Church sets spaghetti dinner fundraiser
BY FRANCINE FULTONAs a fundraiser to repair and preserve the church’s stained-glass windows, Parkesburg United Methodist Church, 411 Main St., Parkesburg, will have a spaghetti dinner on Friday, June 21. There will be seatings at 5 and 7 p.m., and diners may take out their meals or eat on-site.
The menu will include spaghetti with meatballs, salad, rolls with butter and beverages. The meal will be homemade by church members, and the dinner will be available in the church’s downstairs fellowship hall.
According to Karen Holmes, a
member of the church’s United Methodist in Action (UMIA) committee, the church has 15 large stained-glass windows that depict Jesus’ life and resurrection. Most windows were given in honor of, or in memory of, church members.
The windows were installed in 1870 when the church was built, and some were added when the stone edifice was constructed in 1921. “The colors are still very bright,” Holmes said. “Our stainedglass windows are very beautiful.”
She noted that many couples have requested to have their weddings in the church because of the window’s designs and their visual messages.
In addition, in the past, pastor Mark Beideman has held a sermon series titled “The Stories in the Stained-Glass Windows,” based on the images featured in the windows. For example, the windows depict Jesus’ birth in the manger, Jesus as a young man and Jesus as a shepherd holding a sheep.
Approximately 30 years ago, all of the stained glass windows were covered with acrylic glass on the outside to protect them. Over the years, the outdoor wooden window sills have been painted and repaired many times.
Now, the church plans to wrap the outside window sills in aluminum, which will seal
4-H to offer summer camps for youths
BY FRANCINE FULTONThis summer, Chester County 4-H, a program of Penn State Extension, will offer fun and educational activities for youths through its day camp program. Topics will include computer coding, exploring nature, rocketry and candy making. 4-H will also offer a babysitter training class.
A highlight of each of the classes is that all involve hands-on activities. “The candy making is generally the most popular camp, but the STEM camps are also getting popular,” said Toni Stuetz, 4-H Extension educator. “(The camps) are all hands-on. ... They are definitely all learning by doing.”
Youths in the Candy Making Day Camp will learn to make a variety of sweet treats.
Introduction to Circuits Day Camp will be offered on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children will learn basic engineering, electronics and circuitry concepts by using building components to create circuits. Snap Circuits, Makey Makey and Arduino technology will be used.
3D Printing with Tinkercad Day Camp will be held on Sunday,

VITA sets record-breaking year
Three volunteer tax preparers at the Coatesville teller windows help taxpayers.
The Life Transforming Ministries Chester County Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program wrapped up another tax season of providing support to the community. It was a record-breaking year for the program, with VITA volunteers preparing and filing more than 2,400 tax returns, resulting in an economic impact of more than $3.7 million in refunds and credits for local taxpayers. Throughout the season, VITA volunteers offered free tax preparation services to individuals and families, including senior
citizens, persons with disabilities, and those with limited English proficiency. The program’s goal is to ensure that taxpayers receive every dollar they are entitled to, helping to alleviate financial stress and promote economic stability. More than 100 volunteers contributed countless hours to make tax season run smoothly. Their efforts were aimed at ensuring that taxpayers were informed, comfortable, and confident in the accuracy of their returns.

known in Lancaster County history for helping the slaves,” explained Sadsbury Friends Meeting member Connie Webster.
Ricketts is buried at Darby Friends Meeting in Delaware County. Finigan is a member of Darby Meeting and as such has done research on the individuals in its burial ground.
Sadsbury Friends Meeting opened its 300th anniversary year with a wedding re-enactment of Joseph Miller and Jane Kirk, the first couple to be married at Sadsbury Monthly Meeting in 1738.
In March, Finigan was the guest speaker, offering a talk about the Lenapi and Minquas Trail.
Other anniversary events included a Peace Tea held
in April.
Following the June talk, “Quakers in Two Centuries, Part 2” will be presented on Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Brenda Walker Beadenkopf will present a program about her father, Charles Walker, and his civil rights work, particularly with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charles Walker was born in the Gap area.
“(Beadenkopf) will do Part I on Thursday evening (July 25) at the Christiana Historical Society, and our talk will be on Saturday afternoon,” Webster noted.
Webster added that the Sadsbury Friends Meeting will also participate in Christiana Heritage Days in September, which
marks the anniversary of Christiana Resistance.
“We will also have our ‘talking tombstone’ event that we will repeat in the fall,” she said. “It is in conjunction with the Christiana Historical Society, and it will highlight the graves of those who were active in the Christiana Resistance plus the Underground Railroad. We will get dressed up for that in Quaker clothing that we borrow from Downingtown Meeting.”

Giant announces Healing the Planet grant program
The Giant Company in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful recently announced the return of its Healing the Planet grant program.
This year, $100,000 will be awarded to tax-exempt organizations for tree plantings across Giant’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. Eligible projects must be shovel ready and include tree planting and direct costs relating to tree planting.
The 2024 Healing the Planet grant program will accept applications through Monday, July 1, at www .keeppabeautiful.org. Eligible expenses include trees native to Pennsylvania, equipment, tree signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest number of trees. Awardees will be announced in August.
This is the fourth year that the Giant Company has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past three years, more than $1.1 million has been awarded to 110 recipients
for projects that connected people and families to green spaces, improved or helped to protect local waterways and water resources, and supported projects that addressed food waste prevention, reduction, and recovery.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility, and respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., has more than 30 years of experience in organizing volunteer-driven community improvement events. Visit the aforementioned website for more information on programs or to find local events.
Other ways that Giant works to heal the planet include zero-waste initiatives, offsetting emissions, reducing food waste, and producing green energy and plastic reduction efforts. To learn more, visit www.giantfoodstores .com/pages/our-purpose.

Ways to reduce stress
Stress is a significant public health challenge. The stress response gets a person through tough times, as the body rallies to evade a threat, and typically, when the danger subsides, the body can go back to business as usual. However, when stress is ongoing, it can cause harm like chronic inflammation. In addition, the constant activation of the immune system raises the risk for many adverse health effects, including heart disease and stroke.
It is key to keep stress at a minimum for personal well-being. Several strategies may help.
People are encouraged to get active. Exercise will not make stressors disappear, but it can relieve some of the emotional responses and help to clear thoughts to allow a person to deal with problems more readily.
Laughter is also useful for managing stress. Harvard Health says laughter reduces stress hormones and is a way to experience joy, optimism, and hope.
People may also try to reduce loud noises, which can sometimes trigger a stress response. Avoiding loud scenarios or wearing earplugs or noise-cancel -
ing headphones can help a person to think more clearly and be mindful.
People should avoid unhealthy habits for dealing with stress such as drinking alcohol or smoking. These habits can exacerbate stress and lead to additional health problems.
Meditation is another stress relief technique. The Mayo Clinic says attention is focused to help calm thoughts and give a sense of peace and calm. Meditation can include guided imagery, mindfulness, and visualization exercises.
Connecting with others
is important, as meaningful relationships can create feelings of belonging. Feeling cared for and supported can help people cope with stress and be more resilient. Building connections involves reaching out to family members, friends, or community members. Sometimes just talking things out with others as a sounding board can alleviate stress, especially when listeners have experienced similar situations.
Stress can be detrimental to a person’s overall health, and taking steps to reduce stress can improve quality of life.

An additional $221,000 will be given to fund the purchase of a 126-acre conservation easement on the Camp Innabah property in East Vincent Township to supplement a prior county grant of $640,000.
Natural Lands will receive a total of more than $2.2 million for three projects: $188,184 for the purchase of a conservation easement on 109 acres in South Coventry and Warwick townships located within the Hopewell Big Woods; $50,000 for the planting of over 10,000 trees in the Peacedale Preserve in Franklin Township to improve stormwater management and create habitat; and $2 million for the acquisition of 493 acres in Wallace Township, which will be transferred to the state and managed as part of the William Penn State Forest. This site will eventually connect to Marsh Creek State Park and Chester County Water Resource’s Barneston Dam property along the county’s

The project will provide significant opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and birdwatching.
Willistown Conservation Trust will receive a total of $296,170 for two projects: $46,170 toward the installation of a bioretention basin to better manage runoff from Rushton Farm in the Rushton Woods Preserve in Willistown Township and an additional $250,000 toward the purchase of 90 acres to create a publicly accessible nature preserve, which will include new public trails. Peanuts work well in sweet desserts and are commonly found in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at lunchtime. However, peanuts can be an ingredient in savory dishes as well. In fact, peanuts often are included in the Thai dish Pad Thai, which is Thailand’s variation on a traditional Chinese stir-fry. It is salty, sweet, and often spicy. Cooks may try the following version, courtesy of “300 Best Stir-Fry Recipes” by Nancie McDermott.
Pad Thai
Serves 2 to 4
Ingredients:
4 ounces dry rice noodles
1/4 cup chicken stock or water
3 tablespoons fish sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon hot pepper flakes
3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
4 ounces boneless pork (such as loin or tenderloin) or
skinless chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced 8 to 10 medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup chopped garlic chives or green onions
2 cups bean sprouts, divided
1/3 cup chopped roasted, salted peanuts
3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
4 lime wedges
1. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil over high heat. Add noodles and remove from heat. Let stand for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until noodles are softened but still firm. Drain and rinse well in cold water. Drain and set aside.
2. In a small bowl, combine chicken stock, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and hot pepper flakes, and stir well. Set aside.
3. Heat a wok or a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of the oil and swirl to coat pan. Add garlic and toss well, until fragrant,
about 15 seconds.
4. Add pork, spreading into a single layer. Cook, undisturbed, until edges change color, about 1 minute. Toss well. Add shrimp and toss well. Cook, tossing often until shrimp are pink and firm and pork is cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes. Add noodles and cook, tossing often and pulling to separate noodles, for 1 minute.
5. Add chicken stock mixture, pouring in around sides of pan. Cook, tossing often, turning and scraping noodles to heat and soften them, until noodles curl up and are tender and shrimp are cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes more. Add an additional 1 to 2 tablespoons of chicken stock or water as needed to keep noodles from sticking or burning.
6. Push the noodles to one side, and add remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Add egg and swirl to expose to hot pan. Cook, undisturbed, until edges have begun

to set, about 15 seconds. Cook, stirring often, until egg is softly scrambled but still very moist, about 1 minute.

SNAP announces new license plate
Spay Neuter Assistance Program Inc. (SNAP) invites members of the public to purchase a new official Pennsylvania license plate to raise awareness and funds for the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. The plate was recently approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), and registration fees will be used solely to finance spay/ neuter surgeries. The plate features a drawing of a dog and a cat along with the text “spay/neuter saves lives.”
SNAP is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania that helps people access reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats. SNAP notes that spaying and neutering these animals may help to reduce the number of dogs and cats that need homes and thereby reduce the number euthanized.
The new license plate is available through the Special PennDOT License Plate Form, available at http://SNAPofPA.org. The submission procedure is detailed on the aforementioned website. SNAP will forward the forms to PennDOT, which will process the requests and send customers their plates.
