Heritage Days to highlight the history of Christiana

Heritage Days, which is designed to highlight the history of Christiana, including the Underground Railroad, the Quaker abolitionist movement, the railroad, local agriculture and the area’s industrial history, will be presented by the Christiana Historical Society (CHS) on Friday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sept. 13 will be a music-only event, while the main festivities will take place on Sept. 14. All activities are free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine.

The event will be centered at the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., but will also extend within a short walking distance to the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave.; the Christiana Masonic Lodge, 115 E. Slokom Ave.; and the Underground Railroad Center at Zercher’s Hotel, 11 Green St.

Planning for the event began last November by a committee composed of CHS members as well as people from the community. “We have a lot of different locations and a lot of fun stuff (planned),” said CHS member Terry Buchanan, one of the event organizers. “There is a lot happening; the day is actionpacked. It has the potential to be a phenomenal event.”

New this year will be a bluegrass music festival on Sept. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. The featured artist will be Hilton and the Pickers. There is no charge for the concert, and attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

On Sept. 14, free tours will be

offered at the Christiana Underground Railroad Center. Visitors can learn about the local history of the Underground Railroad, the Abolitionist movement and the Christiana Resistance. People may preregister for tours online or at the hotel on event day.

The public will also have a rare opportunity to visit the Christiana machine shop, which is located next to Zercher’s Hotel. “It has been a pillar of Christiana since (it opened) in 1878,” Buchanan stated.

“The Resistance is the most fascinating piece of history, but Christiana is so rich in history in a lot of other areas.”

The 11th annual Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it will feature a variety of live music, games, demonstrations and other traditional activities to celebrate Scottish culture and history.

Also on Sept. 14, visitors will be able to take a guided wagon tour

through town and learn about the historical significance of local landmarks, the people who lived there and their contribution to local history. Tickets can be pur chased online or on the day of the event. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day. Performers will include the Roland Zimmerman Family, which will perform bluegrass, old-time country music and folk music at 10 a.m.; acoustic guitarist Joel Stoltzfus at 11:30 p.m.; and HDMR, a solo artist who performs his own music, at 2 p.m.

Outside the Brinton House under a tent will be a demonstra tion by local tinsmith Karen Hurd, a program about the history of corn harvesting, a display of Civil War memorial and displays by the Sadsbury Friends Meeting and the Moores Memorial Library, among others. The Lancaster Fencibles will demonstrate molding Civil War bullets and discuss Civil War firearms.

Children’s activities will include a petting zoo, face painting and entertainment by strolling magician Doc Yoder. Children will also be able to explore a fire engine from Christiana Fire Company and be able to put out a simulated house fire with an actual fire hose. A photo booth will also be available.

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

Several years ago, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township was given three portraits formerly belonging to the Todd family of Salisbury and Sadsbury townships. The portraits featured the stern faces of William M. Todd and his wife, Pamela Kirk Taylor Todd, along with a little girl whose name at the time was unknown.

Some research discovered that William and Pamela and several children are buried in the cemetery at Sadsbury Friends Meeting, which lies near the eastern township line on Simmontown Road. Any Quakers within a 5-mile radius would have worshipped in that meetinghouse. Little else was known, except that William and Pamela had 14 children, of whom three died within six months of their birth.

Maryland, from a family replete with Chester and Lancaster County names such as Montgomery, Riddle and Johnson. The historical society’s 2002 “History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania” by Joan Lorenz lists many

Todds and Johnsons in the late 1800s.

Now entrusted to the society’s care is the 14- by 20-inch framed 1886 marriage certificate of Owen Johnson of Gap and Harriet, Pamela and William’s 10th child. Originally it would have been proudly

displayed in the Johnson parlor. The family Bible, also donated to the society, would have been displayed on a special stand in that same parlor.

Included was an adult photo of Harriet and Owen’s son, Everett Johnson, along

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. | PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM

Thanks to a new donation, the historical society was able to follow the family’s genealogy down to the present day. Online searches turned up pages filled with Todds of Chester, Lancaster and York counties, as well as several southern states. The society discovered that Pamela’s parents were Sarah and Joseph Taylor of Gap and that she married William, the son of a stone mason, at the age of 20.

a Gaelic Language Village, which will include interactive activities to highlight Gaelic music and poetry. The Gaelic Language Village, which will be operated by members of the Gaelic School of Baltimore, will also feature a demonstration of “walking the cloth,” a collaborative method of making durable garments and blankets that was created by Scottish women.

Various demonstrations will take place throughout the day, including sheepherding, spinning and weaving. Scottish clans from across Pennsylvania and neighboring states will be in attendance to sell merchandise and refreshments, in addition to offering informational resources on Scottish history. Attendees of all ages may sign up for an educational activity to learn Highland dancing techniques at 2 p.m.

Every year, the Scottish Festival features an old-fashioned haggis ceremony to provide information on the rare dish and its history. Participants in the ceremony may have a taste of haggis and a sip of Scotch whiskey for one of Scotland’s most popular customs.

The Covenanter Scottish Festival was started by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation in 2013 as a means to acquire the funds necessary to restore and maintain the church campus. The event serves as one of the largest fundraisers for the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, which is believed to be North America’s oldest Covenanter church. In recent years, the foundation has used the profits from the Scottish Festival to cover the building’s general maintenance costs and ongoing restoration projects. The funds raised by this year’s event will help the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation replace the ceiling of the church’s museum.

“The Scottish Festival has continued to grow every year, and we’ve continued to add more activities and new attractions,” said Donna McCool, who co-chairs the event with John Girvin. “At first, we had 200 people come out; now we have more than 1,000 participants every year. It’s an event that’s unique to the area, which has a rich history of Scottish and Irish settlers; it’s a good thing for people to honor their heritage.”

Women’s

Bible study posted

Faith Bible Chapel, 140 Bernard Ave., Cochranville, invites women of all denominations to a weekly Bible study, which will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 18. It is tentatively planned to last nine weeks, but schedule changes may be made. The program is an informal discussion group. The study, “James: Faith That Works,” will begin with a message titled “Dependable or Double-Minded,” based on James 1:1-8. Copies of the book may be purchased the morning of the first meeting.

For more information, call Faith Bible Chapel and leave a message for Shirley at 610-593-6333.

with his sister, Lena, and carefully preserved grade school awards from Miss Evans of Waterloo School in Cains, lending even more detail to this family’s history. And May E. Todd, who was a part of the extended Todd family and lived in Salisbury Township, taught in several one-room schools in the late 1800s.

As for the portrait of the little girl, it was not at first identified. Perhaps it was one of William and Pamela’s four daughters. The Find a Grave website helped discover more information. The historical society came up with nothing for William M. Todd, but a search for Pamela Kirk Todd revealed her birth date to be 1826. The dress shown in the photo shows sleeves popular in the 1830s, called “leg of mutton” for their

shape. Pamela would have been about 10 in the 1830s. Placing the face of “old” Pamela and the face of the youngster side by side gives us at least a suspicion that this portrait is actually of Pamela herself.

Itinerant artists often stopped in a town, set up shop and offered portrait services for a fee. Usually all but the face of the person had been mass produced long before so that the head could quickly be filled in. It can be likened to the wooden stands at fairs where the face is just a hole and you pop your head into that hole, and someone takes a photo. The historical society’s portraits appear to be charcoal or pen and ink on a paper/board-covered frame.

More research may fill in additional details of this family.

County government wins award

The National Association of Counties (NACo) recently recognized the Chester County Department of Computing and Information Services (DCIS) as a 2024 Achievement Award recipient for its “Chester County GIS Productivity Tools and Applications” project. DCIS developed a series of geographic information systems (GIS) tools for use by staff members across county government departments that may not only increase productivity, but may also reduce, and in some instances eliminate, unnecessary costs.

Chester County was also lauded by NACo and the Center for Digital Government for maintaining its top-ten digital ranking for counties with populations between 500,000 and 999,999. In reviewing Chester County’s efforts to improve its digital, citizen, and government experience through technology and leadership, the judges noted DCIS’ upskilling of existing staff members, providing new opportunities for innovation, and work with all county departments to identify challenges where tech solutions can help.
