic 3-D Archery team. “Art is definitely a hobby of mine,” she shared. “I enjoy drawing landscapes and characters. I use art apps on my iPad as well as colored pencils in sketchbooks.” The Atglen T-shirts, available in youth and adult sizes, were printed by Octorara Junior-Senior High School technology education teacher Pat Lauletta. T-shirts are available at the Atglen Borough Office, 120 Main St., Atglen. Only cash or checks will be accepted for purchase. “I was so excited that my design was chosen, and I can’t wait to see everyone wearing them around town,” Riley added. For more information about the contest and other events and activities in Atglen, search for “Mayor of Atglen Borough, Darren Hodorovich” on Facebook.

Righteous Clothing from pg 1 Bush said she continues to be surprised at the high quality of donations. “A lady came in yesterday with a pocketbook - a brandnew Coach bag. It has never been used,” noted Bush. “There is a globe with inlaid stone (valued) at $200. We also have a Lladró figurine.” Proceeds from the store, which opened in 2009, are given to the church and local charities. In 2021, the store supported the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, the Parkesburg POINT Youth Center, Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO), Kacie’s Cause, Locust Lane Riding Center and Keystone Ambulance. The store is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m., on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The store is also open during Final Fridays in Parkesburg, held on the last Friday of each month, beginning at 5 p.m. Volunteers are always needed to help sort and price items and to run the cash register. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and they do not have to be members of the church. “We need more volunteers,” said Bush. “People have been asking us to be open for at least one evening (per week). So, we are going to try to be open on Thursdays from 1 to 6 p.m. (as soon as we have additional volunteers).” For more information about the thrift store, visit www.facebook .com/righteousclothingthriftstore or https://righteousclothingthrift store.godaddysites.com.
