18th Annual Sacred Heart Craft Fair Set By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
The 18th annual Sacred Heart Fall Craft Fair is set for Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Oxford. There are 75 vendors scheduled to attend the large event, which is organized by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus of Sacred Heart Church. “We have mostly all handcrafted things,” committee member Patti Cripps said. Craft items that will be offered for sale will include American Girl doll clothing, cutting boards, yard art, jewelry, gift baskets, lighted bottles, glass etching, birdhouses made from gourds and more. “There are lots of things for Christmas shopping; there are always Christmas crafts,” Cripps said. Cripps estimates that 85% of the
vendors return from year to year. “We have a winning plan that everybody likes,” she said. There are always some new vendors, including one that Cripps is particularly excited to see. Mary Lou Burton will sell and sign copies of her children’s book about cats, titled “Fluffy’s Tales.” In addition to the crafters, there will also be the popular Grannies’ Attic section, where shoppers may purchase gently used items that have been donated for the sale. The section features housewares, jewelry, Christmas decorations and more. When visitors need a break from shopping, they may enjoy lunch, which will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day’s menu will feature pulled pork sandwiches, grilled cheese, hot dogs, chili and zesty tomato soup. Soup and chili will be sold by the quart. Homemade wrapped baked goods See Craft Fair pg 3
Promise Players To Stage “Don’t Kick The Turkeys” A church so stuck in its ways that only news of the new pastor’s impending death can get its members to change - if that story sounds familiar, it is because it is. “This is the fourth time we’re doing it,” said Doreen Creighton, founder of Promise Players, a Christian theater group, and director of the group’s next production, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys.” “It’s our most requested play.” The story is also reminiscent of reallife churches that struggle with loyalty to tradition and a reluctance to change. “We love our church. Everything is wonderful,” quipped Tim Strawser,

Traditionally, those who would like to learn more about their faith would speak with their pastor, read related books or take part in a Bible study. Now, there is an additional way for people to get a new perspective about the Scriptures. Chester County resident Stephanie Rousselle recently launched a new podcast called “Gospel Spice,” which strives to “spice up” people’s time with God. People may listen to the podcast at www.gospel-spice.com, or they may download the episodes and listen to them on their phones, tablets or laptops. “A podcast is like a radio show, (and) it’s free,” Rousselle explained. “It is something you download, and you can listen anytime you want on your computer, phone or tablet. It’s accessible 24/7. It is the ultimate tool (for communication). Since everyone is so busy, you can listen when you are doing something else like commuting to work, cooking dinner or getting ready in the morning - any time your mind can go somewhere else. “ Rousselle, who leads the women’s ministry at Calvary Fellowship Church in Downingtown, launched her new podcast on Oct. 6 during a party held at

Home-based business vendors that will be represented include Arbonne, Avon, LuLaRoe, Mary Kay and others. “We had an overwhelming response (from crafters), and we have a waiting list. Visitors will be able to purchase tickets to enter the drawing, and they do not need to be present to win. “Starting at around 1:30 p.m., we will draw names,” Wentz McElroy pointed out. “New this year is that people can check the craft show web page and Facebook page to see if they won an item.” Food, the baked goods sale and prize items will be located in the

with God.” Rousselle, who has traveled extensively, has been a guest speaker at church and women’s events for the past 20 years. She also leads the women’s Bible study at Calvary Fellowship Church. She said that her knowledge of various cultures can add to the Christian experience, noting that her perspective is also unique because she grew up as an atheist. “I came to faith as a young adult (after) I came to the U.S. as a foreign exchange student (from France) at 16,” Rousselle noted. “I have spent the last two decades of my life on three continents, four countries and five cities. This has given me unique insights into our culture. I work at making Scripture exciting by adding a cultural perspective. When we enter our relationship with God and a reading of the Bible with the proper cultural perspective, it’s more exciting.” She said that producing the podcast is a way to introduce the Gospel to people of all ages. “I think it’s investing in the future. It’s how millennials love to consume content,” Rousselle said. Since its launch, “Gospel Spice” has reached more than 1,000 people across all of the podcast platforms. the Marsh Harbour Clubhouse in Downingtown. “The event was very successful. Over 70 people came, and we enjoyed the live recording of a podcast episode in order to learn how podcasts are recorded, edited and published,” Rousselle reported. The event also included a video call from Naomi Zacharias, founder of Wellspring International, a humanitarian aid organization, who educated participants about the organization’s efforts to end human trafficking. “At the event, we raised almost $3,000 for Wellspring,” Rousselle noted. More information about the organization is available at www.wellspringinternational.org. To date, Rousselle has hosted six “Gospel Spice” episodes. Topics include “Jesus, Son of God and Son of Man,” “Who Does Jesus Say He Is?” and “The Spice of the Gospel.” Each prerecorded episode lasts between 25 and 30 minutes. When a guest speaker is featured, the podcast will be slightly longer. “‘Gospel Spice’ is for anyone who has experienced a level of staleness in their relationship with God or those who feel their relationship with God is boring or running dry and it’s not that exciting,” Rousselle said. “‘Gospel Spice’ is your new secret ingredient to spice up your relationship

between the 2001 and 2019 productions, actress Julie Beittel remarked, “(My character) is really different. The first time, I played her as a caricature, but now she’s more real. I see ways that I’m like her.” “We were in our 30s or 40s then,” Strawser said of the first production. “Now, (the play) will speak a little louder because we are (the age of) the people who control the church.” Creighton suggested that along with age and maturity has come a deeper understanding of issues that arise in churches. “We’re human, and that’s where we need the grace of God,” she said. “Everyone has been through something in their life (and that may be) the reason why they act the way they do,” said actress Nancy Snyder. “We only see the
tip of the iceberg.” Presenting the play and its valuable message is a service to churchgoers, as it will hopefully inspire them to be thoughtful about their own congregations. “It means more to us,” Hess remarked. “I look at past shows as (just) a show and this one as a ministry.” Promise Players, a nonprofit theater group, is starting its 25th season. “I think God has really blessed it,” Creighton said. “I could tell so many stories of how God provided the actors we needed for each show.” Audiences have been generous in their support, as well. Since the beginning, the suggested donations for admission have been given to a charity related in some way to the respective productions, for a total of more than $224,000 in 24 years. For “Don’t
Kick the Turkeys,” the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg was selected as the beneficiary as there is a child in the cast. “That’s one of the things I like about (Promise Players),” said actress Laura Scott-Wise. “We talk about helping others in the play, and we get to help (the clinic).” The play will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1; at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 2 and 9; at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, Nov. 3 and 10; and at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7 and 8. The play addresses a number of themes, including prejudice, control issues, jumping to conclusions, and how to help others. “I’ve heard a pastor say he could do four sermons on the play alone,” said actor Ken Hess. Although there is a serious message in the play, it addresses problems in the church in a humorous way. “It’s a little over the top with some of the characters, but not too far,” Creighton commented. “It is just a funny play.” Promise Players presented “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” which was written by Andy and Jennifer Hansen, in 2001, 2004, and 2011. Magician Brett Myers recently announced that the Magic & Wonder Show formerly located at the Bird-in-Hand Stage will move to a new location for its fifth season in Lancaster County. The theater previously known as Rainbow Comedy Playhouse is being transformed into the Magic & Wonder Theater and will offer multiple shows a week from April through December. The magician explained that the new venue at 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, will allow for larger, more astonishing illusions. Additionally, his wife, Labrina, will be able to soar high in the air with her aerial act. While Magic & Wonder has no connection to the former Rainbow Comedy Playhouse, Myers announced that anyone who purchased a season pass for 2019 or 2020 at Rainbow Comedy Playhouse is invited to contact the new theater to receive a free 2020 season pass to the new 2020 Magic & Wonder Show. Those who purchased passes can contact the Magic & Wonder Show box office at 717323-3077 to claim a complimentary season pass. Magic & Wonder launched in partnership with the Birdin-Hand Restaurant and Stage in 2016, and they plan to continue offering meal packages as well as explore other opportunities for collaboration in the future. All Christmas shows scheduled for the 2019 season will remain at the Birdin-Hand Stage. The Magic & Wonder Theater

Flowering Trees Classes Planned Penn State Extension will offer classes for anyone who wants to learn more about flowering trees that are good choices for use in local landscapes. Penn State horticulture professor Dr. David Sanford will cover about 30 different trees with an emphasis on trees that are readily available in the nursery trade. Two sessions will be held. The session on Wednesday, Nov. 6, is designed for green industry professionals, and the second session on Friday, Nov. 8, is for home gardeners. Each class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Janssen Center on the Penn State Berks Campus, 2080 Tulpehocken Road, Reading. Participants will improve their ability to identify and use flowering trees that will grow well in Pennsylvania landscapes. They will learn key identification characteristics, find out about new and improved cultivars, and discover pest issues they should know about before choosing some of these trees. No prior study of woody ornamental plants is required. Participants should plan to spend approximately half of the class time outdoors touring the shrub collection on the Penn
State Berks Campus, and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. The cost to attend either day includes morning refreshments, lunch, and handouts. The class for green industry professionals has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for two Category 05, 06, 18, 23, and PC pesticide update credits. International Society of Arboriculture arborist credits are also available. The class for home gardeners qualifies for the Penn State Master Gardener Advanced Training series in Plant Identification. Preregistration is required by Monday, Nov. 4. To register for the session for green industry professionals on Nov. 6, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/ flowering-tree-identification-for -green-industry-professionals. Members of the Uwchlan Historical Commission will hold their final open houses for the year on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the John Cadwalader House, 21 N. Village Ave., and the Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse, 9 N. Village Ave., both in Lionville. In addition to touring the buildings, visitors are invited to attend a talk titled “The History of Quilting and Quilts” by Pat Gaines, chairperson of the commission, that will take place at 3 p.m. at the Cadwalader House. Since space is limited, visitors are invited to bring photos of their own quilts to share. People with smallersize quilts may bring them to the event. The talk will take place on the first floor of the building. According to commission member Teddi Wright, Gaines has collected quilts over the years from yard sales and has some that were made by members of her family. She has also inherited pieces and has also crafted quilts of her own. She will share a collection book that includes various quilt tops in different patterns, including Bear’s Paw, Grape, Cathedral Windows, Flying Geese, sampler style and “crazy quilts,” which are made from leftover fabric. She will discuss what era the quilts are from and provide information about their history. One of the photographs in the book See Quilts pg 8

Two events will herald the start of the Christmas season at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The annual holiday bazaar held by the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ten vendors will sell an array of items, including amigurumi (crocheted animals and other characters), cards and stationery, homemade jellies, home décor, and wooden decorations. Crocheted, quilted, and sewn items will be available as well. Door prizes will be awarded every half-hour, with the prizes donated by vendors in lieu of paying a fee to participate. A crafting supplies room will be new this year. MOPW member Nancy Harnish explained its origin, familiar to many a crafter. “Marlene (Fromm) and I bought a bunch (of supplies) at a sale for dirt cheap, and we had grandiose ideas, but we never got around to it,” she said. The kitchen will offer Middle Octorara Muffins - breakfast sandwiches containing bacon, eggs, and cheese - to start the day. The lunch menu will include an assortment of soups, beef barbecue, and hot dogs. Soft pretzels will return for the second year, as they went over well last year, said MOPW member
Shirley Miller. The group will try adding turkey barbecue to the menu this year as a way to use the leftover meat from the turkey supper held earlier this month. Miller noted that although 400 people were served at the dinner, the unexpected boon of receiving boneless meat from a new supplier resulted in more net meat than expected. There will also be a baked goods table with cookies, cakes, pies, and other sweet treats, including peanut butter balls. “Boy, people go (wild) for those things,” Miller said of the nutty delights. Proceeds from the bazaar will be used by the MOPW to support local missions. For more information about the event, readers may call Miller at 717-786-3690. MOPC will once again serve as a drop-off center for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts. The church will be open to receive the boxes from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18; from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 20; from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21; from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22; from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 23; from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24; and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. features a hand-spun linen and wool coverlet, commonly known as a “linseywoolsey,” which dates to the 19th century. It served as a reversible bed covering, with the dark side used in the winter and the light side displayed in the warmer months. “A friendship quilt, circa 1950s, was Pat’s first attempt at quilting when her grandmother, Gertrude Getzlaff, had designed a colorful selection of fabric tulips that were sewn by appliqué on the quilt top,” Wright explained. “On display will be a quilt top of pansy baskets, patterned by appliqué and embroidery, and a treasured vintage red and white bed coverlet.” Both the schoolhouse and the Cadwalader House, owned by Uwchlan Township, are open to the public the first Sunday of every month from April through November. Admission is free, and visitors of all ages are welcome. The schoolhouse was established in 1859 and operated as a township school for 100 years. It is named for the teacher who taught there from 1929 to 1956, who was also township secretary for nine years. It is now a restored one-room schoolhouse, and visitors are able to see the 1880 slate chalkboard, books and the cast-iron stove that heated the room. Visitors can view the original school bell, as well as old schoolbooks and learning cards used by students. Wright pointed out that some local residents, now in their 70s and 80s, were students in the school when it was in operation. The Cadwalader House was built circa 1712 and served as the meeting and worship site for Welsh Quakers, who were the principal settlers in the township. “There are a lot of historical buildings along Village Avenue, but the John Cadwalader House is credited with being the oldest,” noted Wright. Wright said that both longtime local residents and those new to the area attend the monthly open houses. “People who (tour the schoolhouse) went to school there or they want to bring their grandchildren,” she said. “Some people are interested in history, and some are new people and did not grow up in this area and want to know more about it.” For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/UwchlanHistory or www.uwchlan.com/170/Historical -Commission.
“The History of Quilting and Quilts” will be presented by Pat Gaines, chairperson of the Uwchlan Historical Commission, during an open house at the Cadwalader House in Lionville on Nov. 3. The Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse will also be open for tours that day.

Alicia Trescavage, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall production of “Radium Girls,” did an extensive search, reading both the play and the book multiple times, before choosing the historical drama. “I wanted a play with a lot of strong female parts, and … this story really struck me,” said Trescavage. “Radium Girls,” by D.W. Gregory and based on the lawsuit that changed employment history, will be presented at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. Set in 1926, when radium, which had been discovered by Madame Curie, was being used in a variety ways, the play focuses on young women who are working as painters of luminous watch dials. When the young ladies begin to display symptoms of a mysterious disease, the workers are pitted against the owners and administrators of U.S. Radium Corporation. The play pays homage to the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter played by Faith Strenck, who worked to bring the company to justice. Grace’s chief adversary is Arthur Roeder, played by Colton Mann. Roeder, president of U.S. Radium, finds it hard to
Public Invited To Meet Goldens Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will hold its monthly open house on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds. The public is invited to meet the golden retrievers and other dogs available for adoption. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions. There is no admission fee. Food will be available for purchase, and the retail store will be open. Photos are not permitted. For more information, readers may call 717-484-4799 or visit www.dvgrr.org and look under Events.
Members of the cast of the Pequea Valley High School production of “Radium Girls” include (from left) Colton Mann, Clarissa Cacciola, Faith Strenck, and Noah Stoltzfus. The show will be presented at the school on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. with some lighter moments,” she said. “The scenes between Grace and her boyfriend (Tom Kreider, played by Noah Stoltzfus) have humor.” Strenck agreed, noting that the scenes between Grace and Tom are among her favorites. “I am having the most fun with the banter between (Grace and her) boyfriend,” said Strenck. “That brings a lot of comedic relief to this intense play.” Other challenges of the show are that the set is minimal and many of the cast members play more than one character. “(There
are challenges in) placement and lighting of scenes to make it look like a different area, and we are reusing a lot of the same (props) and putting them in different areas,” said Trescavage. Both Trescavage and Strenck are impressed with the bravery of the young women who sought justice at a pivotal time. “It was empowering for women at that time,” said Strenck. Readers who would like to see the show may purchase tickets at the door each night. Tickets will be discounted for area school students and seniors.

believe that Curie’s miraculous discovery could cause the illnesses affecting his employees. Trescavage said she liked the story because it chronicles a breakthrough in justice for those harmed on the job. “In the play, at some point (the company administration) knows (the truth about radium) and chooses to hide it,” she said. “With great discovery comes great responsibility.” Several of the 21 cast members play people who were part of the actual events, bringing an extra element to character development. Although the students, a mix of new actors and PVHS stage veterans, had not heard of the play, many have taken the time to research the story. “It’s a learning experience for them,” said Trescavage. “I like to give students an opportunity to (explore) their characters.” As Grace, Strenck is facing the challenges of relating to a character who began working full time in her teenage years and died as a result of her work. “(Grace) is incredible. She’s really strong … determined. She’s not going to back down,” Strenck said. Faced with displaying emotions of which she has no experience, Strenck is working hard to develop the character. “I want to do her justice,” she said. Because of the heavy subject matter, Trescavage noted that there are challenges in the flow of the action. “It’s a longer show

The two happened to work at the Chester County Sheriff’s Office as security officers, an experience that had inspired them to attend the academy. During the Police Academy graduation ceremony, Smith saw Welsh hand diplomas to nowDeputy Sheriff Marjorie Gonzalez and Deputy Sheriff Deborah Holmes. Smith’s swearing-in ceremony, held in Courtroom 3 of the Chester County Justice Center, included an invocation from retired Captain Joseph Carbo and opening and closing songs by former Lt. The Chester County Sheriff’s Office welcomed a new deputy sheriff recently. Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh administered the oath to Deputy Sheriff Darren L. Smith on Sept. 30. Smith was accompanied by his mother and sister, who had traveled two hours from northern New Jersey to attend. A native of Bergen County in New Jersey, Smith said the occasion marked the successful completion of a quest that began about three years ago. Smith graduated from Paramus High School in New Jersey and went on to earn a degree in communications from Ramapo College of New Jersey. He said he held a diverse array of jobs, but the one that brought him the most fulfillment was serving as a police reserve officer in his hometown. Smith moved to Chester County in 2016. By then, he was committed to pursuing a full-time career in law enforcement and enrolled in Delaware County’s Police
