Octorara Community Band To Present Debut Concert The newly formed Octorara Community Band will present its debut concert on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Parkesburg VFW, 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg. Admission is free, and concert attendees are asked to bring their own chairs and blankets for seating and to practice social distancing. The concert will be held rain or shine. The band is composed of both graduates and current students from Octorara Area High School and other local high schools. The group has been gathering for socially distant outdoor practice every Sunday for the past several months at the Atglen Community Park, located behind Penningtonville Presbyterian Church. More than a dozen musicians are currently in the band. According to band member Cathy Wilde Christ, one day in late March her cousin, Jim Wilde, and his son Joey were

reminiscing about Jim’s days in the Octorara Area High School marching band. They mentioned that to Christ, and she immediately thought of forming an alumni band. Christ then contacted friends who she believed would be interested in forming the band. “Jimmy and I were in the high school marching band together; he played the trumpet and I played the flute,” said Christ. “I gathered some people who were also in the band that we know, and we had a couple of Zoom meetings. At our first practice in July, we only had four people. We had 16 (musicians at practice) this past weekend.” The band is not limited to Octorara band alumni. Alumni from Avon Grove and LampeterStrasburg high schools have already joined the band, along with a few current Octorara stud e n t s a n d s o m e fo r m e r h i g h school band members from out of the area. Rebecca Olson of Parkesburg, who is a middle s c h o o l b a n d d i r e c t o r fo r t h e

Hempfield School District, has volunteered to direct the group. The band welcomes new members. “We would love people who have an interest and love of music to join,” said Christ. “If they don’t have an instrument we can try and gather one for them. The more the merrier.” The upcoming concert will have a patriotic theme to honor the veterans at the VFW. “ We will start with the national anthem and have some good patriotic marches,” said Christ. “ We are doing a song with all the branches of the military, and we will have the veterans stand up when their branch is represented. My cousin, Jimmy, will be the (master of ceremonies). He will talk about how the band started and (introduce) each song.” For more information about the band and the upcoming concert, readers may search for “Octorara Community Band” on Facebook. Musicians who would like to join the band may contact Christ at c2n2j2@gmail.com.

The Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA) will host a Halloween Movie in the Park at the Oxford Area Regional Park, 900 W. Locust St., Oxford, on Saturday, Oct. 10. Due to COVID-19, the OARA has canceled its Haunted Hayride for 2020. As an alternative, the first Movie in the Park will be held with social distancing. Attendees should bring their own blankets or chairs for seating for the outdoor showing of the movie “Hocus Pocus.” Squares will be marked out on the multipurpose field with alternating squares blocked off to maintain social distancing between families and to ensure everyone has a good view of the giant inflated screen. The park will be closed all day on Oct. 10 to prepare for the event. Gates will open at 6 p.m., and the movie will

Beale entered the independent team into an industrial league, where it played teams from New York and Baltimore, as well as the Camden Dry Docks, Bethlehem Steel, Klein Chocolates and others. The PICO Ironmen also played various teams from the Negro League and MLB teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics and Phillies and Boston Red Sox. In 2016, SEPTBA was formed by Naggy as an avenue for young ballplayers ages 8 to 13 to compete. “The lower field will stay smaller for kids ages 9 to 12, and I would like to restore the upper field to a mini stadium and a place for players ages 13 to 19,” Naggy said. Naggy, who owns The Triple Play Barn, which sells sports uniforms, learned about the history of the field through his company. “When I opened my store in Gap, people would come in and tell me about (the team) and I talked to (local historian) Gerry Treadway and he helped me out,” Naggy recalled. “I went to the library and saw the actual uniforms from the PICO team there. I approached the borough, and they gave me opportunity to manage the fields and take them over for my league.” Parkesburg residents, including Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde, are excited about the project. Virtual Race To Benefit Natural Lands Natural Lands will present its annual ChesLen Chase for Open Space this year, but due to COVID-19, the event has gone virtual. As part of the fundraiser, now called “ChesLen Chase ... All Over the Place,” participants are asked to complete 2 miles, a 5K, a 10K or a half marathon any time from Saturday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 18. Participants may also complete the Chase Challenge, which includes the 2 miles, 5K, 10K and half marathon. Both trail runners and road runners or walkers are welcome to register on Team Dirt or Team Asphalt. Runners and walkers can choose their own race length, pace and location. The virtual event replaces the ChesLen Chase normally held at the ChesLen Preserve in Coatesville, a 1,300-acre property. “Every year for the

last seven years we hosted a ChesLen Chase, (but) since we can’t gather 600 people together safely, we are hosting the virtual race,” said Kirsten Werner, senior director of communications for Natural Lands. “People can walk or run or hike on their own treadmills, in their neighborhood or on trails at the Natural Lands nature preserves.” After completing the chosen distance, runners and walkers are asked to enter their results online. “Since it’s an honor system and people are running on trails versus asphalt, there will be no prizes,” Werner noted. “Instead, we are celebrating people that go the distance, and every registrant gets a race T-shirt, a medal, a Team Dirt or Team Asphalt sticker and virtual bib. The shirts are cute because they have masks on them.” All proceeds will benefit Natural Lands and its mission

to save open space, care for nature and connect people with the outdoors. “We’re a nonprofit, and we get no government funds because the preserves are on private property,” Werner explained. “(Fundraising) is a way to help support the preserves and make them beautiful places for people to visit.” Werner noted that the preserves have seen an increase in use during the pandemic. “At ChesLen, our visitation is up three or four times, and we had to hire additional staff to coordinate parking and open a huge field for parking,” she said. “Our preserves never closed during the pandemic. People were flocking to open spaces, and with extra time on their hands - parents not working and kids not in school - the number of visitors has skyrocketed.” Natural Lands owns 19 preserves and one public garden. All are open free of charge. In addition to the ChesLen

Individuals and families looking to explore the outdoors at nature preserves located throughout the area are invited to take a challenge being issued by Natural Lands, a nonprofit land conservation organization. Those who explore all 30 of the nature preserves owned by Natural Lands, as well as Stoneleigh, a botanical garden, may collect code words at each site to receive a T-shirt that says, “Find Yourself Outside.” “Our preserves are in the eastern part of Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey,” explained Kirsten Werner, senior director of communications for Natural Lands. “We have an active promotion where we are challenging people to visit all of the preserves. There is a code word at the welcome kiosks; each (site) has a different code.

Those who mail in the form with the code words will get a T-shirt.” A link to download the form can be found at w w w. n a t l a n d s . o r g / v i s i t . Those who record all 20 code words can mail the form to Natural Lands, 1031 Palmers Mill Road, Media. Local sites include the

are scheduled for Jan. 9 and 23, Feb. 6 and 20 and March 6 and 20. “We decided to go virtual so everyone would be safe. We are hoping to get back to the church maybe in January,” said Lizzy. Lizzy’s younger sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. The goal of the dances is to provide a place where everyone could dance in his or her own way. In addition to dancing, the in-person parties included special features such as the limbo, conga lines and parachute games. Participants were also invited to play with balloons and hula hoops. The virtual dance parties do not feature the special in-person activities, but there is plenty of music and singing along and an opportunity to make song requests. Helping out at the in-person dances were volunteers,

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

LMHS Takes “Kindergarten” (The Play) Outdoors BY ANN MEAD ASH

I Timothy 4:12 reads, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.” Isabella Astuto, Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior and a member of the cast of the school’s upcoming production of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kinder-

garten,” noted a main message of the play is to not disregard the knowledge of youths. “Just because children are younger, (that) doesn’t mean there aren’t also things that kids can experience that are worthwhile to learn and know,” she said, adding that a lot of the vignettes in the play reflect that theme. “Kindergarten,” based on Robert

Fulghum’s books, examines the profound in everyday life. The show will be staged outside at the school, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 15, 16, and 17, at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets. Play director Dean Sauder said that See LMHS pg 8
