Run/Walk For Life to feature new course, fun run BY FRANCINE FULTON

hester County Connect Care (CCCC), a nonprofit medical care pregnancy center, will present its annual 5K Run/Walk For Life on Saturday, Nov. 11, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville. New elements of this year’s event will be a Family Fun Run, a different 5K course and a Pup Station for dogs. Race-day registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m., followed by an awards presentation. “There will be first-, second- and third-place medals awarded to the top three male and female finishers for each age group and an overall male and female winner of the 5K,” explained Stacey McNutt, CCCC events coordinator. “At approximately 10 a.m. after the awards ceremony will be the Family Fun Run that is open to people of all ages. Everyone will get a goodie bag. Children age 12 and under will get a medal for finishing.” She noted that youngsters in strollers along with dogs on leashes are welcome to be a part of the fun run, which will be a little less than 1 mile. “We will have a Pup Station, and everyone who brings their dog will get a bandana (for their pet). We will have treats for the dogs and water,” said McNutt.

Children took part in last year’s Chester County Connect Care 5K Walk/Run For Life. This year, a new Family Fun Run option has been added.

Refreshments will be provided for all participants, and there will be a hot chocolate station. Children’s games will be available free of charge. In addition to the newly added Family Fun Run, 5K participants will follow a new course. “The course was cross-country and in the grass, which was a bit of a deterrent

for some 5Kers,” said McNutt. “This year, it will be on pavement and gravel in the park. (Runners) will start at Pavilion 4, run through the campgrounds and come back and end where they started.” The event will include an opening ceremony. Myriam Ruager, CCCC executive director, will talk about CCCC’s mission and where the funds are going. “Myriam will push an empty stroller to honor the unborn and the babies that have been lost,” said McNutt. “It makes a statement.” Last year, there were more than 230 participants, but McNutt said that this year’s goal is to attract 400 runners and walkers. Church groups and others are being invited to take part in a FUN-Raiser by registering for the event as a team. “The person with the most donations for their team will be recognized and given a prize,” said McNutt.

Members of the congregation of Bellevue Presbyterian Church are looking forward to celebrating the church’s 200th anniversary with a special service.

“Surviving the Holidays” Gateway to present GriefShare seminar BY FRANCINE FULTON

For those who have lost a loved one, Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a difficult time. Especially challenging can be family gatherings where a person’s friend or family member is particularly missed. To help people cope during the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas, a Surviving the Holidays seminar will be presented on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. The meeting will be led by Paul

and Twila Ranck, who facilitate weekly GriefShare meetings at the church. Participants will discuss several topics, including how to deal with the many emotions they will face during the holidays and what to do about traditions and other changes. They will also be provided with tips about how to navigate social events. “Surviving the Holidays is a stand-alone group. It will focus on the six weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Twila explained. “We will also touch on (handling See GriefShare pg 2

16 to help with the business, eventually becoming president of the Lancaster County Union Livestock Stock Exchange. The post-World War I years were contentious political times between Democrats and Republicans. The 10th amendment to the Constitution had been passed in 1919, banning the sale of alcoholic beverages across the nation. By 1922, the proliferation of underground distilleries and “bathtub gin” accelerated. Due to the Great Depression occurring during the 1920s, some Salisbury Township families put food on the table by selling alcohol made with makeshift backwoods distilleries. Musser, with several other prominent local men, formed the Lancaster County Coali-

tion Party of Democrats and Independent Republicans. Musser was to be their candidate for mayor in 1921, on the ticket with McSparran. While McSparran lost his race, Musser not only won the mayoral race but served two four-year terms. In that time, he successfully initiated the commission style of government in Lancaster city, modernized police department facilities, improved sewer and water infrastructure, brought city streets up to modern quality and equalized city tax assessment laws. He also worked hard to get the cobweb of phone and electric lines along the city streets placed underground to improve the appearance.

Submitted by Leona Baker of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township Several years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Robinson donated a political banner to the Historical Society of Salisbury Township featuring candidates John Aldus McSparran and Frank Custer Musser. Made of silk and embroidered in gold thread with gold spiral fringe and wording on both sides, it was made for the election campaign of 1922 - tangible evidence of political activity in Salisbury Township at that time. McSparran was a candidate for governor in 1922. His family members were dairy farmers in Lancaster County for many generations. As a secretary, treasurer and eventually master of the Pennsylvania State Grange, he became interested in politics. He entered the 1922 gubernatorial race but lost to Gifford Pinchot, although he received nearly 40% of the votes. Such was McSparran’s influence and ability to cross political lines that when Pinchot won the gubernatorial election again in 1931, he appointed McSparran as secretary of agriculture. Musser was mayor of Lancaster city from 1922 to 1930. The son of a New Holland cattle dealer, he left school at age

David’s Drive continues to serve veterans BY FRANCINE FULTON

David’s Drive 831 (DD831) was created in 2010 in memory of David Turner Jr., who died in 2009 at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. While working in the canteen at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, David Jr. learned that many veterans lacked basic necessities. The goal of the charity at the onset was to honor David Jr. by providing veterans with Tshirts, underwear and socks. Today, the work of David’s Drive has continued and has grown to include many service projects that benefit veterans. For example, this past spring, DD831 volunteers took a group of veterans to several Philadelphia Phillies games, including one on May 22, which was David Jr.’s birthday. Past outings have included taking veterans to a Philadelphia 76ers game and preseason Philadelphia Eagles games. In April, DD831 sponsored the Lathe Project for Veterans. Using the donated lathe machines, veterans are now able to create bowls and other objects made of wood. “(Veterans who reside at the VA) need opportunities for doing something different,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of DD831. In June, the charity hosted its annual chartered fishing

trip for veterans, and in August, DD831 hosted more than 100 veterans at the third annual David’s Drive 831 Festival for Veterans. “We served cheese steaks, grilled chicken, corn on the cob and sides, most of which was donated by Triple Fresh Market,” noted Turner, adding that David Jr. once worked at the market. The festival also featured magician David Hall and live music by The Burners. As part of an ongoing effort, the Turner family hosts a picnic each year at its home. Attendees are asked to bring a donation of socks or underwear to the event. According to Turner, the first David’s Drive picnic was held on May 22, 2010, on what would have been David’s 21st birthday. At the time, the family chose to celebrate David’s life with a picnic in the backyard and to honor his wish to help veterans by holding the clothing drive. The tradition has continued ever since. Most recently, DD831 delivered more than 350 cases of shampoo and body wash to the Coatesville VA valued at more than $16,000. The items were donated by the Farason Corporation in Coatesville. David’s Drive will also sponsor a variety of activities during Veterans Week, Monday, Nov. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Coatesville VA, including super bingo. At least 1,000

prizes will be given out. To learn more about the charity, the community is invited to attend a Veterans Day ceremony to be held at Tel Hai Retirement Community on Sunday, Nov. 5, beginning at 2 p.m. Turner, accompanied by his wife, Joy, will be the guest speaker at the event, which will include patriotic music by the 49ers Chorus and the honoring of local veterans. The program will be held in Tel Hai’s StoneCroft Center for the Performing Arts, 4000 Tree Line Drive, Honey Brook. For more information about David’s Drive or to make a donation, visit www.davidsdrive831.org or www.facebook.com/davids .drive.

On Sunday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m., Bellevue, 810 Newport Ave., Gap, will hold a special service including a short presentation called “Celebrating What God Has Done.” Missionary and professor of theology Bruce Anderson will speak about his work in the mission field at the 9 a.m. Sunday school. He will speak at the 10 a.m. service, and special instrumental music will be provided by a group of woodwind players. Associate pastor Brad Moger will share thoughts reflecting on the 40 years Bud Davies was pastor of the church. The service will be followed at 11:30 a.m. by a reception with refreshments. According to church historian Dale Groff, the roots of the church are found in Scotland in the 1300s when families named Maxwell, Kennedy, and Stewart united through marriage. Stewartsville, N.J. In the early 1800s, Jane Maxwell started a Sunday school in Gap that attracted up to 300 participants. A house of public worship called Bellevue was built on an acre of land owned by Elizabeth Kennedy in 1823, with eight men working to dig the foundation, hauling stone and bringing boards, rafters, shingles, and more to construct the building, which was completed on Dec. 27 of that year. According to John Perella, additions were made to the north and the east sides of the building, with the section added in 1863 becoming an education wing and the eastern addition including a library and a large fellowship hall named for Davies. Moger noted that the trajectory of the church mission is both international and close to home. “ While we have always identified with a global movement, we have been re-embracing our call to be God’s people in our local area,” he said, noting that about 50 people from the neighborhood have been attending Wednesday night Eat-n-Meet dinners held at 5:30 p.m. to coordinate with the Kingdom Kids children’s program. Readers who would like to learn more about the church may visit www.bellevueepc.org.

The 1920s from pg 3 Musser was also a member of several men’s clubs of the era: Moose, Elk, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. This membership may have been the catalyst of the Salisbury Township extension of the Musser/McSparran dedication, for the Knights of Pythias had an active branch in Gap. The brick building that now houses Houder’s Town Clock Cheese Shoppe

on Route 41 was the local Knights meeting place. Musser ran for Congress in 1929 but lost. Information about McSparran was gathered in part from Paul Beers’ “Pennsylvania Politics Today and Yesterday.” Information about Musser was gathered with the help of Brett Snyder from the Lancaster Democratic Committee and newspaper articles.

Capital Blue Cross is supporting a wide range of educational programs in 2023, distributing a total of 88 Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Live Healthy school grants across Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley so far this year. EITC grants use state business-tax credits to fund scholarships and enrich educational opportunities through donations to innovative programs. Live Healthy grants support innovative school programs that strive to increase physical activity, enhance nutrition, and encourage healthier life habits. Capital’s generosity has supported schools, summer camps and innovative learning initiatives benefiting thousands of children. Among the educational programs Capital supports is Byrnes Health Education - York, which received an EITC grant. Capital Blue Cross grants have for years helped the center’s programs teach children how to lead healthier lives. Capital also joined the Giant Company in sponsoring the center’s recent refurbishment of the Nutrition and Fitness Learning Lab, which is scheduled tp begin hosting children this fall. The Pet Therapy program at Elizabethtown School District received a Live Healthy grant. As part of the program, specially trained dogs provide comfort, stress relief and help decrease anxiety and depression for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The Safe Berks Ready to Read Program - Berks County also received an EITC grant. The program helps to increase reading achievement for children in kindergarten through second grade.

To accommodate the growing collection, the Friends members recently installed shelving along the perimeter of the community room. “All of the hardback nonfiction will be back in the community room,” said Kolb. “People will notice the difference when they come in for the open house.” Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. For more information about the open house and activities, visit w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / R e a d MooreBookStore.
