Church to host 5K, fun run and Trunk or Treat
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Freedom Life Church will present the 10th annual Freedom 5K and fun run followed by a Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Salisbury Township Community Park, commonly known as Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap.
The 5K run will be timed by Pretzel City Sports. Following an awards presentation for the top finishers in various age categories, there will be a fun run that will consist of one lap around the park. Goodie bags and refreshments will be provided for all registrants.
Event organizers note that community members participate
in the event, not just those who attend Freedom Life. “There was about 100 (participants) in the 5K last year,” said Angie Dearolf, Freedom Life communications director, noting that parents with children in strollers are welcome in both the 5K and the fun run.
“Last year, we had the Southern End Strollers come with their little ones, and they walked the course.”
“Our first 5K was through the streets of Christiana,” Dearolf added, noting that the other family events were added in subsequent years.
A free Kids’ Zone will open at 9 a.m. as well. Offered will be bounce houses, a petting zoo,
face painting, concessions and more. The Kids’ Zone will remain open until 11:30 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m. FL Kids will host a Trunk or Treat for families in the lower parking lot of the park. Children in fifth grade and younger are invited to participate. As part of the Trunk or Treat event, volunteers will decorate the trunks of their vehicles in child-friendly themes and distribute candy to children. Non-scary costumes are encouraged, and admission is free.
Proceeds from the 5K will be used in the fight against human trafficking. Over the past nine years, Freedom Life has been able to give nearly $60,000 to reach,

Pequea Presbyterian Church offers ministry
BY FRANCINE FULTON
As part of an effort to serve people in need in the community, Pequea Presbyterian Church in Gap offers free food to the public every Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. No proof of income is required.
The church obtains the items from Blessings of Hope, a food distribution ministry that receives food from food producers and distributors, as well as grocery stores.
Each person gets several boxes of food at the church in a drive-up
format. “We have a dry goods box, a produce box and a refrigerated or frozen box,” explained food ministry volunteer Doris Witmer, who is also a church deacon.
On a recent Friday, the fresh produce box contained potatoes, snap peas, strawberries, lettuce, grape tomatoes and peaches.
“We usually have something they can make a salad with, and we try to get fresh fruits and vegetables,” said church pastor Alfred Wanner.
The cold box contained chocolate milk, yogurt, liquid eggs,

Ever since Adam Nagle became the director of The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, he has been trying to organize a fundraising concert at the location. “We have looked at it a number of times, but we couldn’t get the right artists, timing, resources,” recalled Nagle. Enter local influencer Brother Daniel with the contacts to bring national recording artist Sean Rowe to The Factory stage as part of an event called “Trying to Leave Something Behind.” Rowe, known for his strong vocals and poetic lyrics, will perform a live benefit concert at The Factory on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. The event’s name comes from Rowe’s song “To Leave Something Behind,” which was utilized at the end of the movie “The Accountant” starring Ben Affleck. Daniel tells the story of the anonymous donor who has endeavored to make the concert available locally. “This is the ultimate pay-itforward,” said Daniel, who explained that “Trying to Leave Something Behind” refers to the legacy our life’s work can leave for others.
According to Daniel, the local anonymous donor did Rowe a favor at one time, and Rowe has insisted on paying that favor back. “Sean lives his faith,” noted Daniel. “He said, ‘I have to pay it forward.’” Since Rowe is on a tour of the Northeast and playing in nearby Wayne, he offered to come to the donor’s house for a private concert. The donor wanted to do more. “We don’t put
our light under a bushel,” pointed out Daniel. “We let it shine.” The donor told Nagle that Rowe was available for one night and that he could play at The Factory. Nagle happily accepted the offer.
To help keep the costs of the event low, Best Western Plus Intercourse Village Inn is donating Rowe’s accommodations during his visit to the area.
Along with the music, organizers have arranged for food to be available for purchase at the event.
“We have a number of food trucks coming,” said Daniel, who was especially happy to tell of one food truck owned by a woman who attended The Factory Ministries youth programs until she was in third grade. “She is coming back to support The Factory,” stated Daniel, who
added that each food truck owner would donate a portion of profits to the ministry. Nagle is looking forward to finally seeing his dream of a benefit concert at the venue become a reality.
“It’s a real gift,” said Nagle, who noted that the anonymous donor came to him with not only the idea, but a plan and put the show together at minimal cost.
Several options are available to attend the limited-seating concert. All proceeds will benefit The Factory. Entrance to the concert will be free as space is available with a suggested
donation. To guarantee a seat, a general admission ticket may be purchased. Daniel noted that buying a premium ticket will purchase a seat in the front row and an ultimate premium

family with the best themed costumes. Gift cards will be awarded to the winners.
Participants will be able to show off their costumes during a special parade held inside the building.
“We will do a little parade around the parish center by age group,” noted Dagney.
Families may preorder whole large cheese pizzas to enjoy or purchase pizza by the slice at the event. Also for sale will be hot dogs, chips and soft pretzels. There will also be a sale of baked goods homemade by church members.
Money raised from the event will support the church’s vacation Bible school (VBS), which is offered each summer for area youths from preschool age to those who have completed fifth grade. “We had about 85 to 90 kids (attend this past summer). It was one of our biggest years since the pandemic,” noted Dagney.
The Schneider Parish Center is located at 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. Tickets purchased in advance by Friday, Oct. 18, will be discounted.
A link to preorder bingo tickets and pizza can be found by visiting www.face book.com/olcchurch and choosing “Events.” Tickets will also be available at the door. Only cash and checks will be accepted for payment. The event is geared towards families with children age 12 and under, but all are welcome.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,

PennDOT seeks feed-
back from the public
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has posted an online survey to accept feedback on its construction and maintenance services. Members of the public may take the survey through Tuesday, Oct. 22, by visiting https://tinyurl.com/Penn DOTCustomerSurvey.
The 24-question survey asks respondents how they receive PennDOT roadway information and how often PennDOT meets or exceeds their expectations in construction and maintenance activities. Respondents are also asked about their experiences with reporting concerns to the department and whether or how they use the state’s 511PA traveler information services.
Construction and maintenance work has been underway across the state this year. From January through August, 303 bridges were put out for bids to be repaired, replaced, or preserved by PennDOT or industry forces. Additionally, from January through August, more than 3,100 roadway miles were improved by department or partner crews. This number includes 1,114 miles of paving.
Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA .com, using the associated smartphone application for iPhone and Android
devices, calling 511, or following regional X alerts. 511PA is free and available 24 hours a day. For more information about PennDOT, visit www.penndot.pa.gov.

Garden program results in food donations
A vegetable garden at the Chester County Youth Center (CCYC) offers residents a way to help their community. The youths’ participation, including planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting, has resulted in the production of 17,000 pounds of vegetables since the garden’s planting in 2013. To date, the garden, which consists of six raised beds and a self-irrigated hoop house, has yielded 17,000 pounds of vegetables. All of this produce was donated to local food cupboards and CCYC’s cooking program.
The garden is the result of a partnership with Trellis for Tomorrow, a Phoenixville nonprofit whose experiential programs focus on organic gardening, environmental education, and food security.
The organic CCYC garden has three growing seasons: spring, summer, and fall. Spring plantings include potatoes, lettuce,
and cabbage. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, and eggplants are grown in the summer. More tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are planted for the fall. The garden is checked and maintained throughout the year, even when it is inactive.
Over the past few years, the CCYC garden has yielded more than 2,000 pounds of vegetables annually. The vegetables have been donated to the West Chester Food Cupboard and other local food cupboards, including Kennett Square Food Cupboard, the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown, Pathstone Food Pantry in Kennett Square, the Chester County Food Bank, and the West Chester Food Cupboard. CCYC’s Arts Holding Hands and Hearts cooking program also uses the produce in creating meals with the CCYC residents.

Commissioners host state human services secretary
Chester County Government showcased its recently introduced Human Needs Network service to Pennsylvania Human Services Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh in early September. During the afternoon briefing, Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe explained the county’s intent for the new service.
The Human Needs Network focuses on helping local residents who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis or who need information about services such as food, housing, and mental health assistance. The initiative includes providing information via the local contact center for the 211 service and the 988 crisis hotline. Mobile crisis response teams also provide assistance.

The meeting with Arkoosh also included a tour of the county’s 211 and 988 contact centers, located in the Chester County Government Services Center.
At the recent meeting, Chester County’s human services director, Pat Bokovitz, and his team reported on the early impacts of using the local contact center and mobile crisis response teams. The call center has

A significant portion of Chester County’s investment in the Human Needs Network was covered by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
