Freedom 5K, Fun Run Set For Oct. 9 BY FRANCINE FULTON
Freedom Life Church invites the community to participate in the seventh Freedom 5K, as well as a fun run, on Saturday, Oct. 9. The events will take place at Salisbury Township Park, also known as Gap Park, located at 750 White Horse Road, Gap. All proceeds, including registration fees and sponsorship donations, will benefit the A21 Campaign, a nonprofit organization
whose mission is to reach, rescue and restore individuals affected by human trafficking in the Unites States and worldwide. Organizers are eager to have the fundraiser in person this year. “In 2020, it was a virtual event; people just signed up and ran on their own,” said Angie Dearolf, Freedom Life communications director. “We want people to come together for a good cause and to enjoy community again.” See Freedom 5K pg 4
Jackie Houck (center), auction co-chair, and West Fallowfield Christian School students prepare for the school’s annual Falcon Fun Run and auction. The Freedom 5K and Fun Run will take runners and walkers through Salisbury Township Park.
BY FRANCINE FULTON
est Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will present its annual Falcon Fun Run and auction on the weekend of Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1 and 2, and the community is welcome to participate. Events will begin on Oct. 1 with the third annual Falcon Fun Run during which participants will be invited to walk or run 1 mile around the WFCS campus. Registration will begin at 4:45 p.m., and the fun run will begin at 5:30 p.m. There will also be a sale of baked goods and a limited quantity of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches to purchase that evening. Those who register for the fun run will receive a T-shirt. In addition, there will be a preview
food, baked goods, themed classroom gift donation baskets, classroom projects created by the students, community donations and teacher experience donations. “One of the most exciting times is the teacher gifts. All of our teachers donate something. It may be going to a 5K with one of the teachers or lunch with a teacher,” explained Houck. “(During a past auction), one of the teachers (provided) lunch once a week for a month for a student and a friend. These are personal one-on-one experiences or things that (the teachers) made. These are special and unique opportunities for the teachers to connect with their students. This builds relationships and helps raise money for the school at the same time.”
Everything from artwork and antiques to chrysanthemums and handmade quilts will be on the auction block at the annual Chester County 4-H benefit auction, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Romano 4-H Center, located at 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The auction did not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic, so organizers are excited to be able to offer it again this year.

Gift cards will also be available to purchase at face value, and attendees will be able to bid on silent auction items, which will include sports memorabilia. Oct. 2 will feature the 40th annual live auction beginning at 9 a.m. The auctioneer will be Dave Longenecker from Petersheim & Longenecker Auctioneers, owned by an alumni family, who is volunteering his services for the day. Jackie Houck, who is event cochair along with Jen Woltman, said the auction is fast-paced and that WFCS students help out at the event. “It is a fun experience ... it gets exciting,” she said. “Some of the older (students) help show the items and deliver them to the winners.” Live auction items will include

Registration for the Freedom 5K will open at 7:45 a.m., and the timed 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in various age categories, based on a chip timing system. A modified fun run will follow the 5K, and it will not be timed. The 5K course, which will follow a trail around trees and ballfields in the park, is paved and will include lowgrade inclines and declines. “The run/walk stays in the park,” Dearolf explained. “The trail around the park is over three-quarters of a mile, so they do that four times and that equals the 5K. The fun run will be one lap.” Walkers are welcome to take part in both the fun run and the 5K. “We often have
people come with their strollers, (but) in Gap Park, they do not permit pets,” Dearolf noted. 5K participants will have access to water, fruit and granola bars. Other snacks, including cotton candy and popcorn, will be available to all at no cost. There will also be children’s activities, including face painting and games. The park also has a playground. The A21 Campaign will have an informational table set up at the event, as well as apparel for sale. “We are also growing a relationship with North Star Initiative. They have a local house for those who have been affected by human trafficking,” said Dearolf. “They provide a safe place and job training.”
Non-runners and walkers are also invited to attend the event, cheer on the participants and learn about the anti-trafficking organizations. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come together,” Dearolf added. “It’s a really good day.” To register for the Freedom 5K, visit www.freedom.life /freedom5k. Those who register before Oct. 9 will receive a discount; same-day registrations will also be accepted. A limited number of event T-shirts will be available on race day. For more information, visit the aforementioned website or www.facebook.com/freedom life.tv or call the church office at 610-593-5959. In-person activities at the library in October will include Preschool Story Time. This activity is held every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Corner. On Thursdays, Oct. 14 and 28, at 6 p.m., the Lego Club will meet in the downstairs Community Room for a free build and special projects. The real, live library bunny will be present on Tuesdays, Oct. 12 and 26, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Visitors may read a story to the bunny. WFCS from pg 1 Also as part of the fundraiser, there will a chance for attendees to win items through a random drawing. There will also be one online auction item - a trip to Chincoteague, Va. “It will include the stay at a property on the water, as well as a boating trip and a gift certificate for dinner,” said Houck. “That will be online only.” Bids will open on Oct. 2 and will close at midnight on Sunday, Oct. 3. The goal of the weekend is to raise $30,000. “This keeps the
4-H Fair from pg 2 tuition where it’s at and makes it affordable for families,” said Houck, noting that last year’s fundraiser only included a virtual auction. “It’s a good opportunity for the community to get reconnected, which is one of the goals that we have since things were not in person last year.” WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information or to register for the Falcon Fun Run, visit www.wfcs.org or www.facebook.com/westfallow fieldchristianschool or call the school office at 610-593-5011.
“There may be a featured piece of art or an antique cabinet. There were handmade quilts that were gorgeous that were donated,” said Reith. “I have been a volunteer (before being named an Extension educator) and I always am amazed at the support you see from (people) around the county.” Volunteers are also needed to provide assistance on the
day of the auction. Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact Amy Pippin at amygracepippin@gmail.com or Reith at alr5762@psu.edu. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support the cost of maintaining the 4-H Romano Center, which is free to use for all the 4-H clubs in Chester County. The Romano Center contains restroom facilities and meet-
ing rooms, as well as a large exhibition and activity area. It is used during the annual 4-H Fair, along with the livestock building that houses the swine, dairy and goat exhibits. For more information about the auction, call the Chester County Extension Office at 610-696-3500 or visit www.facebook.com/ TheRomano4HCenterof ChesterCounty.

Chester County 4-H Presents Awards
Ronak Suchindra (second from left), Melissa Johnson (center), and David Gober (second from right) were congratulated by Davida Water (far left) and Toni Stuetz.
Invisalign as a ChangeMaker. Last year, as a response to the pandemic, he created Kids Connect, which links children through a free, online platform where they can share their knowledge and help others to learn skills. Suchindra said 4-H has helped him to develop his skills in robotics, critical thinking, public speaking, organiza-
tion, and time management; helped him to gain self-confidence and patience; and taught him the importance of being a good role model and helping his community. The Spirit of 4-H Award was started in 1998 by Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club. The award went to the 4-H member who demonstrated the most
spirit, enthusiasm, and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community. In 2007, Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club, with the support of the Chester County 4-H Program Development Committee, made the Spirit of 4-H Award a countywide accolade that is awarded to one Chester County 4-H member at the Chester County 4-H Fair. Club leaders with 4-H are asked to nominate one member from each club who demonstrated the most spirit, enthusiasm, and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community. Nominees are asked to complete and return an application to be reviewed by the 4-H Program Development Committee, which selects the winner. Chester County 4-H welcomes youths with various project interests to participate in its program. For more information, visit https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h.

Chester County 4-H held its Spirit of 4-H Award presentation on Aug. 12 during the Chester County 4-H Fair. Three local teens were recognized for their leadership and service to the 4-H program and their community. Melissa Johnson received the Spirit of 4-H Award, and David Gober and Ronak Suchindra were given Certificates of Achievement. Johnson, of Glen Mills, is the president of the SPARKS 4-H Club and a member of 4-H Teen Council, Golden Fleece 4-H Sheep Club, and Gum Tree 4-H Horse Club. She served as a camp counselor this summer and has helped many 4-H members with their projects. She created and led many club meetings and participated in club and county service projects. Johnson attended Capital Days and the State Leadership Conference in person and virtually attended the National Agriscience Summit. In addition, she is currently working on her 4-H Diamond Award. Johnson said 4-H has given her the skills to tackle any problem. Gober, of West Pikeland Township, is a member of Northern Chester County 4-H Horse Club. He is a leader in his club and has participated in several 4-H leadership events. Gober credited 4-H with showing him how he can impact his community and the world. He said that 4-H has allowed him to meet many people who have impacted him and his interest in helping others. He added that 4-H has influenced his goal to become a veterinarian. Suchindra, of Upper Uwchlan Township, is an active member and leader in the Clover Rovers 4-H Robotics Club. Flu Shots Now Available At Giant, Martin’s The Giant Company recently announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s instore pharmacies. Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will again offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots beginning in September. Customers can visit any instore pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. Through Saturday, Oct. 2, select Giant and Martin’s pharmacies will offer drive-up flu vaccinations where patients can pull into a spot in the designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their cars. For more information about store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times available, visit www.giantfoodstores .com/pages/tgc-vaccines or www.martinsfoods.com/pages /tgc-vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone over age 6 months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems. In addition to flu shots, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies to adults age 18 and above. COVID-19 vaccine type may vary by location. Pharmacies offering the Pfizer vaccine can administer to teens ages 12 to 17. Parental consent is required, and the parent/guardian must be on-site. The COVID-19 vaccine is administered at no out-of-pocket cost. If applicable, an appointment for the second dose will be made at the time customers receive their first dose.
