Bike Chester County Offers Group Rides By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Group rides on Thursday evenings and a recent children’s bike rodeo have been keeping members of Bike Chester County busy in the Atglen area. Bike Chester County is a volunteerbased organization that focuses on bike advocacy. The group is managed under the larger seven-county organization, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. Each Thursday at 6 p.m. through Oct. 4, a Bike Chester County group will meet at the Atglen Borough Hall, 120 Main St., Atglen, to enjoy a ride of about 10 miles on area roads. “On a night like tonight, when it’s nice and cool and bright, it’s just beautiful,”
Jan Johnson said as the group prepared to head out on Aug. 23. “I moved to the area 37 years ago, and I’ve been riding all those years. I often come out in this direction and ride, and it’s been fun.” There are no fees or requirements for participation in the rides other than a usable bicycle and a safety helmet. A bicycle light is recommended. “I started leading these rides for Bike Chester County to get people out who are beginners, to get them ... comfortable riding on the road,” Johnson said. “We go about 10 miles, but we can add miles on if we want to. We usually ride along Octorara Creek because it’s cool and it’s shady and it’s beautiful and it’s flat.” See Bike Chester County pg 7
Jan Johnson (center) leads Bike Chester County group rides out of Atglen each Thursday at 6 p.m. starting from the Atglen Borough Hall. Participants on Aug. 23 included Barb Albright (left) and Nancy Pelet. Rides will be offered through the first week of October.

Sandwich and Talk” evening on Thursday, Sept. 27, will be held at Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap, and then the events will relocate to Dutchland for the October session and onward. Mowday noted that when the gathering moves to Dutchland in October, there will be no formal sermon format. Rather, the “talk” portion of the evening will include a group discussion. Mowday draws inspiration for Word UP Community Ministries from a Bible passage brought to his attention more than 20 years ago by Ann and Jonas Beiler when he started his ministry with Victory Chapel. The passage, Isaiah 43:19, states “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” “About three years ago, the Holy Spirit reminded me of this Scripture, that God wants to do a new thing. For me, and for Word UP, I believe this is the new thing,” Mowday said. Mowday will be the pastor, but he will be taking a different title lead follower. “Christ will be the Shepherd, I’m going to be the lead follower and other folks that come will be the followers,” he said.
OCTORARA EDITION
The focus of the church is on service. “We want to serve God by serving others. We’re going to stay focused on that and look for opportunities to do that in Gap and the surrounding community,” Mowday said. Putting together a new church is a big task. “There are a lot of people to thank. First and foremost to thank is my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, for all that He’s done in my life over the years,” Mowday said. “I have a great wife, Verna, that supports me and encourages me in ministry and two great couples, Lloyd and Gail Murphy and Rodney and Stephanie Smoker, who are on the board supporting this whole vision.” “It has been a while working on getting this together,” Lloyd added. “We had many meetings to see what we can do and how we can do it.” To prepare for the new services, there will be a volunteer training day on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 9 a.m. at the Dutchland building. Those interested in assisting as ushers, greeters, parking attendants or café staff, as well as in other positions, are encouraged to attend the training session and become a part of the ministry. Attendees do not have to contact Mowday in advance to attend. Mowday is also looking for people who would like to be a part of the Sunday service, including worship leaders or those who play guitar or keyboard. For more information about Word UP, readers may call Mowday at 717-330-0561 or search for “Word UP Community Ministries” on Facebook.

O’Sullivan said that the library has accepted book donations from area residents throughout the summer, with a large number of books coming from members of the Intercourse Lions Club, the group that founded the PVPL. “We have taken in donations and culled some of our own collection to make space for new items,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that books will be sold by donation. “We have several hundred books for all ages on all subjects and from all genres,” said O’Sullivan. She stated that inspirational books and books for children number heavily among the many that have been donated for the event. “We appreciate the donations,” O’Sullivan said, adding that office supplies, including rolls of paper and tape, will also be sold. A new wing featuring classrooms and office space at the Avon Grove Charter School’s Kemblesville campus has been completed on time and within budget. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held on Aug. 23 with many of the people who made the project possible in attendance. The new 40,000-square-foot, two-story addition blends seamlessly to the building, adding seven third-grade classrooms; a music room; a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) room; administrative offices; a conference room; and a storage room for students’ records. The project also included an addition to the parking lot and new playground space. “The purpose of this amazing project is so that third grade can come and move back over here
from the main campus,” said Kristen Bishop, CEO and head of school. “We also have a business office we were renting in Jennersville. Now we can save the rental cost, because we have a new business office and administrative space that was very much needed.” The charter school had a $5.9 million budget for the project and completed the expansion within that amount. The construction project, which broke ground last October, was also on time, so third-graders could begin the school year in their new classrooms on opening day, Aug. 27. “We started planning three years ago, along with working on a bond issue,” financial officer Donna Archer explained. The Kemblesville campus had been dedicated to kindergarten and first and second grades, while the main campus on State

It gives them another year before they go into the high school building.” For more information about Avon Grove Charter School, readers may visit www.agcharter.org or w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / A v o n GroveCharterSchool.
Road, a former high school building, housed the remaining grades for the charter school. This year, third-grade students have been welcomed into new spaces designed with them in mind. The classrooms are bright and cheery, with flexible seating. The STEM classroom features a Lego theme, including Lego-covered walls. Outside, the playground includes a unique feature - a bicycle track. “I think we’re the only school in Chester County that has a bike path for children to ride in recess. We’re really excited about it,” Bishop said. Relocation of the third grade to Kemblesville has allowed the charter school to increase the grade’s enrollment to 180 students. Numbers are also increasing for the charter school, with 1,865 students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade this school year, up from 1,640 in 2017-18. “We’re excited about the ability for the school to provide

Churchtown UMC To Celebrate Anniversary Churchtown United Methodist Church (UMC), 2170 Main St., Narvon, will celebrate its 180th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 16. During worship at 9 a.m., special music will be provided by Glenn Gordon and the 1970s children’s choir established by his father. A discussion on the 50th anniversary of the United Methodist Church will be presented by Bishop Peggy Johnson, resident bishop of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The worship celebration will be followed by a brunch in the fellowship hall. The church was founded as a Methodist Episcopal Church in 1838. Circuit riding ministers were active from 1800 on, leading to the establishment of the church in Churchtown as part of an 11-church circuit.
The Chester County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) reminds local residents of the “When in doubt, throw it out” message that applies to recyclable materials and curbside collection programs. According to the SWA, overzealous recyclers may contaminate recyclables with trash, which ruins the ability to market the materials. Properly prepared and collected recyclables are valued commodities sold on the global market. However, when too many nonrecyclables are mixed in with the recyclable material, it all becomes trash because it is too costly to separate and requires disposal at a landfill. This results in more money being spent on collecting, transportating, and processing material that was not worth collecting in the first place. Material such as hangers, scrap metal, pieces of rope or hose, pieces of wood, yard waste, and children’s toys are just a few of the items that contaminate recyclables. Scrap metal may be taken to a scrap dealer, yard waste should be composted, and children’s toys may be donated or thrown away if they are broken. These items, along with Styrofoam, polystyrene, and other foam materials, should not be placed in recycling bins. In addition, plastic bags present a problem because they are not recyclable in most curbside programs. The bags jam the source separating equipment at recycling facilities. Therefore, plastic shopping bags should be returned to a local grocery store, where recycling containers for the bags are typically located at the entrance of the store. Most curbside recycling programs in Chester County collect mixed paper, flattened corrugated cardboard cut down to 18 by 24 inches, glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and containers with recycling numbers of 1 through 5, as well as 7. SWA programs also collect clean aluminum foil, pie tins, and empty steel aerosol cans. Only plastic containers and bottles with recycling symbols can be recycled. If there is no recycling symbol, it should be thrown away. For more information, readers may contact their local hauler or municipal recycling coordinator or visit www.chestercountyswa.org.
