Octorara Class of 2024 celebrates graduation
BY FRANCINE FULTONWith the threat of storms looming, the Octorara Junior-Senior High School Class of 2024 celebrated its graduation on June 10 during an indoor ceremony held in the school auditorium. However, graduates, their families, school administrators and staff members made the best of the change, not letting the weather dampen their enthusiasm.
The host of the event was Jonathan Propper, principal, who provided the welcome and a message to the students. “Today, as you stand at the intersection of your past and future, I urge you to reflect on the journey that has brought you to this point and to consider the road that lies ahead,” he said. “We have strived to instill in each of you a set of character traits that are essential in both
your personal and professional lives - boldness, responsibility, ambition, virtuousness, energy and selflessness.”
The class valedictorian was Lyla Elboubkri. The salutatorian was Carson Schempp.
In her address, Lyla spoke about the excitement and promise of the future. “This finale to our high school years is not only a metaphorical closing of doors but also the first of many opening doors of a new beginning,” she stated. “From the diverse knowledge accumulated in these brick walls … we stand at the crossroads of opportunity. There are new people, new experiences and new challenges (ahead). You have achieved greatness and will continue to do so every day.”
Class speakers were Mayrin Vidal Contreras and Jared Hodorovich.
Mayrin spoke about being a part of the Octorara Area School
District since kindergarten. “We have made it,” she said, addressing her fellow graduates. “We have been here since the beginning through the ups and downs of COVID. We have been through it all.”
She said that the years have produced lasting friendships that will continue after graduation. “We have become a family who cares for each other, helping each other when needed, putting others before ourselves and showing kindness to one another,” she said. Mayrin concluded her talk by offering a message in Spanish.
Jared’s talk revolved around the question “What does it mean to be human?” “This is life’s

Library to offer Summer Reading Program
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., will present its annual Summer Reading Program, themed “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” The schedule includes reading incentive activities and special events.
Children of all ages are invited to register for the Summer Reading Program, which opened on June 10 and will run through Monday, Aug. 16. Children should pick up a reading packet and reading log at the library’s circulation
desk in order to participate. Children are asked to read every day for 30 minutes or have books read to them. Each 30 minutes is worth one bead of their choice, which they can use to put on a cable to create a bracelet or a backpack hanger. When the cables are full of beads, children may receive another cable. The cables can be joined together to make a necklace.
The Summer Reading Program also features a patch power activity. Children may select the patch

The next scheduled event will be a talk by Harold Finigan, titled “The Extraordinary Case of Allen Ricketts,” on Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House, 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap. The event is free and open to the public.
Finigan will provide a historical account of an enslaved person, Allen Ricketts, who escaped slavery in the South and came North but was captured and sold back into slavery.
Ricketts finally escaped a second time with the help of Lancaster County Quakers, including members of Lampeter Friends Meeting in Bird-in-Hand. “Daniel Gibbs of Lampeter Meeting is very well known in Lancaster County history for

helping the slaves,” explained Sadsbury Friends Meeting member Connie Webster.
Ricketts is buried at Darby Friends Meeting in Delaware County. Finigan is a member of Darby Meeting and as such has done research on the individuals in its burial ground.
Sadsbury Friends Meeting opened its 300th anniversary year with a wedding re-enactment of Joseph Miller and Jane Kirk, the first couple to be married at Sadsbury Monthly Meeting in 1738.
In March, Finigan was the guest speaker, offering a talk about the Lenapi and Minquas Trail. Other anniversary events included a Peace Tea
held in April.
Following the June talk, “Quakers in Two Centuries, Part 2” will be presented on Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m.
Guest speaker Brenda Walker Beadenkopf will present a program about her father, Charles Walker, and his civil rights work, particularly with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charles Walker was born in the Gap area.
“(Beadenkopf) will do Part I on Thursday evening (July 25) at the Christiana Historical Society, and our talk will be on Saturday afternoon,” Webster noted.
Webster added that the Sadsbury Friends Meeting will also participate in Christiana Heritage Days in September, which marks the
anniversary of Christiana Resistance. “We will also have our ‘talking tombstone’ event that we will repeat in the fall,” she said. “It is in conjunction with the Christiana Historical Society, and it will highlight the graves of those who were active in the Christiana Resistance plus the Underground Railroad. We will get dressed up for that in Quaker clothing that we borrow from Downingtown Meeting.”

Being human is not closing ourselves off to the unknown. Instead, embrace contrasting ideas … and the joy of meeting people who are the exact opposite of you. At the end of the day we are the same species. We are all human.”
The final student speaker was Sarah Meyer, class president, who offered words of thanks to parents and
guardians, as well as school administrators. She also addressed her fellow graduates. “The community of family and friends we have become - I hope you will cherish it the rest of your lives,” she said. “The memories we have made during our time in Octorara … will always be part of who you are. As we prepare for the rest of our lives, remember
the things you will take with you - the memories, the relationships and the lessons. As we experience a new phase of our lives, keep the pieces of Octorara that have shaped (you) into the person you are now.”
Octorara superintendent
Steven Leever provided the concluding remarks. Musical performances were offered by the Octorara High School
band and the Octorara Graduation Choir. Student soloists who performed the national anthem were Menah Alkhabaz, Bella Delise and Sydnie Simonds. In addition to those already mentioned, class officers were Fallon Weber, vice president; Carrie Beecher, secretary; and Abigail Fleming, treasurer.

students to connect with each other and the leaders,” Stevenson explained. “Once our program begins at 7 p.m., we always have a fun game that we play, and we have a time of worship, and we always have a time with our small groups.”
He said classes are offered to help students read and understand the Bible. “We teach the Bible to them on their level, but we don’t ‘dumb it down,’” Stevenson noted. “We believe that
young people can read and comprehend the Bible and that encouraging words from the Bible can impact their lives and their worlds.”
Each session closes with a prayer and a challenge. “We like to give students a call to action - to apply what they learned that night to their lives,” said Stevenson.
The TFS session runs until 8:30 p.m., but the program often continues after that with additional activities.

Youths may drop in a TFS meeting any Wednesday. No preregistration is required, although attendees are asked to check in upon arrival. “If someone comes for the first time, we have them check in and collect information,” Stevenson noted. “We do encourage parents to come in and meet us. student’s life, and we want to build relationships with them.”
Youth group staff members are also available to help parents with issues they may be encountering with their children. “We try to create better alternatives for (youths) and their families,” said Stevenson. “Our specialty is teenagers and the teenage culture, so we try to help parents as much as we can with that.”

come from a church background and begin coming to youth group and throughout time they become Christian and they eventually come to our church as well,” Stevenson shared. “We consistently have around 100 students from grades six to 12 on a weekly basis. We also have a consistent team of over 25 adult volunteers that are there every week as well.”
He said that the trained group leaders are fully vetted to work with young people and are all members of Freedom Life. “We have a 1-to-4 or 1-to-6 ratio of adults to students,” he noted. “All the adults are from our church and (are) trusted to be mentors for teenagers in the community.”
He added that the Twentyfourseven group got its name because the church wants to see all youths become 24/7 followers of Jesus. “That’s our hope. We mark our success when students continue to
follow Jesus after high school and into the workplace,” he said. “For example, we just graduated about eight senior guys, and they had the same two youth leaders with them from grade six to all the way to 12th grade. We saw these guys come in as young middle-schoolers and do well not only as students of the youth group but leaders as well. They stepped up as examples for the younger students.”
In fact, Stevenson himself was a member of the youth group. “I have been youth pastor for almost nine years, and before that I was a volunteer with the group. I was a student (member of the youth group) for five years, so I have been a part of it almost 20 years,” he added.

For example, to earn a Crafty Creator patch, students may read a book about a famous artist or crafter; visit an art exhibit, museum or craft fair in person or online; or create a work of art using recycled items. For a Caped Avenger patch, youngsters may read a biography about a reallife hero, create their own comic strip, draw a picture of their favorite superhero or use old comic books to create a collage.
Those who complete their cards should bring them to the library and they will receive a patch. The patches can also fit on the beaded items.
Completing a patch card earns children both a patch and a bead. Each time a youngster brings in a reading log to be stamped or a completed patch card, he or she will receive a free ticket for a monthly prize drawing.
