Stories of Success Three graduates inducted into Octorara Hall of Fame BY FRANCINE FULTON
ll three inductees into this year’s Octorara Hall of Fame have achieved success in their respective careers. Lt. Col. Joshua Tyson, Class of 1991, is a decorated member of the United States Marine Corps; Andy Gregg, Class of 1993, has built a successful career with the NFL Network; and Michael Gill, Class of 1975, is a Broadway producer. The three new members were inducted into the Octorara Hall of Fame on Oct. 6 during a ceremony held at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. After a welcome provided by senior class president Sarah Meyer, Octorara students read biographies of each of the inductees. Introducing Tyson was Lyla Elboubkri, who noted that he has served in various military operations in the field of intelligence and has earned three master’s degrees. He
“Each and every one of you here today can forge your own path in life.” Tyson’s advice for students was threefold - to be persistent, determined and kind. He also encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunities offered at Octorara. “This school is the standard of which I judge other schools,” he said. “This is a great (learning) opportunity for you. Having knowledge is one thing. Having the desire to learn is
something completely different.” Gregg, who was introduced by student Carrie Beecher, was unable to attend the event since he had to fly to London for an NFL football game. Instead, he sent the students a video message. Gregg talked about taking a chance in life and moving to Los Angeles, where he got a job working on the sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie.” Later, he worked as a writer for WWE and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Today, he is the senior coordinating producer at the NFL Network. “I oversee a lot of our shows, including our Sunday morning pregame show. I produced the NFL draft in Philadelphia in 2017,” he said noting that he has produced pregame and post-game shows for the NFL championship game. “The biggest thing for me was I finally found something that I was passionate about.” Octorara alumna Lisa Rudisill, who nominated him for the Hall of

The POINT to present Nick Sirianni BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Parkesburg POINT youth center will present “Core Values: An Evening With Nick Sirianni” on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The annual fundraiser will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the auditorium at Octorara JuniorSenior High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. The public is invited to listen to Sirianni talk about his faith and his experiences as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Dwayne Walton, The POINT’s executive director, noted that he
was able to secure Sirianni as a speaker with the help of sports radio talk show host Rob Maaddi, who has a syndicated talk show, “Faith on the Field.” “Rob and I have been working together, and we brought in Tim Tebow (for a past fundraiser),” said Walton. “Every year around this time, I asked him to get a speaker for our event. It took (Maaddi) a few weeks, but Nick agreed to come to The POINT.” Walton noted that Sirianni’s message coincides with the values

or set up a table inside the fire hall. “People can decorate however they want. They can express their creativity,” said Mowday. There is no fee for vehicle owners, but they will be required to supply the candy. People interested in participating and handing out candy may call or text 717-330-0561 to reserve a spot. “We have plenty of room,” said Mowday, noting that registrations will be taken up to the day of the event. He noted that the first year the church hosted Trunk or Treat, activities were moved indoors because of rain. “The first year we had 300 kids come through, and we had 20 tables set up that year,” he said, adding that there is a goal to have additional vehicles featured this year. WordUP Community Ministries, a community church, is located at 160 Route 41, Gap, in the Dutchland Inc. building. The Sunday service is held in person at 10:45 a.m. and a livestream can also be found by searching for @wordup160 on YouTube. Fame, accepted Gregg’s award on his behalf. Chloe Badman introduced Gill, who has produced 16 shows on Broadway, including “The Phantom of the Opera.” He was nominated for the Hall of Fame by Octorara alumnus Norman Pine. “This is where I fell in love with live stage shows - right here at Octorara,” Gill said. “I knew that I wanted to work on the backstage side of theater.” He talked about forming a student-run drama program at Syracuse University. He later worked on the stage crew at the Valley Forge Music Fair, which has since been torn down, where he became the stage manager. Later, he moved to New York City, where he began his Broadway career. “A kid from Octorara made it to Broadway,” he said. “I got there slowly through connections and through passion. I believe that anyone here can follow their passions. Each and every one of you here today can forge your own path in life.” Closing remarks were provided by Jonathan Propper, principal. The Octorara chorale was also on hand at the event to sing the school’s alma mater and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The Parkesburg Lions Club is gearing up for its annual Halloween festivities. Club members are also continuing to collect plastics that will be recycled into benches. Two benches were dedicated in the community this past summer. The Parkesburg Lions Club Halloween Parade, followed by a Lionsorganized Trunk or Treat event, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28. The parade will begin at the A. Duie Pyle parking lot at 100 S. Limestone Road, Parkesburg. Registration will begin at 3 p.m., and the parade will step off at 4 p.m. Awards for parade winners will be announced in Minch Park. Trunk or Treat will also be offered in Minch Park following the parade awards presentation. The Lions are currently seeking organizations, bands and other groups that would like to march in the parade or present a float, as well as vehicle owners who would like to drive the parade route. Individuals may contact Lions Club president Robin McKenna at robinmckenna@ comcast.net to register. Same-day registrations will also be accepted. Those who would like to decorate a vehicle trunk and hand out treats to children in Minch Park after the parade are asked to register in advance by contacting Karen Fronefield at 484-678-4231. The activities are part of the Fall Festival and car show being conducted in the park by Everybody Plays! Complete details about events in Parkesburg on Oct. 28 can be found on the Facebook event page “Parkesburg Halloween Celebration.”
Additionally, the Parkesburg Lions Club held dedication ceremonies for two community benches earned through the TREX recycling program on July 30. The first dedication was held in front of the Parkesburg VFW, 406 W. Fourth Ave. “The bench was dedicated to Joann Carmen, who was instrumental in running the Parkesburg VFW for many years,” said McKenna. “Having a large flag displayed at ceremonies was important to Joann, so the Keystone Valley Fire Department heard of the bench dedications and brought the ladder truck along with the large American flag to display for the ceremony. Members of the VFW cut the ribbon on the bench where it now resides at the VFW flagpole.” The second bench was dedicated to Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde in front of the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg. “His family had a lovely picture of Bud that they placed on the bench for the dedication,” said McKenna. “Bud’s family cut the ribbon to dedicate this bench.” Pastor Mark Beideman from Parkesburg United Methodist Church provided the prayer at both dedications, and Lions Club member Nancy Gauthier and Parkesburg Mayor John Hagan offered remarks. Currently, plastics are being collected at the Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg: Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; Octorara Elementary School, 104 Highland Road, Atglen; Gabe’s Pizza Place, 428 W. First Ave, Parkesburg; the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, 714 Main St., Parkesburg;

that The POINT tries to instill in local youths, such as teamwork. “He is a man of faith and has a story and perspective that aligns with The POINT,” said Walton. “He is coming to talk about faith, leadership, teamwork and accountability.” “The POINT has a lot of athletics,” Walton added. “We use sports to teach valuable lessons and to develop ethics and morality in young people.” Entering the 2023 season, his third as Eagles head coach, Sirianni had a combined 23-11 record, which marks the most wins by any head coach in his first two years with the franchise. Sirianni navigated the team to its fourth alltime trip the NFL champiosnhip game in 2022, establishing himself as the youngest head coach in Eagles history to reach the big game. “He has been so successful in such a short period of time. He put a team together to work for a common goal,” said Walton. “Internally, we do that at The POINT, and externally, we use the resources in our community to empower youths. We can’t do it alone. It’s law enforcement, schools, businesses and churches. If we all work together as a team, we can have an impact on the youths in our community.” The upcoming event is designed not only to raise funds

for The POINT but also to inform the community about The POINT and its services and activities for youths, such as offering a healthy dinner for students during the school year and both lunch and dinner during the summer on Mondays through Thursdays. The POINT also offers sports and recreation programs, including basketball, boxing, soccer, gaga ball and flag football, as well as hands-on job training. “We are excited,” Walton added. “We have some football teams from some of the local high schools and people from outside of the Parkesburg area looking to come.” Tickets will be required to attend, with separate prices for adults and students. No tickets will be sold at the door. In addition to purchasing individual tickets, various sponsorship levels are available. In the dark from pg 9

Diners at past Dinner in the Dark events at White Chimneys in Gap wore special goggles to simulate vision impairments to challenge them while eating.
that VisionCorps will provide basics for staging a dinner by asking diners to envision the plate as a clock, putting meat at 12 o’clock, a vegetable at 3, and potatoes at 6. “But then, how do you use your knife and fork and make sure your water is out of the way so it won’t be knocked over?” asked Valudes. On the menu for the event will be baked chicken, roast beef and gravy, red skin potatoes, baby carrots, string beans, rolls and butter, and a tossed salad. Dessert will feature pumpkin and apple pies and chocolate cake. Beverages, which will be lemonade, coffee, beer, and wine, will all be included in the ticket. Silent auction items may include sports memorabilia, trips to water parks, overnight stays, and home goods. “One year, I won a backstage tour at WGAL, and we usually have Thirty-One Bags items,” said Valudes. Themed basket prizes will feature a chocolate basket, a fall décor basket, and a carpet cleaning kit donated by a local business. Valudes noted that local merchants often donate items connected to their businesses. More than 60 area residents attended the 2022 dinner, which raised more than $3,000 for VisionCorps. Valudes said the Lions Club would like to see that increase. “We want to continue to grow it,” she said. “We want the community to have an understanding, but we welcome sponsors and donations, which will go to VisionCorps for their services to the blind and vision impaired.” Individuals wishing to purchase tickets or sponsor a table are encouraged to do so before Friday, Oct. 27, by calling 717-826-2935 or 717-278-5482.
