Chester County 4-H Hosts Project Day BY FRANCINE FULTON
ouths had an opportunity to enjoy fun and educational activities during “Fall Into 4-H Project Day” held on Oct. 23 at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County, Honey Brook. During the event, presented by Chester County 4-H, four projects were highlighted: working with leather, creating string art, making a birdhouse out of a gourd and learning about small engines.

The event was designed for 4-H members, as well as those interested in 4-H, the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension. Toni Stuetz, Extension educator, reported that two youths joined 4-H during Project Day. “Today is about getting them out and socialized and back in the 4-H mindset after the pandemic,” said Stuetz, noting that last year’s Project Day was held virtually. A Plant Swap has been established at Moores Memorial Library in Christiana.
As part of a new Plant Swap program at the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana, patrons now have an opportunity to pick up a plant to grow at home or donate cuttings of plants they would like to share. There is no charge to participate in the Plant Swap, and it is open to all library visitors. The Plant Swap was established by library patron Allison Weiser, who learned about a similar program at the Malvern Public Library through a Facebook group that she belongs to, titled “Plants of Chester County, PA.”

The event will begin at 9 a.m., followed by awards and prizes for best times per age group for those running the 5K. Registrants are encouraged to obtain sponsors when they sign up and can earn CCWS swag when they reach various fundraising goals. Swag items include water bottles, hats, sweatshirts and AirPod Pros. There will be separate registration fees for adults and for teens ages 13 to 17. There will be no registration fee for children age 12 and under. eight in the park. Where you start is where you end. We normally line up the runners and ask the walkers to go behind them,” explained Michele Maloney, CCWS development director, noting that families with children in strollers are welcome. “Jogging strollers are recommended because there is a portion of the course that is not paved,” she noted. The fundraiser is designed to support CCWS’ ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free and offered in both English and Spanish. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals. CCWS offices are located in Coatesville, Kennett Square and West Chester. All funds raised during the event, including sign-up costs and donations, support the mission. “(We invite people to) help us to be able to provide the services to the families who come to us,” said Maloney, noting that in 2019, the race had close to 300 participants. “We get everyone from newborns (with their parents) to folks in their 80s.” Hibernia County Park is located at 1 Park Road, Coatesville. For more information about the event and to register, visit www.run signup.com/CCWS. Same-day registrations will also be accepted. Businesses and individuals wishing to sponsor the event are asked to contact Christen Wayman at christen@ccwsmedical.org. pretty,” said Weiser. “It’s neat to see the different plants that are out there, especially those you are not familiar with.” She said the Plant Swap promotes community sharing and is ideal for people who want to pursue the horticulture hobby in an inexpensive way. “Some people may be looking for that plant and don’t want to buy it. (At the Plant Swap), they can get one for free,” said Weiser. “And if they want to get rid some of their plants, they can bring theirs in as well.” Providing assistance with the Plant Swap is library staff member Regina Hill. “She is the main in-house plant specialist, and she (monitors the plants) and adds plants while she is here,” Weiser added. Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The Plant Swap is available during library hours: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

“I have certain plants that grow and grow. When I trim them, instead of throwing (the cuttings) away, I wanted to find some place to take them,” said Weiser, explaining how the program came about. “I saw posts about the Malvern Library plant swap, and I thought I would ask about one at our library. That’s how it started me having excess cuttings and no place to put them.” Items in the Plant Swap, which was established in late summer, can be found on a windowsill at the library. A sign next to the cuttings explains how the program works. It asks participants to take a plant or cutting and to leave the container behind. Those who would like to give a plant are asked to place the cutting in a three-inch pot or smaller container they are willing to part with. Labels will be provided. Weiser suggests that people bring cuttings in water instead of soil using empty containers such as water bottles or baby food jars. “Water is easier because it takes up less space than a flowerpot,” she said. “If you like a plant, just take it and bring something back (when you can). There are some extra jars there and paper, string and a pen if you need to make a label for the plant.” Plants that are currently available include several coleuses, an African violet and an aloe vera plant. “We have some coleuses that are really

For the gourd craft, led by volunteer Joanna Johnson, participants were provided with gourds with a pre-drilled hole that were donated by Smucker’s Gourd Farm in Kinzers. Students painted the gourds and added designs with stencils, and they were able to take their completed gourds home. Amy Magee of Black Diamond Designs led the leather craft. Using pieces of real leather, the youths created goat collars, keychains and bracelets. “Some of the children’s project focus for 4-H is raising dairy goats. So they can use the collars (on the goats) for showing,” said Magee. “They learned how to work with leather and stamp leather. They completed all the work themselves.” For the string art craft, which was led by teen volunteer Melissa Johnson, participants were given a pattern and a block of wood. They wound colored string around the nails to create a piece of art. “We gave them four designs to choose from - a pawprint, a 4-H clover, a goat or a horse,” explained Stuetz. “They put their stencil on their wood and they had to put nails in all the little holes and then wrap the string around it to form the figure.”
The small engine activity was led by Audrey Reith, Extension educator, who is also the leader of the SPARKS 4-H Ag Club in West Grove. She displayed real-life small engines for the youths to explore, including one from a motorcycle. After learning about the engines, the students created diagrams of how they worked. Some of the items completed on Project Day, including the small engine diagrams, will be entered into competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which will be held in January 2022 in Harrisburg. “We wanted to give them opportunities not only to have a fun day but (to create something for the Farm Show),” Stuetz added. “For those who are competitive and want to show and get recognized beyond Chester County, we wanted to give them that opportunity.” 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 18. There are more than 30 4-H clubs in Chester County, which meet in local homes, schools, churches or community centers, as well as at the Romano 4-H Center. Information about the clubs is available at www.extension .psu.edu/programs/ 4-h/counties/chester/clubs.
handicapped-accessibility throughout the area, and the basketball court supports veterans in long-term care by providing additional recreational activities. The campus’s Victory Garden has been around for five years and was expanded in 2020 after the donation of raised flowerbeds from an Eagle Scout project. Not only were veterans able to grow their own fruits and vegetables for use in the Healthy Teaching Kitchen cooking demonstrations, but
Coatesville VAMC was able to donate 302 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries through the Chester County Food Bank. Coatesville VAMC has also reduced the amount of pharmaceuticals entering the environment through the sewer systems, replaced 13 vehicles with more greenhouse gas efficient models, and reduced the environmental impact of shipping costs by working with companies located closer to the facility.

Tips Offered For Destressing At Work Everyone has moments when work feels stressful and overwhelming. Hendel and Goulston recently offered some of these strategies for combating stress at work. Take a few minutes to get

grounded. Grounding focuses on the present and can by used when one feels carried away by anxious thoughts or feelings or triggered by upsetting memories and flashbacks. To begin, one should find a comfortable place to sit or stand, and if sitting, rest their hands on their legs. They should be aware of the sights, sounds, textures and scents around them. They can bring awareness to their body by performing stretches or tensing and relaxing muscles. They can tell themselves, “The flashback or emotion I felt is in the past. Right now, in this moment, I’m safe.” Harness the power of deep breathing. Slowly exhale through the mouth while focusing on clearing all the oxygen from the lungs. Inhale slowly and deeply through the nose for four slow counts. Hold the breath for four more slow counts. On the next four counts, exhale again through the mouth until the lungs are empty. Hold the breath again for four slow counts. People can also carry a small reminder of something they love about their life and focus on it if they feel triggered and need to center themselves. The item might be a photo of one’s children or pet, a special necklace or something else. The person should think of the gratitude
they feel for their life whenever they look at this token. They can also grab a human lifeline. Workers should make sure there’s at least one person they can reach out to when feeling stressed. Some workplaces have a formal support group to help workers deal with stress, but employees can also start their own informal group that might meet regularly or be available when a member needs support. People can also reach out to their company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or contact a mental health professional. Hendel encourages employees to let their feelings out when possible. One can briefly move to a different room to cry or discreetly express pentup feelings. They could also get out of the building for a few minutes to take deep breaths, stretch the arms and legs and enjoy nature. Co-workers might take a short walk together. Another stress relief tactic is to play a mind game. Goulston noted that one can picture someone who loves them and speak to that person, imagining the person is providing encouragement. Hendel warned against bottling up one’s emotions because they will likely reappear, sometimes with greater intensity.

The event honors American railroads and members of the United States military. The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will present the colors at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will perform Americana and patriotic music on Saturday, and the Lancaster Trombone Quartet will perform on Sunday. During Trains & Troops, an array of military and military railroad service-related vehicles, uniforms, equipment, field gear, maps, books, photographs, memorabilia and collectibles will be on display from participating exhibitors, as well as items from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s archives. Throughout the
museum, visitors also will encounter military, civilian and railroader living history re-enactors from various eras in U.S. history. The event will offer information on a variety of topics, including World Wars I and II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and the home front. Trains & Troops activities are included in the regular museum admission. Proceeds from Trains & Troops benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Trains & Troops exhibitors and activities may be subject to change without notice. Additionally, the museum is accepting new and unwrapped toys, books and games again this year on behalf of children who benefit from the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program.
