It’s Carnival Time In Cochranville! BY FRANCINE FULTON
he Cochranville Carnival, offering food, games, rides, live music and prizes, is being presented again this year in the lot next to the firehouse, 3135 Limestone Road, Cochranville. The carnival opened on Aug. 2 and will run through Saturday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 10 p.m. each day. Multiple games with prizes will be offered throughout the carnival grounds, and a wide variety of rides will be provided by Houghton Enterprises, a Cochranville-based business. The carnival kitchen will serve chicken salad sandwiches and chicken corn soup and has added roast beef and barbecue pulled pork sandwiches to the menu this year. Visitors may also play bingo under a large canopy. “It’s (a) huge event,” said fire company member Wanda Lapp, who also volunteers at the carnival. “We have people (attend) from out of state, including Maryland and Delaware. People come every year just for the chicken salad or the chicken corn soup to take home with them. And the children love the rides.”
This is the first year we are (offering) cash because right now people need the money.” While the carnival has grown and changed since it first took place in 1946, Lapp said that the focus of providing family fun remains the same. “Growing up, (people) couldn’t wait for the Cochranville Carnival,” she said. “We are one of the last carnivals still in the area that is still up and running. Cochranville Fire Company has such strong community support. We have a lot of community (members) come out and work the stands.” Proceeds will benefit the Cochranville Fire Company, an allvolunteer organization that provides fire protection for the village of Cochranville and the surrounding communities. Admission to the carnival is free. Octorara Football Club members will help with parking, which will be by donation. For more information about the carnival, visit www.face book.com/cochranvillefire or www.facebook.com/CFCCarnival. In the event of inclement weather, carnival cancellation information will be posted on the Facebook pages.

Marcus, age 8, is a pianist. He reported that his favorite song to play is the “William Tell Overture.” Lucas explained that when the family discussed the idea of holding a concert to raise funds for SWAN, he responded, “Why not? It sounds like fun.” The fundraiser grew out of Anu’s interest in keeping her sons learning and productive during the months when there is no school. “My mom came up with the idea of doing a project each summer,” explained Noah, who added that he and his brothers interviewed Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN in preparation for the project. “Before (undertaking this project), we knew (SWAN) helped traumatized kids in Lancaster County by teaching them music,” said Noah. “We learned that their parents might be in prison,” he added, noting that Vuolo the brothers call her “Miss Diana” - shared situations that helped them better understand the mission of SWAN. SWAN offers one-hour after-school music programs for students ages 6 to 18. Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which gives children 120 hours of instruction. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. Readers who would like to know more about SWAN may visit https://swan4kids.org.

Lucas, who is 12, plays the piano, violin, ukulele, and guitar. He will play a hymn, and he will play the guitar to accompany Anu, Marcus, and Liesl when they sing “Do-Re-Mi” from “The Sound of Music.”
5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11. A mix of music, including gospel tunes, will be played on a variety of instruments. Admission will be charged, and a meal, including a sub sandwich from Pasquale’s, chips, and a beverage, will be offered for a nominal cost. When three musical brothers are assigned a summer project, it is only natural that they would decide to hold a concert. In the case of Noah, Lucas, and Marcus Unruh, who live in the Conestoga Valley School District, that concert will benefit SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), which offers free music lessons to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students affected by parental incarceration. The Unruh brothers will display their musical talents with a little help from their mother, Anu, and younger sister, Liesl, when they hold a fundraiser for SWAN to “give music” and “empower dreams,” according to the event flyer, at Gospel of Grace Community Church, 45 N. The event is held several times a year as a way to properly dispose of flags that are no longer serviceable. Individuals who wish to retire a flag are welcome to arrange drop-off by emailing Christine Zink, a member of the troop’s parent committee, at zink.scouts@gmail.com. Flags can also be dropped off during a Scout meeting. The troop also held a Court of Honor in June to recognize all the merit badges and ranks that the Scouts had earned over the preceding several months. A highlight of the event was having first-year Scouts - those who had crossed over from a local Cub Scout Pack - earn their Scout Rank, which is the first rank in Boy Scouts. Subsequent ranks are Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star Life and Eagle. Recent summer activities have included attending Camp Rodney in North East, Md.; camping in Staten Island, N.Y.; beach camping at Cape Henlopen, Del.; and hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Troop members, accompanied by adult leaders, also took part in a day trip to New York City, where they visited the National September 11 Memorial, among other sites. During summer camp experiences, troop members completed 68 merit badges and were awarded an Honor Troop streamer, which will be displayed on the troop’s flag. During their outing at Camp Rodney, troop members endured a severe summer storm. “The troop had an extremely eventful summer camp at Camp Rodney,” Zink reported. “A fast moving storm ripped through the camp and a lot of damage was done. The kids had to spend the night in the dining hall, and many trees fell throughout the camp. The Scouts in Troop 20 were all unharmed,
and camp-wide there were only minor injuries.” Upcoming events include attending high adventure Camp Algonquin in Canada, where the Scouts will take part in a canoe trip. “The troop regularly participates in other service activities in the community like Adopta-Highway, cemetery cleanups and more,” Zink noted. “The troop also engages in high adventure trips each summer and monthly trips that the Scouts decide on.” Boys interested in joining Atglen Scout Troop 20 are welcome to visit during any regular meeting. Meetings are held at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. For special activities, the troop will meet at Jim Landis Woodland Preserve, 610 Zion Hill Road, Atglen.

“There is something here for everybody on Wednesday nights,” said Heather Ensslen, who grew up attending Awana at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) and now serves as one of the coordinators of the program. Ensslen noted that Awana clubs are available for children from age 2 through sixth grade, and a youth group and adult prayer meeting are also offered on Wednesday evenings from September through May. Awana will kick off at CMBC, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m., with a program by Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. The interactive and educational animal show will feature live snakes, as well as lizards and turtles. Awana clubs will meet from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. weekly from Wednesday, Sept. 7, through Wednesday, May 10. Awana clubs are divided into four age groups. The group for 2-year-olds is called Puggles. due to the pandemic. “We’ve been waiting three years for this,” said Perella. “Last year, we traveled down there, and they canceled it because there was not enough participants.” In addition to the competition, the youths enjoyed activities during Worlds, including free educational sessions with competition judges, swimming at the hotel’s pool and biking. “They had a gymnasts’ party and a T-shirt swap with a team from England,” said Krissy Buchanan, whose daughter Kiara is the only one on the team who represents Twin Valley. “They had practices to check out the equipment just like at the Olympics because every (venue) is different.” Perella said that the teammates form strong friendships throughout the competition season. “They compete against their own teammates in the individual events. Even though they compete against each other, they still have bonding and are very supportive of each other,” she said. into an animal theme that will be featured regularly throughout the two semesters of the program. “One night each month will be Critter Card night, and (club members) will have trading cards they can collect,” she said. “We will talk about a couple different animals and what we can learn about the Bible and God by studying the animals.” She added that when attendees amass five Critter Cards, they can adopt a stuffed animal. Along with the animal theme nights, Ensslen said some special theme nights are planned based on activities that have proven popular in the past. “Last year, we did a drive-in movie night,” said Ensslen, who explained that club members decorated cardboard boxes to look like cars and then brought them to (Awana) to sit in while watching a movie on an inflatable screen in the gym. Another theme night is neon night, which involves neon clothing and glow items. “We put black lights in the gym, and we play games,” explained Ensslen, who also described a weekend event that involves adults as well as children. “We do a Grand Prix, which is a Saturday family event in February,” she said, explaining that the pinewood derby offers racing for both children and adults. “It gets a little bit competitive,” she said. Readers who would like more information on the Awana kickoff event may visit https://calvarymonument.org/ ministries/children.

People who find spotted lanternflies on their property can reduce the population and the insect’s impact by trapping and squishing them. One option is to create a circle trap. Penn State Extension’s website includes instructions for making a circle trap using easily obtainable items such as plastic milk jugs, duct tape, screen wire, twine, hot glue, and gallon-size food-storage bags. Traps can also be purchased through agriculture and nursery supply stores. To make a circle trap, visit https://extension.psu.edu and search for “New Style Spotted Lanternfly Circle Trap.”

The trail runs along the course of the old Lancaster, Oxford & Southern Railroad, which cut through the property and led to Pilgrim’s Path - named for its role as part of the Underground Railroad. The property is maintained by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS), located directly across Robert Fulton Highway. “The railroad changed the area forever,” said SLCHS president Stan White. “It allowed merchants and farmers to transport goods and travel to surrounding areas and even Philadelphia.” White, who has been with the organization for 18 years, was initially drawn to Lancaster County by the many railroads and historical sites. Since joining the historical society, he has researched and written several books with SLCHS treasurer Mike Roth and dedicated hours to archiving and researching material historically relevant to the area. “We do a lot of our own research, but a vast amount of information is brought in by local families that have resided here for generations,” White said. “People bring in old pho-

Sites throughout Lancaster County attest to the area’s rich and deeply rooted history, from establishments that have operated for over a century to sites that have played a significant role in many historical events. Just south of Quarryville lies one such landmark: the Robert Fulton Birthplace, located at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. Built in 1750 by James Gillespie, the building initially served as a small tavern on his 545-acre plantation. It fell under the ownership of Robert Fulton’s father in 1764; Robert, the future famed inventor and artist, was born upstairs above the tavern in November 1765 and likely resided there until 1770. Although the structure has endured a great deal of restoration over the years, visitors can explore the inside of the building, including a bounty of artifacts, paintings and home furnishings indicative of what life was like during Fulton’s time. Several educational videos on Fulton’s life and accomplishments, as well as the history of the property, are also made available to curious guests. Adjacent to the birthplace is the L, O & S Nature and Rail

United Way of Chester County will invest $250,000 over a three-year period to expand Friends Association’s Eviction Prevention Court Program (EPC Program) countywide. The program provides a combination of free legal representation, financial assistance, and social service support to tenants who appear before the court for an eviction filing. The goal is to avoid the immediate and downstream consequences of eviction for tenants and the significant financial costs to landlords, taxpayers, and the community.
Friends Association launched its EPC Program in the Downingtown Magisterial District Court in September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on this program’s success, in January 2021, Friends Association expanded its efforts to the two Magisterial District Courts serving the Coatesville area. Zook’s Fabrics Has New Owners Leo and Carol Maynard are the new owners of Zook’s Fabrics and Total Quilting Solutions, located at 3535 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse. Getting closer to retirement, they found that working on the completion and finishing of quilt tops was relaxing compared to the stress of the corporate world. Zook’s carries quilting fabrics, supplies and longarm services and offers beginner, intermediate and advanced sewing classes. The shop also features a Bernina Q-24 long arm sewing machine to help customers after finishing the stitching of their quilt top. The sewing machine can efficiently sew the final three layers together. This service can save a customer six to nine months of additional labor in the last stage of competing the quilt. For more information, call 717-768-8153, visit www.zooksfabric.com or search for “Zook’s Fabrics” on Facebook or @zooksfabric on Instagram.

Mental Health Surveys Posted Chester County has joined with communities across the nation, introducing 988 as the direct phone connection support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress. Chester County sees the implementation of the new 988 call option as a first step toward a transformed crisis care system and is seeking feedback through two online surveys to better inform the county’s crisis care system. The surveys include a Youth Mental Health Survey for parents/guardians, teachers, counselors, health professionals, and young people and an Adult Mental Health Survey for individuals who recently experienced the mental health crisis response system, as well as members of law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, homeless service providers, health professionals, and others. The Adult and Youth Mental Health surveys are brief, anonymous, and available at www.chesco.org/mhidd. Once the survey results are concluded, they will be shared with a planning committee that includes representatives from the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, NAMI, Chester County first responder organizations, West Chester University, Main Line Health, and Chester County’s Departments of Health, Human Services, Community Development, Mental Health/IDD, Probation Services, and Drug & Alcohol Services. The district attorney and CEOs of Chester County Hospital, Alliance for Health Equity, Phoenixville Community Health Foundation, and Chester County Intermediate Unit are also part of the planning committee, as well as peer recovery specialists and people with personal experience with the county’s current mental health system.
