Families will learn together at STEAMS Camp

With many summer programs, parents drop off their children so that they can enjoy a day of fun and activities. Freedom Academy, however, is offering a STEAMS (science, technology, engineering, art, math and Scripture) Camp, where families can enjoy spending time together.

The interactive, educational day camp will take place at Freedom Life’s main campus, 447 Noble Road, Christiana, from Tuesday, Aug. 1, through Thursday, Aug. 3, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Freedom Academy recently completed is first year as a homeschool co-op, where STEAMS activities were included. “We wanted to offer something fun over the summer for families to continue learning together,” explained Freedom Academy

director Cynthia Kreider. “The kids do not have to be enrolled in Freedom Academy to participate (in the camp). We welcome all parents and children to enjoy the experience.”

“We want to introduce people to Freedom Academy and have something fun and inexpensive for families to do together.”

Kreider recently conducted the STEAMS Camp at Freedom Life’s campus in Centre County, and many of those activities, including building structures, performing science experiments and creating art, will be offered in Christiana.

“We made foam puffy paint, and they painted 3-D pictures. We will

do an egg drop, and they will build a structure to keep the egg from breaking,” Kreider explained. “Depending on the age group, they will make paper roller coasters, and the younger kids will make marble runs with cardboard tubes. We will build catapults and cotton-ball launchers.”

A fee will be charged per child, and registration is open for children in prekindergarten through 12th grade. Projects will vary in degree of difficulty according to the age and abilities of the families. Parents are required to remain on-site and assist their children.

“We want to introduce people to Freedom Academy and have something fun and inexpensive for families to do together,” said Kreider.

She said that the STEAMS Camp is designed to provide parents with an opportunity to spend quality time

Summer flowers are available for picking at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church’s “growing kindness” garden, which was established by the church’s youth group in front of the church.

The flowers were planted in two raised-bed gardens. “A couple of years ago, the Girl Scouts did a raised-bed garden, and we repurposed that area for a community garden, where we planted some zinnias, dahlias and geraniums,” explained

Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), formerly known as Chester County Women’s Services, will hold its third annual Summer Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will be held at a new location this year - West Brandywine Township Park. Admission to the family-friendly event is free. Activities will include yard games, See Summer Picnic pg 4

pastor Eric Dorville.

The garden, which is designed to provide flowers for the community, was planted by church youths under the guidance of new youth group leader Meghan Kloss. “The children, with adult supervision, started it in June by planting seeds,” Dorville noted. “They came over every day to water and take care of it. The (purpose of the garden) is to grow kindness.”

Most recently, youths gathered on July 10 to weed the garden, trim back the dahlias to encourage more See Kindness Garden pg 5

live music and food trucks, and there will be face painting and balloon animals for children. A petting zoo is also planned.

Scheduled to perform in the park’s amphitheater are Bryar Bullock from Freedom Life (FL) Church in Christiana and his worship band, as well as youths from FL Kids, who will sing and dance.

Singer Erica Barnes will be featured, as well as Gabe Mahalik, who will perform comedy and rap. There will also be a drone demonstration by officer Richard Craig from the West Brandywine Township Police Department. The guest speaker will be Joe Knopp, executive producer of the movie “Unplanned.”

“We encourage people to bring blankets and chairs and stay for a while. We will have all entertainment throughout the whole day,” said Stacey McNutt, CCCC events coordinator. A schedule of speakers and performers will be listed one week prior to the event at www.ccconnectcareinfo.org/picnic.

Food trucks that will be on hand include the Nacho Depot and Philly Pretzel Factory. Rita’s Italian Ice will be provided free of charge to all attendees, and children age 12 and under will receive a complimentary lunch.

There will also be an opportunity to win gift baskets, with separate child-friendly baskets available to youngsters. All in attendance will receive a goodie bag.

McNutt said that the park is the perfect venue for a family picnic. “We are super excited about it,” she said. “It gives us more of an opportunity to reach people as a whole. Having the amphitheater is perfect for what we are planning.”

CCCC is a local nonprofit pregnancy care medical center. It was known as Chester County Women’s Services for 37 years before the name change in 2022. The new name is meant to reflect the agency’s effort to provide assistance to all family members, not just mothers.

At the upcoming picnic, Myriam

Ruager, CCCC executive director, will speak about the agency’s mission. “We will have a Connect Care tent and we will sell our new apparel and baby onesies and have more information about the program,” said McNutt.

CCCC offers free limited ultrasounds for expectant mothers and provides basic pregnancy care such as prenatal vitamins and free nurse consultations throughout the course of the pregnancy. Parenting classes are offered, as well as Bible studies and peer counseling. Families can use the points they earn from attending classes to “purchase” parenting essentials from the CCCC Parenting Boutique.

To learn more or to schedule an appointment, visit www.ccconnect care.org or call 610-383-0930.

The GPS address for West Brandywine Township Park is 198 Lafayette Road, Coatesville. For more information about the picnic or to register, visit the previously mentioned website. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

we bat all 12, and every kid gets their time on the bench.”

The tournament was held in Essex, Md.

The Sluggers opened with a 12-1 Saturday morning win over the Owings Mills’ Spartans. Later that evening, the Sluggers settled for an 8-8 tie against the Arlington All-Stars.

“The Saturday games were for seeding, so we went into the single elimination Sunday games as the second seed,” Galbreath explained.

Sunday morning, the Sluggers defeated In the Dirt 8-1 and in the afternoon pulled out a 4-3, comefrom-behind win over the Blue Chips to get to the finals. There the Sluggers defeated the top seed, Tripletown Aces, 4-2 to claim the tournament crown.

“It was a total team effort,” said Galbreath. “We pitched well; made a lot of great plays defensively, including turning multiple double plays; and had some great throws home from the outfield to nail runners at the plate. Everyone put the ball in play, and we had very few strikeouts against some really good pitching,” he added. “We had multiple extra base hits, and we ran the bases really well.”

The Parkesburg Lions Club has been collecting plastics to earn free benches as part of a recycling program offered by the Trex Company. The Lions Club placed its first bench in the community at the bus stop near the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St. It was dedicated to the late Jim Norton, a longtime Lions Club member and a past member of the Parkesburg Library Board.

The Lions Club also provided a

The community is welcome to donate plastics for the bench program.

Items such as grocery bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves and dry cleaning bags are accepted, among other items. Currently, there are receptacles at the Parkesburg Free Library; Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; Octorara

with their children as they work on projects together. “One of the things that homeschool families learn is that they get to build a relationship with their kids, and they get to really know their kids,” Kreider noted. “It would be fun for parents to see how their kids learn while they are doing things. If they have multiple kids, their youngest and oldest will have different experiences. That multigenerational learning will give them a different perspective.”

Freedom Academy offers preschool classes, as well as project-based learning electives, creative electives and core classes, for homeschool students. More than 50 students were enrolled in Freedom Academy in its first year.

Kreider said the goal of the academy is to offer support to homeschooling families. “We want to partner with families as they homeschool to have that community and be a resource for families if they need help,” she stated.

For more information about Freedom Academy or to register for the STEAMS Camp, visit www.freedom.life/academy or call 610-593-5959. It is recommended that families register before Monday, July 31; however, walk-ups will be accepted.

Community Foundation to offer grants

Chester County Community Foundation will accept applications for Capacity Building Grants until Wednesday, Sept. 13. Capacity building projects should strengthen a nonprofit in areas such as mission, vision and strategy, governance and leadership, strategic relationships, fundraising and development, or operations.

All grant applicants must be charitable, tax-exempt organizations with 501(c)(3) certification, and they must be located in and serve Chester County. The goal of the Community Foundation’s grantmaking is to strengthen the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations serving the Chester County region.

Nonprofits may submit one grant proposal annually. Proposals are shared with the Grants Committee overall as well as made available to each of the separate donor-advised funds. Grant monies are distributed by February of the following year and typically range from $500 to $5,000.

For more information, visit https://chescocf.org/receive/apply -for-grants/. Applications may be emailed to grants@chescocf.org.
