Freedom
Life Church will present the eighth annual Freedom 5K and fun run at Salisbury Township Community Park, also known as Gap Park, 750 W hite Horse Road, Gap, on Saturday, Oct. 15. The run/walk will be followed by a Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat. Participation in the Freedom 5K and fun run are not required to attend the Fall Festival.
All proceeds from the 5K and fun run will benefit two nonprofit organizations that provide assistance to victims of human trafficking. “It’s the most fun way to make a difference,” said event organizer Stacey McNutt.
Registration for the Freedom 5K will open at 7:45 a.m., and the timed 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in various age categories, based on a chip timing system. A modified fun run will follow
the 5K, and it will not be timed.
The 5K course consists of four laps around the park. The paved course will follow a trail around trees and ballfields in the park and will include low-grade inclines and declines. “(The course) is all within the parameters of the park where they currently have a walk/run path,” said McNutt. “There
will be cheer teams along the course, water stations and signage to guide our walkers/runners.” Participants will be provided with snacks, including fruit and granola bars.
The fun run, open to people of all ages, will be one lap around the park, which equates to three-quarters of a mile. All participants in the fun run

Although they may not know his real name, many people who live in the Gap and Christiana areas are familiar with “The Can Man,” a gentleman who spent every Tuesday collecting aluminum cans left on the side of the road as a way to generate income.
The community now has an opportunity to meet the Can Man, whose real name is Ralph Berkey, and wish him a happy 74th birthday during a party to be held

Birthday Party
on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Christiana Lions Club, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. People may drop in anytime between 2 and 5 p.m. Individually wrapped birthday cupcakes will be provided.
Berkey’s friend Janice Crills, who provides him with assistance, is organizing the party. “A lot of people recognize him from being on Routes 30 and 41. For years, he has pulled a wagon along the road on Tuesdays,” Crills explained. “He would cash in the cans for money.”
Berkey, an honorary member of the Christiana Lions Club, has been assisted through the years by the club, which provided him with a new wagon to collect the cans. In 2008, Lions Club members, led by Jim Groff, were able to provide Berkey with a new trailer to live in. Through donations and help from volunteers and local churches, they were also able to furnish Berkey’s new home.
Due to health issues, Berkey has
not been able to do his weekly route through Chester and Lancaster counties but is still able to get cans that are dropped off at local collection boxes.
Instead, he has been keeping busy creating art with coloring pencils. “He spends hours and hours with his coloring pencils and artwork. We have turned those pages into unique cards and bookmarks,” said Crills, noting that visitors to the birthday party will be able to purchase the items for a donation.
Although gifts are not requested, those who attend the party may bring greeting cards for Berkey to enjoy and later display in his home.
“(I want people to) come appreciate his artwork and support the local community as we celebrate his birthday. He would truly enjoy seeing the community and sharing his artwork,” said Crills. “I want him to feel appreciated and celebrated.”

Student Named Finalist In STEM Competition
Kai Unwin-Wisnosky, an eighthgrader from West Chester, is one of 30 finalists in the Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars), a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition for middle-schoolers.
Kai’s project is “Are Four ScaledDown Savonius Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines More Efficient Than a SingleScaled Wind Turbine of the Same Type?” Kai noted that he thinks his work could help to provide clean energy for some residential communities that don’t allow large turbines, as well as coastal areas that may need backup power after storms.
Offered by the Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science, Broadcom MASTERS seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators who will work toward solving the grand challenges of the future. The finalists, who were selected from a pool of 1,807 sixth- through eighth-grade applicants participating in affiliated science fairs, will each receive a cash award and will participate in Finals Week in Washing-

ton, D.C. At this competition, they will be judged on their research projects as well as their demonstration of collaboration and critical thinking skills during team challenges, emphasizing the importance and value of teamwork in STEM fields. They will vie for more than $100,000 in awards. Broadcom MASTERS also recognizes finalists’ science teachers with a one-year classroom subscription to Science News magazine and awards the finalists’ schools with cash prizes to use toward STEM activities.

Octorara Homecoming
by Octorara school groups and sports teams, school buses and fire trucks from Keystone Valley Fire Department and the Christiana Fire Company. A video of the parade can be found by visiting www.youtube.com and searching for “Octorara Homecoming Parade 2022.”
Other activities on Sept. 23 included a pep rally and the annual homecoming dance.
The school held its Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sept. 23.
The inductees were Joshua Althouse, a member of the Class of 2006, and Catherine Imms, a member of the Class of 2010, who was inducted posthumously.
Following the ceremony, principal
frompg 1
Jonathan Propper reminded the students of the significance of homecoming.
“A lot of people view this week as just a fun week with a lot of activities like pep rallies, parades and athletic contests.
However, sometimes the meaning of homecoming gets lost in the festivities,” he stated. “Homecoming is a tradition of welcoming back former students.
In our case, we are celebrating the existence of Octorara JuniorSenior High School and all who call this place home. (Returning alumni) are proud of their school and what it has become, proud of their education and most importantly, proud of you.”
