Visiting Kittens Bring Comfort To Hospice Patients BY FRANCINE FULTON
A newly dedicated marker in Christiana gives a detailed explanation about the arch bridge, which was built for the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad circa 1830.
A historical marker was recently dedicated at the site of the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad bridge in Christiana by members of the Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society, including (from left) Richard Rutledge, Glenn Kendig, Steve Himpsl and Tom Shenk.
Historical Marker Unveiled In Christiana Members of the Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) dedicated an illustrated outdoor historical marker on Sept. 12 in Christiana, commemorating the last standing stone arch bridge built by the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad, one of the earliest railroads to operate in the United States. The rail line was also used as part of the Underground Railroad. About 30 people attended the unveiling, which took place on the property of the Charles Bond Company, located at 11 Green St., Christiana. The Bond Company, recognized as the oldest continuously operating manufacturing company in Lancaster County, originally made turbines, gear reducers and metal castings, many of which were used on the railroads. The bridge spans Pine Creek, which divides Lancaster and Chester counties. “This arch bridge has been back here for the last 190 years, and it deserves the attention we are giving it,” stated NRHS vice president Glenn Kendig. “It is
architecturally and historically significant, and very few people know it exists.” The newly dedicated marker gives a detailed explanation about the bridge, which was built circa 1830. After the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad reorganized into the Pennsylvania Railroad, the tracks were removed from the arch bridge in 1854 and realigned. Prior to the installation of the marker, Randolph “Randy” Harris and Joshua Schultz, consulting historians, prepared a 20-page illustrated history of the site. According to the written document, the rail line between Columbia, Lancaster County, and the port city of Philadelphia was historically significant not only as the second railroad in the nation to offer regular passenger and freight service, but also for its role in the Underground Railroad. “Perhaps in no other location or region in America was an actual railroad used to transport freedom seekers over long distances on a regular basis,” the document states. Kendig explained that the effort to install the marker has taken
place over the last several years. “ We are constantly looking for railroad-related history to promote and preserve, and (the marker) was on our list,” said Kendig. “We had a long-range planning meeting, which Randy Harris attended, and from there we put together the proposal.” Kendig said that the marker installation is part of the group’s ongoing effort to preserve local history. “This organization goes back to the 1930s and has continually done projects from restoring locomotives and cabooses to preserving buildings,” he stated. The Lancaster Chapter is the founding chapter of the NRHS, a nonprofit organization that promotes education and the preservation of railroad history. The chapter home is a Pennsylvania Railroad freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Built in 1882, it was restored by the Lancaster Chapter to be used as its meeting place. While heath care workers traditionally use therapy dogs to provide comfort to patients, Melissa McCarron, a licensed clinical social worker, has come up with an additional way to bring joy to her hospice patients - kitten therapy. For the past several months, McCarron has picked up kittens waiting to be adopted from the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester and brought them to her workplace, Holisticare Hospice in Berwyn. At first, McCarron brough her therapy dog, Pearl, to visit with the patents, often dressing the chihuahua in little outfits. “Her personality is so mild-mannered, and she is very loving,” McCarron recalled. “I knew she would be a

Local author Iris Gray Dowling of Cochranville has combined her background as a teacher with her love of nature to write a new picture book for children titled “Toads: Friends You Never Thought You Had.” The book’s illustrations, which explain the life cycle of the toad and detail the differences between frogs and toads, were drawn or photographed by Dowling, along with other family members and friends who live in the area. “The two children in the story start out with comparing a frog and a toad because one of the boys wants to take (the animal) he thinks is a frog to a frog race and the other says, ‘It’s not a frog; it’s a toad,’” explained Dowling. “I consider (the book suitable) for kindergarten through elementary school students. It’s definitely suited for older people to talk with their children about.” According to Dowling, frogs have longer legs than toads and smooth or slimy skin.
Toads are generally brown and have short legs and bumpy skin. “Frogs are mostly commonly found around water. If you don’t have water, you are seeing a toad,” Dowling noted. “(In the book), I drew pictures of the frog and toad and put facts on the page so people could see the difference.” The book also explains the life cycle of toads, from eggs to tadpoles to the adult toad. “Toads are a true friend of the gardener, and more appreciation needs to be shown to them for the job they do in getting rid of pests,” Dowling noted. She said that the book took at least a year to write. “Believe it or not, this is version No. 23. My grandson, Robert, who is 24 years old, helped me with the story. I read it to him and he listened again (and again) after changes,” Dowling said. “I gave him credit as being my writing assistant. He also helped me with the computer.” Dowling’s latest book is one of several she has written about nature. “I am interested

in nature and have always been,” Dowling said. “In 2012, I wrote ‘Nature Stories With a Twist.’ I have done a book on butterflies and the praying mantis.” Dowling shared that part of her reason to write about nature is to encourage children and youths to appreciate the world around them. “I want to motivate people to get out and look and see what’s out there,” she said. “In this day and age, as a former teacher, I believe kids are doing too much in the house and not getting outside. They need to see nature more. That is one of my main aims. “ Dowling was born in Upper Oxford, went to an Upper Oxford one-room school and graduated from Oxford High School and West Chester University, earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education. She was a teacher for more than 25 years in Chester County elementary schools and has done homeschool evaluations for the Pennsylvania Accreditation

The members of the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) know that good records are key to a successful outcome, and they are depending on this concept for the annual turkey supper set for Saturday, Oct. 10. “We like to take notes after each event and plan for the next year,” said MOPW member Debbie Hoover. “The notes from last year said to plan for 500 (meals).” In previous years, between takeout orders and on-site diners, the MOPW served about 400 meals. Last year’s turnout was so good that the organizers recommended increasing capacity. While they are doing just that, safety guidelines for mitigating

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have

minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global nonprofits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. a nonprofit, and we get no government funds because the preserves are on private property,” Werner explained. “(Fundraising) is a way to help support the preserves and make them beautiful places for people to visit.” Werner noted that the preserves have seen an increase in use during the pandemic. “At ChesLen, our visitation is up three or four times, and we had to hire additional staff to coordinate parking and open a huge field for parking,” she said. “Our preserves never closed during the pandemic. People were flocking to open spaces, and with extra time on their hands - parents not working and kids not in school - the number of visitors has skyrocketed.” Natural Lands owns 19 preserves and one public garden. All are open free of charge. In addition to the ChesLen Preserve, local sites include the Binky Lee Preserve in Chester Springs, the Crow ’s Nest Preserve in Elverson, the Stroud Preserve in West Chester and the Sadsbury Woods Preserve in Coatesville. A complete list of locations is available at www.natlands.org/visit. For more information or to register for the ChesLen Chase, readers may visit www.natlands.org/Chase2020. Both trail runners and road runners or walkers are welcome to register on Team Dirt or Team Asphalt. Runners and walkers can choose their own race length, pace and location. The virtual event replaces the ChesLen Chase normally held at the ChesLen Preserve in Coatesville, a 1,300-acre property. “Every year for the last seven years we hosted a ChesLen Chase, (but) since we can’t gather 600 people together safely, we are hosting the virtual race,” said Kirsten Werner, senior director of communications for Natural Lands. “People can walk or run or hike on their own treadmills, in their neighborhood or on trails at the Natural Lands nature preserves.” After completing the chosen distance, runners and walkers are asked to enter their results online. “Since it’s an honor system and people are running on trails versus asphalt, there will be no prizes,” Werner noted. “Instead, we are celebrating people that go the distance, and every registrant gets a race T-shirt, a medal, a Team Dirt or Team Asphalt sticker and virtual bib. The shirts are cute because they have masks on them.” All proceeds will benefit Natural Lands and its mission to save open space, care for nature and connect people with the outdoors. “We’re

good match for a lot of my patients, especially ones that are more socially isolated. Because of her size, she would climb in their beds, so it was some extra TLC.” When the pandemic began, McCarron decided it might be easier to bring kittens into the hospice facility instead. She coordinated the visits with the SPCA, where she volunteers as a pet photographer. “I approached the SPCA and they loved the idea and gave me permission,” she said. “The kittens have been easier to transport. They are quieter and cuddlier. Many of the older folks are fragile, so I have to be mindful of that as well.” The hospice facility encourages pet visits, which is especially important during COVID-19. “I love working with my patients, and it makes my heart hurt when they are sad,” McCarron shared. “I have seen more people decline from the social isolation and not being about to see family and friends and eat in the dining room. It is so detrimental not to have that interaction. I was trying to come up with something to bring them joy.” She pointed out that two of her patients in particular especially love cats and both of them immediately perk up when a kitten is brought to their rooms. “One of the older ladies wasn’t feeling good, and when I brought the kitten out, she said, ‘I am feeling better already.’ She snuggled with the kitten for an hour and she was so happy,” McCarron said. She noted that the visits are good for the kittens as

well, noting that the outings with the kittens are limited to three hours. “It’s helpful for the kittens because a lot of them are not socialized,” she said. “It gets them used to being handled by a person.” McCarron plans to continue the visits with the kittens on an ongoing basis. “It’s so gratifying to see the joy that a kitten can bring; it’s amazing,” she stated. “Even if you are not a cat person, kittens are so cuddly and cute. They purr and love on you.” McCarron encourages the public to support the Brandywine Valley SPCA by volunteering, adopting pets or making a financial donation. “We just rescued 182 cats from a hoarding situation in Delaware,” she said. “Believe it or not, these cats are so sweet and loving, but a lot of them need medical attention.” For more details about the Brandywine Valley SPCA or to view adoptable kittens and other pets, visit www.face book.com/BrandywineSPCA or www.bvspca.org.
Dinner from pg 4 the coronavirus have resulted in the MOPW planning to serve the meal entirely via takeout. A drive-through line will be set up around Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing until sold out. The meals will include roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, corn, mashed potatoes, rolls and butter, pepper cabbage, applesauce, cranberry sauce,
Annette Roland of Music for Everyone (left) and Grace Julian of The Edible Classroom manned their tables at the 2019 Gifts That Give Hope Fair. The 2020 fair will be held as a virtual event on Dec. 5. and whoopie pies. MOPW members prepare most of the food. “We peel our own potatoes, cook our own turkey, make our own pepper cabbage, and make our own stuffing and gravy,” Hoover commented. “The corn is homegrown. We husked and froze it ourselves.” Although labor-intensive, handling the majority of the prep allows the MOPW to realize a greater profit on the dinner. “The women’s association is very mission-oriented. This is a way that we can raise money for missions,”
Hoover explained. The MOPW prefers to use the funds locally. The group contributes to Boy Scout Troop 87, which is chartered by MOPC; Flowing Oil community meals; Solid Rock Youth Ministries; and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. It also purchases Christmas gifts for residents at the Ware Presbyterian Village and provides financial gifts to families as needs arise. For more information about the turkey supper, call MOPW member Shirley Miller at 717-786-3690.
