Church Offers Free Food To The Community BY FRANCINE FULTON

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Parkesburg Baptist Church has placed a table of food along with bins of personal care items and cleaning supplies outside the church’s front door, located at 103 West St., Parkesburg. Those in need may take whatever they need from the table and bins, which are always available except in the case of inclement weather.

wo local food drives have been scheduled to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC), which currently has a great need for donations. Members of the Parkesburg Lions Club will be stationed inside DutchWay Farm Market, 365 Route 41, Gap, on Friday, Nov. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shoppers who visit the store on those days will be invited to participate in the food donation drive. In addition, Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, will hold a drive-through food donation drive on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand at the church to accept the food donations. People are asked to hand their donations to the attendants and to not exit their cars. that are nutritious and can easily be made into a meal, including beans, dry pastas and sauces, soups and canned tuna and chicken. “We need all types of tomato products, whether it be stewed tomatoes, tomato paste or spaghetti sauce,” said OAFC executive director Judy Dougherty. “We desperately need canned fruit of all kinds. We need stuffing and gravy and meaty soups. We are so low (of everything) that it doesn’t matter what (people donate). We are in desperate need.” She explained that the number of people requesting food has surged due to the coronavirus pandemic. “As fast as we get food in here, it goes out,” she said. “(And) we have not been able to have big food drives. (Our shelves) are bare. “ The Octorara Area Food Cupboard is located at 714 Main St., Parkesburg. Current hours of operation are Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m. and 3:45 to 6 p.m. Food donations are accepted at OAFC on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m. Monetary donations are also welcome.

“We put the table out fairly early on in the pandemic,” said the Rev. Mary Lewis, pastor. “One of our members had seen there were other churches and places giving out food and we thought, ‘Since we are on the other side of town, we will put something out and see if people are interested.’” On the table, people will find items such as tuna fish, applesauce, canned fruits and vegetables and canned pasta. One bin contains items such as cereal, bread, rolls, snacks, rice and spaghetti, while the other contains toothpaste, shampoo, laundry soap and dish liquid. Initially, church members donated the items as part of the outreach, but community members soon began to contribute as well. “It has been unbelievable how much food we have gone through. It has become a community thing,” said Lewis. “When we first started there was a bit of vandalism, but some of the folks in the neighborhood, who I did not even know, helped clean it up.”

Even though The Parkesburg POINT’S virtual silent auction fundraiser is over, people can still make a donation and enjoy watching executive director Dwayne Walton’s Zoom conversation with sports celebrity Tim Tebow. Tebow, a Heisman Trophy winner and former National Football League player, was the featured speaker at The POINT’s fall fundraiser in October 2019. “We had not scheduled a speaker (for the fall 2020 fundraiser), but when COVID hit, we thought, ‘Why not do a follow-up with him?’” said Walton. “He was open to it and really believes in what we were doing.” The video includes a statement by

Larry Beaver, The POINT’s chairman of the board, followed by Walton’s one-on-one virtual talk with Tebow. Topics include how COVID-19 has impacted Tebow’s life, his work with the Tim Tebow Foundation and the importance of faith, especially during the pandemic. There are some humorous exchanges as well between Walton and Tebow that revolve around various topics, including the Philadelphia Eagles, where Tebow was briefly on the roster. In this constant onthe-go world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Shopping habits have drastically changed due to an increase in big box retailers and a boom in online purchasing. As a result of that, many have noticed something missing from their holiday traditions, taking away from the spark of the season. Making time for a tangible, personal shopping experience is beneficial. There has never been a better time for nostalgia than now. What sets the Shady Maple Gift Shop apart from other stores is that it brings back fond memories of yesteryear. Visiting the Shady Maple Gift Shop is like stepping back in time to an almost forgotten era. Friendly and courteous employees greet you

As Cavod Theatre reached its 10th anniversary this year, the decision was made to look back to the organization’s roots and celebrate by staging a junior version of one of Cavod’s first productions - “The Music Man.” “The Music Man Jr.” will play at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 4 and 11; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 5 and 12; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 6 and 13. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who is grappling with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions, dividing the 36-member cast into “family groupings,” and teaching the show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder

mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” According to Weaver, the exercise in exploring character personality helps the students “broaden their horizons as they grow in their acting.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. The director would like to see audience members have a similar experience. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.” Tickets are limited, and the theater will be at 50% capacity. Tickets to t he show are available at https://cavod.org/theatre/ or by calling 717-354-3355.
