Christiana Dedicates Hometown Heroes Banners BY FRANCINE FULTON

The PICO Ironmen, a professional baseball team, once played in Parkesburg.

Chad Naggy has established a mini museum at PICO Field, which was once the home of the professional baseball team the PICO Ironmen.

Those who drive through the Borough of Christiana may notice some newly placed Hometown Heroes banners, which honor local servicemen and women who are currently in the military, as well as living and deceased veterans. The banners were dedicated on May 30 by the Christiana Lions Club, which spearheaded the effort

arkesburg, which once had its own professional baseball team called the PICO Ironmen, will celebrate its baseball history with a five-day Baseball Festival at Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg, from Saturday, June 26, through Wednesday, June 30. The event, to be presented by the South Eastern Pennsylvania Travel Baseball Association (SEPTBA), will include baseball games featuring the Elkton Eclipse and the Keystone Baseball Club of Harrisburg, which will play 1860s-style baseball; a classic car show with prizes; a wiffle ball tournament; wood bat games; and food.

Efforts are being made to restore PICO Field, which was once the home field for the PICO Ironmen.

June 28 and June 29, as well. A wiffle ball tournament will begin on June 27, with semifinals on June 28 and the championship on June 29. June 30 will be an attempt at the largest game of catch at 7 p.m. A complete schedule of events can be found at www.septba.com/baseball-festival. The event is being planned by Chad Naggy, SEPTBA president and commissioner, who founded the organization in 2016 as an avenue for young ballplayers to compete. SEPTBA’s motto is “Gentlemen First, Ball Players Second.” Helping with the festival is borough council member Josh Mellinger, along with Cathy Wilde Christ, whose father, the late Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde, owned a photograph collection from the original PICO team. “Kathy and Josh came up to idea to have a car show. We started building events around the weekend and it began to grow into a festival,” Naggy said. “It’s all to raise money for the baseball (fields). There are two fields at Minch Park upper and lower. The upper field is where the Ironmen played. I’m trying to make the upper field the way it was in 1916.”

David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit charity created to help veterans, was the recipient of the 2021 American Spirit Award presented by the Veterans Health Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Jennifer Lilly, chief of voluntary service for the Coatesville VA Medical Center, nominated DD831 for the work it does to improve the lives of veterans, including those who reside at the center and others who live in the community. There were 70 nominees total nationwide.

Attendees will also learn about the history of the Ironmen team, which was created by Horace Beale Jr., president of the Parkesburg Iron Company (PICO). His team played at PICO Field, known today as Minch Park, where it faced players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Casey Stengel. All proceeds from the festival will benefit the restoration of the original PICO field. to have the banners created and installed throughout the borough. On the same day, the Lions met at Chantry Place to hold a dedication ceremony for three collages that depict all of the current banners. “The collages are replicas of all 63 banners that hang around town,” explained Lions Club member Steve Shivery. “People can go to borough hall and see all of them and get a map that gives directions where each one of them hangs.” Along with the collages, visitors to borough hall, 10 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, can view a poster that features casual shots of the servicemen and women that were submitted by their families but not included on the banners. “They had an option to send us candid shots. There is a one of a man standing in front of a cannon and one looking out of a bunker,” Shivery noted.

Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. The other centers - Caring Hearts, Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow - gives the more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bringsomething, buy-something auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit and it will be held on Monday, July 5, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Items that will be sold at the auction include flowers and plants, toys, barbecue apparatus, carriages, swing sets, sheds, and quilts made at Caring Hearts, which will be sold at 4 p.m. A garage, which will be built on location for the winner, will also go up for bids. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drive-through food pickup will be available. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. Sarah Fisher, one of five teachers at Sunny Sunbeam, said that the students gather at 9:30 a.m. for devotions each day the center is open. They also spend time singing and sharing news from their individual homes. During recess, they enjoy a yard next to the center. Students also help to mow the lawn or tend the flower beds. In addition to packaging the clothespins, the students make keychains, Lifesaver dolls, baby beads, covered clothes hangers, grape

meal. Participants should bring enough food for themselves and four more people. Paper products, utensils and beverages will be provided. Attendees should use their own serving spoons. For more information, visit www.salisburytwphistory.org.

A Memorial Day parade, sponsored by the Pfc. Robert Montgomery VFW Post 4480, was held in Parkesburg on May 23. The event traditionally takes place the weekend before Memorial Day to allow those with travel plans to participate. The parade formed at A. Duie Pyle on Limestone Road, continued west on First Avenue and ended at the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD), where a brief formal ceremony was held at the Veterans Memorial Garden. The garden, which was dedicated by KVFD in May 2019 as part of the Memorial Day observance in Parkesburg, honors servicemen and servicewomen lost in all military conflicts. After the ceremony, there was a picnic at the Parkesburg VFW Post. Among the participants in the parade were the Chester County Emerald Society Pipe Band, members of the Octorara Junior-Senior High marching band, classic and antique cars, emergency vehicles from the KVFD, performers from Russell’s Dance and

Make It With Wool Contest Announced

For a little town, to have 63 (banners) is wonderful.” Shivery noted that more than 100 people attended the dedication ceremony, which was moved indoors because of rainy weather. He added that the effort to install the banners has been supported by borough council and the community. “(The Lions) do a lot of volunteerism - that’s what

it’s all about,” he stated. “As an organization, we need to stand up and do things and people rally around us.” The Lions Club is currently taking names for additional banners. For more information, email christiana.lions z@gmail.com or send a message through the club’s Facebook page, www.facebook .com/ChristianaLionsClub.

Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. The winner in the Junior division, for youths ages 13 to 16, and the winner in the Senior division, for those ages 17 to 24, will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest to be held in San Diego in January 2022. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric/yarn used. To request the registration form and other information, contact Linda Siegel at 717-2741197 or linda@lebaweb.com. All who register will receive a piece of Pendleton wool. To learn more, visit www.makeitwithwool.com.

This summer, Penn State Extension’s 4-H program is offering virtual classes for youths ages 8 to 18, including classes on babysitting and cooking. A virtual 4-H Babysitting Special Interest (SPIN) Club will be held daily from Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The club is designed to help prepare youths age 11 and older for babysitting. Topics will include learning characteristics and needs of infants, toddlers and preschoolers, as well as safety and basic first aid. Each par-

ticipant will receive a babysitting certificate after the last program. “If they go and babysit, they will have the credentials,” noted Extension educator Kelly Weisner. A fee will be charged for the 4-H Babysitting SPIN Club. There is no charge for current 4-H members. Registration information can be found at https://extension.psu.edu /4-h/babysitting-spin. Other virtual programs being offered this summer include a virtual cooking camp, to be held from Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Youths and their families will learn

kitchen skills, food safety and nutrition. Participants will have the opportunity to make one recipe each day. This year’s dishes will include sloppy joes and lime-honey fruit salad. Adult supervision is required, and an adult should be working alongside the youth during the entire camp. “(Participants) will receive a list of recipes, ingredients and equipment they need once they register,” explained Weisner. “(The organizers) encourage people to cook along with (the instructors).” She added that those who take the

class will also learn more about the Pennsylvania 4-H Cooking Challenge. A complete list of 4-H summer programs and registration information is available at https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h/events/ all-events. Weisner noted that all of the virtual programs will be presented via a Zoom webinar, so youths will see only the instructors and not the other participants. Youths must be ages 8 to 18 as of Jan. 1 to take part in the classes. “We’re hoping we will be able to offer in-person (activities) later this summer,” Weisner added.

The Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2. The contest will be held in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The contest is open to anyone who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging is based on several criteria, including appropriateness to contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and the garment’s conveying and promoting the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. Contestants will be divided into age categories. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool. The first banners were unveiled by the club in 2017. The banners, which measure 24 inches by 48 inches, include a picture of the service member and his or her name, branch and era of service. The sponsor’s name appears at the bottom. Represented on the banners are members of the United States armed forces from World War I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Local residents were invited to submit photos and names for the most recent effort, beginning in February with a deadline of April to allow time for the club members to put the banners in place before Memorial Day weekend. “We advertised it through social medial (that) you could buy a banner,” said Shivery. “The original ones have been up for three years, so we decided to take names for the second phase. We were able to hit a lot of streets where we did not have banners (before).

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) unveiled its new indoor pickleball courts at the West Chester Area YMCA, 605 Airport Road, West Chester, on April 26 at noon during its First Serve Pickleball Court Opening Ceremony. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and pingpong. It can be played by people of all ages and abilities. At the ceremony, Denise Day, president and CEO of YGBW, and Laura SchofieldPierson, executive director of the West Chester Area YMCA, both offered remarks,

followed by a countdown to the first official serve. YGBW members then took to the courts to play with staff providing demonstrations on how to play pickleball. These are the first of many new pickleball courts both indoor and outdoor that YGBW is installing in seven of its Chester County branches. Over the next few months, official outdoor pickleball courts will be installed at the Jennersville YMCA, Kennett Area YMCA and Upper Main Line YMCA, while the outdoor courts at the Brandywine YMCA will be renovated. See YGBW pg 10

The new indoor pickleball courts at the West Chester Area YMCA were unveiled during a ceremony on April 26.

Last year, the carnival was canceled because of the pandemic. Potts expressed regret for the cancellation because it was a milestone year. “2020 was (the preschool’s) 20th anniversary, and this year is the church’s 50th anniversary,” Potts noted. Trinity AG pastor Jimmy Smuda explained that he contacted the missionary after hearing about the pandemic’s effects in India, especially the new coronavirus variants. “We asked him what we could do to help him and support him,” said Smuda. “He sent us a CNN video that we showed to our church (congregation). It’s a lot more dire than I had even realized. Ventilators are at a premium right now.” To date, the church has donated $12,500, the cost to purchase one ventilator. “Because he serves on the board at the hospital, he has firsthand ability to make the purchases there,” Smuda explained. “Even if we purchase them and send them over, there is so much red tape.” To view the video and to donate, visit www.trinityag .org/giving/cry-of-india. According to Smuda, those who donate can be sure that their money will be used directly to finance the cost of purchasing additional ventilators.

Car Seat Inspections Available The Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) will offer free inspections of children’s car seats to keep children safe as they travel. The inspections will be available by appointment at the parking garage across from the Chester County Justice Center, Market Street, West Chester. Sgt. Matthew Tocydlowski and Deputy Suzanne Campos, certified technicians, will conduct the inspections. The half-hour multi-step inspection includes taking basic information about the car seat, vehicle, and age and weight of the child to determine their compatibility for safety. The owner’s safety seat will be inspected for visible damage and proper installation. The review will also cover demonstrating installation, observing the adult’s installation, and discussion of how the seat works, correct seat position in the vehicle, proper harness installation, and additional information. Car seat inspections are not just for first-time parents. Anyone who will transport a child in a car, including grandparents, other family members, babysitters, or child care providers, is welcome to schedule an appointment. To make an appointment, contact scampos@chesco.org or 610-344-6139.

Michelle Smith, YGBW’s pickleball coordinator, noted that the organization is expanding its pickleball offerings with lessons, classes, leagues, clinics and more. CLASSIFIEDS

Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation program as a 2020 Tree Campus Healthcare facility. Coatesville VAMC said that taking care of green spaces is a priority for the campus because not only do trees contribute to the environment, but they can also promote physical activity and create calming spaces that are essential to stress recovery. Both outcomes are important to the health and rehabilitation efforts for veterans in longterm care, the VAMC said. The announcement means Coatesville VAMC was recognized for the second year in a row for making a missionaligned impact on community wellness through tree education, investment, and community engagement. Dedicating resources to fulfill the facility’s Tree Care Plan meant over 2,100 trees, shrubs, and perennials were planted around the campus. Trees accounted for 154 of the inventory planted; additionally,

75 trees were pruned and fertilized and 45 more were removed. A team of 10 dedicated grounds crew members tends the 140-acre property throughout the year by pruning, planting, mowing, and raking the greenspaces. Composting the grass and leaves while they work to beautify the campus is a standard practice. While COVID-19 restrictions limited community projects, a few staff members teamed up to protect the facility’s tree inventory from the invasive spotted lanternfly by banding at-risk trees with sticky material. Visit w w w. t r e e c a m p u s healthcare.org for more information on the Tree Campus Healthcare program.
