Fresh2You Mobile Market Serves All By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Residents of Chester County are able to enjoy garden-fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables through the Fresh2You Mobile Market, operated by the Chester County Food Bank. The Mobile Market offers a wide selection of produce, including kale, strawberries, tomatoes, cauliflower, collards, radishes, turnips and cucumbers, as well as locally sourced eggs and honey. Items sold at the Mobile Market are grown locally. “Most of what we sell is grown by us at the food bank. We have an agriculture department with farmers on staff that grow most of this food for us,” said Alex Steinmetz, Fresh2You assistant manager. “Anything else they’re not growing, we’re p u r chasing from local farmers or distributors, so everything’s coming local from the area.” The Mobile Market is open to everyone
regardless of income. All forms of payment, including debit cards, cash, SNAP/EBT (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/electronic benefits transfer) cards and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) vouchers, are accepted. Customers at the Mobile Market receive matching dollars in the form of Veggie Bucks that can be used for additional fruit and vegetables when shopping with SNAP/EBT. Among the workers at the Mobile Market are Spanish speakers who are available to help customers. In addition to the fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices are offered. There are also dried beans that are not locally grown but can easily be used with the fresh produce. There are recipes available that help provide shoppers with new meal ideas, along with recipe bundles that provide the ingredients to make that week’s featured dish. See Fresh2You pg 4
Gaga Court Built At The POINT Youth Center Fundraiser To Feature Tim Tebow By Francine Fulton
The Parkesburg POINT youth center now has a new gaga ball court thanks to the efforts of the Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown. A group of 10 volunteers constructed the octagon-shaped court at The POINT on Aug. 10. The court will
be used by youths who visit the center to play gaga, which is known as a gentler form of dodgeball. The object of the game is for players to hit the lightweight or foam ball using just their hands at or below the other opponents’ knees to eliminate them from the pit. The last one left is the winner. See The POINT pg 5
Among those who helped construct a gaga ball court at The Parkesburg POINT youth center on Aug. 10 were (from left) Rotary Club of ThorndaleDowningtown members Bernie Orglmeister, Bob Rigg, Autumn Katzenmoyer, Evelyn Samuels, Bill Keen and Elva Wright; Bud Herman, facilities director at The POINT; Erin Moffa, the Rotary Club’s scholarship winner; and (not pictured) Jack Hines and Kenny Holman.
Assistant manager Alex Steinmetz welcomes the community to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables at the Fresh2You Mobile Market operated by the Chester County Food Bank. The Mobile Market is available at sites throughout Chester County.
New Pastor Invites Public To Community Fun Day By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church recently welcomed a new pastor, Dr. Tracy Brown, who accepted the position in June. Brown had preached at the church several Sundays while the church was without a pastor over the last year. At that time, he was completing his doctoral degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary. After his experience with the church, he applied for the position as pastor and was selected by the congregation. Brown, originally from Philadelphia, is a minister’s son, with several other ministers in his immediate family. He attended the University of Delaware, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and physical training. Instead of pursuing a career in See New Pastor pg 3
Tracy Brown is the new pastor of Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church in Christiana. The church will hold a Community Fun Day on Aug. 24 with activities for people of all ages.

The Chesmont Astronomical Society (CAS) will present StarFest 2019 on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. During the 20th annual event, the community will be able to view the night sky through powerful telescopes owned by CAS members. Also featured will be educational activities for children, along with guest speakers and door prizes. Admission and parking will be free, but donations will be accepted. StarFest will open at 5:30 p.m. for solar observing and telescope setup. A Kids’ Corner featuring educational activities will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. Opening remarks will be offered by Josh Wright, president of CAS, at 7 p.m. He will talk about the evening’s events, provide a short history of CAS and StarFest and discuss the work of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Lighting Council. Speaker presentations will take place from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. “You Are Here,” an overview of the size and scale of the universe and how amateur astronomers view the objects within it, will be presented by longtime CAS member Robert Cordivari at 7:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be James Aguirre, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who will discuss how radio waves are used to study the universe. His talk will begin at 8:15 p.m. All attendees will be given free tickets to win door prizes, which will be given out throughout the evening. The grand prize of a high-powered telescope will be awarded at approximately 9:15 p.m. Public stargazing will begin at 9:30 p.m. “The highlight of the evening will be 10 Object Row; 10 of our members’ telescopes will be focused on a different deep-sky object,” said Cordivari, who is event co-chair along with Mary Howe. “You can see anything from a planet and a star cluster to a globular cluster, a double star and a supernova remnant. The public can go down the row and see the objects visible through amateur telescopes. It’s a really good way for the public to get a diverse view of the objects we look at all the time.” CAS is a nonprofit amateur astronomy club devoted to raising awareness of astronomy and to educating the general public about light pollution and preserving the night sky. CAS meets monthly on the Sunday nearest the full moon starting at 7 p.m. at the Crow’s Nest Preserve in Elverson. Specific meeting dates are listed at www.chesmont astro.org.

recalled. “A moment when I was at one of the lowest points in my life was one of the greatest points in my life as well, because that was the beginning of me starting the ministry of (using) my pain to help others in their pain and in their joys as well.” Brown studied at Lancaster Bible College for his Master of Arts in pastoral studies and earned his Master of Divinity at Eastern Mennonite Seminary in 2015. “I had been - for many years - pastor of a church plant in Lancaster Mennonite Council in Lancaster city, Assured Hope Community Church,” he noted. Helping Brown is his wife, Barbara. “She’s been through a lot of training as well
to be a good partner with me in ministry. She has a passion for teaching,” Brown said. Brown characterizes his pastoral style as Bible-based. “I believe in meeting people where they’re at and getting to know them,” Brown said. “We’re a traditional church with a contemporary flair. I try to be exciting, not boring.” One of Brown’s hopes for Latta Memorial is to have the church become more actively involved in the community. An example is the upcoming Community Fun Day, a new event with entertainment, food and fun for everyone. The Community Fun Day is being held at See New Pastor pg 12

Campaign from pg 1 Last school year, the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s Technical College High School (TCHS) students created a new advertising campaign to convince their classmates to join their local Chester County fire station as junior volunteer firefighters. This fall, the fruits of their labor will finally be on display. As part of its ongoing www.Help FightFire.com volunteer recruitment campaign, the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association began collaborating with TCHS Brandywine Campus and TCHS Pickering Campus in September 2018. The goal of the project was for students to help develop marketing materials specifically focused on recruiting high school students across the county to become volunteer junior firefighters. Students created a branded logo and tagline, along with recruitment posters, and they edited together two one-minute public service announcements focusing on the need for junior volunteer firefighters and the benefits of serving the community in this way. Students in teacher Troy Campbell’s commercial and graphic arts class at TCHS Brandywine began by working with representatives from The Communication Solutions Group, the public relations and marketing agency hired by the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association to facilitate the project. Students started developing a brand and tagline specifically to attract high school volunteers. They settled on “The desire to serve. The courage to act. Volunteer today. HelpFightFire.com.” Then, students were asked to create recruitment posters incorporating the new branded logo that would eventually hang in the hallways of schools across the county. Student submitted their concepts and had time to revise them based on the feedback they received. The top three designs were then submitted for final review to the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association, before a winning design was selected. This past spring, the recruitment project moved to teacher Sean Hicks’ digital media and sound communications class at TCHS Pickering. Hicks’ students were tasked with editing together footage and photos of Chester County junior volunteer firefighters at a training session. Students assembled two one-minute public service announcements, which included the branded logo and tagline. To view the videos, readers may visit www.tinyurl .com/yyb5z6e2 and www.tinyurl.com/ yyv7qlap. The recruitment poster and two PSAs have since been distributed to Chester County high schools, along with an editorial piece highlighting the importance and benefits of becoming a junior volunteer firefighter. Chester County high school students will have a chance see these finished products when school starts again in the fall. The hope is that students across Chester County will be inspired by the work done by their classmates and take action to become junior volunteer firefighters themselves. To become a volunteer firefighter or for more information, individuals may visit www.HelpFight Fire.com. Pictured on front:

The Chester County Adult Tutoring Program is seeking volunteers willing to give their time to help adults who are working on their English language, reading, writing and math skills and more. According to Mimi Burstein, assistant coordinator, the program is a partnership between the Chester County Library and Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Coatesville. The OIC serves Chester County residents by providing free adult basic literacy education, life skills and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs that are designed to prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. The OIC is funded entirely by grants and fundraising dollars. In addition to receiving assistance with language skills, students in the Adult Tutoring Program may be looking for help with test preparation, including the high school equivalency diploma, the GED (General Education Diploma); TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) for those interested in nursing; and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which measures the English
business, and Laura is working with her on the vocabulary and topics specific to her needs as a budding entrepreneur.” Jenkins noted that tutoring ESL students is a learning experience for her as well, allowing her to “see our language and culture through the eyes of others.” Tutors and students are asked to make a commitment to work together for one year, meeting for 12 hours a month. No previous teaching experience is necessary, although tutors are required by state funders to have a four-year college degree. Online training for tutors is provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Education and can be completed at home at the tutor’s convenience before tutoring begins. The Chester County Library also has a collection of texts and study guides available for tutors and students for extended borrowing periods to support a wide range of educational goals. “(We) encourage anyone who is interested in, or even just intrigued by, the possibility of volunteering as a tutor to learn more by calling or visiting,” Burstein added.

language ability of non-native speakers who want to enroll in English-speaking universities. The Adult Tutoring Program office is located within the Chester County Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton, where many of the students and tutors can be found working together. “You’ll find pairs working at other public libraries in the county as well,” Burstein said. Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. Tutors and students are then matched based on times available, preferred location and the tutors’ preference for level of student. The Adult Tutoring Program has been operating for more than 20 years. “(The program) strives to match students with tutors who are motivated to develop individualized approaches for their student,” said Burstein. She cited the case of Laura Jenkins, a tutor who has been with the program for more than five years and has worked with several ESL students. “(Laura) is currently working with Chin Wei Huang, a woman from Taiwan who recently passed her citizenship test. Chin Wei’s main focus now is on improving her conversational abilities,” Burstein explained. “A skilled baker and cake decorator, she is now starting a home-based

The club previously completed gaga ball courts at East Ward Elementary School and at Beaver Creek Elementary School, both in the Downingtown Area School District. Club members learned from Rotary member Evelyn Samuels that The POINT was interested in a similar project. Samuels is friends with Bud Herman, facilities manager at The POINT. “There is an organization where you get blueprints and they send you yellow metal pieces (to frame the court) and they tell you how much wood you need and the lengths,”
a kitchen, a dining area and offices. “I was so impressed with the campus when they gave us the tour, with the gym, the music room (and more),” said Wright. The POINT is currently gearing up for its fall fundraiser on Thursday, Oct. 10, that will feature an appearance by Tim Tebow, a Heisman Trophy winner and former National Football League (NFL) player. Tebow will discuss his new book, “Shaken,” which details the highs and lows of his career in the NFL, as well as offer practical advice from Scripture about dealing with life’s challenges. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. Tickets are

explained Rotary president Elva Wright. “Jack Hines, a woodworker, bought the wood and made sure it was seasoned.” The volunteers constructed the gaga ball court in a field next to The POINT, but it will eventually be moved when the facility’s parking lot is competed. “It came together rather quickly; it took us about an hour to put together,” Wright noted. She said that the Rotarians were also given a tour of The POINT, which is a youth center open to boys and girls ages 8 to 18. The newly renovated facility offers a safe place where youths can enjoy games, video games and sports and also receive academic support. The facility includes a full-size gym,

School Supply Lists Posted Online Parents have a new tool this year as a number of local schools’ supply lists are now posted on TeacherLists. Parents can visit www.teacherlists.com/parents to find their child’s exact supply list. Users of the website may then proceed to pre-filled shopping carts on the websites for Target, Walmart, Office Depot, Amazon, or Staples to purchase the items and have them shipped to the shopper’s home. Target, Walmart, Office Depot and Staples also offer in-store pickup. A total of more than 1 million classrooms from 50,000 schools now have lists posted on TeacherLists. The lists include required and requested items as well as specific notes and clarifications from teachers and school staff members. For more information, visit www.teacherlists.com/parents.

Scholarship Contest Announced Ellio’s Pizza has officially kicked off the 2019 Phenomenal Kids Scholarship Contest, which will award a $10,000 scholarship as well as other prizes, including a family vacation to select cities, gift cards and more. The Ellio’s Phenomenal Kids Scholarship Contest invites parents and legal guardians with children between the ages of 6 and 12 to write a brief 500- to 1,500-character submission highlighting what makes their child phenomenal. Participants will be entered in a drawing for the $10,000 scholarship. Key pillars for this year’s contest include: Community Involvement, Passion With Purpose, Creativity and Academic Achievement. Submissions are currently being accepted at www.ellios.com/phenomenalkids. No purchase is necessary. The deadline to apply is Monday, Oct. 14, at 8:59 a.m. Eastern Time. The grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship, a $500 gift card and an Ellio’s swag bag. The second-place winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip for four to their choice of city - New York City, Philadelphia, Boston or Washington, D.C. plus a $100 Amazon gift card and an Ellio’s swag bag. Eight runner-up prize winners will receive a $75 Amazon gift card and an Ellio’s swag bag. Last year, the contest received more than 1,100 submissions, resulting in 10 finalists who submitted short videos showcasing their phenomenal child to the voters and the Ellio’s Pizza community. Fans voted for their favorite submission online. The 2019 contest is open to residents of Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Applicants with more than one eligible child are encouraged to submit one entry for each minor. After the finalists are selected, voting will be open to the public from Tuesday, Nov. 12, through Tuesday, Dec. 3. The scholarship winner will be announced soon after the voting is complete. To learn more about Ellio’s Pizza and how to enter this year’s promotion, readers may visit www.ellios.com/phenomenal kids.
