Atglen Community Day To Feature Food, Crafters, Music And More BY MARCELLA PEYRE-FERRY

A scaled-down version of Atglen Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Atglen Community Park, 404 Ridge Ave., with consideration for safety being a top priority. “We wrestled with whether we should cancel or (not) cancel,” said Cristi Hahn, office coordinator for Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, which will present the eighth annual event. “We are asking everyone to follow all CDC and state recommendations. We really want it to be a safe event.” The Community Day event is organized by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church deacons, with support of Atglen Borough, Atglen Public Library (APL) and sponsoring businesses, including Summers & Zim’s Inc. and J.D. Eckman Inc. Several features of the Community Day have been dropped for this

year. There will be no bounce houses, dunk tank, games or Apple Festival contests. Instead of the live auction, there will be a small silent auction and a chance to win prizes through a random drawing. That does not mean there will not be plenty to do. Included in the day’s events will be food, including chicken barbecue, hot dogs, french fries and beverages. Crafters and vendors will have booths along the fence in the Atglen Community Park with 10-by-10-foot spaces. “We have a lot more room to work with in the park,” Hahn said. Vendors will sell items such as books, jewelry and gourmet food items. Those who would like to reserve a space may do so by emailing Maureen.K.Fox@gmail.com. There will be entertainment until 3 p.m. Critter Connection will bring live animals and reptiles to view, and Steel City Gymnastics will also perform.

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. because of COVID,” Wenrich noted. “It’s a really good time to join.” The Gap Town Clock Lions Club is a relatively new club, having formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a local attraction. So far, the club, which has about 20 members, has held a chicken barbecue, as well as a Christmas bazaar at Gap Fire Hall. Some of the proceeds benefited the Career Occupation Relevant Education (C.O.R.E.) program in the Pequea Valley School District, which provides students with hands-on learning opportunities, teaches them trades and promotes craftsmanship. “A lot of the money raised goes toward the C.O.R.E. program, which is a career path for people who are not looking to go through college,” Wenrich explained. “We have partnered to raise funds for them.” The Gap Town Clock Lions

Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at Integrous. “We did Zoom meetings for a few months April, May and June,” Wenrich pointed out. “For July, August and September, we have met in person. Typically, we’ll have coffee and we meet in the large upstairs conference room.” The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1. Wenrich emphasized that attendance at the ice cream social does not obligate any-

one to join the club. “We are looking to recruit some members, but it will be a social event (as well),” he stated. “We are looking for serviceminded people in the area. We want to, as a club, continue to grow and build more service-oriented ways to provide help to the community.” For more information about the Gap Town Clock Lions Club, readers may visit w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / g a p lionsclub.

But, certainty, we don’t have (those) requirements to join. In addition, Hurricane Isaias passed across the mid-Atlantic during the days of the show and sale, resulting in a two-day power outage at the facility where the event was held. Power was also out at nearby homes and businesses. “That did not stop the event,” said MacCauley. “With the ingenuity of several adults, generators were brought in and the show arena was lit for the market hog show on Tuesday evening. For the sale on Wednesday, additional generators were brought in to ensure an adequate, stable power supply for the computer systems to run the sale.” Ed Keeney of Red Lion placed the youths’ market goats, breeding sheep, market lambs, breeding heifers and market steers on Aug. 3, with Drew Cashman of Elverson judging the youths’ market hogs on Aug. 4. The livestock sale on Aug. 5 was comprised of 118 beef steers, hogs, lambs and goats generating $106,000. The Grand Champion Market Steer, exhibited by David Bell of Nottingham, was purchased by Herr Foods of Nottingham. The meat from the steer was then donated by Herr Foods to the House of His Creation, an organization that provides housing and support to women in need.

According to Feeding America, the coronavirus pandemic has caused even more families across the country to struggle with hunger. Throughout September, the Giant Company is inviting customers to share a picture of their family connecting over a meal on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. For each picture shared with #ForTodaysTable and #GIANT, the Giant Company will donate 100 meals to neighbors in need, with a goal of donating 1 million meals through Feeding America by the end of September. Solid Rock Youth Ministries in Quarryville. This year’s beneficiary has not been selected yet. Community members are also invited to join Encounter Church for worship services on Sundays at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Children’s ministry for nursery through fifth grade is offered during both services, and a junior high group for students in sixth through eighth grades meets during the first service. “Cultivating a Revival Culture” is the current theme for the services. thing interesting is welcome, as the motto is “if you want to drive it or push it, you can bring it.” Osborne noted that one year featured an 18wheeler, and another year’s showpiece was a recreational vehicle. “One guy brings an old Plymouth pickup truck that hasn’t been restored. It’s the kind with a wooden box on the back. It’s one of my favorites,” he added. Typically, participants set up lawn chairs near their vehicles to hang out and answer attendees’ questions, or they walk around and talk with others. “We have a really good time,” Osborne remarked. “People enjoy it because it’s really laid back. It’s a community gettogether for enjoyment.” The church provides background music and free refreshments. There is no charge to participate or attend the show, but the organizers still receive offers of donations. In those instances, they usually suggest a charitable cause to support,

The Giant Company will also donate a total of $500,000 to 20 local food banks and pantries across four states to provide funding to address the increased need. Recipient food banks include Blair County Community Action Program, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Chester County Food Bank, Downtown Daily Bread, Dubois Food Pantry, Family & Community Services of Delaware Co., Helping Harvest Food Bank, Lebanon County Christian Ministries, Loaves and Fishes, Manna on Main Street, Maryland Food Bank, New Hope Ministries, Perry County Food Bank, Philabundance, Project Share, Second Harvest, Sharing Excess, Water Street Mission and York County Food Bank. Throughout September, customers can donate at the registers across all Giant and Martin’s stores. Members of Choice Rewards can also donate points to benefit their local food bank. Beginning in September and continuing through early 2021, the Giant Company’s reusable bag program is focused on hunger. With each bag retailing for 99 cents, 50 cents from the sale of each goes to local food bank partners. Through Thursday, Sept. 24, whenever customers buy $20 in participating products from a variety of food manufacturers, $5 will be donated on their behalf to Feeding America. Readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com to learn more about the Giant Company’s ongoing hunger relief efforts, which include its signature Meat the Needs program, which has donated more than 10 million pounds of meat that would otherwise have gone unsold to food banks.

Sheetz recently announced that Sheetz For the Kidz, an employee-driven charity supporting underprivileged children, raised a record-setting $839,460 during its annual month of in-store fundraising in July. This is an increase of $205,391 from last year’s donation. The current pandemic has created a coin shortage in the U.S., which has directly impacted Sheetz. As a result, during July customers had the option to donate the extra change that they would normally receive on a transaction to Sheetz For the Kidz. Each Sheetz store then rang these donations through the register and directed them to the charity. With 100% of all donations directly supporting local children, Sheetz For the Kidz provides children in need the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with gifts such as new toys, clothes and other basic needs. Brandywine Hospital Launches Residency Program The four-year accredited general psychiatry residency program includes both didactic and clinical curricula. The didactic curriculum and supervisory experiences emphasize a wellrounded approach to psychiatry with a focus on psychotherapy as a critical part of the skillset of every psychiatrist. The clinical curriculum includes a mixture of training in different areas of expertise over the four years, including internal medicine, adult neurology, emergency services and behavioral health. During the first and second years, residents rotate through a variety of inpatient settings, including time spent at Brandywine Behavioral Health, with one-month rotations on each of the four units - general adult, mood disorders, geriatric and eating disorders. The program also in-

cludes rotations at other training sites involved with this residency program. The third year is spent entirely in the outpatient setting. The fourth year includes a mixture of time spent on clinical activi-

ties for ongoing care of their outpatients, inpatient “chiefships” and electives. To learn more information about the program, readers may visit www.brandywine.tower health.org/academics.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ (DMVA) commitment to provide benefits to the state’s nearly 800,000 veterans during COVID-19 has yielded stronger collaboration with county and federal advocates. For veterans, filing for state and federal benefits often begins with meeting with their county director of Veterans Affairs. The DMVA has provided counties with extra assistance responding to veterans to assure their needs are met during the pandemic. This has been done mostly

A complete list of county directors and their contact information can be found at www.dmva.pa.gov/veterans affairs/Pages/Outreach-and-Re integration/County-Directors .aspx. If a county director is not available due to a county office closure, veterans may contact the DMVA at 800547-2838. The DMVA also collaborated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to

host two Pennsylvania-specific virtual town hall meetings that saw nearly 100,000 veterans and family members participate. Thanks to these events, veterans across the commonwealth were able to receive important information regarding their benefits during the pandemic. Information about how to apply for federal VA health care benefits can be found by going to www.va.gov/HEALTH BENEFITS/apply/. In addition to connecting with a county director or an accredited veteran service organization,

Pennsylvania’s veterans are encouraged to sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry, an extremely helpful, free tool that electronically delivers timely information about the many state benefits, programs, and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members, and people who work with veterans can sign up by computer or mobile device at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. For more about the DMVA, readers may visit www.dmva .pa.gov or follow www.face book.com/padmva or www .twitter.com/padmva.
