New book highlights local one-room schools
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Forthe past eight years, Leona Baker, president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, has spent time interviewing people both in person and over the phone, gathering photos and completing research about local one-room schools. The result of her work is a new book, “How They Learned Their ABC’s.”
The book, which features contributions from former teachers and students, will be unveiled at a book launch on Saturday, July 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the annual White Chimneys’ Living History Event. Baker will sign and read from the book in the bridal suite at White Chimneys. There will also be a display of one-room schoolhouse photos at the event, as well as memorabilia.
schools came about after the annual Pequea Valley Alumni Association dinner in 2015. At that event, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township featured a display about public one-room schools in the Salisbury Township area, which included photos of the schools’ teachers.
“I was able to chronicle more than 29 public one-room schools operating in Salisbury Township between 1836 and 1966.”
“Those who saw the display began sharing their memories as they looked at the pictures,” Baker explained in the book’s introduction.
“I was intrigued and began asking for interviews. Some people told their friends, and more names entered my notebook.”
Baker explained that the idea to compose a book about one-room
Baker conducted most of the interviews in people’s homes. Recognizing that some of the interviewees felt uncomfortable with a recorder, she wrote notes by hand. In most cases, she returned to the contributors’ homes to check for accuracy. “I wrote the notes and typed them out and took them back
Union Presbyterian Church posts yard sale
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Union Presbyterian Church (UPC), 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood, will host a yard sale on Friday, July 14, and on Saturday, July 15, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. A variety of items will be available to purchase, and the church will use the funds raised from the sale to support its mission work and several nonprofit organizations in the area.
The items that will be available to purchase have been donated by members of UPC’s congregation and
will include children’s toys, household goods, clothing, men’s accessories and puzzles. This year, uncommon curios such as a wooden Arbuckle coffee box, an antique scythe, vintage books and a quilting frame will also be available to purchase.
UPC has organized the yard sale every summer for over 10 years.
“The sale is great because we clean out our houses and get rid of things we don’t want, which are treasures to other people,” said Colleen Sheaffer, organizer of the event. “It puts a lot of smiles on people’s faces.”

add while they were waiting for me to come back.”
The result is a softcover book with more than 400 pages, with each
chapter highlighting a different school with text and photos, both in color and black and white. “It’s filled with pictures, so if you went See New book pg 5

UPC will split the profits from the yard sale between multiple local organizations that work to better the community, such as Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM). SNM provides many services throughout the Southern End with the goal of creating a network of resources and support for its residents. SNM’s programs, such as its food bank located in Quarryville, aim to break the cycle of poverty within the community while encouraging individuality and spiritual growth. All of the organization’s initiatives are funded by donations from local residents, businesses and churches such as UPC.
The proceeds from the yard sale will also benefit North Star Initiative (NSI), an organization that offers resources for survivors of sex trafficking in
Lancaster County. NSI provides a residency program to house survivors as they receive care for both emotional and physical trauma and explore paths to rebuild their lives. Over the course of six to 18 months, participants have access to therapy, medical and dental services and skill training for employment opportunities.
Another beneficiary of the yard sale funds is the Oaks Ministry. The organization
operates two residences in Oxford to provide women with transitional housing and support services as they seek financial stability. The Oaks Ministry is a Christian-based nonprofit organization and primarily serves those in the immediate area, but often extends its services to women in need from other counties. Baker noted that members of the historical society, including Brett Snyder, Anna Mary Groff, Wanda Smale and Leonard Groff, helped her with the technical aspects of the book’s publishing. “They are the ones who helped me put the book together,” she said. “My sister, Carol, who is a published author of fiction,

located at 447 Noble Road in Christiana. The group then traveled to the new location for the groundbreaking ceremony, which was led by Sam and Michele Masteller, senior pastors.
“It’s been the current leadership’s desire to move out to the main highway for many years,” said associate pastor Chad Fisher, project manager. “(The new church) will be more centrally located right on Route 41. Where we are currently is off the beaten path. It’s only a few miles from Route 41, but not many people drive by. There will be thousands of cars driving by, and hopefully they will stop in and check us out.”
Members of the church and children from the FL Kids program also took part in the groundbreaking. They were also invited to bury prayer cards. “Families, individuals and kids from Freedom Life wrote down prayers or their faith goals or (the names of) people they would like to come to Jesus,” said Fisher. “It was (about) planting a seed and having faith to believe in what the prayer requests are.”
According to a written history of the church, it began as Victory Chapel, which evolved from campground revival meetings held in 1971. Within a short period of time, attendance multiplied, and the congregation purchased the land on Noble Road to construct the church. Throughout the years, the church was known for offering programs for the community in its building, gymnasium and adjacent woodlands.
Sam and Michele were named youth pastors in 1999 and served in that role for four years. They have been senior pastors for 20 years, and they will celebrate 25 years with the church in
October. In 2000, the name of the church was changed from Victory Chapel to Freedom Life Christian Center to help “people experience the freedom and life only God can offer.”
Freedom Life purchased the 32-acre parcel of land in West Sadsbury Township in 2018. The land is paid in full, and church members have raised more than $3 million for the building project. They are currently in the middle of a twoyear campaign to raise an additional $3 million. Freedom Life is also planning to sell its current facility along Noble Road to help pay for the expenses of the new building.
“This facility will give us more opportunities to serve our neighbors,” said Fisher. “Freedom Academy, our preschool and homeschool cooperative, will move to our new location during the week. I’m also hoping that we can offer indoor pickleball courts. There are numerous options. But for right now, we’re focusing on securing approvals and beginning the construction process.”
Once construction begins, Freedom Life is expected to move within nine to 12 months.

Summertime leisure activities
During the summer, many people have more time on their hands due to vacations from school and work and less hectic activity schedules, so this season often affords more time to relax and recharge. People may consider the following leisure activities.
Whether it is a pool, a lake or an ocean, the water beckons each summer. Simply sitting on a beach or beside a lake or pool can be a great way to pass the time without much stress.
Paddleboarding is another leisurely way to spend a summer day. Paddleboarding requires physical exertion, so this might not be the ideal activity for those looking to relax without lifting a finger. However, paddleboarders typically take to the water when it is at its most calm, making this a great activity for those who want to capitalize on peaceful, serene summer vibes.
Few activities may be more relaxing than fishing. Although there are many different ways to fish, some of which require considerable physical effort, casting a line and waiting for a
vegetables to the food bank throughout the summer.
“We would like the fresh stuff to come in on Tuesdays, which gives us two days to (distribute) it,” Dougherty noted.
Those who are unable to drop off donations during the pantry’s hours of operation may bring donations to Flowers in Bloom, 213 Main St., Parkesburg, and Hershey Motors, 3370 E. Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg, which is located at the intersection of routes 10 and 30.
The cupboard receives some food from the Chester County Food Bank, but it relies on donations of products and monetary donations. Dougherty reported that she recently had to purchase food from Walmart because of the lack of food on the cupboard’s shelves.
Additionally, Dougherty noted that no food drives, which are more prevalent during the holiday season, are currently scheduled. “We have not been able to get food drives lined up. That is what we are missing,” she said. “We have more clients and less product.”
said. “What we need is a photo ID and a piece of mail that has their address on it, and they can sign up.”
Right now, food is distributed in a drive-through format, but beginning in September, clients will be served inside the building.
The Octorara Area Food Cupboard is also seeking volunteers. “No one is paid; everyone is a volunteer,” said Dougherty. “Volunteers are needed especially because it’s summertime and people go away for vacation. I need a call list for people to come in.”
For more information about the OAFC, call 610857-4000 or visit www.oct food.com or www.facebook .com/OctoraraAreaFood Cupboard. Those who would like to coordinate a food drive should contact Dougherty in advance at OAFC424@ comcast.net. Financial donations are accepted on the website by clicking on the Donate button.
fish to bite is a relaxing activity. Additionally, spending time in nature has been found to reduce stress and lower one’s heart rate.
Books can make for good companions on warm summer afternoons. Reading is such a popular summer pastime that many bookstores set up displays featuring books that are suggested beach reads, providing inspiration for individuals who are not sure which books to dive into. And much like other summertime leisure activities, reading has been linked to reducing stress.
On summer afternoons when it is raining or too hot outside, or when individuals simply want to spend some time indoors, they might consider visiting a museum. Many museums do not typically draw crowds in summer, making this an ideal season to visit. Many offer discounted prices to individuals like seniors and students.
Summer is a season of leisure, and there are many activities that align with that spirit of relaxation.
Current and new clients seeking assistance are asked to bring in appropriate paperwork to register for food. “In July, all clients will have to (re-register),” she

Chester County convenes Reentry Coalition
Coalition on June 1 to develop a strategic plan that supports those reintegrating into the community after being in
prison. The meeting was led by Melanie Snyder, consultant on re-entry, trauma, resilience and trauma-informed care.
In addition to county court-related departments, the Reentry Coalition partners include county human services and health departments, treatment agencies, state and federal agencies, law enforcement, faith-based groups, community groups and re-entrants.
The Reentry Coalition will provide a continuum of services - ranging from mentoring to community, mental health and substance use disorder support - that begin when an offender is sentenced, continuing through incarceration and release to the community.
Over the coming months, members of the Reentry Coalition will meet to prepare and review the strategic plan, and CJAB hopes to finalize it for implementation by the end of 2023.

Summer is synonymous with relaxation and fun in the sun. The relaxed nature of summer can make it easy to overlook safety concerns that run the gamut from heat-related illnesses to bug bites to water play injuries. Keeping the following safety tips in mind can ensure the coming months are as safe as they are fun.
Sizzling summer days pose a significant threat if the proper measures are not take to avoid heat-related illnesses. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), heat exhaustion, which occurs when the body loses excessive water and salt, and heat stroke, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted is marked by the body’s inability to control its temperature, can escalate rapidly. The NSC identified individuals who work outdoors, infants and young children, people who are 65 and older, people who are ill, and people who are overweight as those most at risk of heat-related illnesses. Such illnesses are entirely preventable, and the CDC recommends remaining indoors in air-
conditioned rooms, drinking plenty of fluids but avoiding alcohol, wearing loose and lightweight clothing, wearing a hat when outdoors, and replacing salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks.
Additionally, people should take care of their skin when spending time outside. It is imperative that individuals apply sunscreen before going outside and then reapply it throughout the day as necessary. Not only is sunburn unpleasant, but it also increases a person’s risk for skin cancer and affects the body’s ability to cool itself, which can increase the risk for heat stroke.
Mosquitoes are more than a mere nuisance. Mosquitoes can carry an assortment of viruses, including the Zika virus and West Nile virus. Such viruses are often thought of as a problem for people in faraway countries, but the NSC noted that the Aedes mosquito, which is a known transmitter of the Zika virus, has appeared in various regions of the globe, including the continental

United States and popular vacation destinations like Mexico and Central and South America. The NSC recommends that everyone, and especially individuals who work outdoors, apply mosquito repellant before going outside and continue to do so as necessary throughout the day. In addition, clothing treated with the insecticide permethrin may help to repel mosquitoes.
The CDC reported that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death of children between the ages of 1 and 4. Although children might be most vulnerable to
water-related accidents and death, adults also must exercise caution when around the water. The NSC noted that individuals who do not know how to swim should avoid the water, be it in a lake, river, ocean, or pool. Individuals also should never swim alone and only swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard. When swimming at a private residence, children should never be allowed to swim unless an adult is supervising. Adults also should avoid alcohol when swimming.
Summer is a season to relax, but it is also a season when safety should be a top priority for people of all ages.

Scherer awarded scholarship
The Hearing Loss Association of America - Chester County Chapter has announced the award of the seventh annual Mortimer Bauer Memorial Scholarship to Jimmy Scherer, who is graduating from West Chester East High School. The scholarship seeks to encourage postsecondary education among the high school population with hearing loss. Scherer was chosen for his award-winning essay and a life spent learning how to speak up for himself and advocating for people with hearing loss. He received the award and certificate during an award ceremony and ice cream social on June 8 at Christ Community Church in West Chester.
Scherer was born with sensorineural hearing loss in both of ears but has a passion for music. Through listening to and playing music, he has been able to develop his hearing abilities so he can determine pitches, the key of a piece, chord progressions, and rhythms by ear, and he is able to play from memory. He noted the importance of his teachers and mentors Tim Celfo, Genevieve Kline, and Chris Orlando in his music journey so far.
Scherer plans to attend Duquesne University in the fall to study music technology with a focus on the cello. His goal is to work as a music producer and composer for a media or game company.
HLAA is a consumer advocacy organization for people with hearing loss and provides information, education, support, and advocacy to enable those with hearing loss to live full and productive lives. For more information about the HLAA - Chester County Chapter, visit www.hearingloss chesco.com or www.facebook .com/hearinglosschesco/ or email hlaachesco@gmail.com.
