9/11 Memorial Stair Climb To Remember NYC Firefighters By Dayna M. Reidenouer
After hijacked airplanes impacted the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, triggering their collapse, the nation vowed to never forget the lives lost in that tragedy. A decade later, Lancasterarea firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. As a result, Yuill and his firefighter colleagues hosted the first Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb, which was patterned off similar events held around the country. “It’s a good event to focus people’s attention on what actually happened. We promised to never forget,” Yuill said. “(The stair climb) makes (9/11) more real - you’re doing what they were
doing: climbing steps.” Now, as another anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during the ceremony too. Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. A video will play on the stadium’s See 9/11 Stair Climb pg 5

The Summer Reading Program at the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana is filled with interactive programs for young patrons, as well as fun activities and reading opportunities. This year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories,” is intended to open minds to a very wide range of stories and presentations. On July 18, special guest Liz Bleacher came to the library with the STEM Mobile from Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania to offer the youths a hands-on science experience. Bleacher’s program was a course on the use of maps and a compass. “We’re going to have some activities we’re going to do hands-on, and they’re going

Kyle Robinson, executive director of Handi*Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), has a lot on his plate. Not too long ago, the ministry purchased the land at 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, and work to receive approvals to locate camps, retreat centers, and day programs there is underway, with HVMI planning a capital fund campaign to begin in the fall. With all that looming, Robinson is well aware of the importance of maintaining the general budget. “Our golf outing is driving programs that are happening now,” explained Robinson. “Our general fund should be strong as we go into our capital campaign. We need to appropriately handle all the things God has given us.” HVMI will hold its 17th annual golf outing at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Thursday, Sept. 12. Contests will include a hole-in-one competition, closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women, straightest drive, and a putting competition. Registration and light fare will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner will follow

the round. HVMI offers recreational camps and more to people with disabilities and also includes Minds Renewed, BASIS, and REST Ministries. Plans for the land include a camp featuring a chapel/dining hall, a cabin, a pavilion, and more. Recreational features that HVMI hopes to add will include a pool, a playground, a basketball court, and playing fields with ADA-compliant paved walking paths. Currently, the ministry rents two camps to offer seven weeks of camping per summer. One camp is located in Malaga, N.J., and a second is at Camp Sankanac near Pottstown. Having its own property will mean that HVMI can hold 10 weeks of camp each summer. “Our goals are to centralize (camping) at the Akron property,” said Robinson, who added that workshops to help local individuals and churches learn the best ways to welcome people with disabilities into their organizations are also planned for the location. Robinson would also like to see the location offer retreat opportunities to bereaved parents who take part in BASIS and parents of children with disabilities, who could receive respite services. According to Robinson, the work required to obtain land development approval for the site is well underway. “We are moving forward with the review

Sometimes, a pet rescue organization does more than find forever homes for dogs and cats that have been homeless or unwanted. In the case of Vietnam veteran David Tillman, Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue was able to provide care for his dog, Dakota, until the pair could be reunited. Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg, explained that she was contacted in January by a social worker at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center about a homeless veteran and his dog, which needed help. “The veteran did not want to leave his dog, and he needed a place for his dog to stay for several months,” Bauer explained. “I formed a relationship of trust with David, and I told him that we would help house his dog so that he could go into a program with the VA for several months and get back on his feet.” Tillman, who served in the United States Navy, said that even though he was living in hotels and sometimes in his car, he was determined to keep Dakota, a 6-year-old Labrador pit bull mix. “I got him when he was nine months old from a friend of mine,” said Tillman. “I would

Dakota will eventually become a certified service dog. “I was able to go and visit him in foster care and when he was in training,” Tillman noted. In May, Tillman moved into the Whitehall Apartments in Spring City. Opened in 2017, the facility was constructed to provide permanent supportive housing for at-risk veterans in Chester County. The facility includes the newly renovated historic Whitehall Inn, as well as 48 affordable apartments for veterans. Residents of the apartments have access to support services provided by the Coatesville VA and a full-time resident services coordinator. Tillman and Dakota are now living together permanently in the Spring City apartment. The rescue will continue to support Dakota’s needs of food and veterinary care, and it is also raising funds to make necessary repairs on Tillman’s car. “Dakota is doing great, and we are very proud of David and Dakota,” Bauer said. Lucky Dawg started a GoFundMe campaign in January to fund the cost of a hotel room where Tillman could stay and to finance veterinary care for Dakota while Tillman was completing a program at the Coatesville VA before a housing spot opened up for him through the HUD-VASH program. Since Lucky Dawg does not have a physical building, it relies on volunteer foster families to care for dogs and cats until permanent housing can be found. “One of my amazing foster families stepped up and fostered Dakota for a month,” Bauer reported. In addition, the rescue arranged for Dakota to be boarded with a local trainer. “I saw that David was having trouble walking Dakota, not only from Dakota pulling, but from the neuropathy in his legs, so I reached out to Patrick Fitzgerald at Keystone K9 for training,” Bauer explained. “We got together a plan, and through money raised from the rescue and Patrick giving a discount for his training, Dakota went through

jumbo screen, and the badgeholders will be asked to stand when their person is identified. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. “That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bellringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “ We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexible. Mokros pointed out that it was all in a day’s work for first responders. “They fight fires rain or shine,” Mokros remarked. Participation in the stair climb is open to folks of all ages. Children must be accompanied by adults. There is a cost to participate. Folks may register in advance and be guaranteed to receive an event T-shirt by visit www.lancasterstairclimb.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Aug. 23. After that date, folks will have to register at the event. Credit cards will be accepted for online registration, but only cash and checks will be accepted for day-of registration. Spectators are encouraged to attend and will be admitted free of charge. music for the evening will be provided by the Horst Brothers, a local gospel and bluegrass group. Drew and Cindy plan to update attendees on the growth of their ministry since they first moved their family to Guatemala nine years ago to work with children in orphanages there. “We will tell them what is going on in Central America with children and how to help them,” said Drew. We Help Children has worked to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The Metcalfs and their three children are centered in Guatemala, and Drew travels to Honduras to help children there. A recent addition to the ministry includes connecting with a missionary family working with Belizean individuals who have hearing loss. The new ministry
will focus on pregnant teenage girls and new mothers. In Chicago, Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala, works with children in crisis through Reborn Ministries and a local school. The Metcalfs have also taken in orphaned children who need extra help or who are aging out of the orphanage and need to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence,” said Drew, who added that a 20-year-old girl who was with the family for nine months recently graduated into living and working on her own. More than half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. Drew would like to see his family utilize their abilities to help children on the border of Texas and Mexico. “The solution

Mast Family Reunion Planned By Francine Fulton
The 2019 Mast Gathering, a reunion of the Mast family that immigrated to America from Switzerland in the 1700s, will take place on Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4, at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. Highlights of the weekend will include a field trip to local sites, historic seminars, an auction and children’s activities. The event will conclude with an outdoor worship service on Sunday. Lois Ann Mast of Morgantown, who is co-chair of the event, explained that the reunion is open to all with the last name of Mast, as well as those who have Mast relatives. “You do not have to have a last name of Mast (to attend). You can be a wife of a Mast or have a grandmother who was a Mast,” she said. “There are people coming from 20 different states. They want to learn about their heritage.” The reunion is being organized
by a steering committee consisting of Masts from Morgantown, Hamburg, Ephrata and Lancaster, as well as out-of-state family members from Maryland, Ohio and South Carolina. “(Committee members) were responsible to tell their families in their areas, and it spread by word of mouth,” said Mast. “I am still getting registrations every day.” Mast, whose maiden name is Zook, organized a Zook reunion in 2016 at the same location. More than 600 Zooks attended the event, which was called the Zaugg Versammlung, which is Swiss German for Zook reunion. The Mast Gathering will begin on Aug. 2 with a field trip to historic sites where many of the early Mast immigrants first settled when they came to America. The field trip will end at a local Amish home for a traditional supper. Mast noted that the chartered buses for the field trip are filled; there is a waiting list to take part. On Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be seminars
offered at the church about Mast ancestry, as well as displays providing more information on the families and where they lived, including ship lists of each of the immigrants and their friends who traveled with them to America. There will also be a variety of children’s activities, including games, barrel train rides, horse and buggy rides and a candy drop from a ladder fire truck. There will also be a silent auction on Saturday. Among the items to be auctioned are Mast Brothers chocolate candy bars, a quilt, wall hangings, woodcrafts and baked goods. “People are bringing antique quilts from their great-great-grandparents (to donate to the auction). It’s kind of special that people want to share,” said Mast. Food will also be for sale beginning at 4 p.m., including sausage sandwiches, barbecue chicken, soft ice cream, homemade whoopie pies and homemade pies and cookies. “It will be fun for people from out of state to enjoy the food
(from this area),” Mast noted. A hymn sing will begin at 5:30 p.m. On Aug. 4, an outdoor worship service will take place at 9:30 a.m. A lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. and consist of traditional bean soup, homemade bread and jam and whoopie pies, which will be provided. “We’re putting up a big tent behind the sanctuary, which will overlook the peaceful Conestoga Valley where our ancestors came and settled,” Mast stated. “For those who have been to Switzerland, it looks likes Swiss farmland even though we do not have the Alps. They were comfortable settling here in the tri-county area when they came over in the 1700s. There is a spiritual connection there.” A donation will be collected to attend the reunion. To register in advance or for more information, readers may contact Mast at lois@masthof.com or 484-7988556. Reservations will also be accepted at the door.

Women Of Achievement Announced The March of Dimes has announced the four Chester County women that it will honor as part of its 30th annual Salute to Women of Achievement. The honorees are Maryanne Parsons, president, Partners in Outreach; Sandra L. Knapp, partner, Gawthrop Greenwood, Attorneys at Law; Dr. Karen Pinsky, chief quality officer, Chester County Hospital; and Kathryn Evans, executive director, Church Housing Corporation. They were announced at a reception on June 13 at AVE in Malvern. They are being recognized for making Chester County a better place to live and work while raising funds for the March of Dimes’ mission to improve the health of babies. The honorees will be celebrated at the Chester County Salute to Women of Achievement on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Aronimink Golf Club, 3500 St.
Davids Road, Newtown Square. Parsons will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. After decades of service to her community focused on Catholic education, health and athletic programs for children, in 2010, Parsons founded Partners in Outreach, a comprehensive community service organization that provides compassion in moments of need. In 2018, Partners in Outreach served more than 3,000 children in Chester County and surrounding areas. The literacy campaign has provided more than 25,000 books to schools and organizations in Chester County and surrounding areas since 2010. With the support of more than 300 volunteers, Partners in Outreach has provided new Easter outfits, Easter baskets, winter coats and summer camp bags that include supplies. Additionally, 70 struggling readers received one-on-one
tutoring in four Chester County elementary schools. Parsons’ goal is to expand the projects within Partners in Outreach to reach more individuals and organizations in need, particularly through its Easter outfit, summer camp pack and literacy programs. She was recognized by the March of Dimes Salute to Chester County Women of Achievement in 2010 for her work in public service. She and her husband, Leo, live in Chester Springs and are also recipients of the YMCA Service to Youth Award. She is an integrative nutrition health coach with four children and four grandchildren. Knapp will receive the Business Award. Just two years after joining the West Chester-based law firm Gawthrop Greenwood PC, Knapp became the first woman in Chester County to be elected to manage a mid- to large-size law firm, a position to which she was re-elected in
January 2018. A nationally recognized leader in transportation law, she is also a practitioner in business law, commercial transactions, finance, banking and real estate law. As the head of her law firm, Knapp is overseeing expansion of the firm’s West Chester offices to meet client demand, just a year after expansion and relocation of the firm’s Greater Wilmington office. She also focuses on the firm’s mentorship program for young lawyers, including young women in the law. Knapp is the mother of two children who were both born premature, and she and Gawthrop Greenwood PC are longtime partners of the March of Dimes. Pinsky will receive the Health Award. She joined the medical Staff of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Chester County Hospital in 1996, beginning as a pediatric hospitalist caring for children who required emergency care
