Upward Basketball To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH

Tammy Shondelmyer, director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, is happy to invite area children to take part in Upward Basketball during the fall and winter of 2021-22. “We strive to engage in fun competition that provides instruction for kids with all levels of experience,” said Shondelmyer.

Activities planned during the Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire include face painting (left photo), an owl show by Dawn White (center photo) and a potions class.

Atglen Library Announces Return Of Wizard Faire BY FRANCINE FULTON

fter an absence in 2020, Atglen Public Library (APL) will again host its Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 121 Main St., Atglen. The event, which will feature live entertainment, children’s activities and shopping, is open to people of all ages, and attendees are encouraged to dress in costume. There is no admission fee, and most of the activities are free. According to APL trustee Erin Metzler, one of the event organizers, the Faire is a celebration of wizard-themed fantasy literature. “Di-Atglen Alley is a spoof of Diagon Alley, a wizarding shopping district in London from the popular book series,” she said, adding, “Even if you are not a diehard fan, you will still have a fantastic time.” Upon arrival, attendees will receive a program detailing the activities. “We have a grand entryway with a greeter who hands out the programs. The program has our sponsors’ information included and it tells people everything there is to do at the festival,” Metzler said. The Faire will include a Wizard Academy, where youths can take a

“There are so many fun things to do at the Faire that are free for everybody. It is important to us as a public library,” Metzler said. “We don’t want anyone to feel excluded because they can’t afford to (participate).” The centerpiece of the Faire will be the stage, which will feature a live owl show by Dawn White from Indian Run Environmental Education Center and “Magic With Professor Snape.” New this year will be dance performances by Andrea’s School of Dance and live music by the Dtown Ukesters. There will be a costume contest at 1 p.m., and free trivia games about the Harry Potter book series. New this year is the Cursed Object Quest, a combination of a

scavenger hunt and escape room. “The only thing that we can’t do this year that we have done in the past is the escape room, which is usually hosted in borough hall. We created a modified event instead of the espape room,” Metzler explained. “It’s a souped-up scavenger hunt.” Instead of a list of items to find, players will receive a clue sheet with various puzzles and riddles to solve that direct them to locations around the festival site. The activity is geared toward groups. There will be no instructions, and players will have to figure things out on their own. A nominal fee will be charged per person age 5 and over to participate. As an alternative, a free scavenger hunt will also be offered. Metzler emphasized that the Faire is a great family-friendly way to spend the day. “There are so many fun things to do at the Faire that are free for everybody. It is important to us as a public library,” Metzler said. “We don’t want anyone to feel excluded because they can’t afford to (participate).” For more information about the Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire, call APL at 610-593-6848 or visit www.facebook.com/DiAtglenAlley or www.atglenpubliclibrary.org and click on the Faire logo.

Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church in Quarryville was selected for the 2021 C. Emlen Urban Award for Renovation from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The award cited the project as a collaborative venture between Hammel Associates Architects and Arthur Funk & Sons Inc., Construction Services. The award is presented to recognize the people and their teams who preserve and adaptively reuse historic architecture. The Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church was built in 1765. The church’s building committee, Hammel Associates Architects, and a team of craftspeople from Arthur Funk & Sons worked together to renovate the 5,455-square-foot sanctuary and preserve the historic features of the church. The sanctuary renovations include opening up the balcony, re-appointing the artistic painting of the ceiling, removing and re-installing the original stained and lead glass windows in new thermally broken frames, and creating an accessible chancel. An ADA accessible restroom and a mother’s room were added, providing an additional 207 square feet to the structure.

While people may be accustomed to seeing fishing boats or sailboats on the lake at Marsh Creek State Park in Eagle, a different kind of vessel will take to the water on Sunday, Oct. 10 - a 40-foot Viking ship replica named the Norseman. The ship will be launched by members of Leif Ericson Viking Ship Inc. (LEVS), a nonprofit organization whose goal is to educate people about Leif Ericson and the Viking people, as well as to recreate the experience of traveling on water as the Vikings did 1,000 years ago. LEVS membership chairman Hildegard Lindstrom explained that in 1964, the U.S. Congress, by joint resolution, declared Oct. 9 as Leif Ericson Day. Since then, members of the Scandinavian community locally and throughout North America have celebrated the day as a special occasion, and the sail of the Norseman is always held on or near that date. On Oct. 10, the event will begin at 11 a.m. with the launching of the Norseman by costumed Viking re-enactors from the western launch area of Marsh Creek Lake. The GPS address for the location is 800 N. Reeds Road, Downingtown. At noon, there will be introductions of honored guests, as well as the reading of a proclamation from the president of the United

The Viking ship will then sail until about 2:30 p.m. Later in the day, a Leif Ericson Day dinner will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 720 E. Eagleview Blvd., Exton. Presenters are dressed in authentic Viking-style clothing and display various artifacts. The group plans to visit West Bradford Elementary School in Downingtown on Wednesday, Oct. 13. drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for competition. First- and secondgrade boys and girls play together on coed teams. Older students have separate teams for boys and girls. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, and each team will be assigned one evening a week to practice. A special Meet Your Coach Day will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, and games will be held on Saturdays from Jan. 8 through March 5. “We love our community, and we host Upward because it is an activity that brings our community together,” shared Shondelmyer. “Lord willing, it will also be a little something that can help our community move forward,” she added. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols at the times of the practices and games will be observed. Children who wish to participate may be registered at www.fbcpequea.org. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program for students in grades one through seven provided through sponsoring churches. At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. “If your child is an experienced player or brand new to the game, Upward is a place where their skills will improve with practice and encouragement,” Shondelmyer said. Registration for the program is open. It will end Tuesday, Nov. 9, and registration will be limited. Evaluation nights will be held on Nov. 9; Thursday, Nov. 11; Monday, Nov. 29; and Thursday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. each night. During the evaluation nights, the students will be sized for a jersey and asked to perform drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling

ATGLEN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH: E. Main and Dallas Sts., Atglen, PA. Joe Newsome, Interim Pastor. Join us Sundays at 11am as we preach Christ crucified, risen and coming again so all may come to a personal, saving relationship with Christ.

Aging has long been associated with hearing loss, and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders notes that age-related hearing loss can arise from changes in the inner ear as the body ages. However, hearing loss can affect people of all ages, including the very young. Some hearing losses are preventable. There are steps everyone can take to protect their hearing and reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), such as switching from earbuds to over-the-ear headphones. The Cleveland Clinic noted that over-the-ear headphones encase the ear and are often more effective at canceling outside noise. When outside noise is canceled out, wearers will not need to increase the headphone volume in order to hear their music. Listening at lower volumes is a great way to protect hearing and prevent NIHL. Audiologist Sharon A. Sandridge of the Head and Neck Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, notes that volume levels are too high on an individual’s headphones if people standing at arm’s length can hear the music. Another way to avoid NIHL is to purchase activity-specific headphones, earplugs, or earmuffs. These products are designed to block out specific noises, such as from backpack leaf blowers or hunting rifles, and could therefore offer hearing loss protection. Age-related hearing loss may not be preventable. However, individuals can protect themselves from NIHL, and efforts to do so should begin at a young age and continue throughout adulthood.
