Masquerade Party And Dance To Benefit Parish By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The community is invited to enjoy the Masquerade Benefit Party and Dance on Saturday, Sept. 22, to benefit Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. The adults-only event will be held at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg, from 7 to 11 p.m. The evening will feature live music by Ol’ 422, a classic rock band. There will be a professional photographer on hand to capture memories, as well as a photo booth where attendees can take their own pictures. Hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served, and there will be a buffet-style cheese/meat table and desserts. Each ticketholder will also receive a complimentary beverage. The event is envisioned as a masquerade party, and everyone is encouraged to wear a mask. People may bring their own, or masks may be

purchased at the door. “We wanted a unique theme that was different - an adult theme that could be just fun and entertaining,” said organizing chairperson Emily Reid. “This is our big fundraiser for this year. It’s open to the whole community; it’s not just a church function.” Each year, parish volunteers organize a different type of fundraiser to help contribute to operating costs. This year the masquerade party and dance will have an additional beneficiary, as a portion of each ticket sold will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In conjunction with that cause, cancer survivors will be recognized, and those who have died will be remembered at the event. Survivors will receive a special mask and recognition at the party. To be included, readers may contact Jenny Reece at vieve29@gmail.com. See Masquerade Party pg 6

Inviting the community to the Masquerade Benefit Party and Dance on Sept. 22 at the Schneider Parish Center in Parkesburg are (front, from left) Peggy Vincent, Lisa Przychodzien, (back) Donna Martin and Emily Reid.

Everything from fine art and quilts to pet food and pumpkins will be available to bid on at the upcoming Chester County 4-H benefit auction on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Romano 4-H Center, located at 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The 26th annual event will include a silent auction that will open at 4:30 p.m., followed by a live auction from 6 to approximately 10 p.m. Admission is free, and all are invited to attend. The silent auction will feature many products and services donated by local residents and businesses. “In our silent auction we have entries to many museums, said Amy Pippin, who is co-chairing the auction with Payton Barber. “In the live auction we will have mushrooms, wheat straw, mums, pumpkins, (gift certificates for) riding lessons and fox hunting and much more. Someone also donated a triangular shawl loom for the live auction and a spinning wheel with wool to get started. She noted that 4-H club members donate items they have gathered or made for gift baskets. For example, there will be an equine basket with horse grooming items. Pippin noted that 4-H youths will provide assistance at the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley. Food will also be available for purchase throughout the event, and offerings will include a dairy cart selling milkshakes and ice cream. “We will also have chicken sandwiches and pulled pork sandwiches and mac and cheese, Pippin said, noting that a diner in southern Chester County will prepare the food. There will also be a cash-and-carry table where people can purchase donated items directly to take home. “We started this last year for random items that did not fit into the live or silent auction, Pippin explained. “Last year we had a lot of antique items and some books. She noted that only cash will be accepted for food sales and for the cash-and-carry table. Bidders will be able to purchase auction items with cash or credit cards. Organizers are seeking donations for the auction. “We are asking for donations of any kind, said Pippin. “Past donations have included services, handmade items, antiques, gift certificates, farm products, collectibles, artwork, used and new equipment and tools. Donations may be dropped off at the Romano Center on Wednesday, Sept. 19, through Friday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support the cost of upkeep and maintaining the 4-H Center, which gives 4-H clubs a place to meet for free. “We have about five clubs a week that meet there. We also have the 4-H Fair there, said Pippin. According to Pippin, the 4-H auction used to be held at the former Tabas Hotel in Downingtown. When a pole barn was built in 1996 at the Romano Center site,

the auction was relocated. Now, it is held in the center’s new addition, which was built in 2010. “I was in the original group of 4-Hers who did fundraising for the new 4-H building, Pippin recalled. The center’s new addition contains restroom facilities and meeting rooms, as well as a large exhibition and activity area. For more information about the 4-H auction, readers may call the Chester County Extension Office at 610-696-3500. Sacred Heart from pg 1 The Oktoberfest celebration is a popular adults-only event for the community, and it is the parish’s largest fundraising event of the year. Music will be one of the big features of the Oktoberfest celebration. Live music will be provided by an authentic German band, the Alpenlaenders. There will also be performances by an authentic German dance group from the Philadelphia German Club. Authentic German food will also be a favorite feature of the evening, with a pig roast as a main course along with many other German-style dishes and beverages. Along with the food, music and fellowship, there will be live and silent auctions. Some of the featured auction items will include weeklong stays in Maine and Lake Ontario cabins, a four-night getaway at Bethany Beach and a weeklong resort stay in Massanutten, Va. There will be tickets to sporting events, including a Philadelphia Eagles game and Penn State University football game versus Maryland. There will also be a large selection of donations from local businesses to bid on, including dinner at area restaurants, rounds of golf, “stay and play” outings at various cities in the surrounding area, a private dinner for 10 cooked by an executive chef and more. “Each year it gets bigger. The music, dancing, food and fellowship make for an amazing night,” committee chair Matt Hillegass said. “The event combines the Sacred Heart Parish and community together for a great evening that impacts

the operating budget of the Sacred Heart School. We are extremely thankful for all the businesses that donate and sponsor this event. Without their support this event is not possible.” Accompanying events for the entire family were added last year and included Family Movie Night and a Family Fun Day. These activities were so popular that they are returning this year with new additions. The Family Movie Night on Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. will feature a showing of “Jurassic World” under the big tent for children in sixth grade and up. Younger children may enjoy a presentation of “Paddington” at 7:30 p.m. in the parish hall. Admission is free, and there will be snacks available for purchase. Youths should bring a sleeping bag or something to sit on during the movie. On Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., preceding Oktoberfest, there will be a Family Fun Day on the church grounds. Wristbands will be sold, permitting children to enjoy pumpkin painting, bounce houses, pony rides, hayrides and arts and crafts. New this year will be a dunk tank. Food will also be available for purchase. Oktoberfest and Family Fun Day will be held on the grounds of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 205 Church Road, Oxford. Tickets for the evening event can be found at www.shsoktoberfest.com or by calling the Sacred Heart Parish office at 610-932-5040 or the school office at 610932-3633. For more information, readers may visit the event website or www.face book.com/shsoxford.

On Sept. 5, United Way of Chester County honored local businesses and community partners at its Campaign Kickoff and annual meeting held at Penn Oaks Golf Club. Guests enjoyed lunch and networking, and award winners were commended for their enthusiasm and dedication to the United Way’s mission to support the health, education, and financial independence of each person in Chester County. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s honed,” said Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. “We will start scheduling more appointments (after the) fall, and we’re hoping to find someone to pull it. (Once it’s fully operational), I think it will be a valuable resource for the community.” The mobile unit was designed to serve three purposes. First, the traveling veterinary facility can host feral clinics on farms or in communities where feral cats live in abundance. Spay/neuter and vaccination services will be available during those clinics. “We’re trying to get a trap-neuterrelease initiative going,” Sanders said. “We’re willing to work with communities

holiday season,” Sanders said. “We do a double distribution in November and none in December so that everyone has what they need for the holidays.” The Pet Pantry regularly distributes 5,000 pounds of pet food each month. Distributions take place in Gap and Coatesville, as well as at Water Street Mission and the Pet Pantry. The organization supplies food to rescue groups on an emergency basis. The Pet Pantry also supports more than 140 cats that are available for adoption. Most of the animals live in foster homes, but a few temporarily reside at the Pet Pantry. About 15 felines are anticipated to be present at the open house. who can get out there and trap (feral cats).” Second, the mobile unit can host vaccine clinics for family pets. It is important to ensure animals are current on protection from rabies, distemper, and other viruses. Third, the brightly colored trailer will be an eye-catching addition to promotional events. It is air-conditioned, so cats that are available for adoption will be able to rest comfortably for folks to meet inside. The open house will include self-guided tours of the Pet Pantry’s headquarters, visits with adoptable cats, a meet-and-greet with canine mascot Sasha, and refreshments. Pets are welcome to accompany their owners and pose together for fall fun pictures for a fee. A limited number of Halloween costumes will be available for pets to wear in

the photos. Additional costumes may be purchased in the fully stocked thrift shop. Folks may also buy tickets for the third annual bingo fundraiser that will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Columbus Association, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster, and order their bulbs for the annual Light the Way to Meet the Need event. Bulbs may be dedicated in memory or honor of pets and people. They will be displayed at the Pet Pantry during December, and a lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. Pictures with Santa Claus will be available for a fee from 3 to 6 p.m. that day. There is no cost to attend the open house, but attendees are asked to bring dry food for dogs and cats. “It’s our opportunity to fill our shelves with the food we need to prepare for the

The PA CareerLink - Chester County office, 479 Thomas Jones Way, Suite 500, Exton, is offering expanded hours for customers on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, effective Sept. 12. On these days, the center will remain open until 7 p.m. for access to services including the Welcome Center, workshops like CPR/AED certification and soft skills training, and events like job fairs, employer panels, seasonal hiring fairs, and the United Way Financial Stability Center budgeting workshop. In addition to job seeker information, workshops, and events, PA CareerLink - Chester County offers job seekers and employers access to job training, education, and employment services. The organization’s Welcome Center provides an orientation service for customers to create a tailormade assessment for basic career, individualized career, and employment support services. It also helps to determine program eligibility and career pathway plans for county residents. According to site administrator Walter Urban Jr., more than 18,600 visitors stopped by the center last year, with 2,300 attending workshops and 2,100 participating in the Welcome Center orientation service. Upcoming workshops and events, set for Wednesdays, include an Employer Panel for Job Seekers on Sept. 26, a Customer Service Job Fair on Oct. 10, a Seasonal Hiring Fair on Oct. 24, a Soft Skills Training Workshop on Nov. 1, and a United Way Financial Stability Center Budgeting Workshop on Nov. 28. For more information about the center’s programs and services, readers may visit www.pacareerlinkchesco.org or call 610-280-1010.
