Atglen to host Community Day festivities
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Atglen Community Day, featuring food, vendors, a car show, children’s activities, live entertainment and more, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, being presented by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL), will take place at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.
A highlight of the day will be the car show, which generally attracts 30 to 40 vehicles. The vehicles will be parked along Ridge Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vehicle owners may register on the day of the show or in advance by calling APL at 610-593-6848. Food will be provided by the church trustees. “They will have a
Heritage Days to celebrate Christiana history
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Christiana Historical Society (CHS) will present Christiana Heritage Days on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10. The event is designed to celebrate the history of Christiana, which has a motto of “Freedom Began Here,” and to highlight the Christiana
Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana on Sept. 11, 1851. Activities will take place on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. The building, which is currently undergoing renovations, was once owned by the Brinton family members, who were stationmasters
chicken barbecue, fresh-cut french fries, hot dogs and hamburgers and baked goods,” said Cristi Hahn, who is co-chair of the event along with Lillian Thompson. “The Good Humor ice cream man will also be on hand in uniform selling ice cream.”
“The bumper cars are a new addition to Community Day. We try to have at least one new attraction each year.”
Craft vendors will be set up along the perimeter of the park, and there will be booths set up by representatives from local organizations, such as Kacie’s Cause. Other attractions will include an apple pie-eating contest and a book sale by APL.
Entertainment will be offered throughout the day, including Matt Holub on acoustic guitar. “He is a
mainstay of Community Day. This will be his 11th year,” noted Hahn. The event will also include performances by dancers from Russell’s Dance & Baton Studio and Steel City Dance and Gymnastics, an Abracadabra magic show and a live animal show by Critter Connections.
A live auction will begin at 2 p.m., and there will be an opportunity to win gift baskets. Among the auction items will be home decor, gift baskets and gift cards. “Auction updates, including new items, will be posted on the (Atglen Community Day) Facebook page right up until the event,” noted Hahn.
There will also be children’s games and activities. “For a fee, you get a wristband for unlimited games and the bounce house,” Hahn pointed out. Those who donate canned goods for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) will receive a discount.
For a separate fee, attendees will be able to ride bumper cars that will be located along Ridge Avenue. “The

There is one more chance for community members to enjoy “base ball” as it was played in 1864 as the Brandywine Base Ball Club plays its final games of the season on Saturday, Sept. 9, at East Goshen Park, 1661 Paoli Pike, West Chester.
The Chester County team will take on the Providence Grays Historic Base Ball Club from Rhode Island and the Diamond State Base Ball
Club of Delaware, with games set at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Games are free and open to the public.
“We won’t play on the cut baseball diamonds. Our field is the large open expanse of grass at the north end of the park,” said Rick Stratton, the team’s marketing manager, noting that canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used for bases.
As part of vintage base ball rules, players do not wear gloves, and only one baseball is used during the

on the Underground Railroad. Events that will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9 include historical displays, an appearance by Civil War re-enactors and exhibitors. “The Christiana Fire Company will provide activities for children,” said Kathy Patterson, CHS secretary, noting that a photo booth will be available.
A chicken barbecue will be prepared on-site by Randy Yoder, with proceeds from sales to benefit CHS. Two food trucks - Mocha Motion Coffee and 22bbq - will also be on hand.
Historic wagon tours of the borough will be offered for a fee. Costumed tour guides will provide information about each site on the tour.
Heritage Days is also designed as way for area residents and visitors to learn about the Christiana Resistance, which occurred when a slave owner came from Maryland to
retrieve a slave, whom he deemed to be his property. The black community took a stand and refused his demands. With the black residents receiving help from their Quaker neighbors, a confrontation ensued, which ended with the death of the slave owner. About 40 people - both black and Quaker - were arrested and held for trial on the charge of treason. A team of lawyers, led by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Lancaster, came to their defense and won.
“We meet people that know a little bit about the Resistance but not the whole story,” noted Patterson. “We will fill in a lot of personal details.”
Darlene Colón, society president, who is a descendant of one of the participants in the Resistance, will be at the Underground Railroad Museum, 11 Green St., on Sept. 9 to offer guided tours. Once known as Zercher’s Hotel, the building was

County’s fleet management program sees savings
Chester County Government has realized approximately $1.3 million in savings since engaging the services of Enterprise Fleet Management just over six years ago. The move to the fleet management program, with the fleet leased rather than owned, also means that the county’s 130 leased vehicles are newer, safer and more fuel efficient.
According to the report provided to the county by Enterprise Fleet Management, the original 10-year projected savings to the county was nearly achieved in five years.
The fleet management program allows Chester County’s finance staff to monitor maintenance, fuel usage and overall vehicle utilization to ensure the best use of each vehicle in the fleet.
The county expects to save an additional $2 million in fleet vehicle costs over the next four years.

Scottish Festival will return to Quarryville
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The 10th annual Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it will feature a variety of live music, games, demonstrations and other traditional activities to celebrate Scottish culture and history.
Throughout the day, musical groups such as Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, the Philadelphia and District Pipe Band and Regimental Pipes and Drums will perform arrangements of Scottish music. Traditional instruments such as the bagpipe will be highlighted during the performances.
The festival’s attendees will have an opportunity to participate the Highland Games, which will include a “caber toss.” During this activity, contenders will balance a large and heavy wooden pole as they attempt to flip it onto its opposite end. The Highland Games will also feature contests for Scottish dancers and bagpipers, where performers will showcase their talents before a panel of judges for a chance to earn
medals.
Multiple demonstrations will be held throughout the day, which will include sheepherding, spinning and weaving. A variety of vendors and Scottish clans will operate stands at the festival to sell merchandise and refreshments, as well as to offer informational resources on Scottish history.
During the festival, a ceremony will be held to honor veterans of the Vietnam War and remember those who have served in the military. Each year, the event also incorporates a traditional haggis ceremony to provide information on the rare dish as it is served alongside Scotch whiskey.

Lions Club to host business mixer
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will present a business mixer on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Integrous Fences and Decks, 32 Route 41, Gap. The event is free and will be held outdoors on the Integrous deck.
The mixer is being described by organizers as a networking and community-building event. “I will talk a little bit about the club, but (the goal) is for people to get to know their business neighbors in the Gap area,” said club president Steve Wenrich, noting that complimentary food will be available. “We are doing a cookout with burgers and hog dogs, some side salads,
chips and drinks.”
The Gap Town Clock Lions Club formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a well-known local landmark.
Wenrich noted that membership is not limited to people who own businesses. “We are happy to have anybody join,” he said, adding that the club is both a service and social organization. “The goal is community service, but there is certainly fellowship involved.”
The club’s largest fundraiser has been its annual Christmas bazaar held at the Gap Fire Hall. “Thanks to community support, we have
been able to donate money to the Gap Fire Company, Factory Ministries, Christiana Community Ambulance and the Pequea Valley Education Foundation,” said Wenrich. “The last couple of years we have been very successful with the bazaar.”
This year’s bazaar will also take place at the Gap Fire Hall and is set for Saturday, Dec. 2. Vendors interested in taking part in the bazaar may email steverw23@gmail.com for an application or send a message to the club on its Facebook page.
For more information about the club, the business mixer or the bazaar, visit www.facebook.com/ gaplionsclub.

Engaging hobbies for seniors
The value of hobbies is undeniable. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that employees who engaged in creative hobbies outside of work were more creative on work projects and had a better attitude on the job. A separate study published in Psychosomatic Medicine in 2009 reported that individuals who engaged in enjoyable leisure activities had lower blood pressure and a smaller waist circumference.
The beneficial nature of hobbies is good news for seniors, many of whom have ample time for leisure activities. Whether seniors are retired or still working but don’t have the responsibilities of parenting, the following are some fun and engaging hobbies to fill that free time.
717-299-4007
- Cooking: Years spent hustling and bustling through the daily grind of personal and professional obligations might have forced individuals to focus on cooking that
emphasized convenience over culinary skill. With more free time, seniors can look to cooking classes or take the self-taught route and purchase a new cookbook filled with delicious recipes. A wellcooked homemade meal can provide a sense of accomplishment and afford seniors an opportunity to control the ingredients in the foods they eat, which can be important for individuals with health-related dietary restrictions.
- Writing: Many individuals have penned their memoirs after notable careers and lives. While individuals needn’t make their memoirs public, writing can be a great way for seniors to document their own lives and the lives of their family members. Interest in genealogy has risen considerably in recent years, as easily accessi-
ble websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com have made it easier than ever for individuals to learn about their roots. Seniors can contextualize the information provided by genealogy websites by writing about their personal experiences and sharing what they know about the lives of their parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members.
- Gardening: Seniors looking for hobbies that get them out in the great outdoors need look no further than their own backyards. Gardening can benefit the body in myriad ways. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS), gardening has the potential to burn as many calories as working out in the gym. In addition, the MCHS notes that individuals who grow their own fruits and vegetables are more likely to include those foods
in their own diets, thus saving them money at the grocery store and also increasing their intake of nutrientrich foods.
- Swimming: Swimming is an ideal exercise for seniors, as it’s lowimpact but still a great way to utilize the entire body. A 2007 study published in the journal Quality of Life Research found that water-based exercise improves older adults’ quality of life and decreases disability. A separate study published in 2008 in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that waterbased exercise can improve or help to maintain bone health in postmenopausal women. These are just a few of the many hobbies seniors can pursue as they look for positive and fun ways to spend their free time.
How to start a seniors’ social club
Various changes are associated with aging, and these can be physical, mental, and emotional. Although each person manages these changes in his or her own way, there’s no denying that social interaction can benefit people from all walks of life as they navigate their golden years.
The Foundation for Senior Care says socializing can give seniors a sense of purpose, stimulate the mind, relieve boredom, potentially prevent feelings of depression, and give individuals something to look forward to. The senior living center Aston Gardens says socialization provides a significant boost to the cognitive health of older adults, helping to prevent or delay conditions that can affect memory. Individuals looking to cultivate healthy social interactions may turn to clubs and other groups. If there’s a dearth of opportunities, individuals can start and promote their own social club.
When considering forming a new group, people must decide on the group’s purpose. Social clubs can meet
and be organized around any number of themes or interests, such as gardening, crocheting, reading, or other shared hobbies. Friends also may be interested in doing food and beverage sampling. In such instances, a luncheon social club makes sense.
After choosing a theme, conduct a search of groups already meeting within a 50-mile radius to see if an existing group already meets your criteria. If not, proceed full speed ahead to establish the new club.
People may turn to social media to spread the word about their group. Although traditional methods of communication may still be available, such as posting information in a community bulletin or on a message board at a local house of worship, the internet can sometimes be a speedier messenger. Facebook groups are one way to organize social clubs, as is the website Meetup.com. The latter is a large online network of offline groups that meet all over the country and the world. The website makes it a snap to
organize a local group or find an existing club.
Group leaders should also establish consistent meeting times, as most people prefer a schedule so they can plan their days accordingly. Choose a regular meeting time and place to hold the social club; otherwise, it can be confusing to accommodate everyone. Inconsistency also can make it hard to get the club off the ground.
People forming new clubs are advised to start small and then build. For those new to hosting social clubs, it may be better to begin with only a few members as everyone gets into a groove. As the group becomes more established, it can be opened up to more members, although people may consider capping membership so that the group is more easily managed.
Social clubs are a great way for seniors to stay connected and active. When there isn’t one that meets a person’s interests, he or she may consider starting one.
Strength training for seniors
A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain long-term health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age. Adults age 65 and older should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a week of
moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.
- Speak with a health care provider first. Before beginning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strategies that are safe and point out any exercises that may com-
promise the patient’s overall health.
- Master basic exercises first. Anyone new to strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.
- Advance to resistance bands. When a person is ready to move on to something else, he or she may

Staying connected
How retirees can engage with their communities
People who are still a part of the workforce usually experience social interaction throughout the day as they collaborate on projects or gather with colleagues for lunch. Even those working remotely likely attend meetings virtually and communicate with co-workers by phone or email. Without co-workers around, retirees may sometimes find their social lives lacking. People may need to take steps to strengthen their social capital, a term that describes the strength of a person’s social relationships and the extent to which people feel physically and emotionally supported by their communities. Retirees may look to a variety of activities in the community to keep them connected with others.
- Join a club or group. Individuals can identify an activity they find interesting and determine if there is a way to get involved with it in their community. Senior centers or adult activity providers may sponsor local programs, and libraries often host a variety of club and interest group meetings.
- Participate in worship. Many older adults find they want to reconnect with their faith at this point in their lives, even if attending services wasn’t a top priority earlier in life. Reach out to a local house of worship and find out when services take place and what activities are available.
- Read to children. Seniors can volunteer their services at a library by reading to youngsters. Interacting with other generations can be inspiring.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or
food pantry. Times continue to be challenging for many people who may find it hard to cover their expenses, and soup kitchens and food pantries can be a saving grace for those who might otherwise miss meals. Volunteering one’s time at these organizations can help make a difference in the lives of community members.
- Become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional. Many schools are experiencing shortages of qualified staff members. Retirees may find a place helping to shape the minds of youngsters by volunteering at schools or taking on part-time jobs in the classroom.
- Become a mentor. Seniors can share their knowledge and experiences with a student, family member or other community member. Mentors needn’t have an advanced
Picking the right time to retire
Professionals work hard to achieve both short- and long-term goals. Retirement certainly qualifies as a long-term goal, and many people spend decades building and investing in a nest egg that they hope will help them enjoy their golden years to the fullest extent.
The decision regarding when to retire is affected by a host of variables, so a good time for one individual may not be ideal for another.
Professionals on the cusp of retirement can consider several factors as they try to pick the right time to retire.
Individuals should familiarize themselves with the rules of Social Security so they can maximize their benefits. Individuals can begin claiming Social Security benefits at age 62, although those benefits will be reduced by 25%. If individuals wait until they are 66 or, in some cases, 67 to claim Social Security benefits, they will receive their full benefits. The
Social Security Administration notes that those who can wait until age 70 to claim benefits will receive as much as 132% of the monthly benefit they would have received at full retirement age. These distinctions are especially important for people who will be looking to government-sponsored programs to provide significant financial support in retirement. Individuals who won’t rely as heavily on such programs may be able to retire earlier.
Seniors should also consider their debts. Carrying debt into retirement can be risky, so it’s ideal to pay off all debts, including a mortgage and car payments, before retiring. Doing so can provide more financial flexibility and make it easier to manage unforeseen expenses, such as those incurred due to health problems.
Seniors must also consider their retirement living expenses. It’s clear that a sizable nest egg is a necessity for anyone hoping to live comfortably
Strength training
consider resistance bands as an alternative to free weights. The bands can help a person develop good form before introducing weight. Good form is key to avoiding injury.
- Work with a trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can help a person learn how to use free weights and strength-training machines correctly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build
frompg 8
and maintain muscle mass. If someone decides against hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide them on using equipment and demonstrate proper form.
- Exercise with a friend. Strength training with a friend or family member can provide motivation and keep people on target to meet their goals.
- Build up gradually. A person’s first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to
degree or special certification, but they should have more experience in a given field or subject than the mentee. The mentor should ask the mentee about his or her goals and expectations, listen carefully and then respond to the questions and needs of the mentee and adjust the material discussed as necessary to help the mentee meet his or her goals. Sessions should be planned at a time that suits both the mentee and mentor. Mentoring does not only benefit mentees; for mentors, it can keep an aging mind sharp, provide additional meaning and purpose to life and foster social connections.
- Befriend neighbors. A passing greeting may have been the norm when people were busy working, but once people are retired, they may have more opportunities to get to know their neighbors better. Neighbors may even take turns hosting get-togethers. Moving to a retirement or active adult community may facilitate such friendships.
in retirement, but the tricky part is figuring out just how big that nest egg must be. Individuals can speak with a financial adviser and discuss what their retirement living expenses will be. Conventional wisdom based on the Consumer Price Index suggests individuals will need to replace between 70% and 80% of their preretirement income after concluding their career. But even that figure is not set in stone, as rising inflation, such as the rapid spike experienced in 2022, can quickly put retirees in financial jeopardy. By estimating the expenses they might have in retirement, individuals can begin to see how close to or far away from retirement they may be. They should budget for inflation so any spike in living expenses can be easier to manage.
Many individuals recognize that there’s no perfect time to retire, but a few simple strategies can help people make the best decision possible.
- Volunteer with local government. Retirees may enter a local school board election or try to become a member of the town council.
These are just a few of the many ways that retiree may get involved in their community and maintain strong social ties.
Tiffany Chag, a strength coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session.
Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.

entire game. The games have only one umpire, and all pitching is underhand.
The teams follow the rules and customs established in 1864 by dressing in historically similar attire and using period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and handstitched balls made exclusively for vintage play, The baseballs are slightly bigger and softer than the modern version. Team members do wear cleats, but all modern-day logos are covered with black tape.
The team’s most recent outing was on Aug. 26, when it played for the first time at Limerick Community Park against the Mutual Base Ball Club of New York. At the end of each inning, one player announced the score of the game with runs called “tallies.” For example, the Brandywine Club scored five tallies in the first inning.
Fans enjoyed learning about the historical aspects of the game from the players, who took time to explain the differences and similarities between 19th-century base ball and modern baseball.
For example, during the game, spectators had to wait after a home run while the players retrieved the ball from over the
fence since it was the only ball used. “They used one ball throughout the whole game because they were expensive to come by,” explained Brandywine Base Ball pitcher Bryan Kopcik. “Often, they were handmade. The club would tailor them to their needs. So if you had a fast club, it might make the ball more ‘dead.’ If they had power, they would wind the cord tighter. This way it would get more pop off the bat.”
Kopcik added that playing the sport without a glove is something that players get used to. “The first couple of games (your hands) are more tender,” he said, noting the baseball does soften up as play goes on. “You can still break a finger if you don’t catch it right. We advise (beginners) to catch it like a football instead of grabbing at it in the air.”
Even though the teams follow the rules of vintage play, Stratton said, the teams still play to win. “It’s all about history, but it’s also very competitive,” he stated.
For more information about the Brandywine Base Ball Club, visit www.brandywinebbc.org or www .facebook.com/BrandywineBBC. Prospective players may send a message to the team on Facebook or email brandywinebbc@gmail.com.

Scottish Festival
Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation in 2013 as a way to acquire the funds necessary to restore and maintain the church campus, which is known as the oldest Covenanter church in North America. The majority of the foundation’s profits from last year’s festival have been used for the general upkeep of the building, due to a few setbacks in the restoration process. The foundation began to replace the electrical wiring of the structure earlier in the year, but it halted the project after encountering a colony of bats.
Attached to the church is the school room museum, which is curated by former foundation president Barry Girvin. The museum houses a collection of artifacts and documents from Scotland
frompg 6
that were brought to Pennsylvania by settlers in the 18th century. The museum also contains records of families and students from the many schools that once populated the Southern End, which date back from the 19th century up until the formation of the Solanco School District. Before the it was converted into a museum, the building served as Bart Township’s high school.
“(The museum) has a wide range of history on the Covenanter Church, Middle Octorara and many other churches and schools that were in the area,” Girvin said. “We have some artifacts from them that are quite unusual.” Girvin hopes to have the museum open for tours by the day of the festival.

Kids Carnival set at Limeville Church
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Parents looking for a free afternoon of entertainment for their children are invited to a Kids Carnival being presented at Limeville Church
on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Featured activities will include a bounce house, a barrel train ride, carnival-type games and storytelling. “We will also have face painting and sand art. New this year
is a photo booth,” said Deb Baldwin, who is organizing the event along with Jane Haugh and other church volunteers.
All children in attendance will receive a prize and free snacks. “When they come, they will get a bag with a prize ticket in there and tickets for free popcorn, a snow cone and cotton candy,” Baldwin explained, noting that information about the church and its services and outreach activities will also be included in the bag. “There will also be a ticket for all children and adults
to get a free hot dog and water.” Additional quantities of food can be purchased.
Children will be able to choose a prize from the prize table. “We have bubbles, puzzles, blow-up baseball bats and other fun little stuff that has been donated,” Baldwin noted.
All events will take place outdoors in a grassy area behind the church, and there will be no charge for any of the activities. All children in attendance must

Changes in schooling
Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township
What do children need to know to succeed in adulthood? By the 1800s, people began thinking that all children should have at least some education. In 1834, Pennsylvania mandated public schooling be provided for all children until age 13 to provide the skills needed in the
expanding and more demanding world of the early to mid-1800s.
Instruction in all the state-run schools included reading, writing, arithmetic, history and geography. Post-Civil War schools began adding music, art and hygiene. At first, teachers were male, but soon women, working for less pay, were hired since state-run schools depended on unpopular property taxes.

States soon required teachers to have a modicum of instruction in teaching before being sent out in the field, though country schools still depended on recent eighthgrade graduates to teach the lower grades. Two-year normal schools were established to teach prospective educators. As time went by, many of these schools became real colleges and then universities catering to other subjects to prepare leaders who were cognizant of the world beyond the farm and manufacturing work.
Education above eighth grade spread. High schools were set up, usually near the main city of the county or township. These schools
Carnival
began preparing boys and girls for jobs requiring more than the basic arithmetic, reading and writing. Higher math, science, public speaking and world history as well as critical thinking, debating and sports encouraged even higher learning. Young men and, later, young women attended college for degrees in the sciences, literature and mathematics as well as teaching.
As inventions pushed the new technologies into more parts of society, students began needing more and more education to compete in real life. There were still many who worked at simple jobs needing only the basics, but there was a burgeoning need for proof of education to get and hold a job. The new colleges filled that need. There were classes in reasoning and ethics. Many students held down part-time jobs to pay for room and board. Parents often handed down their own old college books to their children.
While the sciences required newer books, the other classes did not change much. Philosophy, reasoning, ethics, Latin, Greek and math pretty much stayed the same.
The need for further education continues. Technology requires continued learning long past young adulthood. Today, many 30- and 40-year-olds are going back to college - often online - to keep up with our changing world.

“(People) look forward to the event. We had 127 children (in attendance) last year. We were very pleased with the turnout,” Baldwin added.
The carnival is just one community outreach offered by Limeville Church. It also holds an annual Christmas program for families and an Easter egg hunt.
The church is also home to Limeville’s Blessings, a store that offers free clothing, hygiene prod-
ucts, basic household items and children’s toys to people in need.
Limeville’s Blessings is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more details, visit www.facebook .com/LimevillesBlessingsStore.
Beginning in October, the church will offer Great Bible Adventures, a weekly children’s program that will be meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The church will also present its first craft show on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors interested in participating in the event may call the church office at 717-442-4010 or email limevilleumc@gmail.com.

The U.S. was largely rural and agriculture-dominated, so most children needed little formal education to be able to run a farm, sell produce and buy the new machines that were making farming less physically demanding but more complicated. A basic education still provided all that those children needed to be successful. A few students went on to colleges to be able to move into higher-status circles.
What do children need to know to succeed in adulthood? Much more in the 21st century than ever before.
A school desk from the Springville School complete with the original ink well is part of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township’s collection.
Church is held at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school for people of all ages is offered prior to the service at 9 a.m. All services are livestreamed on Facebook.
