reshly picked cucumbers, radishes, onions, mushrooms, squash, blueberries and more are available to Chester County residents through the Fresh2You Mobile Market operated by the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB). The slogan of the mobile pantry is “Bringing the Bounty of Chester County to Everyone.” The mobile market will be open at sites throughout the county through Saturday, Nov. 19. The current schedule includes stops at the Coventry Mall in Pottstown, the Phoenixville Senior Center, the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, M&T Bank in Honey Brook, Oxford Public Library and Coatesville Masonic Lodge. Additional items are purchased from local growers. On a recent Saturday in Coatesville, shoppers were choosing from an assortment of produce in the parking

available, volunteers also do cooking demonstrations at the market. All forms of payment, including cash, credit/debit cards, SNAP/EBT (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/electronic benefits transfer) cards and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) vouchers, are accepted. Customers at the Mobile Market receive matching dollars in the form of Veggie Bucks that can be used for additional fruit and vegetables when shopping with SNAP/EBT. Also offered is the FreshRX program, a partnership between CCFB and local health care providers. “Basically, we work with health care providers in the area who are actually able to write prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables,” she said. “Those patients come to us (to fill) their prescriptions.” The market schedule is subject to change. When a natural disaster like a hurricane occurs and traditional forms of communication like cellphones are unavailable, amateur radio operators, often referred to as “hams,” are called in to provide communication services. This was also true on 9/11, when hams were asked to set up their transmitting and receiving equipment until other communication services could be restored. See Field Day pg 4

lot of the Masonic Lodge, which is a new location this year. “Right now, it’s onions. This is their time to shine,” said Roberta Cosentino, CCFB’s director of community food access and education. “We have scallions, leeks and three different kinds of spring onions. We also have a special kind of onion that our farmer grows called Ailsa Craig onions. They are so mild and delicious.” “We have three different kinds of cabbages and summer squash. We’ve even got some nice cauliflower, broccoli and Romanesco,” she continued. “The purple cabbage is more tender and sweet than a typical green cabbage. This is the first year that our farmer is growing carrots, so we are really excited to have those.” Soon to be offered are tomatoes, corn on the cob, watermelon and other summer crops as they become available. In addition to the fresh produce, the market offers recipe bundles that provide all of the ingredients to make that week’s featured dish. “This week our featured dish is a summer lentil sauté with carrots, celery, onions, garlic, sage and bit of cabbage,” Cosentino said. To help prevent fraud targeting seniors, the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO) recently collaborated with the SeniorLAW Center of Chester County and local senior centers to present workshops titled “Senior Fraud: Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones.” The workshops were planned in connection with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, which was a time to focus on protecting seniors from abuse, fraud, violence, negligence and other harm. The hourlong program was presented on June 8 at the West Chester Senior Center, on June 14 at Brandywine Valley Active Aging (BVAA) Downingtown Senior Center and on June 21 at BVAA Coatesville Senior Center. Attendees heard about different types of scams, who is affected, signs to look for and whom to call if one suspects he or she is being targeted. Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox warned community members to beware of callers who request money or gift cards, claiming that a relative of the victim has been or will be imprisoned. She added that law enforcement officers do not request money or sensitive information by phone. Community members should also be wary if a scammer tries to create a feeling of urgency, noted Victoria Long, legal advocate at the SeniorLAW Center Chester County. For additional preventative

To prepare for an emergency, hams hold an annual practice emergency drill event called Field Day, which typically occurs on the fourth weekend in June. The event dates back to 1933 and is sponsored each year by the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL), which was formed in 1914. Field Day events take place throughout the United States and Canada. Locally, Field Day took place on June 25 and 26 in Ludwig’s Corner, attracting participants from throughout Chester County. The goal, other than transmitting and receiving messages under emergency conditions, was to see how many other Field Day stations the operators could contact in a 24-hour period in the U.S. and Canada. Participants used voice and Morse code when making contacts with other radio operators, as well as a digital communication using computers. “Instead of using the laptop to get on the internet, it is connected to the radio, and it is transmitting the digital signal to the station on the other end,” explained Field Day participant Joe Fell. “Digital is preferred when you need a transcript of the communication exchange. Morse code is a major benefit

when signals are weak since it can easily be heard.” Fell designed and operates a repeater in the Parkesburg area; a repeater is a radio station that automatically takes an incoming signal and simultaneously “repeats” it to a wide area. “A repeater is a transmitter that is remotely located, typically on a mountain,” said Fell. “It receives a radio signal from a car or home and retransmits it out at much higher power. My repeater, which is one of the most active ones is Chester County, has 80 users. (While not a club), we have a breakfast once a month, and everyone that operates on (my) repeater wanted to participate in this year’s Field Day.” He reported that the age span of the operators on Field Day ranged from 10 to 80 years old. “During our 24 hours of operation, the stations

Fell noted that the participants utilized solar or generator power, antennas, transmitters and receivers commonly called transceivers while enjoying plenty of coffee since the event lasted 24 hours. “Planning has already begun for next year’s Field Day,” he added. Those interested in becoming amateur radio operators must obtain a license and pass an exam. “(Which) examination is given is based on the class of licensed that is being applied for,” noted Fell. Good’s Store in Ephrata has moved to a new location, 1127 S. State St., where the former Kmart store was located. The building will be shared with Dutch-Way Farm Market, which plans to open in late summer. The portion of the building occupied by Good’s Store has about 34,000 square feet of retail space, which is nearly four times larger than the former store, located at 1686 W. Main St. With the larger retail space, the new Ephrata store offers an expanded selection of merchandise across the board. Clothing and footwear are prominent categories, with brands including Carhartt, Wrangler, Under Armour, Carolina, Muck Boots and Skechers. The selection of work boots has also expanded considerably. “A Guide to Local Farm Products in Chester County” offers information on a wide variety of farms and markets.

This year’s Farmer of the Year, Darryl King of West Grove, is featured in the guide. He and his wife, Pam, grow corn, soy, wheat, and barley, primarily for animal feed. King has become a strong advocate for the preservation of farmland. The new guide also details the county’s farm diversity from the 32-acre, womanowned micro dairy Pigeon Creek Farm in Pottstown to Styer’s Peonies flower farm in Chadds Ford to Thorncroft Equestrian Center in Malvern. Thorncroft is one of many therapeutic riding centers in Chester County that are listed in the guide. The guide also includes tips on the county’s biggest crop, mushrooms, grown in and around Kennett Square.

The Chester County Agricultural Council has issued its new “A Guide to Local Farm Products in Chester County.” The publication features the county’s diverse array of farms and locally grown farm products from strawberry fields to rows of peonies. The guide, highlighting over 125 family-owned farms and markets, includes a map and farm addresses to make the businesses easy to find, plus a chart that indicates what products are currently in season.

PA residents scramble to get State Silver Bank Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because they are the only Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. “The phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone will be trying to get them while they still can,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania

State Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents already have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars in 1947 and there can never be any more which moves them into the collectible coin status. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walk-

ing Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Roll is a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents and non-state residents must pay full price if any remain. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Bank Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

Q GOT ‘EM: These are the only Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. Each Bank Roll is loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars some dating back to the early 1900’s so everyone who wants them better hurry.

Only State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value starting at 7:30 am today explained. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Sealed Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident while they still can,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars found inside the Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are 90% pure silver so Pennsylvania residents who get their hands on them will be glad they did,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s 15 U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because state residents who miss the deadline and non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “U.S. Gov’t issued coins like these are 90% pure silver and a favorite of dealers, collectors and the like,” Lynne said. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So the only thing readers need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s publication,” Lynne said. Q

SILVER: One of the last Silver coins minted for circulation

LAST MINTED: in Philadelphia, Denver & San Francisco

STATE MINIMUM: Of just $39 per coin set by National Mint and Treasury

ENLARGED: Year varies 1916-1947

RARELY SEEN: Minted by the U.S. mint in the early 1900’s

TO CLAIM THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE BANK ROLLS CALL: 1-800-260-7945 EXT. WHH1043 Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberty Half Dollars were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. So there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberty Half Dollars date back to the early 1900’s and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know Walking Liberties are collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-260-7945 Ext. WHH1043 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist with the exclusive State Restricted Design. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

PENNSYLVANIA - “Pennsylvania residents get first dibs. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. Beginning at precisely 7:30 am this morning State of Pennsylvania Sealed Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “But here’s the good news. The Bank Rolls themselves have been marked State Restricted by price which means the state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury is restricted to Pennsylvania residents only and non-state residents must pay full price if any Bank Rolls remain,” Lynne confirmed This is important to note. “These are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls known to exist. You can’t get them at banks or credit unions or the Government since they do not produce State Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls. In fact, you can only get them bearing the exclusive State Restricted Design and rolled this way directly from National Mint and Treasury,” Lynne

Rams Head Wins Chef’s Best Competition ACT in Faith of Greater West Chester recently announced the winner of its ninth annual Chef’s Best culinary competition, featuring the top restaurants in the West Chester area. Rams Head Bar & Grill, located on Market Street in downtown West Chester, received the most votes from diners for its lamb lollies with homemade chimichurri and balsamic reduction. The event raised $10,000 to enable ACT in Faith of Greater West Chester to support the unemployed and underemployed in the

greater West Chester community. This is the second time that Rams Head has won the award, according to ACT in Faith board president Denise Antonelli, who is also a partner at the West Chester law firm Gawthrop Greenwood. Chef’s Best, the signature fundraiser of ACT in Faith of Greater West Chester, featured a twist this year to accommodate COVID restrictions. What was a one-night, in-person event morphed into a six-week restaurant tour from April 11 to May

presented by

26 of Rams Head, Opa Tavern, Split Rail Tavern and Slow Hand. All four participating restaurants offered a free signature appetizer to patrons taking part in Chef’s Best. A ticket entitled diners to one coupon for each of the four restaurants on the tour and the opportunity to vote for the “Best of Chef’s Best.” This year’s event raised thousands of dollars for ACT in Faith, and the interfaith organization is looking forward to returning to its singlenight event in 2023.

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.’s 15th Annual Golf Outing was held on June 10. We would like to extend our thanks to all the generous sponsors and golfers who helped raise more than $22,000. This brings us to more than $218,000 raised over the years. View pictures of the event at epcgolfouting.com.
