Bookworms Invited To Frolic By Ann Mead Ash
When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will
take place at LMHS, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18. The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon Weaver-Kreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion, history and politics,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that he had counted 113 boxes of children’s books. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also See Bookworm Frolic pg 5

Paradise Bible Fellowship Schedules Block Party

Tom and Shirley Herr make a practice of opening their farm each summer for a visitor from New York City. For the third year, Shyan McIntosh of the Queens area of New York has come to the Herrs’ Oxford farm for a weeklong visit through the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Shyan, 11, arrived on July 13 and stayed with the Herr family through July 20. She fit right in with the family, which includes sons Philip and Thomas Jr. and daughters Gracie and Marybeth. “We wanted to have a girl (visit) because the girls were at home (to) play See Fresh Air Fund pg 3
In the summer of 1953, when a group of Paradise residents purchased the former Episcopal church at 3092 Lincoln Highway East, located at the corner of Route 30 and Singer Avenue in Paradise, the new congregation began holding tent meetings in the parking lot. Fast forward more than 60 years, and Paradise Bible Fellowship Church is still inviting members of the community to connect in the church parking lot, but this time the event is the church’s annual block party. The 2018 Paradise Bible Fellowship
Shyan McIntosh (left) from Queens, New York City, spent a week visiting the Herr family of Oxford, including (continuing from left) Gracie, Marybeth, Shirley and Tom. Her trip was arranged through the Fresh Air Fund, a program that connects city children with suburban and rural families.

In past years, she has joined the Herr daughters in the church youth group and taken part in family parties. Last year, one of the most memorable moments for Shyan was getting to watch the birth of a calf that was then named after her. Her favorite thing to do, however, was to enjoy the swing on the family’s property and relax. She also is very interested in gardening and growing flowers. When she arrived at the Herrs’ the first time, Shyan discovered that farms were not quite what she expected. “I thought it was See Fresh Air pg 6

with Shyan,” Shirley said, noting that that Philip and Thomas Jr., who are now ages 18 and 17, respectively, were away working most of the day. The three girls are close in age, and they have developed a deep friendship over the years. During Shyan’s visit, they rode horses, played board games, made craft projects, ate pizza and enjoyed a dairy’s company picnic, which included a fireworks display. Shyan attended church with the Herrs at Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church, and she shared in some of the chores around the dairy farm.

Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org.

According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to

Fresh Air from pg 3 animals in every pen outside; it turned out to be different,” she said, adding that she would like to continue to visit through the program each summer until she reaches the age limit at 18. The connection between Shyan and the Herrs has become a strong one that lasts beyond the week of her visit. The girls stay in touch by talking on the phone and writing letters throughout the year. Shirley found out about the program through a Community Courier story three years ago. “I remembered my grandparents (hosted a child). This is the perfect idea to us,” she said. She would like to encourage other families to host children through the program. “We get the blessing; we have a really fun time. We see where we live through her eyes,” Shirley said. “I would highly recommend it to families. It just broadens your world.” “We’re happy to have her here for a week,” Tom added. “It’s a great opportunity for us to invest in the life of one child, one week out of the year.” According to www.freshair.org, the Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profit agency that has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Each summer, thousands of children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. For more information about the Fresh Air Fund, readers may visit the website.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman and Beau Crowding, deputy director of fire services for the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, were both recognized by the Octorara Area Homeland Security and Protective Services Academy for their support of the Octorara School District program. They were each presented with official academy shields. Earlier this year, Dinniman secured $50,000 in state grant funding for the academy to purchase specialty training equipment and professional gear. The program allows high school students to get a head start on careers in firefighting, emergency response, and law enforcement. Young people under the age of 18 can earn firefighter certification in preparation for joining a fire department on their 18th birthday. The Octorara Area Homeland Security and Protective Services Academy is a three-year career and technical education program offered to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The academy has partnered with the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus (CCPSTC) to offer an opportunity for students interested in careers in firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical services. The academy consists of two half-day programs at the CCPSTC and student academic instruction at their sending district’s high school. The academy is housed at the CCPSTC to provide students with the latest technology and equipment available while offering them the opportunity to interact with firefighters,
