Wesley the therapy dog, Pine Creek Animal Hospital, Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue and Parkesburg Area Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) were among the participants in a Pet Fair presented on July 10 by the Atglen Public Library (APL). The first-time

Freedom Life Church members who volunteered at Octorara Junior-Senior High School on Serve Day included (from left) Larry Fuller, Jenny Kauffman, Claire High, Kim Gentry and Sally Englerth.

Church Volunteers Take Part In Serve Day “We want to take our faith out beyond the walls of the church,” said Sally Englerth, one of the volunteers from Freedom Life Church who participated in a day of community service locally as part of the nationwide observance of Serve Day on July 10. According to www.serveday.com, the day provides churches across the world with opportunities to serve their local communities and share the love of God through practical acts of kindness. It is based on Mark 10:45, which reads, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Volunteer Larry Fuller affirmed, “We want to serve the Lord and serve the community.” Freedom Life currently has two locations, the main campus in

Christiana and another campus in Centre County. Volunteers from both campuses took part in the projects. In Chester County, volunteers partnered with Good Works to assist with an ongoing construction project in Coatesville. Lancaster County volunteers took part in a cleanup at Muddy Run Park, where they cleared trails by cutting branches, moving rocks and pulling weeds and picked up trash on the site’s disc golf course and campground. Centre County campus volunteers worked in Unionville Park painting the gazebo and pavilion and pulling weeds. Main campus volunteers worked at Octorara Junior-Senior High School in Atglen, where they cleaned up the school’s greenhouse. Volunteers also reorganized a storage space in the school. “ We did weeding around the

greenhouse, and (other volunteers) painted the dugout,” said Fuller, explaining that the school provided the church with a list of jobs that needed to be completed. The greenhouse at the school, which is maintained by the Octorara FFA, includes raised bed gardens where various vegetables and fruits are grown and donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. At Freedom Life’s main campus, 447 Noble Road, Christiana, services are held on Sundays at 9 and 11 a.m. The Centre County campus meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. at 113 Sunset Acres, Bellefonte. An online campus offers livestreamed services on Sundays at 9 and 11 a.m. on YouTube, on Facebook and at https://online.freedom.life. For more details and information about upcoming church activities, visit www.freedom.life or www.facebook.com/freedomlife.tv.

event, which took place in the parking lot of Atglen Borough Hall, was held in keeping with the theme of the library’s Summer Reading Program, “Tails and Tales.” Wesley was at the Tails and Tales Pet Fair with his owner, Amy Celona, who explained that Wesley visits the APL as part of the PAWS for Reading program. “Reading to a dog (provides) a non-judgmental audience,” Celona said, noting that Wesley was available for Zoom reading sessions with children when the library was shut because of COVID-19. Wesley also visits children every other week at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. “He’ll get up on the bed with a (sick) child and just lay down,” Celona noted.

houses of worship to showcase what we can do in our own community to harness free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm and cool our buildings, heat water and (reduce) monthly utility bills,” said Nora Ziegler, a retired public school teacher and a Chester County resident who is coordinating the Chester County portion of the Clean Energy Tour. She noted that the tour was held in person in 2019, but that it moved to a virtual format in 2020 because of the pandemic. Organizers decided to make this year’s tour virtual as well. “2020 was the first time that the solar tour had ever (gone virtual). We did have about 15 homes last year, but we are working hard to get other types of buildings this year,” said Ziegler. Previous years have highlighted Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, whose solar system powers several of its buildings, including its café. Several municipal facilities were on the tour in 2019, including those in Uwchlan Township, which used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. In southern Chester County, the tour included two large solar installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlboro Mushrooms.

Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, whose café is powered by solar energy, was featured during the Chester County Clean Energy Tour in 2019.

“Last year, we (highlighted) a family business - Lani Ice in Ludwigs Corner, which is solar powered,” said Ziegler. Lani Ice offers smoothies, shaved ice other products from its solar-powered trailer. Those interested in participating on the tour will be asked to submit photos and a three-minute video about their use of solar power. Technical help will be provided if needed. This year, a live, in-person event at the West Vincent Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, will serve as the kickoff to the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. The virtual tour, with videos and photo presentations, will be available at www.nationalsolartour.org,

starting on Saturday, Oct. 2. “Chester County ranks second in solar installations in the state,” Ziegler pointed out. “For the last two years, we have led the nation in local clean energy open houses. People who are interested in the concept and don’t know that much about it (are encouraged to participate). Maybe they are thinking about using solar at their homes.” Those interested in showcasing their use of solar power in the tour are asked to complete an interest form at www.nationalsolartour.org. The Clean Energy Tour is free and open to the public, and participating sites also do not have to pay a fee. For more details, contact Ziegler at noraziegler@me.com.

Hot Weather Safety Information Offered The arrival of summer brings high temperatures and high humidity, increasing health risks when people work and play outside. Risks are especially great for older people and young children. Patient First has provided information on heat-related illnesses and their treatment and prevention. Excessive heat can cause several health problems, including heat exhaustion. Symptoms include profuse sweating; headache; dizziness; nausea; vomiting; rapid heartbeat; cool, moist, pale skin; and muscle cramps. If someone is experiencing symptoms of being heat exhausted, move the person to a cooler location, apply cool, wet cloths to their body, and give them cool water to drink. If the person vomits or refuses to drink, call 911. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body loses its ability to control its own temperature. Symptoms may include very high body temperature; confusion and slurred speech; hot, dry skin or excessive sweating; seizures; and loss of consciousness. It is important to take action if a heat stroke occurs, as this condition can be fatal. Get the person out of the sun - preferably into an air-conditioned room - and call 911. Provide cool water for the person to drink, soak his or her clothing with water, and keep surrounding air circulating. Other early warning signs of heat-related illness may include cramps and a heat rash. If someone is showing signs of a heat-related illness, he or she should seek medical attention immediately. Several steps may be taken to help people avoid heat-related illnesses. People should wear light-weight, light-colored clothing made of breathable material, like cotton. They should stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. They should avoid strenuous outdoor activity on hot days, and if they must be outside, they should take frequent breaks in a cool place. Air-conditioning is the best way to protect against heatrelated illness. During extreme heat, anyone who does not have air-conditioning at their home may try to spend time in air-conditioned locations, such as a shopping mall, public library, or public health-sponsored heatrelief shelter in their area.

Christian Leinbach, Kevin Barnhardt and Michael Rivera. Leinbach said he was surprised to learn statistics about color blindness. “One in 12 males are color blind. One in 200 females are color blind,” he said. “I did not know the disparity was that great.” After a count of three, the men donned the glasses and immediately began looking at the scenery around them. “When I put them on, immediately some red and greens had a bright, vivid and drastic change. I started looking to familiar objects, my car, the balloons and plants to see the difference,” said Litwin. “As I wore the glasses longer, more color changes began to stand out.” “Now I have to go back and learn colors, but it’s a great opportunity, and I am thankful for it,” Litwin added. “Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in language you

Eight pairs of the glasses are now available to borrow through Berks County Public Libraries (BCPL). The glasses were unveiled during a ceremony held at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 26. According to a 2020 survey conducted by Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, the Fourth of July is the No. 1 holiday for backyard grilling in the U.S. Sixty-eight percent of grill owners surveyed said they host a barbecue on that day. The poll also revealed that carnivores rule when it comes to grilling. Eighty-eight percent of those who participated in the survey said they prefer meat, specifically steak, followed by hamburgers, then hot dogs. However, a respectable 50% of respondents said that they liked to grill vegetables. There are strong opinions when it comes to the preferred method of grilling.

Whether it’s due to convenience or preference, 61% of grill owners use a gas grill. Some of those gas grillers also use charcoal, as the poll shows, with 49% of grillers using this method. Just 10% use an electric grill. The popularity of smoker grills has increased over the last several years. Much like die-hard charcoal users, smoker grills seem to attract a very loyal customer base. One of my favorite foods to prepare on the grill is corn on the cob - especially street corn. If you go to a fair or farmers market this summer and there’s a vendor selling street corn, my advice it to run - don’t walk - and buy it. You’ll find a recipe that I like to use below.

Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline approved the awarding of $4.2 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants at a recent public commissioners’ meeting. The grants are made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program, which offers funding to municipalities and nonprofit land preservation organizations. This commitment of county funds will help leverage an additional $10 million of non-county funds. The grants include the following. East Bradford Township will receive more than $1.32 million to purchase the 156acre Starr Farm property for public recreation and natural resource protection, expanding the existing 25-acre Starr Farm Park and providing connections to several other township parks and preserves. East Pikeland Township will receive $92,390 for the construction of the Ridge Road Park, a new 16-acre park, featuring a community garden and orchard, a dog park, and

paved trails. The township will also be given $250,000 for the first phase of development of the new 115-acre Hidden River Park and Preserve, including a 47-space parking lot and 2 miles of multi-use trails, including a connection to the county’s Schuylkill River Trail. West Pikeland Township will receive $80,727 for Phase 2 improvements at the new 62-acre Walnut Lane Park, including adding the wearing course of the paved drive and parking area, pavement markings, shade trees, buffer trees, benches, and an information kiosk. The French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust will receive $180,964 for a 57acre conservation easement on the Maxwell property in West Vincent Township, with the goals of protecting agricultural resources and strengthening agricultural infrastructure. The Green Valleys Watershed Association will be awarded $14,500 for the Horse-Shoe Trail Improvements at Welkinweir, a 224acre publicly accessible nature preserve in East Nantmeal

Township. Nearly 1 mile of new trail will be established, including re-routing over 3,000 linear feet of the trail onto Welkinweir, eliminating a steeply eroding section of the trail currently traversing non-protected, private land. Natural Lands will receive money for three projects, including $50,000 to construct the Bryn Coed Preserve - Beaver Hill parking lot in West Vincent Township, along with a kiosk, parking lot sign, and trail signage, as well

as $18,000 for a portion of the transaction expenses involved with a fully donated conservation easement on the 26-acre Isabella Furnace site, which is on the National Register of Historic Places in West Nantmeal Township. Chester County has funded the preservation of over 57,000 acres of farmland, open space, nature preserves, and parks in partnership with farmers, municipalities, nonprofits, and landowners in all 73 municipalities.

A grant through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program will allow East Bradford Township to purchase the Starr Farm, expanding the Starr Farm Park.

Funeral Home To Open New Location The Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory will open a new funeral home location with an on-site crematory in Willow Street in 2022. The new location marks the sixth funeral home and third crematory owned by the Snyder family, which will also celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary in 2022. Designed by Cox & Evans Architects, the facilities will be built on nearly three acres of what was previously an office building and farmland. The new 12,500-square-foot building will include 145 parking spaces. Site work design has been done by RGS Associates. Fulton Bank is providing financing for the project, and Benchmark Construction will be the general contractor. The modern funeral home will feature several amenities, including a state-of-the-art crematory, a spacious lobby, a large chapel with vaulted ceilings and 350 seats, a small chapel with a fireplace and vaulted ceilings, four

arrangement offices, a witness room, a comfort room, a picturesque patio and garden located off the large chapel, a monument office, a pre-planning office and a large carport for family comfort. Kelly Gramola Townsend will serve as the supervising funeral director for the new funeral home location. She is a native of Lancaster County and has spent a significant amount of time with her family in Willow Street. The design of the funeral home will combine modern styles with architectural elements commonly found in the Lancaster area, including touches of limestone like those found on Lancaster County barns. Each room will have an open design and feature large windows to fill gathering spaces with as much natural light as possible. Once the new funeral home is complete, Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory will operate on-site crematories both north and south of

Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was recently republished in its third edition. “Summer at Stewart Creek” was recently revised and then released on Dec. 1, 2020, and “Twelfth Winter,” was released on June 1. The remaining book, “Stranded in Snow Shoe,” is due out in early 2022; this book, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter” make up the “Summer of Two Worlds” trilogy. “Summer of Two Worlds” has also been released alongside two other titles by Moore: “Journey Into Darkness,” a story in four parts, and “Blake’s Story: Revenge and Forgiveness.” At the time, these three books were released as Civil War and Native American historical fiction for middle grade through adult readers. “Summer at Stewart Creek” includes photo illustrations of an HO-scale model railroad that the author created when envisioning the book’s setting. The cover photos for this book feature the Tahoo, a locomotive in the collection at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. The Tahoo was used on the real-life Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Nevada. All Moore’s titles are available at the Landis Valley Farm Museum, Cricket’s Antiques and Garden Market on Route 322 in Glenmoore, and online at www.jarthurmoore.com, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. Books can also be ordered through independent book stores.

School Summer Internships, enabling the program to hire more interns and add a new location, which will significantly increase access to the TTG program. Project Innovation 2021 grants were presented to eligible nonprofits in 11 markets across the U.S., all of which include stations owned by Project Innovation’s sponsors. Ten Philadelphia area organizations received a total of $315,000. These 10 organizations offer programs that are addressing local community issues through innovative solutions in the areas of community engagement, culture of inclusion, next generation storytelling and youth education and empowerment. This is the fourth consecutive year that NBC10, Telemundo62 and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation have recognized local nonprofits with Project Innovation grants. The grant application period opened on Jan. 8 and closed on Feb. 12. The stations created and gathered community panels to review grant applications and select final grant recipients. This year, the program funding levels increased in each participating market to $315,000, up from $225,000, and to $3.475 million across the 11 markets, up from $2.475 million.
