Annual Craft Fair Set In Parkesburg

Our Lady of Consolation Parish will host its 36th annual craft fair on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. The event will feature items made by more than 40 artisans, crafters and

vendors, along with food, children’s activities and a visit by Santa.

Offered for sale will be wreaths, wooden flags, candles, jewelry, holiday decor, soaps, candles, crocheted and sewn items, pottery and personalized dog items. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a chair massage offered by one of the vendors.

Octorara Field Hockey Team

Members of the Octorara Junior-Senior High School field hockey team began and ended their season with a food drive to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC).

The first drive was held this past summer and the most recent effort took place on Oct. 29, when the student-athletes were on hand to collect food from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap.

During the food drive, shoppers were offered a list of needed items when they entered the store, and they were invited to drop off their donations as they exited. The list of wanted items include boxed potatoes, rice and noodle side dishes; hearty soups; sauerkraut; and boxed macaroni and cheese. The team members also collected cash donations.

The girls were accompanied by parent volunteers Jenny Alexander and Ashley Destephano, members of the Octorara Field Hockey Boosters Club.

“We did a (food drive) before the season started; the food cupboard was in great need and when we heard they were in great need again, we said, ‘Let’s help them with that,’” said Alexander.

“When we did the first (food drive) in July, we broke the food cupboard’s record of the most pounds of food collected at a one-day food drive and the most cash collected.” The record numbers were 1,570 pounds of food and $275. The Oct. 29 food drive totals are still being calculated.

The food cupboard had a trailer on-site, in which the girls placed the donations. “We are filling up the trailer and they will come and get it,” Alexander noted.

Represented at the event were high school students and Octorara eighth-graders. “It’s nice for the younger girls to get to know the varsity team,” noted Alexander. “They can form friendships.”

Although they have not visited the pantry in person, the girls said they were familiar with the charity. “It’s hard to put into perspective what you have and what others don’t,” said

Sydney Simonds. “Jenny was showing us pictures of empty shelves and it affected me. It was sad.”

“Recently the food cupboard has been pretty bare,” added Cecily Page. “Since the holidays are coming up, it’s important to give to those who don’t have as much as others.”

The Octorara Area School District is also holding a fall food drive for the OAFC through Friday, Nov. 11. Students in kindergarten through grade six in the Octorara Primary Learning Center are asked to place their donations in the classroom boxes, and students in grades seven to 12 are asked to place items on the designated tables at the high school. Items may also be dropped off in either of the schools’ main offices.

The OAFC is currently in need of other groups willing to conduct food drives. For more information, call 610-857-4000 or visit www.face book.com/OctoraraAreaFood Cupboard or www.octfood.com. More information about the field hockey team is available at www.facebook .com/octorarafieldhockey.

Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) will present its annual holiday craft show at Freedom Village at Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville, on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the rescue, which provides foster homes for cats and dogs until they can be permanently adopted.

The event is one of the rescue’s largest fundraisers. Admission is free and open to the public.

County Government Honors Veterans

In recognition of Operation Green Light, the county government is illuminating the façade of the Chester County Historic Courthouse in green from Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 13. Additionally, the county commissioners recently presented a proclamation recognizing Operation Green Light to county director of veterans services Susan Price.

Operation Green Light is a new initiative that aims to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, as well as to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and their families, along with the resources that are available to assist them. The initiative was introduced by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania and the National Association of Counties.

Price encourages local residents to join in displaying green lights to show their gratitude for the sacrifices of veterans and their families. She noted that there are more than 24,000 veterans in Chester County.

Chester County Veterans Affairs (VA) provides benefit

information and application services to all veterans and their spouses and dependents in Chester County, helping them to receive the benefits they are entitled to under county, state, and federal laws. The VA also maintains Chester County’s veteran graves registration record, distributes flags

and military grave markers, and supports the veteran mentorship program for Chester County’s veteran’s treatment court program.

Additional county services for veterans include the recording of military discharges by the Chester County Recorder of Deeds Office, which safeguards

discharge documents in the event of loss, misplacement or natural disaster, and a Veteran ID Program offering discounts to businesses throughout Chester County.

For more information about the programs and services offered by the VA, visit www.chesco.org/veterans.

Mowday Group Celebrates 25th Anniversary

For the past quarter century, the Mowday Group has assisted nonprofit organizations, companies and individuals with media relations and publishing needs.

Company president Bruce Mowday, who worked in journalism for more than 20 years as a reporter and editor, had the idea to start a company that would assist nonprofits, for-profits, journalists and the public.

During the Mowday Group’s existence, Mowday has helped with a number of land preservation projects and worked with nonprofit organizations across the region. On the corporate side, he has worked with law firms, banks, insurance and real estate companies and several governmental entities.

Mowday, who is also an author, also offers publishing services.

Four of his books, including his first, on Fort Delaware, are Civil War themed. Three relate to Gettysburg, including “Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story.”

For “Emotional Gettysburg,” artist Karl Kuerner created 20 original paintings and Mowday wrote essays to go with them. Mowday is working with Kuerner on a book

“It’s not a traditional craft show where vendors come in. It is mostly crafts that are donated,” said LDAR volunteer April Brade of Parkesburg, one of the event organizers. “(The items are made) by LDAR friends or associates or people that hear about (the craft show).”

Among the items for sale will be homemade dog biscuits, which come in individual packets; dog and cat toys; holiday decorations; jewelry; and LDAR swag, including sweatshirts.

Pet ornaments will also be offered for sale. “There will be a table where they can be personalized. We sold out of those last year,” noted Brade.

In addition to the craft sale, there will be a silent auction table, a sale of homemade baked goods, refreshments and an opportunity to win gift items. Adoptable cats and kittens and perhaps a puppy will be on-site during the craft show.

The holiday craft show will be held in the auditorium at Freedom Village. Visitors should follow the event parking signs, use the main

entrance at Freedom Village and ask in the lobby for directions to the auditorium.

Local crafters who would like to donate items for the show should email LuckyDawg AR@gmail.com.

LDAR is a nonprofit, nokill, all-volunteer organization. Volunteers continue to rescue abandoned kittens and dogs from puppy mills. LDAR’s most recent rescue is Harley Rose and her puppy, Hootie, who were brought to LDAR from Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT). Harley has had many litters of puppies and suffered from years of neglect. Readers can follow Harley and Hootie’s story by visiting www.facebook.com

TV Show Episode Filmed At Local Museum

The History channel’s reality television program

“Pawn Stars” recently filmed an episode at the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC), 1220 American Blvd., West Chester. The museum will celebrate the episode’s airing on Thursday, Nov. 17, with a “Pawn Stars” Premiere Party from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The show will air at 7 p.m.

“Pawn Stars” follows the daily activities at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop, which opened in 1989 in Las Vegas.

son, Rick Harrison, and grandson, Corey “Big Hoss” Harrison. Austin “Chumlee” Russell, a childhood friend of Corey’s, rounds out the crew.

Using an approach similar to PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” the “Pawn Stars” production company invites everyday people to showcase historical items they believe might be of interest to the pawn shop group. After an elimination process, those chosen to appear on the program meet with the cast to have their items appraised or even purchased on air.

There is an admission fee, which includes watching “Pawn Stars” in the museum’s state-of-the-art theater, as well as a glass of wine or beer while supplies last. Admission is free to AHMEC members.

Mowday gives frequent talks on his books, writing, publishing and history. He believes in giving back to the community and has served as president of the boards of the Chester County Historical Society, Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau and Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates. He was also a member of the Downingtown Main Street Association and the Valley Forge Park Alliance.

the health and vibrancy of the farmers’ communities. Recipients have included food banks, schools and youth agriculture programs. Since the America’s Farmers programs began in 2010, the initiatives have awarded nearly $65 million to such programs.

Farmers can enroll now for the opportunity to direct a 2023 Grow Communities donation. To learn more, visit www.americasfarmers.com.

During the school year, streets become busier with both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, so it is essential for drivers to be aware of student walkers and to be vigilant when traveling the roadways. It is equally important that student walkers and cyclists use safe practices when commuting to and from school. The Center for Safe Schools has offered tips to promote the safety of pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.

Parents should walk their child’s route each year to become familiar with it and identify any changes or hazards that may be present.

Walkers should use crosswalks, stand at the corner of the intersection, and look both ways before crossing. If no crosswalks are provided, pedestrians should walk facing traffic, watch for turning vehicles, and wait to cross until vehicles come to a complete stop.

Walkers should never enter a street between parked cars

due to limited visibility to drivers, and they should walk far enough in front of stopped vehicles so they are clearly seen. Students should walk, not run, while crossing streets. As an extra precaution, parents are encouraged to add bright or reflective items to a child’s backpack to help increase visibility.

Drivers should take extra time and precautions to ensure the safety of student walkers. Drivers should slow down and be alert and patient in school zones and at intersections, medians, and curbs where students may travel to or from school. They should also be prepared for children to enter the roadways, and they should leave plenty of space when stopped near crosswalks so other drivers can see any approaching pedestrians. Drivers are encouraged to be patient when other vehicles are stopped for pedestrians and not pass those vehicles.

Thanksgiving hosts and hostesses interested in injecting variety into their Thanksgiving offerings may want to consider a few unique side dishes to complement their turkey dinners. Sides that borrow from familiar flavors may fit seamlessly into the holiday feast and add spark to the meal.

This recipe for Gnocchi with Roasted Cauliflower from “Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple is rooted in popular ingredients synonymous with Thanksgiving. Gnocchi is a chewy and filling pasta made from potato - a holiday standard - while cauliflower is a mild, versatile vegetable that absorbs the spices

For The

and flavors of other ingredients. Putting these two ingredients together allows holiday hosts to provide a new side with some familiar flavors at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Gnocchi with Roasted Cauliflower (Serves 4 as a main course)

Ingredients

1 small head cauliflower, cut into small florets 1/4 cup fresh sage leaves 3 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt and black pepper 1 pound gnocchi (fresh or frozen) 1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Directions

1 Heat oven to 400 F. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss the cauliflower and sage with the oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Roast, tossing once, until the cauliflower is golden brown and tender, 25 to 30 minutes.

2. Fifteen minutes before the cauliflower is finished, cook the gnocchi according to the package directions. Divide the gnocchi among bowls and top with the cauliflower and Parmesan.

Tip: Cauliflower florets are easier to separate if the core is removed first. Place the head stem-side up. Using a paring knife, cut around the core at an angle, creating a coneshaped piece, then lift it out. If the head is very large, halve it first through the core.

Safety Tips

In accordance with state laws, drivers should not talk on cell phones or text while driving. Likewise, students should refrain from using electronic devices while walking or cycling to or from school. If someone must talk or text, he or she should stop and move to the side of the walkway. Also, pedestrians should never cross the street while using an electronic device, and they should avoid wearing earphones.

Drivers should be alert for an increase in the number of cyclists on roadways. To prevent collisions, drivers should anticipate bicyclists who may not follow the rules of the road.
