Parkesburg Parks and Recreation holds scarecrow contest, plans Trunk or Treat

It is not too late for Parkesburgarea residents to vote for their favorite scarecrow as part of the second annual Scarecrow Fest being presented by the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Committee.

People may cast their vote via a Facebook poll, which includes photos of all of the scarecrows and can be found at www.face book.com/parkesburgparksand recreation. The scarecrows can also be viewed in person on the 400 block of First Avenue.

“All of the scarecrows are on display in the empty lot across from Poured Out Cafe and next to the old Parkesburg Arms Hotel,” explained April Brade, a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee.

There are currently 12 scarecrows on display. Scarecrows that have the highest number of votes to date include a Girl Scout scarecrow created by Girl Scout Troop 41385, one called Revenge of the Hair Crow and one titled Harvest Queen. Other entries include a police officer scarecrow submitted by the Parkesburg Borough Police Department, a Beetlejuice scarecrow and one of the Parkesburg Grinch created by the committee.

First-, second- and third place winners will receive a gift basket and gift cards from local businesses.

Community residents, groups, businesses and first responders were asked to enter the Scarecrow Fest contest and place their creations in the designated area for the month of October. “We put in green big fence posts to

affix their scarecrows to. They are illuminated at night,” noted Brade. “Traditional, scary and funny were the three suggestions. It was a launching pad to get them thinking.”

“All of the scarecrows are on display in the empty lot across from Poured Out Cafe and next to the old Parkesburg Arms Hotel.”

Winners of the scarecrow contest will be announced following the Parkesburg Lions Club Halloween Parade on Saturday, Oct. 26, which will end at Minch Park,

400 West St., Parkesburg. Voting for the scarecrow contest will continue through 3 p.m. that day. Also featured that afternoon will be a Trunk or Treat in Minch Park presented by the committee. During the event, costumed children can travel from car to car collecting candy and treats. Those interested in participating in the event by decorating

Atglen Public Library receives grants

Atglen Public Library (APL) was one of 13 libraries across Pennsylvania that were awarded a $5,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Office of Commonwealth Libraries (OCL). The Excellent and Equitable Youth Services Local Library Grants are designed to help libraries serve their youngest patrons by purchasing fiction and nonfiction books for youths.

Robbyn Kehoe, director of APL, applied for the grant through the OCL. “The funds are to be spent on books for youth ages birth to 18,” she said. “We will have these books on the shelf for next summer.”

The grants, which are federally funded through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by PDE, help libraries build inclusive collections for youths.

Kehoe noted that APL has also received other grants that will benefit library patrons.

State Sen. Katie Muth

awarded a $150,000 grant to APL to purchase decodable books and to educate parents about the science of reading. “Decodable books help beginning readers learn to read by focusing on phonics as the primary skill to decode words,” Kehoe explained. “Focusing on phonics, rather than guessing the words based on pictures, helps to produce stronger readers.”

APL was one of 10 libraries in Muth’s district to receive a grant to provide decodable books to community families. More than 440 decodable books are available at APL.

“All of the books may be borrowed for three weeks,” Kehoe noted. “In addition, several handouts are available to help parents and caregivers learn about the science of reading. “

APL has also been selected to receive a Thinking Money for Kids program kit from the American Library Association (ALA) and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The program kit is a collection of resources to help libraries

teach financial education concepts to children ages 3 to 12, both in the library and in children’s homes.

In the APL newsletter, Kehoe explained that the TM4K program kits consist of Playaway Launchpads for borrowing and financial games for children’s programs. Launchpads are tablets that are preloaded with fun financial education games that parents will be able to borrow for three weeks. Launchpads are kid-friendly and do not require a home internet connection.

“Selected through a national application process, APL is one of 300 libraries to receive this unique offering,” Kehoe stated. “TM4K Launchpads will be reservable throughout the Chester County Library System.”

APL is located at 121 Main St., Atglen. For more information about the grants and programs, contact Kehoe at rkehoe@ccls.org. More information about library activities is available at www.atglenpubliclibrary .org and www.facebook .com/AtglenPublicLibrary.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

A Girl Scout scarecrow selling cookies was created by Girl Scout Troop 41385.

Sherry Thompsen, Compeer program coordinator, presented a talk titled “Mental Wellness Starts With Friendship: Celebrating a Quarter Century.”

In her talk she credited Chisholm, the agencies that support Compeer and the agency’s advisory council, as well as the volunteer friends. “For 25 years, our purpose has been to support mental wellness in our community through friendship. And we continue to achieve that purpose,” she stated.

“So far, over the past 25 years, we’ve served over 350 Chester County residents living with mental health challenges. And we couldn’t have done it without the many volunteers who have helped Compeer achieve its purpose.”

Compeer pairs that were in attendance were recognized and given an opportunity to speak about how they benefit from the program.

The goal of the “nonclinical social engagement program” is to foster mental well-being through social interaction. Having a “com-

peer,” which means “peer” or “companion,” is designed to help build self-esteem and reduce loneliness in a person dealing with mental health challenges. According to a history of the program, Chisholm founded Compeer Chester County in 1999 after previously starting a Compeer program that served Montgomery and Delaware counties. He utilized a program model that was created by Compeer International. Since its inception, Compeer Chester County has been funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and operated under the auspices of MHP, along with private donations and grants.

By January of 2000, Compeer matched 25 adults with volunteer friends from the community. Beginning in 2005, Chisholm was assisted by Thompsen, who started as a volunteer and then was named outreach consultant. Her role expanded

over time and, in 2013 she became an official parttime MHP staff member. Chisholm retired in 2014, and between 2015 and 2018, Bill Kaiser and Don Altemus each served as program managers at different times. Kueny was named program manager in December 2018 after serving as division director for MHP.

Compeer is always in need of volunteers, who are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Pairs

share activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie or going for coffee or lunch. Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional.

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

Event to explore challenges of poverty

A Poverty Simulation will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 116 Lancaster Pike, Oxford.

Co-hosted by a collaboration of community organizations committed to

addressing poverty in Chester County, the event will provide participants with a simulated firsthand experience of the struggles faced by families living in poverty. During the simulation, participants will take on the identity of a person living in poverty and navigate real-life challenges, such as making decisions about health care, education, employment, and housing while having limited resources. Afterward, participants will engage in discussion about potential solutions for addressing poverty in Chester County. Light refreshments will be available.

The event aims to raise awareness of the daily challenges faced by the more than 31,000 people in Chester County who are living in poverty.

The event is open to the public. To register or for more information, visit https:// kacsimpact.org/workshop/.
