Little Porch Library Opens Locally By Ann Mead Ash

Before COVID-19 restrictions were instituted in mid-March, Christy Fieldsa, the mother of two Paradise Elementary School students, had plans to create some little libraries within the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). “I had started planning this in the winter,” recalled Christy. “(The) goal was to work with CORE Academy (at Pequea Valley High School) to have (students) build the (library) stands.” Christy had contacted Cathy Koenig, director of student services for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), about working with CORE, and she planned to ask local businesses to help fund the boxes in exchange for having the business names on the little libraries. “We would talk to businesses about helping to place them,” said Christy, who had hoped to have up to six little libraries in the district by the end of the 2020 spring school term.

When the school term ended in March and the public libraries closed to visitors, Christy began pondering how to proceed. She found a free piece of furniture on social media that fit well on her porch and provided shelving and cupboards. In the cabinet, she has placed books, coloring books, learning materials, crayons, and activity packs. Christy believes the table, sheltered on the porch, will be able to withstand the elements. Christy’s daughter, Juliana, who is a second-grade learner, loves rainbows, so Christy used rainbow colors to create a sign that reads “Little Free Porch Library” for the front of the cabinet. “Children read more when books are readily accessible,” said Christy. “(With the Little Free Porch Library), they don’t have to worry about bringing a book back, but if they want to return it and take another, they could.” Christy stated that books picked up on her porch can be dropped off in any little library in or outside the county.

“Drop it in Quarryville or Atglen or wherever else there are little libraries.” Christy’s library is located at 113 Harristown Road, Paradise, not far from Paradise Elementary School. Her friend Melody Infantolino is setting up a similar library at her home at 789 Bellevue Ave., Gap. “We would like to get some (little libraries) on the Salisbury side of the district,” she said. Looking ahead, Christy still hopes to create the free libraries and place them throughout the community. “We would ask Paradise Township if we could put one in the park or one could be placed at The Factory or at people’s homes, businesses, and other places people frequent such as gas stations,” said Christy, who emphasized that the libraries should be outdoors and accessible at all times. She also hopes to recruit a network of volunteers to check the libraries monthly and request books or other supplies as needed to keep them stocked. See Little Porch Library pg 6

VBS Goes Virtual At Calvary Monument Habitat For Humanity Welcomes New Executive Director By Ann Mead Ash

they invited me to apply,” said Wiseman, explaining how he heard about the job opening at HfHCC. “I was looking to come back to a nonprofit - to a community-based organization serving (people) in a significant way.” Wiseman explained that Habitat homeowners are selected based upon three criteria: the need for decent, affordable housing; the ability to repay the mortgage loan; and the willingness to partner with Habitat by participating in the sweat equity program. This requires the homeowners to work 200 to 400 hours on-site along with staff members and volunteer construction workers. Wiseman said one of the most common misconceptions about the organization is that people receive a Habitat home at no cost. In fact, each home is sold to a

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County (HfHCC), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide affordable housing for low-income residents, recently named Chris Wiseman as its new executive director. Wiseman succeeds Charles “Chip” Huston, who stepped down from the position on Dec. 31, 2019, after serving HfHCC for more than 17 years. Wiseman has more than 20 years of experience in financial development, strategic planning and staff and board development. Most recently, he served as the director of operations at Germantown Academy. He was also the former executive director at the Brandywine YMCA. “I knew Chip from my time working at the YMCA and I Chris Wiseman knew some board members and

Earlier in the spring, Kristen Weber, director of children’s ministries at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) in Paradise, got together with the Paradise Kids Ministry Team and staff to consider ways to turn the V that stands for vacation in vacation Bible school into a V that stands for virtual. “It was a collective decision … to pursue some form of virtual Bible school this summer,” said Weber. “We decided to see what we could put together in early May.” The result is a virtual Bible school called IncrediWorld Amazement Park, which will give youngsters an opportunity to take an exhilarating trip through God’s amazing world. Each registered student will receive a VBS kit including games, crafts, snacks, and prizes. Kits were available for pickup at CMBC, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, beginning June 22. See VBS pg 4

and Habitat families. “My role is to manage all of the operations of the organization,” he stated, noting that this includes three areas of responsibility. First, he oversees the home building process with help from the construction supervisor, and, second, he is responsible for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Caln Township, located at 1853 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville. “(The store offers) slightly used goods and home products and is one of the few sources of constant revenue,” he stated. Thirdly, his job involves family services, which includes identifying families that quality for a Habitat home. “ We hold the mortgage, so we are in constant communication with the families for the life of the home,” Wiseman noted. His goal as the new executive director is to not only build homes, but to renovate existing homes in local communities. “Rehabilitation is the goal of our board for the next year,” he said. “(After that) we will move to neighborhood revitalizations. We will look at neighborhoods and city blocks to see what we can help build to raise the value of all the homes in the community, whether it is (adding) parks or doing facelifts on buildings.” HfHCC currently has homes under construction in Coatesville, as well as West Grove, where a 40-townhome community is being built. These efforts have been limited over the past several months due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We always need people to support the organization through time, talent or treasure, (but) we have only been able to have a limited number of volunteers on-site to keep them safe,” Wiseman noted. “We hope to open up that more soon. There will be (volunteer) opportunities to work at the home sites, at the ReStore and in the office.” For more information, readers may call 610-384-7993 or visit www.hfhcc.org or www.face book.com/chescohabitat. The Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville, is gradually reintroducing face-to-face care for select health care services at its main facility and community clinics. The VA is focused on expanding access to care for veterans who have the greatest clinical need while ensuring a safe environment for veterans and employees. While VA health care will look different moving forward, veterans can continue to rely on their VA health care team for safe, high-quality care. For the quickest access to care, veterans should call the Coatesville VA at 610-383-0239 before visiting their VA clinic for any health care needs. Virtual and telephone appointments will continue to be offered for the majority of routine visits as appropriate. These options will be discussed when veterans call to schedule an appointment. Face-to-face appointments will be available to veterans who have urgent and time-sensitive needs, if their provider feels it is medically necessary. Prescriptions will continue to be mailed to veterans’ homes. Veterans should request refills at least two weeks before they run out of their prescriptions. Veterans should be prepared for the safety precautions they will encounter during their visit. All patients, visitors and employees will enter the facility

On Monday, June 29, the VBS will premiere on YouTube for families to watch at their convenience. The hourlong videos will include a welcome, songs, a Bible lesson, interactions with crafts and games leaders, and a closing complete with the popular VBS drama. “The goal is to provide families with a fun, free, and unique opportunity to explore God’s amazing creation,” said Weber. “(The VBS will) also give them the chance to (invite friends over to watch to) share the Gospel in their own communities and neighborhoods.” Weber noted that the VBS offers a little something for everyone. “For those who enjoy crafts, the day five craft video should be a hit,” she said. “For

As the county opens up, Christy is hoping the CORE Academy (Career Occupation Relative Education) will be able to create the little libraries that were originally planned when she spoke with Koenig months ago. Koenig was working with CORE Academy technology teacher Josiah Moon and the other CORE teachers to instruct the students in completing the boxes. “The goal now is to have books out there where children can access them, especially this summer,” said Christy, who said donations of books and other supplies are welcome. “People can drop them off (on the porch) or pick them up with no contact,” she said, noting that she is comfortable with families picking up and dropping off books at her home. “You just have to trust,” she said.

Annual Special Needs Auction Planned Located throughout Lancaster County are seven centers that exist to give adults and children with special needs from the Plain community a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. The workshops also offer the families of these individuals respite. The centers are Sunny Sunbeam, Caring Hearts, Penn Johns Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow. The more than 80 students who attend

the centers range in age from 14 to 76. A staff of 35 caregivers works with the students. All the centers were closed in March under COVID19 restrictions, but organizers of the centers hope to reopen them in the late summer or fall. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 6, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of

Students at the Sunny Sunbeam center in Georgetown, a workshop that serves the needs of individuals with special needs in the Plain community, make candy keychains (top photo) and are reminded of where all good things originate. Sunny Sunbeam is one of seven centers that will benefit from an auction on July 6.

create animal bedding. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, and students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they have learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard. Presently, organizers of the auction report that the parents and scholars really miss the centers. The closing has made it harder for the parents, and the students miss being out of the home with other people. “The special adults cannot wait until they may go back (to the centers), reported auction organizer Ben Kauffman. Chester County Health Officials Permit Sports Practices seeking to begin practices. No organized competition and games are allowed until the green phase of the governor’s plan. Limit practices to 25 or fewer players and coaches. Outdoor practice should be prioritized over indoor practice. Spectators, parents, volunteers and nonessential staff members must remain outside the practice area. Conduct temperature and symptom screenings of all players and coaches prior to beginning practice. Educate coaches and players about which symptoms should be monitored. Require players and coaches to wash or sanitize their hands prior to and after practice. Modify practices so players can work on individual skills, rather than on competition. If working in small groups, be mindful of keeping the players with each other, rather than switching groups or mixing groups. No equipment should be shared

among players and/or coaches; if sharing equipment cannot be avoided, proper sanitation must be done between uses. All equipment must be sanitized after each practice, following current disinfection procedures. Coaches must wear face coverings throughout practice sessions. Coaches and players must practice social distancing at all times to include no physical contact such as handshakes, fistbumps or high-fives. Spitting or chewing gum by players and coaches is not allowed. Require individual water bottles/beverages for all players and coaches. Prepackaged or boxed food should be used rather than a buffet or selfserve from a congregate bowl of snacks. Reinforce the use of handwashing or sanitization before eating or drinking. Ensure the staggered use of restroom and locker room facilities whenever possible and disinfect facilities between groups of users. Recommend players and coaches do not carpool; if carpooling is not avoidable, it should be only limited to members of the same household or require the use of masks while carpooling. Provide signage and reminders about topics such as healthy behaviors, proper hand hygiene and how to wear a face covering. Follow current procedures for players or coaches who test positive for COVID-19 or are identified as a close contact to an individual with COVID-19.

Chester County Commissioners Award Grants Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline recently announced the awarding of $5 million in grants to 248 Chester County small businesses and agricultural enterprises. The individual grants, made available through the Chester County Main Street Preservation program for small businesses impacted by COVID-19, range from just under $1,500 to $25,000. The Chester County Main Street Preservation grant program was created at the request of the Chester County commissioners in May to provide funding for small businesses and agricultural enterprises impacted by COVID-19. The Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) administered the Main Street Preservation grant program on behalf of Chester County with support from county government departments. The program invited for-profit small businesses and agricultural enterprises formed and active in 2019 or earlier, with revenues of $500,000 or less to apply. The other requirement was that the businesses must be physically located and headquartered in Chester County. The Chester County Main Street Preservation grant program received 674 applications from small businesses and agricultural enterprises, and from those applications, the 248 grants were awarded. The businesses receiving the grants are located throughout all of Chester County.
