Cruisin’ in Christiana

Borough to present first car show

The Borough of Christiana will present the Cruisin’ in Christiana Car Show on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 17 Green St., on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House. Registration will open at 1 p.m., and the show will take place from 2 to 5 p.m.

A challenging course

“Itis beautiful and fun, but it’s definitely a challenging race,” said Lee Ann Johnson, president of the Octorara JuniorSenior High School Cross-Country and Track and Field Booster Club, when describing the upcoming trail race that the club is presenting as

a fundraiser for the Octorara cross-country teams. “Most of the (participants) are serious, dedicated runners.”

The ninth annual Dire Wolf 5- and 10-mile trail race will take place on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Wolf’s Hollow County Park, 1399 Schoff Road, Atglen. The race, which will be held rain or shine, is being facilitated by

RunPA and the Lancaster Road Runners Club. According to event organizers, runners will travel a course that will consist of hills, rocks, roots, a rugged downhill switchback and a shallow creek crossing, which may run deeper in the event of rain.

Race-day bib pickup and registration will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m., followed by race announcements and instructions at 8:50 a.m. Both the 10-mile and 5-mile races will start at 9 a.m. At the conclusion of the races, the awards ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m.

If someone breaks the 10-mile course record, he or she will receive a cash award. Zach Miller currently holds the record with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 38 seconds.

The top overall male and female finishers of the 5-mile and 10-mile races will receive a special Dire Wolf Award. Awards will also be given to the top three male and top three female finishers in various age categories.

On-course water and snacks, as well as post-race refreshments, will be provided. “We have three separate stations set up throughout the park,”

said Johnson. “We make sure that there are (sports beverages) and water. We also have pickles in cups and some other snacks. Even as they run past the aid stations, they can grab something to eat and drink.”

Members of the Octorara crosscountry teams, who utilize the trail as part of their training, will be stationed throughout the course to offer guidance.

“They help direct the runners,” said Johnson, noting that some students also make signs to encourage runners.

“As the race concludes, they make sure that they are counting the racers as they go past (to make sure everyone is accounted for.)”

Proceeds from the event will be used for items such as warmup suits for the cross-country athletes and to pay travel costs when the teams are involved in competitions.

To register for the race or for more information, visit www.run signup.com and search for “Dire Wolf 10 & 5 Mile Trail Run.” A link to register is also available at the “Octorara XC and Track & Field” Facebook page. Those with questions may email race director Jason Logue at jasonlogue@comcast.net.

Proceeds from the event will benefitfour nonprofit organizations: the Christiana Fire Company, the Christiana Historical Society, Moores Memorial Library and the Christiana Lions Club.

“The library will have a table with grab bags for the kids with coloring books and crayons,” noted Shawnie Betts, a member of the Christiana Lions Club and one of the car show organizers. The fire company will provide attendees with an opportunity to win prizes, and representatives from the Lions Club and the historical society will be on hand throughout the day.

Betts said that all makes and models of vehicles are welcome at the first-time event. “We would love to have tractors or old fire trucks,” she said. “We will have an ugly duckling prize and a fan favorite (as voted on by attendees). “Christiana Mayor Mark Carner does custom interior work, and he is sponsoring a prize for best (car) interior.”

Music will be provided by The 45 Guy. “He will spin vinyl records, and he’s a car guy,” said Betts.

Food trucks that will be on hand include Butch’s BBQ, which will offer hamburgers, french fries, sausage sandwiches and pork barbecue sandwiches, and the Softie Whirl ice cream truck.

Betts explained she came up with the idea to hold a car show after visiting with Christiana borough manger Bobbi Maser. “Bobbi said we should offer more (activities) for the community,” said Betts, who is the manager of Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard. “We brought the idea to the mayor and borough council for approval. They thought it would be good use of the space.”

An organizing committee has been planning the event for the past several months. Jenn Semple, the borough’s

Betts said that community events are what make small towns so attractive to residents, citing the annual Christmas in Christiana event. “That is what sold me on this town. I love a close-knit community,” she said. “With Christmas in Christiana, (it makes) you believe in Santa all over again.”

New rabbit and cavy club launches

Chester County 4-H will introduce its new Wild Clover Rabbit and Cavy Club in October. This club is open to members ages 5 to 18. The meetings will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, starting Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Rabbits and cavies (guinea pigs) are suitable animals for many 4-H members who do not have enough land to own livestock. The club is intended to teach members the proper care and management of these animals. At meetings, club members will learn about handling and grooming techniques, proper care and nutrition, husbandry practices, breeding, showing and maintaining record books. Animal ownership is not required.

Registration is requested at https://4h.zsuite.org. For further information on the 4-H program in Chester County, contact the Penn State Extension Office at 610-696-3500.

William Penn

Submitted by Leona Baker, HistoricalSocietyofSalisburyTownship

William Penn was granted land in the American colonies by King Charles II of England in 1681. Penn and his companions explored the area and made treaties of peace with the indigenous people.

By 1701, European pioneers had established firm routes to the unknown lands of what became Lancaster County. Penn felt the need to reestablish a firm relationship with the Delaware branch of the Susquehannock Native Americans, which had settled in what is known today as Columbia. Penn travelled west on the Minquas Trail from Philadelphia. There is a sign in Gap that commemorates the trail. (The sign is near McDonald’s on Route 30.)

The east-west Minquas Trail and its intersecting Octoraro Trail had been travelled for hundreds of years. Tribes often came together there for events. So popular was this area as a meeting place, the local tribes established a small garden of

squash, corn and beans, which served as a base for meals for those who rested here. It became a natural travel lane for the immigrating European pioneers who called it Gap-in-the-Hills.

Penn and his party were greeted there by several high ranking members of the Delaware tribe whose intent was to escort Penn’s party to Columbia. The tired travelers are reputed to have camped the night near where the Gap Post Office is today. Legend says their native hosts served a meal from the garden nearby. Entertainment for the night would have been Native American dancing, which Penn is reported to have joined. The cave Penn presumably slept in that night was covered up when Chestnut Street was paved in the early 20th century.

In the morning, before heading for Columbia, Penn and the chiefs signed a parchment peace agreement and Penn was presented with a belt of promised loyalty. It is believed that the flat rock on which that treaty was signed is today

called Penn’s Rock and stands at the south end of Chestnut Street.

Traditionally made of purple quahog clam and white mollusk shells tumbled by the sea into round beadlike form, the beads on the belt were woven together in a set pattern to signify strength and friendship. The original belt presented to William Penn in 1701 is carefully preserved in the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg today.

At the 300th anniversary celebration of Penn’s trip through Gap in 2001, a re-enactor portraying William Penn returned to sign the peace treaty in a tricentennial ceremony

held at the Salisbury Community Township Park. At the event, a representative of the Susquahannocks presented him with a belt. This time, the belt was a replica. The original 1701 weaving was made of leather strips instead of today’s thread, and the beads were more cylindrical. The belt and the accompanying card were made by Salisbury Elementary School fifth-grader Chris Johnson. The belt features more than 3,000 beads. The belt is now in the Historical Society of Salisbury Township’s artifacts collection.

Church to host guest speaker

Pastor Kurt Schenk of New Beginnings Church of the Cross, 1 Penn Ave, Christiana, has announced that Bree Keyton of Worshiping Warriors will speak at the church on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. The program is free and open to the community.

Keyton’s primary ministry focuses on rescuing Pygmies in the Democratic Republic of Congo from certain death. According to www.worshipping warriorsfellowship.com, she has rescued more than 70,000 Pygmies, bought them land and built them villages in safer areas.

Keyton is the author of several books, including “Healing Scriptures” and “Heart and Soul Surrender.” Her musical CD, “Heat and Soul Surrender Music,” received nationwide airplay for three years.

Keyton travels the world preaching the gospel. She has been in 40 countries and five continents, ministering in arenas, churches, music halls, prisons, malls, parks, high schools, colleges, retreats, crusades, seminars, confer-

ences, conventions, coffee houses and outdoor festivals.

Keyton’s talk is being held in lieu of the church’s Wednesday night Bible study.

New Beginnings Church of the Cross holds Sunday worship at 10 a.m. A free smorgasbord-style meal is served following the service.

A Christian open mic night is held at 6 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Along with hearing hymns and testimonies offered by members of the church, community members are also welcome to join in the program by singing or sharing their faith testimonies. All performances must be Christian-themed.

The gray, stone church is located between Newport Avenue and Pine Street, two blocks from the light at Route 41 and Pine Creek Drive.

For more information, call 484-678-2483 or visit www.facebook.com/New BeginningsCross. Sunday sermons can be viewed on the church’s YouTube channel. A link to the channel can be found on the Facebook page.

What certain noises may indicate about your car

Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago.

The cars of today are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car. Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.

- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in the pockets. That mistake is immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.

- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the universal joint, often referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system

The effects of infrequent driving on a vehicle

that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. U-joints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the U-joint needs to be addressed immediately.

- Squealing sound: A high-pitched squealing sound typically means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.

- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.

Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.

Driving causes a certain measure of wear and tear on a vehicle. Whether a vehicle is used primarily for commuting or as a vessel to take travelers to places unknown, wear and tear is inevitable. On the opposite end of the spectrum, individuals may not realize that failing to drive their vehicles regularly also can affect performance. Here’s a closer look at what can happen when vehicles sit idle for lengthy periods of time.

The battery can lose its charge. The battery in a vehicle is still being used even if the car isn’t running. Batteries power various components in

a car, such as the vehicle computer, phone chargers and more. If the engine does not turn over and help to recharge the battery, the battery will eventually die. People who drive infrequently may want to consider a trickle charger that’s plugged in during periods of non-use.

Tires also can be affected, as they may become prone to dry rot. The rubber in the tires can dry out and become brittle, causing splits and cracks to form. Driving with rotting tires can cause tires to deflate. Also, when tires are not used frequently, the weight of the car can put continual pres-

Warning signs that brakes are faltering

Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.

Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.

Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a high-pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.

sure on the same parts of the tires, leading to flat spots. Tires also can lose pressure if they sit too long.

Rust and corrosion can occur. There is still plenty of metal in modern vehicles. A vehicle that has been exposed to salt or rain or one that is stored in a moist climate can be susceptible to undercarriage or engine rust. This rust may cause damage that’s not easily repaired.

Additionally, a vehicle parked in one location for a long time could be a target for bird droppings, fallen berries, sap and other substances that are potentially harmful to the paint. Leaving a car or truck out in the sun also means UV rays can cause clear coat over the paint to oxidize, producing blotchy or peeling spots.

The brakes may also suffer. When vehicles are left to sit, corrosion could build up on the rotors, and the brake pads may become less flexible. Moisture also may seep into brake lines, causing issues with pressurization of brake fluid. Each of these factors adds up to brakes that do not work properly, which is a big safety hazard.

Oil and other fluids may lose efficacy. Various fluids can go stale in a vehicle if it isn’t regularly driven. Gasoline also may develop condensation, which can reduce efficiency and performance. Taking short trips helps avoid this issue.

Infrequent driving can cause damage to a vehicle, but many potential issues can be avoided by driving vehicles more often.

Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.

Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.

Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.

How to conserve fuel without giving up driving

In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.

Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.

Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.

Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.

Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.

Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.

Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.

These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.

Car show to benefit Kacie’s Cause

The 10th annual Cars for Kacie car show will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. In addition to the displays of vehicles and motorcycles, the event will include food, a silent auction, children’s activities and demonstrations by local police and first responders.
