own 2nd Lt. McKayla Mickel, who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy on June 1, was recently recognized for her accomplishments. Atglen Borough Mayor Darren Hodorovich presented Mickel with a certificate for her accomplishments as she begins her military career.
Mickel is a 2019 graduate of Octorara Junior-Senior High School, where she was on the honor roll and was a multi-sport athlete for four years. She played soccer and basketball and also competed in shot put and javelin.
“I always knew I wanted to go into the military from the time I was pretty young,” said Mickel.
After touring and then ruling out the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., Mickel focused on attending the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. “You have to get an appointment to apply from a Congressman or woman or a senator; without that, you can’t even get in the door,” Mickel explained. “They only have a certain amount of slots to give. It’s very selective. They only admit (about) 1,200 applicants each year.”
At the academy, Mickel majored in behavioral science and minored in Spanish. She noted that attending a military institution provides a very different experience than attending a traditional college.
“In military college, there are three pillars - academics, military and athletics. You have to be proficient in all of these,” she stated. “You have to go through basic training for six weeks before you get into the cadet wing.”
She said that her first year at the academy was particularly demanding.
“In freshman year, you can’t wear civilian clothing, you can’t be friends with upperclassmen and you can only call people by their last names,” she said. “There is also intense physical
training and military training.” She said that the pandemic made the experience even more challenging.
“COVID hit and changed the experience so much. That was a tough time for all of us,” she recalled. “We had to stay in our room, had to do

Cochranville church to present Music Fest
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The community is invited to enjoy an evening of music at Cochranville United Methodist Church’s Music Fest, set for Sunday, Aug. 13, at 3 p.m. The event will take place outdoors in the church parking lot. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs for seating. Featured will be the Rockdale Boys from Delaware County, which will perform bluegrass and gospel music. “They have been playing together for 20 years,” noted pastor Jimmy Montgomery. “They play at
Longwood Gardens, at Delaware County’s Summer Fest at Rose Tree Park and at churches and camp meetings.”
“Our music is bluegrass and acoustic, mostly gospel since we’re playing at the church,” noted band member Debbie Durant, who plays the bass and is a vocalist. “We have four lead singers and sing a lot of harmonies. We have fun on stage, too.”
Montgomery’s granddaughter, singer Jamie Marie, will be the other featured performer. She will highlight songs from the 1940s, See Music Fest pg 6

Program to assist in transporting people to court
The Chester County Department of Adult Probation, Parole & Pretrial Services is partnering with the nonprofit Danny’s Ride in a pilot program that will provide transportation services for justice-involved individuals who must attend problem-solving court appointments.
The purpose of Danny’s Ride is to overcome the transportation challenge faced by those who must attend Chester County Drug Court, Recovery Court, Mental Health Court or Veterans Court. One of the most significant issues for justice-involved individuals - especially in Chester County - is transportation to court-mandated appointments that are essential to recovery.
Danny’s Ride was started in 2020 by Nancy Knoebel to honor her son Danny Teichman, who died in 2016 after taking kratom to manage withdrawal symptoms. The nonprofit was founded as a form of non-emergency medical transportation that will serve as the infrastructure for ride scheduling through Uber Health and Lyft Concierge.

ground to a halt,” said Twila, noting that a session with limited attendance was offered in 2021. “We are back and ready for a fresh start. It’s the same curriculum, but it has been updated.”
The nondenominational program features Christ-centered, biblical teaching that focuses on grief topics associated with the death of loved one. At each of the GriefShare sessions, which are designed for people age 15 and older, attendees watch a video that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. “The group will then discuss the video together,” said Twila.
The topic for the opening meeting on Aug. 15 will be “Is This Normal?” In this session, attendees will be introduced to the GriefShare program. The session will also explain what living with grief is like, why people should not be ashamed of their grief and why they should not rush through the healing process.
Upcoming sessions will include Aug. 22, “Your Grief Journey”; Aug. 29, “Loneliness and Sadness”; and Sept.
SUNSET MOBILITY, LLC
5, “Self-Care.”
GriefShare is for those who have experienced a recent loss, as well as those who have been grieving for years.
Twila noted that some people repeat the entire course or just the sessions that deal with a particular topic. Also, people grieving a recent loss are welcome to attend the program again after some time has passed.
She pointed out that at times, friendships continue outside of the meetings. “Sometimes (participants) form their own support group within the group,” Twila noted.
GriefShare attendees should enter through the church’s main door and follow the signs to the meeting room. Child care will not be available.
For more information about the GriefShare session at Gateway Church or to register, visit www.griefshare .org/groups/170824. Walkins will also be welcome. More information about the GriefShare program is available at www.griefshare.org.

Strategies to protect children’s vision
Parents recognize that there is no aspect of children’s health that can be taken for granted. Common colds can appear
overnight, and injuries on the playground can occur in the blink of an eye. Such issues may be hard to see coming, but the
risk for colds, playground injuries and other health-related conditions, including childhood vision problems, can be mitigated with various preventive measures.
Vision issues that affect children can lead to a host of unwanted outcomes, including physical injuries and decreased academic performance. Although children may ultimately need vision problems to be corrected with the help of an eye doctor, the following are some steps parents can take to protect their children’s vision over the long haul.
Please
Schedule routine eye exams. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) noted that children’s vision can be screened by various medical professionals, including eye doctors but also pediatricians, family physicians or other properly trained health care providers. The AAO recommends children at all age levels receive eye examinations. Newborns will need eye exams so doctors can check for various indicators of eye health, while a second eye exam conducted during a well visit before the child’s first birthday can confirm healthy eye alignment and movement. Exam intervals can be discussed with a physician as children age, but it is important that children receive routine eye exams to confirm their vision is healthy and to identify any issues that could be compromising their vision.
Feed children a healthy diet. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which have the vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain healthy vision.
Monitor screen time. The CDC noted that excessive screen time can exacerbate uncorrected vision problems. Daily screen time limits can help protect children’s vision, and parents should ensure that children take frequent breaks when using digital devices. Frequent breaks from additional activities like reading, writing and drawing also can protect children’s vision.
Encourage children to spend time outdoors. Access and exposure to nature pays a host of health-related dividends, including some linked to eye health. The CDC noted that going outdoors affords children’s eyes the opportunity to look at distant objects, which can provide a respite from the eye strain and fatigue that can develop when looking at screens or books.

Vision frompg 7
Provide protective eyewear, including sunglasses. Exposure to UV rays from the sun can harm children’s eyes, so kids should wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection when spending time outside. The CDC also urged children to wear protective eyewear when engaging in activities such as sports that can increase their risk for eye injury and vision loss.
Taking steps to protect longterm vision is a vital component of childhood preventive health care.

Neither my mother nor my father knew anything about farming when they bought a working farm in 1936. They made friends with the neighboring Italian truck farmers who took a delight in teaching both of them the intricate art of growing vegetables. A neighbor farmer also showed them how to first buy a cow, then care for it and milk it. Many of these activities fell to

In the first spring, the neighbor showed Pop how to prepare the fields with his second-hand tractor. (The neighbors still used a horse.) time World War II began, she had mastered cooking on the wood stove so well that we were taking baked goods to the market each Saturday, along with dressed chickens. In the late 1930s, most of the surrounding farms did not have electricity. My father, a licensed electrician, was contracted with Pennsylvania Gov. Gifford Pinchot’s electrification program to begin to remedy this. Pinchot’s administration had set up a work program that employed outof-work young men for three month stints to do muchneeded public services. This program was so successful that President Franklin D. Roosevelt took notice and worked with Pinchot to frame a new program on the same lines, first in New York, then nationally. Thus was formed the Works Progress Administration (WPA). My father had worked with the Pinchot Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program in Chester County, planting trees in the Malvern area. The CCC eventually became a national program also.
During World War II, from 1941 to 1945, a blackout was imposed every night, and wardens were appointed to check around the neighborhood for those who did not comply with the order. There was a real fear of German bombing such as England was having every night. My father was a warden, doing random drives about the countryside looking for those who used flashlights or lanterns to go to the outhouse or barn. Even cigarettes were considered potential target material.
Our house, with its sixover-six two-century-old windows, was soon outfitted with tar paper “shades” that could be turned up during the day and dropped at night. Then, heavy curtains were drawn across the whole window well for total darkness. The daily sun made the tar paper emit a very distinctive odor, which even in 2023, I can still remember.
Regrettably, when the peace treaty was finally signed, my father sold the farm, and we moved back to suburban Philadelphia.
