Heritage Days to highlight the history of Christiana

Heritage Days, which is designed to highlight the history of Christiana, including the Underground Railroad, the Quaker abolitionist movement, the railroad, local agriculture and the area’s industrial history, will be presented by the Christiana Historical Society (CHS) on Friday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 will be a music-only event, while the main festivities will take place on Sept. 14. All activities are free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine.

The event will be centered at the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., but will also extend within a short walking distance to the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave.; the Christiana Masonic Lodge, 115 E. Slokom Ave.; and the Underground Railroad Center at Zercher’s Hotel, 11 Green St.

Planning for the event began last November by a committee composed of CHS members as well as people from the community. “We have a lot of different locations and a lot of fun stuff (planned),” said CHS member Terry Buchanan, one of the event organizers. “There is a lot happening; the day is action-packed. It

has the potential to be a phenomenal event.”

New this year will be a bluegrass music festival on Sept. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. The featured artist will be Hilton and the Pickers. There is no charge for the concert, and attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

On Sept. 14, free tours will be offered at the Christiana Underground Railroad Center. Visitors can learn about the local history of the Underground Railroad, the Abolitionist movement and the Christiana Resistance. People may preregister for tours online or at the hotel on event day.

The public will also have a rare opportunity to visit the

“There will also be information in the bag about the church, the (Limeville’s) Blessings store and the Monday night children’s program (beginning in October).”

County awarded funding to combat homelessness

Chester County Government’s focus on ending homelessness recently received an $800,000 boost with a grant awarded by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA). PHFA’s Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) funds will expand the county’s current effort to support those who are experiencing homelessness, with the goal of helping them to become safely and permanently housed.

The activities that will be funded under the PHARE grant include support for Chester County’s 211

Call Center, expansion of the county’s Street Outreach Team, emergency housing coordination, and a strategic plan effort for Chester County’s Partnership to End Homelessness initiative.

Since the PHARE funding began in 2018, Chester County’s Department of Community Development has received a total of $3.1 million to enhance and expand efforts to prevent and end homelessness.

In addition to Chester County’s Department of Community Development, 14 other county organizations received PHARE grants totaling

more than $3 million. Many of these organizations are part of the Chester County Partnership to End Homelessness network. Funding for the PHARE awards comes from two main sources. Since 2012, the program has received a portion of the impact fees collected from natural gas companies operating in Pennsylvania with a goal of addressing the housing shortage caused by the impact of drilling. That money is supplemented with funding provided by a portion of the realty transfer tax.

Showcasing all the work that 4-H members complete throughout the year is the goal of the Chester County 4-H Fair, held annually at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. During this year’s event, which ran from Aug. 5 to 10, 4-H members demonstrated their skill in the handling and care of farm animals, including beef

cattle, dairy cows, breeding sheep, market lambs, swine, goats and horses.

In addition to the live animal shows, 4-H youths displayed projects in various categories, such as sewing and crocheting, woodworking, plants and vegetables, cut flowers, expressive arts, photography, painting and arts and crafts. This year’s show featured 289 tabletop projects.

The Chester County 4-H Dairy Show was held as part of the 4-H Fair Week on Aug. 9. This year, the show was divided by dairy breeds and was judged by Mark Welk of Kirkwood.

“We have a different judge every year because judging is so subjective,” explained Toni Stuetz, Penn State Extension educator. “It’s good for the kids to see and experience somebody different and get different feedback as well.”

Stuetz explained that the dairy show competition is judged in two categoriesShowmanship and Fitting. Showmanship scores are based on how well the 4-H

members show the best qualities of their animals, while also displaying their skill in handling their animals. Fitting is how well the animals are prepared for the show and how well they hold up under pressure during judging.

“When they’re doing showmanship, which is how well the child shows the animal, is the place where he gives feedback (about what they could do better),” Stuetz explained. “When he does fitting, which is how well the animals are ready to show, he gives feedback about (the animal’s appearance).”

chicken barbecue from the fire company,” said Lin Newlin, a member of the organizing committee.

The Rockdale Boys from Delaware County will be on hand to perform bluegrass and gospel music. Attendees should bring lawn chairs for seating.

SINGING SPRING FOODS

All attendees will have an opportunity to win prizes donated by local businesses. “Everybody age 18 and over will be given a ticket, and we will (announce winners) throughout the event,” Newlin pointed out. People do not have to be present to win.

All events will take place outdoors, but in the case of rain, activities will be moved inside the garage area of the township building.

Because of inclement weather last year, some of the activities were moved indoors. “It rained last year, so we were not able to do the hayrides, but we had a break in the rain, so we were able to do the kids’ candy scramble, which was an outside event,” Newlin noted. “We have enough room to have all activities indoors. We are hoping not to have to do that this year.”

She said the goal of the day is for residents to meet their neighbors as well as township officials. “The purpose of the event is to promote friendly good will between the township residents and the businesses in the township and to let them meet the township supervisors and staff,” Newlin said. “(Township officials) are there throughout the day, so people can mix and mingle with them.”

“It worked out so well last year,” she added. “People reacted positively to (Community Day), and we decided to do it again.”

For more information about Community Day, call the township office at 610-593-6796 or visit www .sadsburytownshiplancaster .org. Volunteers interested in working on Community Day are also asked to contact the township office.

For example, she said, the judge may suggest using special whitening shampoo for predominantly white cows. “Non-concentrated Dawn dish soap is one of the best things for washing the cows,” said Stuetz, adding, “(Preparing to show an animal) is a lot of hard work.”

She noted that 50 dairy animals were featured this year by 35 participants, who all wore traditional white clothing for the event. “We have 35 different 4-H kids from all over the county (representing) four dairy clubs,” reported Stuetz. “We have eight seniors that are aging out, so this will be their last show.”

4-H is the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension. The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and health. 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 18.

More than 5,000 young people are involved in 4-H in Chester County. Clubs meet in local homes, schools, churches or community centers. Current clubs include Dairy, Dairy Goat, Livestock, Small Animal and Robotics/Engineering. 4-H Community Clubs in Chester County include the West Chester Sewing Club; the Chesco Outdoor Club, which meets monthly at various locations in Chester County; the Shooting Sports Air Pistol Club, which meets at the Romano Center; and the 4-H Archery Club, which meets in Oxford. A Cloverbuds Club for children ages 5 to 8 meets at the Romano Center.

Also offered is the Northern Chester County 4-H Horse and Pony Club, which meets at the Line It Up Farm in Coatesville. Because of the rain-soaked arena at the Romano Center, the 4-H Fair’s horse show was moved to the Line It Up Farm on Aug. 10.

Humane Pennsylvania president and CEO celebrates 20 years

What started out as a part-time job at the Chester County SPCA (now the Brandywine Valley SPCA) has turned into a career in animal welfare for Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane Pennsylvania (PA), who recently celebrated his 20th year with the organization.

Minor, who was honored in July with a celebratory luncheon and presented with a 20-year service pin, joined the Humane Society of Berks County in 2004. In 2014, he led the merger of the Humane Society of Berks County and the Humane League of Lancaster County to form Humane PA.

Minor is a graduate of West Chester University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in earth and space science. During his 30-plus year career, Minor has served in various positions including operations, education, fundraising and development.

“I was finishing my degree, and my wife suggested that I could fill in my schedule with a part-time job,” explained Minor. “I was a part-time adoption counselor at the Chester County SPCA, then stepped into community educator and then operations manager, and that became a full-time job. I then picked up development and fundraising positions, and that became a permanent job.”

“I wasn’t expecting it to be career, and I am still in it,” he added, noting that his family currently has four cats, a baby turtle and three Costa Rican dart frogs. The family recently lost its senior dog, Treetop, a Labrador retriever.

Today, Minor is responsible for the overall operations of Humane PA, which includes the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading; the Humane Pennsylvania Lancaster Campus, 2195 Lincoln Highway East; the Humane Veterinary Hospital, 1729 N. 11th St., Reading; the Giorgi Family Community Resource Center, 1350 Schuylkill Ave., Reading, which offers a pet food pantry, vaccines and microchip clinic; and the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park, 503 S. Center Road (Route 82), Birdsboro.

“I hire senior-level staff, and I am involved in the process from top to bottom - budgeting, developing programs, how things run and where we should be going in the future,” Minor stated. “I do everything and more.”

Although his primary office is in Reading, Minor visits the various Humane PA facilities during the week, including the Lancaster campus, which recently opened a new Cat & Critter Adoption Center.

Minor said that he is proud of what he and his team have been able to accomplish through the years, such as no-fee

Road safety tips for school season posted

With school beginning again, drivers are reminded to drive safely, pay extra attention around schools and bus stops, and follow Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law.

Under this law, motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, overtaking a bus, meeting a bus, or approaching an intersection where a

bus is stopped. Motorists should not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety.

If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails, or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing

lanes may proceed without stopping.

The penalties for violating the School Bus Stopping Law can be significant, including a 60-day driver’s license suspension, five points on one’s driving record, and a fine.

According to PennDOT, each year hundreds of drivers are convicted for passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing. In addition, some school districts have equipped school buses with stop-arm cameras, designed to capture and record violations.

Motorists are also reminded to slow down to

the posted speed limit of 15 mph in school zones, which are particularly busy in the morning and afternoon hours during student arrival and dismissal.

During the school year, drivers are advised to allow extra time for their commute. They should not use a cell phone while driving, and they should pay extra attention when approaching a school bus or crosswalk.

Parents and families should talk with bus riders about safety while boarding, exiting, or waiting for the bus, including standing
