Parkesburg to host National Night Out

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual event held on the first Tuesday in August that is designed to promote a sense of neighborhood camaraderie and to enhance community relationships with local law enforcement officers.

Locally, NNO will be celebrated in Parkesburg on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg. The event, being presented by the Parkesburg Borough Police Department and the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Committee, will include children’s activities, food trucks, a dunk tank, free face painting and a display of emergency vehicles.

According to Parkesburg Police Chief Ryan Murtagh, residents will be able to meet with police officers and children will enjoy viewing the emergency vehicles.

Benefit cornhole tournament, outdoor movie planned

“Doug’s Fight Is Our Fight” is the theme of a fundraiser being planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Gap VFW by the family of Doug Arment, a 1993 graduate of Pequea Valley High School, who has esophageal cancer. The event will include a cornhole

tournament and an outdoor movie.

Event organizers include Jennette Bahn, who is Doug’s sister-in-law. She said the fundraiser is being modeled after activities that the family typically enjoys. “(Doug) loves riding his motorcycle, tending to his flower beds and garden

“We will bring a few of the police cars and the department fourwheeler so the kids can view the equipment and take photos if they want,” he said. “We are doing free police giveaways. We will give away stickers, artwork, wristbands and freeze pops.”

Last year, Murtagh took part in Parkesburg’s NNO as a police officer sergeant but was promoted to police chief in February. He now runs a department that includes

“Today is the day we officially take off our hard hats,” said Herman Bontrager to applause. Bontrager, board chair of the Clinic for Special Children and chair of the Keeping the Promise Building Hope capital campaign, was addressing the gathering at the June 20 ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house held at the new Clinic for Special Children, recently completed at 20 Community Lane, Gordonville.

Bontrager welcomed the group and immediately recalled April 4, 2023, when the organization broke ground for the new building. He also reminded the gathering of the vision and courage of Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, who founded the clinic 35 years ago. “We have served the most vulnerable among us - children and adults facing rare genetic disorders,” said Bontrager, adding, “Today children with once life-limiting disorders are growing into healthy adults and

Rangers receive recognition, plan event

The Chester County Commissioners issued a proclamation recognizing the county’s park rangers in celebration of World Ranger Day, July 31.

diverted to county parks and trails to assess conditions and help the facilities’ parks maintenance team with cleanup from a recent storm. The three rangers, led by Trzaska, connected to the meeting via Zoom to be recognized.

In addition to the proclamation, Chester County will mark World Ranger Day by illuminating the Historic Courthouse in green on the evening of Wednesday, July 31.

Chester County’s park rangers are responsible for enforcement of park rules and regulations, natural resource management, emergency medical services, and general visitor services for the more than 1.5 million visitors to the county’s seven parks and three regional trails each year. They also provide more than 150 educational and volunteer programs on topics including local history, birding, native plant installation, fishing, archery, and kayaking.

For the first time, rangers from six counties in southeastern Pennsylvania and Maryland will gather at Warwick County Park on July 31 for a morning of partnership and community outreach. The public is invited to join them from 10 a.m. to noon for Touch a Truck opportunities with a variety of ranger vehicles, a children’s scavenger hunt, pop-up archery, and disc golf.

Rangers will be available to answer questions and talk about what it takes to be a park ranger. No registration is necessary for this free program.

Doug, who works as a fabricator at HC Quality Doors in Intercourse, was diagnosed with aggressive esophageal cancer in late May. He has been married to Jodi for 27 years, and they have three children. He recently began cancer treatments to help fight the disease. “It has already been a difficult journey, but his fight is just starting,” said Bahn. She emphasized that all proceeds from the upcoming event will go to Doug’s medical bills.

Registration for the tournament will begin at 11 a.m. and play will start at noon in the grove behind the Gap VFW building. Players of all skill levels are welcome, and the top three teams will win cash prizes.

“We will have four games in a round robin (format) and double elimination after that,” explained Bahn. “Each team is guaranteed to play at least six games.” She noted that Ken Smith, owner of Berks County Cornhole, will supply the

There will be informational tables about the family and esophageal cancer at the event. “As long as (Doug) is up to it, he will be there,” Bahn added.

Sheriff’s Office posts new hires, promotions

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office hired five new deputies and promoted another to the rank of corporal.

The agency welcomed Deputy Nicholas Fernandez, recipient of the Police Academy’s Physical Conditioning Award; Deputy Angel Chimal Rodriguez, recipient of the Police Academy’s Academic Achievement Award; and Deputy Ernesto Pinda. These three deputies completed their training at the Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy and

demonstrated exceptional skills and dedication to law enforcement.

The agency also hired Deputy Brett Popiny, who transferred from Telford Borough Police Department with over a decade of experience in law enforcement, and recognized Kiri Burgos, who has been with the agency for two years, for being promoted from security operator to deputy. Kelly McGonigal, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for four years, has been promoted from deputy to

corporal. These promotions reflect the officers’ dedication and contributions to the mission and vision of the Sheriff’s Office.

Since the new administration took office, it has hired 20 new staff members. The office has also implemented an aggressive recruitment and retention plan with the goal of attracting the best deputies in the county as well as expanding its digital presence to recruit via social media so it can reach a broader and more diverse pool of candidates.

Sheriff Kevin Dykes (far left) and Chief Deputy Jason Suydam (far right) recognized the promotions of Kiri Burgos (center) and Kelly McGonigal (not pictured) and welcomed new department members (from second from left) Angel Chimal Rodriguez, Ernesto Pinda, Nicholas Ferandez, and Brett Popiny.

new treatments are on the horizon. This building represents the clinic’s promise to care for children as they age and seek life-giving therapies.”

The Rodriguez family from New York spoke next, with Alicia, mother of Eric and wife of Walter, telling the story of how the family was overwhelmed by Eric’s diagnosis of glutaric acidemia, when he was born at 31 weeks of gestation. Walter searched the internet for answers, and when he discovered the clinic in Lancaster County, the family drove the four hours to meet staff members. “We thought the GPS had made

a mistake,” noted Alicia of the final portion of the trip when the car traveled through a farm field and a cluster of trees. “From the moment we walked in, we felt hope,” she stated, noting that Eric, who is now 5, is in good health and “runs us ragged.” “He is our daily reminder that God is gracious and good,” she said. “The clinic manifests hope when there isn’t any.” Clinic executive director Adam Heaps spoke prior to the ribbon cutting. “The vision for this project was conceived a number of years ago when the need for the clinic’s innovative and essential services was increasing while the walls of clinic were not,” he said. Heaps defined the work of the organization in a number of ways, noting that the office serves children and adults with genetic disorders primarily from the Plain community. “We walk alongside families that have to make important decisions relating to some of the most daunting medical challenges,” he said. Heaps noted that staff members endeavor to create a comforting and inspiring environment for every family that walks through the clinic’s doors, and he quoted a donor who recently prayed for the clinic, saying, “The clinic is a place where love and know-how

come together.” “To me, at the end of the day, the clinic combines love and knowledge to create good,” Heaps added.

Celebratin’ bacon

When Dena Krebs, marketing coordinator with Stoltzfus Meats, was looking for a way to celebrate the business’s 70th anniversary, she visited a festival in a neighboring town devoted to a special Pennsylvania treat made with chocolate and cream.

“It got me thinking about the community aspect of it, and I thought, ‘Why don’t we do something like that here, but base it on bacon?’” she stated.

The result of that research is the first Baconfest, which will be held in Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A variety of activities are planned, including demonstrations, a bounce house, yard games, and food trucks offering bacon-themed food items for purchase.

The event will kick off with the Bakin’ with Bacon entry drop-off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “Jere Gish from WGAL will be one of the judges,” said Krebs of the competition, which is open to any baker and any baked

good as long as bacon is an ingredient. The contest winner will be announced at 2:45 p.m.

At 10:15 a.m., an Intercourse Library representative will read “Don’t Forget the Bacon” to children and adults. “It’s a giant picture book,” noted Krebs.

Live entertainment at the event will include the DKers juggling at 10:45 a.m. and the one-man-band talents of Nick DiSanto at 11:30 a.m. WJTL will begin a remote broadcast at 1 p.m. Big Boy Brass will perform at 4:30 p.m.

Demonstrations will begin at 1 p.m. Myron Stoltzfus, an owner of Stoltzfus Meats, and his son, Zach, will bring a portable smoker to the venue. “(They) will explain the process of smoking bacon, taking it out, and carving it,” said Krebs, who added that samples will be available.

Tony Page, who works in product development for Stoltzfus, will demonstrate cooking Bacon-Wrapped Kielbasa Bombs from 2 to 2:30 p.m. “He’ll be giving away samples to those who come to watch,” shared Krebs.

A griller eating competition will be held at 3 p.m. Krebs explained that a griller is a sausage, but shaped like a hot dog. “That will be a lot of fun,” said Krebs, who noted the contest was inspired by the company’s participating in scrapple-eating competitions held at the Ephrata Fair. “We are looking for contestants,” she noted, adding that a free T-shirt will be given to each entrant.

Food trucks located at the event will sell items ranging from pizza, chicken sandwiches, and burgers to ice cream. Each food truck will support a nonprofit organization with an initial deposit and a portion of sales. Nonprofits that will be represented include the Clinic for Special Children, Intercourse Fire Company, The Factory Ministries, the 4-H Swine Club, the

senior categories will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool Contest in Scottsdale, Ariz., in January 2025. The adult winner will submit his or her ensemble, along with a video of the contestant wearing the outfit, for judging at the national level, and one winner will be selected to attend the national contest.

12 police officers. “Last year, (NNO) was amazing. We hope to build on that,” he added.

Also on hand during NNO in Parkesburg will be members of the Keystone Valley Fire Department, who will also display vehicles and apparatus.

As it did last year, the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Committee will present an obstacle course. “The obstacle course is for little kids, big kids and adults,” explained committee member April Brade. “We time it, so some people go through and try to beat their time. That was a lot of fun for everybody last year.”

Murtagh said that NNO is a way for the community to get to know first responders and police officers. “It strengthens community relations,” he said, noting that in the past, the department has held question-and-answer

presentations at schools in the Octorara Area School District regarding the law and social topics. “We also enjoy our relationship with The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center.”

Both Brade and Murtagh encourage the community to attend NNO. Most events are free, with the exception of purchasing food. There will also be a small donation for the dunk tank.

“Last year, it was a big success, and we are looking to redo it,” said Brade. “We encourage children and young adults to meet the first responders and the police department and strike up a good rapport.”

Local storytellers Josef Berthold and Becky Hess will relate short-form anecdotes from their lives.

Local talent leads township

When Chris Slaymaker of Gap applied for the position of Leacock Township manager, the board of supervisors members who interviewed him saw leadership qualities, but they also saw something they were specifically seeking. “We wanted someone who understands the area,” said Frank Howe, retiring secretary and treasurer for the township and a member of the board for nearly 40 years. “It’s hard to teach the culture.”

Slaymaker grew up in the area, and he attended Pequea Valley schools, graduating from Pequea Valley High School and immediately going to work for Lancaster County-Wide Communications, the county’s 911 call center. Slaymaker worked his way up to supervisor at the call center, taking part in leadership training and earning certifications along the way. “I can manage stress and make decisions under pressure,” he noted. Moving to the township position

gives Slaymaker a chance to work closer to home and utilize the skills he has developed over 21 years. “I wanted a job where I could impact my local community more,” he said. “I wanted to help make decisions that are impactful to the region, and having the opportunity to interact with local people was a big plus for me,” explained Slaymaker, who told the board during his interview, “I would love to blend the culture and heritage with new horizons. Changes will happen, but trying to manage that change with our local heritage and history in mind (is important).”

For Howe, bringing in a township manager has given him the chance to retire gradually. When Slaymaker started at the office in late April, Howe took him into the community to meet area leaders. Since then, Howe has been working with him a few days a week and teaching budget fine points and other essential concepts as those tasks arise. Howe’s long career with the

township has given him the experience needed to train the new manager. Howe’s employment with the township began when he worked with contractors on the construction of the Leacock Township building at 3545 W. Newport Road, Ronks, in 1996. He also oversaw the arrival of the original sewer system implementation and the expansion of the system later on, working with a consultant. The installation of a water system and the development of the park system occurred under Howe’s watch. “When I came here, there was one park with a pavilion and a ballfield owned by the Intercourse Civic Association, which had agreed to let the Intercourse Lions Club run it,” recalled Howe, who worked with the Civic Association to turn the park over to the township. Howe designed and oversaw the building of the Intercourse Community Park, which was dedicated in 2004. “That was my big thing. I’m proud of that park. It’s a beautiful place,” said Howe.

Looking ahead, Slaymaker knows that in this position, he will have to grapple with change, which is not always popular with community members. He is thankful for Howe’s continued presence when considering the future of the area. “You do it for the community and what makes it better to live here,” said Howe of the position. More information about the township is available at www.leacocktwp.com.
