BY FRANCINE FULTON
Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL) will present the 12th annual Atglen Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attractions, which will include vendors, food,
live entertainment and children’s games, will take place at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.
While there will not be a car show at this year’s event, a new attraction will be a mobile zip line.

Those looking for a challenging run that will take them over hills, into the woods and through a creek are invited to take part in the 10th annual Dire Wolf 5-mile and 10-mile trail race on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Wolf’s Hollow County Park, 1399 Schoff Road, Atglen. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Octorara JuniorSenior High School cross-country teams.
The race, which is being presented by the Octorara Cross-Country Team Booster Club, is being facilitated by RunPA and the Lancaster Road Runners Club. Participants navigate a hilly course that is a mix of fire trail, single-track and grass surfaces with obstacles like rocks and tree roots. There is also a shallow creek crossing, which may run deeper in the event of rain.

Food, including chicken barbecue, fresh-cut french fries, hot dogs and hamburgers, will be provided by the church trustees. “The trustees will (prepare) the food, and the deacons will have a baked goods table,” noted Hahn.
Craft vendors will be set up along the perimeter of the park,
and there will be booths set up by representatives from local organizations. Other attractions will include an apple pie-eating contest, a dunk tank, a display of emergency vehicles by the Christiana Fire Company and a book giveaway by APL.

Now, as part of the church’s 300th anniversary celebration, a new tree will be planted at the location during Homecoming Sunday on Oct. 6. The tree, which is of historical significance, will be

A run for reading
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Intercourse Library, knows that prior to her employment with the organization, a 5K race with the title “Bookin’ for Books” was held. Now, the library is bringing back the event with the simple title Intercourse Library 5K.
The run will be held at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. Packet pickup and race-day registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. and last until 9:30 a.m. Runners will receive refreshments at the end of the race, and results will be available instantly.
The course, which has been laid out by Every Mountain Outdoors and RunPA, will leave from the library and travel through scenic farmland. The route is considered flat and fast with some rolling hills.
Awards will be given to the overall top male and female runners, along with the top three male and female runners in seven age groups - 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and up.
Organizers hope to raise $5,000 from race registrations and sponsorships. O’Sullivan would like to use the funds to expand library offerings. “We would like to add more programs and be open more hours,” noted O’Sullivan. Currently the

Eye-opening experience

Anita Fieldsa wants Pequea Valley-area businesses and residents to know more about the annual Paradise Lions Club Dinner in the Dark. She recalls the first time the Bank of Bird-inHand, where she works, reserved a table at the event. “The first year we had four people, and it was so much fun,” she noted. Last year, more bank employees attended. “The staff (members who attended) said it brought them together on a whole different level,” noted Fieldsa. “It’s a good team-building activity.”
The Paradise Lions Club’s seventh Dinner in the Dark will give attendees a unique opportunity to eat a meal with limited or no vision. This year’s dinner will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. In addition to the meal, there will be presentations by VisionCorps, which will benefit from the dinner. A silent auction, which will feature up to 35 items, will be held during the reception.
During the dinner, attendees will learn about the work of VisionCorps, and part of that presentation will be
education about vision loss and how different vision impairment issues impact people in their daily lives. At each table, diners will have the opportunity to experience eating with vision limitations by choosing from items they can use to change their dining experience. Items that will be available to utilize will include blindfolds, modified safety glasses, and other implements that can simulate impairments such as macular degeneration. VisionCorps will provide the basics for staging a dinner by instructing diners

The tree will be dedicated at noon followed by a luncheon and a time of fellowship.
According to pastor Alfred Wanner, the church learned about the tree from Leona Baker, president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township.
“During Community Day (in May), Leona Baker introduced me to Erik Burro of Pennjerdel House,” explained Wanner. “They had 1,000 acorns that they gathered from the Salem oak tree in

New Jersey. Of the 1,000, 750 sprouted. They have been planted all around Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. They are down to two (saplings). (Burro) will deliver the tree when we are ready to plant.”
According to www .pym.org, the website of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, a centuries-old oak tree was located at the Salem Quaker Meetinghouse. John Fenwick, who is credited as the founder of Salem, N.J., reportedly signed a peace treaty with the Lenni Lenape people living on the land in the late 1600s under the tree.
The Salem Quaker Meetinghouse held a traditional Quaker memorial service to commemorate the life and legacy of the historic Treaty Tree.

around it until it gets taller (to protect it) from deer. You also have to keep it watered.”
The tree sapling will replace the one that the church had to take down because it was in bad condition. “We had an oak tree in the cemetery, and it was supposedly at the site of the original log church,” Wanner said. “When we took it down, the center was hollow. Because of where it was located, it would have taken out a hundred tombstones or more (if it fell down).”

The winners, along with other selections, will be published in a commemorative special section appearing in the Conestoga and Garden Spot Pennysavers, as well as the Morgantown/Honey Brook and Octorara Community Couriers in early December. “They called them Penn oak trees because there were a lot of them when William Penn came here and had the original land grant,” noted Wanner. “Often, he would have treaties with the (Native Americans), and they would be (signed) at an oak tree. Penn Oak trees are dying. They are 300 years old or more. Pennjerdel wanted to get some saplings started so there would still be Penn oak trees (in the future).”
Wanner said special care will be taken to ensure that the sapling thrives. “When you plant a tree like that, you have to dig a hole bigger than the root mass,” he said. “You have to keep mulch around it and keep critters from chewing on it. Leona (suggested) a fence, but a local arborist said to add hardware cloth
Homecoming Sunday will also include the opening of a time capsule that was placed in the cornerstone of the present sanctuary sometime between 1901 and 1902. The time capsule includes a Bible, a newspaper and coins from the time period. “We have a fellow who is coming to take the stone out and chip away the mortar,” Wanner said. “We will replace the capsule with some of the original materials and also put in new items.”
Wanner encourages past congregation members to spread the word about Homecoming Sunday, particularly to those who may have moved out of the area.
“We are hoping to get a good turnout for our homecoming,” said Wanner. “Maybe there are people who have grown up in this church (who want to return). We have a lot of people scattered around the country, and we hope they can make it back that day.”

so there is a whole trail running community that takes part in races like these. It is very challenging. These are people used to trail running,” said booster club member Rachel McGinnis, the Octorara girls’ cross-country coach, noting that the school teams use the park in the summer and fall for training.
She said that some participants often walk certain portions of the course. “There are certain parts of the trail where you come down a steep hill where most people walk. Some of the more seasoned trail runners run the whole time,” she noted. “It’s very hilly. People walk up a lot of the hills.”
Last year, the event attracted about 45 to 50 participants, who were aided in their efforts by adult volunteers with the booster club and members of the boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams. Those same supports will be in place this year. “The cross-country teams are at the aid stations, where the water and goodies are, and they help with registration and setting up the course and cheering (on the runners),” said McGinnis.
While both the 5-mile and 10-mile events start at the same location, the two courses vary. “Some parts overlap, but the end is different,” said McGinnis, noting that a detailed course map can be found on the event website.
Race-day bib pickup and registration will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m., followed
by race announcements and instructions at 8:50 a.m. Both races will start at 9 a.m. At the conclusion of the races, the awards ceremony will begin at approximately 11:45 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine.
If someone breaks the 10-mile course record, he or she will receive a cash award. Zach Miller currently holds the record with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 38 seconds. “(His) is the record to beat,” said McGinnis.
The top overall male and female finishers of the 5-mile and 10-mile races will receive a special Dire Wolf Award. Awards will also be given to the top three male and top three female finishers in various age categories.
Proceeds will be used for supports such as offsetting travel costs when the teams are involved in competitions, as well as the cross-country banquet. “It offsets some of the costs for the families when we are in championship races that we travel to. It helps with (the cost) of food and the hotel,” said McGinnis, adding, “It’s our largest fundraiser.”
Those who register by Tuesday, Oct. 1, will receive a registration discount and are guaranteed a long-sleeve tech T-shirt. After Oct. 1, shirts will be offered for sale based on availability.

to envision the plate as a clock, putting meat at 12 o’clock, a vegetable at 3, and potatoes at 6. Fieldsa noted that diners may choose which implements to try and how long to try them. “It’s their choice whether to participate, or they can participate only for a minute,” she said. “(Participation) is not required.”
On the menu for the event will be baked chicken, roast beef and gravy, red skin potatoes, baby carrots, string beans, rolls and butter, and a tossed salad. Dessert will feature pumpkin and apple pies and chocolate cake. Beverages, which will be lemonade, coffee, beer, and wine. Yoder’s Catering of Gordonville will handle food service for the event. “They’re wonderful,” said Fieldsa.
Past silent auction items have included signed sports memorabilia, trips to theme parks, overnight stays, and home goods. Traditionally, themed baskets have included a chocolate basket, a fall decor basket, and a carpet cleaning kit. According to Fieldsa, organizers try to gather items that will appeal to a variety of tastes. “Last year, we had Longwood Gardens tickets and Coach and Michael Kors handbags,” she said.
More than 76 area residents attended the 2023 dinner, which raised nearly $4,000 for VisionCorps. “My goal is to get more businesses to bring more people,” said Fieldsa, who detailed the benefits of attending as including raising awareness of vision impairment issues,
team building, and raising money for VisionCorps. “It has so many benefits,” she stated.
Both individual tickets and sponsorships with recognition are available. Those wishing to attend may purchase them by calling 717-278-5482 or 717-826-2935 or emailing heather.valudes@gmail.com or afieldsa@bihbank.com.

physical fitness, teamwork, and mutual respect while offering a platform for local athletes to interact with deputies in a fun, informal setting. The initiative is part of the Sheriff’s Office’s broader efforts to strengthen community ties and showcase the human side of law enforcement, particularly prioritizing strengthening relationships with the youths in the community.
The program is open to all middle and high school athletic teams across Chester County, with each team allowed to select up to 10 athletes to participate in the competition in a single session. On scheduled dates throughout the year, teams will visit the Chester County Justice Center or assemble at their own facility, and each athlete will have the opportunity to perform a maximum bench press. The weight lifted by each athlete will be recorded and tallied for his or her team, with the highest total weight determining the winner. Each session will feature one athletic team competing against deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, with dates and times coordinated with each team’s coach. The athlete who benches the most weight will receive a small prize, and the team with the highest total weight will be recognized on the Sheriff’s Office’s social media platforms. The losing team will treat the winners to ice cream.
For more information or to schedule a Benching with Badges session, call the Chester County Sheriff’s Office at 610-344-6525 or visit www.chesco.org/5596/ Benching-With-Badges.
