Ernstes, tenor; and Justin Beck, bass. Berdos noted that Ziglar and Beck are soloists at the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, with which Berdos is also involved. Earlier this year, Berdos hosted rehearsals for a mass choir that performed at Ocean Grove. “I pulled people that I know (as soloists). Since I’m new to the area, I don’t know soloists here,” Berdos said. “I’m putting out an appeal to local people to join us in the chorus, and in the process, I’ll get to know new soloists.” He added, “It gives audiences new voices to hear, and that’s good too.” Some singers who have participated in Berdos’ previous “Messiah” productions will join the chorus for the performance at Memorial UMC, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. “(They) are coming from New Jersey and

Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) worship director Tom Berdos will direct the choir and orchestra, as he did many times when he lived and worked in New Jersey. Berdos started his employment at Memorial UMC in January 2019. “We had a lot of participation, enthusiasm, and joy,” Berdos said of his previous productions. “I hope the Lord blesses (this one) and that happens.” Berdos has contracted about 20 professional musicians to accompany the singers. Soloists with professional opera careers will include Monica Ziglar, soprano; Hanne Ladefoged-Dollase, mezzo; Brian

Gifts Of Joy Seeks Christmas Donors By Ann Mead Ash

“We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the See Gifts Of Joy pg 2

Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHALC, provides Individual Education Program (IEP) advocacy and educates students on depression during mental health talks. Support programs include Compeer Lancaster, Community Support Programs, and other support groups, which Leckow noted provide socialization as well as help with specific problems. “Support groups are an alternative or supplement to counseling, where (patients) can talk to peers who are in the same situation,” said Leckow. Education services provided by MHALC include a wellness academy that features a variety of speakers, school-based training, and a partnership with Lancaster County Prison that helps connect inmates to support in prison and after they are released. MHALC strives to stop the progression of mental illness in individuals within the county. “We try to prevent people from coming to a desperate hopeless place,” said Leckow. “ We are working for every counselor and service provider out there (to help connect patients with long-term support).” Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. 2018 holiday season. “One of the things that is important is that people have that hope during the holidays from knowing that someone cares,” said McDevitt. MHALC is looking toward Christmas 2019 with hopes that more churches, youth groups, businesses, families, and other organizations and individuals will get involved in the Gifts of Joy program. MHA representatives will give individual or group donors a list of items a patient has requested. Many requests are for items that meet basic needs such as batteries, socks, or a phone charger. Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with MHALC, noted that for those fighting mental health issues, loneliness is often a problem. “Mental health (issues) can be very isolating,” remarked Leckow, adding that patients may have lost supporting relationships during the struggle. “(Patients) might not have that social connection to celebrate the holidays the way we might,” said Leckow. McDevitt agreed. “Many may feel forgotten,” she said. “It’s a time when you see so much depicting togetherness, family, friends, and holiday parties.” McDevitt said that the holidays are a time when many residents are looking for ways to give. “At Christmas, the community is especially generous,” she said. “So many of us are full of gratitude, and we want to give back. This is an opportunity for people to support (other members of the community).” MHALC provides services to area residents struggling with mental illness issues and their families in three main areas

The commissioners presented a check for $15,000 to the nonprofit’s executive director, Glenda Brion. The funds are part of the county’s annual appropriations to organizations and nonprofits and will be used by Community Warehouse Project to continue providing its furniture “upcycle service to county families and individuals. The community is invited to a free cancer awareness event sponsored by Our Journey of Hope Cancer Care Ministry at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester, on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. The featured speaker will be Dan Wheeler, former QVC host and author of the book “Hurricane of Love,” in which he details the journey that followed his wife’s diagnosis with stage 4 cancer. After her death, he resigned from QVC and started the ministry Fearless Faith with two longtime friends. Wheeler will be telling the story described in his book about how his strong faith got his family through their most difficult challenges. The program is not just for those dealing with cancer, but also for anyone facing trials in life. There will be a free dinner before the event at 5:30 p.m. For more information, readers may email pastor Lin George at ourjourneyofhope@grovechurch .org or call 610-696-2663.

Gifts That Give Hope Fair To Move To New Location

This year, the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair is moving to a new location. The 12th annual event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup

established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase in-home dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees

to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. To learn more, readers may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org/ lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

“Amen.” Berdos anticipates working through three choruses at each rehearsal. He is prepared to work with singers with a range of experience. “My job is to find the sweet spot so that everyone leaves the rehearsal having accomplished something and feeling good about it,” Berdos remarked. “I do try to keep the rehearsals upbeat and enjoyable. Yes, it’s complicated classical music, but we have enough time to learn it.” Berdos would like to make this production an annual event, but that will depend upon the success of this performance. “I’m hopeful this will make their Christmas special - both performers and audience

members,” Berdos said. “(I hope they) make it part of celebrating Jesus the Messiah in their own lives and in their own churches. We’re a church that wants to bring glory to God. We’re excited about it, and we’d like to offer it to the community.” Tickets for the performance will go on sale on Friday, Nov. 1. They may be purchased by visiting www.quarryville.church or by calling the church at 717-7862941. Seating in the auditorium will be limited to about 300 people, so Berdos advised purchasing tickets early. Singers who would like to join the chorus or need information may email Berdos at tom@ quarryville.church.
