The Octorara cross-country and track and field teams are hosting a virtual 5K fundraiser through Oct. 31. One of the teams competing this year in the fall season is the junior high girls’ cross-country team (pictured).

Octorara Sports Teams To Host Virtual Run BY FRANCINE FULTON

ince this year’s Run to Victory 5 Miler and 10-Mile Trail Run at Wolf ’s Hollow Park in Atglen were not scheduled this summer due to COVID-19, the Octorara cross-country and track and field teams are instead hosting a virtual 5K fundraiser. Proceeds will be used to purchase equipment in the spring for the track and field team. The event began on Sept. 28 and will run through Saturday, Oct. 31. Individuals may register for the virtual 5K at https:// runsignup.com/Race/PA/Atglen/ OctoraraBraves5KRun. According to Heather Bishop, Octorara Junior-Senior High School Cross-Country and Track and Field Booster Club vice president, participants can run the 5K at any location

team has been competing this fall with some added guidelines. “They start (races) together wearing masks, but they are allowed to take the masks off when they start running,” Bishop said. Both individuals and family members are welcome to run the 5K. It is not necessary to reside in the Octorara Area School District to participate. “ We chose this fundraiser because it related (to track and field), and it is something different for people who have been stuck inside,” Bishop said. She added that some members of the Octorara track and field and cross-country teams have already registered to participate in the virtual 5K. For more information, readers may visit the previously mentioned website or search for “Octorara XC and Track & Field” on Facebook.

Individuals who would like to participate in the Freedom 5K should register at https://freedom.life /freedom5k. Runners, walkers and sponsors are welcome. For those who do not want to run or walk a 5K, a donate button is provide on the website. For more information, readers may call 610-593-5959 or email stacey@freedom.life. More information about the A21 organization is available at www.a21.org.

Last year’s Freedom 5K was presented by Freedom Life Church at the Salisbury Township Park. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event on Oct. 17 will be virtual.

Natural Lands Issues Outdoor Challenge BY FRANCINE FULTON

Individuals and families looking to explore the outdoors at nature preserves located throughout the area are invited to take a challenge being issued by Natural Lands, a nonprofit land conservation organization. Those who explore all 30 of the nature preserves owned by Natural Lands, as well as Stoneleigh, a botanical garden, may collect code

of their choosing. “You can run a 5K though your town or on a course and (then) post your time,” she said, noting the times will be registered on an honor system. “The website will show you who has run and what their times are and give you a spot to upload your time.” For those who do not want to run a 5K, a donate button is provided at the registration website. Bishop explained that crosscountry is a fall sport and track and field is a spring sport. “There is a girls’ and boys’ cross-country team and a junior high team, so we have students from seventh through 12th-grades,” she said. “A lot of cross-county athletes also run track and field, and we have one booster club (for both). Track and field is bigger because it has a lot of events.” She noted that the cross-country

In the past five years, Freedom Life Church has raised more than $30,000 through the Freedom 5K, proceeds of which were donated to A21, a nonprofit organization working to end human trafficking. Because of COVID-19, the event will continue as a virtual run/walk this year. The community is invited to participate at the location and time of their choosing on Saturday, Oct. 17, between 7 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. “This event has become extremely important to our church and community,” said event coordinator Stacey McNutt. “Though we are unable to host a large special event, human trafficking is still a problem in our society. Its affects extend around the world and it exists here in our local area also.” Participants will record their times online, based on the honor system, and prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers of the 5K run. All who register will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag. All proceeds from the Freedom 5K will go to A21, which rescues trafficking victims

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature--activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC. Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

Funds To Address Housing Issues The recipients of a new round of funding, which is made available annually through the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) fund, were announced by Gov. Tom Wolf on Aug. 13. The governor named 214 housing and community development initiatives in 67 counties that will share a portion of the total $45.79 million in PHARE funding. Friends Association is the recipient of two awards through this year’s PHARE funding allotment. The first will provide $310,000 to establish a new diversionary re-entry house for women and children in Coatesville. Having a safe and secure place to call home upon reunification with children can be the key to successful re-entry, and access to affordable housing can be a barrier to economic stability and selfsufficiency. This program will give women the space they need to re-establish critical bonds with their children and secure longterm stable housing. The second grant will provide $100,000 for homelessness prevention programs throughout the county. Friends will utilize PHARE funding to provide targeted financial resources and intensive case management to prevent homelessness and eviction for rentburdened families. The PHARE program is flexibile and has the ability to leverage local partnerships and leadership to address broad housing needs. It encourages local organizations and elected officials to come together and jointly decide the best way to enhance their community’s housing. PHARE funding is expected to impact nearly 2,000 Pennsylvania households through a variety of efforts. Friends Association provides emergency shelter and programs to prevent homelessness for families with children in Chester County. For more information or to support these initiatives, readers may visit www.friendsassoc.org.

During the early 1900s, Parkesburg had its own professional baseball team created by Horace Beale Jr., president of the Parkesburg Iron Company (PICO). His team, called the PICO Ironmen, played at PICO Field, known today as Minch Park, where they faced players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Casey Stengel. Hoping to recreate history and make the ballpark look as it did from 1917 to 1921, when the Ironmen were in action, is the goal of Chad Naggy, president and commissioner of the South Eastern Pennsylvania Travel Baseball Association (SEPTBA). SEPTBA teams currently use the baseball diamonds at Minch Park. “There are two fields at Minch Park - upper and lower. The upper field is where the Ironmen played, Naggy explained. According to www.septba .com/historic-pico-field, Beale was a sports enthusiast who invested in a ballpark that met the standards of Major League Baseball (MLB). Beale entered the independent team into an industrial league, where it played teams from New York and Baltimore, as well as the Camden Dry Docks, Bethlehem Steel, Klein Chocolates and others. The PICO Ironmen also played various teams from the Negro League and MLB teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics and Phillies and Boston Red Sox. In 2016, SEPTBA was formed by Naggy as an avenue for young ballplayers ages 8 to 13 to compete. “The lower field will stay smaller for kids ages 9 to 12, and I would like to restore the upper field to a mini stadium and a place for players ages 13 to 19, Naggy said.

Naggy, who owns The Triple Play Barn, which sells sports uniforms, learned about the history of the field through his company. “When I opened my store in Gap, people would come in and tell me about (the team) and I talked to (local historian) Gerry Treadway and he helped me out, Naggy recalled. “I went to the library and saw the actual uniforms from the PICO team there. I approached the borough, and they gave me opportunity to manage the fields and take them over for my league. Parkesburg residents, including Thaddeus “Bud Wilde, are excited about the project. Wilde owns a photograph collection from the original PICO team. “In 1915, Connie Mack was in Parkesburg and (his) Philadelphia A’s played here, said Wilde, noting that the photo album also contains an image of New York Yankee Herb Pennock, who is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. “Cincinnati Reds played here in 1916, when they were the world

champs. They played here twice that summer, he added. He is most proud of a photo in the album that depicts his dad and grandfather in the stands at PICO Field. Naggy has established a GoFundMe page and his league is hosting tournaments as a way to raise money for the restoration project, which will include a replica of the grandstands, a press box, dugouts and a field converted to 90-foot base paths as it was in 1921. Naggy has big dreams for the grand opening of the field sometime in 2021. “Binney Beale, the grandson of Horace Beale, said he would love to come to the grand opening, Naggy said. Also planned are an antique car parade, spectators dressed in 1900s garb, period music and 10-cent popcorn for sale. For more information about the project or to make a donation, readers may visit www.gofundme.com /f/restoration-of-1921 -pico-field or contact Naggy at septbassoc@gmail.com.

When OneRunTogether (ORT) was founded by Chester County resident Vern Murphy in 2009 as a way to honor his late wife, Beth, who passed away from breast cancer, it was based on the idea of raising money to support

local cancer patients by holding running and walking events throughout the area. Despite the pandemic, ORT has continued to raise funds by sponsoring virtual 5K and 10K events instead. ORT presented the “Creamery Hustle in June, which is normally held at Penn State Berks in

Reading, and the “Jolly Jingle in July, where registered runners and walkers received wrapped Christmas presents. The next event on the ORT schedule will be the first “Ready Set GLOW! Virtual 5K/10K Race. Runners and walkers have from 6:30 p.m. See ORT pg 7

The virtual event will be based on an honor system, and runners are encouraged to measure the 5K (3.1 miles) or the 10K (6.2 miles) with a running app or a treadmill. Only those who run the 5K or 10K will be eligible for the top prizes. Participants are asked to post their photos at www.facebook.com/onerun together. “For the July race, we asked people to put their photos on Facebook wearing race gear, which included a Santa hat with a OneRun pin on it,” said Valentino. All proceeds from the event will benefit ORT, which provides financial support to cancer patients. For example, those who qualify have received grants for their mortgage payments, rent, utility bills, car repairs and home repairs. Since 2011, ORT has given more than 385 grants totaling more than $180,000. Spiritual support is also provided. Normally, Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties and prays with each patient and his or her family.

There were about 200 people there, and it was held at Honey Brook Golf Course at night and we gave all of the participants glow sticks,” said ORT volunteer Sharon Valentino, one of the race coordinators. “This (virtual 5K/10K) is replacing what we would have done this summer without COVID.” Because of social distancing, participants will be asked to complete a 5K or 10K on their own, whether it be running or walking on trails, roads or on treadmills. Tshirts and glow items will be provided to registrants while supplies last. Participants are encouraged to run at night with their glow sticks. “It was set up as an evening race, but if they run during the day, that’s fine,” said Valentino. The top prizes for the overall male and female winners of the 5K run and the 10K run will be given an assortment of glow items.

In addition to dancing, the inperson parties included special features such as the limbo, conga lines and parachute games. Participants were also invited to play with balloons and hula hoops. The virtual dance parties do not feature the special in-person activities, but there is plenty of music and singing along and an opportunity to make song requests. Helping out at the in-person dances were volunteers, including Lizzy’s friends and family members, as well as members of Best Buddies, an organization that provides one-on-one friendships and other services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. On select Saturdays from now through March of 2021, youths with special needs and their families are invited to take part in dance parties, which are currently being held virtually via Zoom. The dance parties, themed “Everybody In,” were previously held at Grove United Methodist Church in West Chester, and they were hosted by Lizzy Stahelek, who organized the

events in order to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. Because of COVID-19, Lizzy decided to hold the dances virtually instead. Youths and their family members can now dance to music wherever they choose, whether it be in their kitchen or living room or even outdoors. To access the Zoom sessions, readers may search for “Everybody In” on Facebook. Upcoming virtual dances will be held on Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 31, Nov. 7 and 21 and Dec. 19. Dances in 2021 are scheduled for Jan. 9 and 23, Feb. 6 and 20 and March 6 and 20. “We decided to go virtual so everyone would be safe. We are hoping to get back to the church maybe in January,” said Lizzy. Lizzy’s younger sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. The goal of

CBF Awards Contracts For Trees The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new

contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will

grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as twothirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing

polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.

Vision Resources Posts Tip Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania encourages the public to consider striving for 20-20-20 in 2020. Many people may be experiencing more screen time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Many people are spending more time with Zoom meetings, webinars, and other video conferencing at work. At home, they may use their mobile phone and laptop and watch television. Children are also at risk for eye strain with schools practicing safe distancing by teaching via computers.

School administrators and teachers should be aware that breaks are necessary. Designed to reduce eye fatigue, the 20-20-20 rule states that for every 20 minutes of screen time, an individual should look away at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Regular screen breaks can give the eyes some muchneeded rest and help prevent eye strain. The 20-2020 rule should be followed by people of all ages. For more information on eye health, readers may visit www.vrocp.org.

Chester County author Terry Francis Grills recently announced the release of two new books, “A Twist in the Tale” and “The Marriage Fee: Ilobola.” Grills was born in 1942 in Totnes Devon, England. In 1948, he immigrated together with his parents to South Africa where his father worked as a miner in a mining village called Pilgrims Rest. Grills spent much of his youth in the countryside surrounding the town. After completing his high school education, he worked in the mines and qualified in the field of electrical engineering. Throughout his career he has worked for American, German, British, South African and Japanese companies, gaining a global perspective. His career has allowed him opportunities to travel extensively. His first novel is not autobiographical, but he draws on his life experiences in Mozambique and South Africa to create a historical novel. “The Marriage Fee: Ilobola” is a love story that contains information about the landscape, history and lore of the two countries. For more information, readers may visit www.amazon.com and search for Terry Grills.
