SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL XXX • NO 40

we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive PABA Honors Business Leader Of The Year BY FRANCINE FULTON

Members of the Parkesburg Area Business Association (PABA) have selected Judy Dougherty, director of the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC), as the 2019 Business Leader of the Year. Since PABA’s annual awards banquet was canceled in May because of the coronavirus pandemic, Allan Fellman, PABA president, recently presented the award to Dougherty in person at the OAFC. The community is invited to participate in a local history scavenger hunt on Nov. 21 to celebrate Atglen Public Library’s 75th anniversary. The hunt will begin and end in front of the library’s new building on Main Street.

BY FRANCINE FULTON

tglen-area residents are invited to participate in a local history scavenger hunt to celebrate Atglen Public Library’s 75th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. As part of the first-time event, participants will pick up a free scavenger hunt passport at the hunt headquarters tent, located on Main Street across from Parkesburg Borough Hall, and then walk through town to solve riddles and answer a question at each destination.

A

Attendees will be asked to wear a mask and social distance while on the hunt. When finished, participants will return their passport to hunt headquarters, where ice cream treats and hot chocolate will be served. “The whole idea of the ice cream is that it’s our birthday,” explained library director Robbyn Kehoe. “Seventy-five years ago on that weekend is when we first opened our doors.” Kehoe explained that the scavenger hunt will involve searching for buildings in the borough and then answering a specific question about each building. “You will get a passport, and

it will have clues in it and a map from 1876. The borough was incorporated in 1876, and the buildings from back then (will be featured in the scavenger hunt),” she noted. “There will be questions for each building that you have to answer. You will need to see the building to know the answer to the question.” For example, Kehoe noted, the question might ask scavenger hunt participants to identify the date imprinted on a building’s cornerstone. Individuals, as well as local families, are encouraged to take part in the event at their own pace. Those

who do not reside in Atglen but are interested in local history are also invited to participate. “It is a walking tour, and it’s not far,” said Kehoe. The library’s scavenger hunt will be a mini version of the Town Tours and Village Walks program, which is hosted each summer by the Chester County Planning Commission. “The Chester County Planning office has been encouraging us to do that, but there is no entity that can host one. We don’t have a historical society or commission,” Kehoe said. “Local history is one of my hobbies and I (wanted to do) one.”

Helping reunite people with their lost dogs and cats is the goal of Chesco Pet Search, an all-volunteer group of lost pet recovery specialists who operate throughout Chester County. Founded by Cathy HermanHarsch about five years ago, the group has developed specific techniques to find lost pets after they have gone missing. When a dog is lost, for example, Herman-Harsch advises pet owners to not follow their first instinct to try and chase down the dog in the neighborhood. Instead, a person with a missing dog should take several immediate steps, including posting information on Facebook and other social media sites, putting out water or food in the last known place the dog was seen and contacting the local SPCA. “We are not looking for the dog per se. We lure dogs to us,” she explained. “People make the mistake of gathering people to try and find the dog, but they are actually running the dog away. I try to get (the pet owners) to slow down, make flyers, file a report or call the police and put out food and water or the dog’s favorite toy. We (use) a dog’s nose to lure them to us.” Herman-Harsch explained that dogs that escape from the house, a car or even a fenced-in yard generally run

so far and then become afraid and often circle back to where they started. “You learn a lot by experience. Every (lost) dog teaches us something,” said Herman-Harsch. “I own a professional pet care business and I am in my 18th year of that, so you learn to understand their behavior.” Social media and the internet have been particularly helpful in finding lost pets, including websites such as www.petfinder.com and the “Lost and Found Pets in Chester County PA” Facebook group. “We have several lost and found groups we post to,” she said. “Each community has their own forum, and we will post to those in the area as well.” Chesco Pet Search has many success stories. Most recently, a golden retriever named Val, who was running loose at the Parkesburg Wawa, was reunited with his owner, Taryn Fritz Walpole, who lives in Virginia with her husband, Jeff. They adopted Val from a farm in Lancaster and stopped at Wawa on the way home when the dog jumped out of their car. Thanks to a tip from a local resident who saw the dog about a half-mile west of Wawa, Val was rescued by Chesco Pet Search volunteers Kara Mast and April Kenworthy-Brade. “After we

Lost Pets from pg 2 got him home, I sat on my kitchen floor with him for two hours as he decompressed and Taryn drove up from Arlington,” said Kenworthy-Brade, noting that Val is now home with his new family and is doing very well. Chesco Pet Search is always looking for volunteers. “We get lost dogs all over from one end of Chester County to another, and a lot of times we can’t cover it all,” noted Herman-Harsch. “If I put out a call, people jump to help. We give them jobs like flyering (putting up flyers) a mile or so out of the area. Every day we don’t find (the pet), we expand again.” “It has taken us years to build this network,” she added. “We have a great community of people who help and there are a lot of finders out there. (Finding lost pets) is a science, but it works.” For more information about the organization and to view the latest information

Speaking on behalf of the organization, PABA member Rachael Doyle from Shawn Doyle Training dba New Light Learning described Dougherty as a hero. “Every day this hero toils at the Octorara Area Food Cupboard to make sure hungry people and families get fed,” said Doyle. Dougherty, a Parkesburg resident, leads the all-volunteer staff at the OAFC. “Judy heads a team of volunteers that provide healthy food for hundreds of families and individuals in need each month. Like a well-oiled machine, they unpack, sort, identify and weigh all the food items that come in,” said Doyle. “They stock the shelves and work with the clients to assure an overall positive experience. Judy also works directly with the board of directors communicating the number of clients served, the amount of food processed and the needs of the operation in general - all this with a smile on her face and love and kindness in her heart.” Fellman explained that the PABA members vote for someone they believe is deserving of the annual award. “Every year, we have the members vote on who they think helps the community and does

Amidst all the changes this year, at least one event has stayed the same. Mostly. “The big difference is we’re offering curbside unloading. There’s no need to exit their vehicle,” said Dan Henry, speaking about the Operation Christmas Child collection event that will be held from Monday, Nov. 16, to Monday, Nov. 23, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville. This is the congregation’s 12th year as a collection site. Each year, church and community members have typically dropped off about 2,000 shoebox-type containers filled with gifts of toys and hygiene items for children. “That’s over 20,000 boxes,” Henry said. “We’re excited at Middle Octorara because we have a new pastor (John Barlow), and his wife, (Kim), has been involved with Operation Christmas Child for many years. is glad to support the program. “It’s a worthwhile project. It spreads joy around the world,” Henry commented. “It also spreads the Gospel. Every child who gets a box gets an opportunity to participate in a discipleship program.” According to Samaritan’s Purse, which runs Operation Christmas Child, the shoebox gifts are distributed through local events to children who are affected by difficult circumstances. Ministry partners offer the 12-week discipleship program “The

Greatest Gift” and develop long-term, caring relationships with children and their families who choose to participate. Donors have the option to see where their gifts are delivered by signing up for the tracking service at the aforementioned website. To donate items or for more information about the Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts collection, readers may call Henry at 717-391-9947. limited to 150 players. Evaluation nights will be held on Monday, Nov. 30; Tuesday, Dec. 1; Monday, Dec. 7; and Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. each night. During the evaluation nights, the students will be sized for a jersey and asked to perform drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for competition. Firstand second-grade boys and girls play together on coed teams. Older students have separate teams for boys and girls. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, and each team will

One of the programs of Life Transforming Ministries (LTM), a local nonprofit organization, is to provide free tax preparation and filing for low- and moderate-income households, people with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Currently, LTM is seeking volunteers to help people in need with their income tax preparation. No prior tax experience is necessary, and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) certification is offered free of charge. The LTM VITA program has

been in operation since 2004, and it is a partnership-driven authorized IRS e-file provider under the oversight of the Philadelphia IRS office. “We provide IRS training and, once completed, the volunteer is free to set up a schedule which works for them,” explained Donna Laird of LTM VITA administration support. “We currently have locations in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, Pottstown, Royersford, West Chester and West Grove.” Because of COVID-19, the training process will be adapted this year. “(Volunteers) can go to a classroom if it’s not too full, and we are starting

be assigned one evening a week to practice. A number of changes have been made to meet COVID19 restrictions. “ We have divided the year into two parts,” said Shondelmyer. “We are (running the program) for 10 weeks, so each (group) will play five weeks,” she explained. Boys in grades five through eight and girls in grades six through eight, will play games on Saturdays from Jan. 9 through Feb. 6. Boys in grades one through four and girls in grades one through five, will play Saturdays from Feb. 13 to March 13. Players will be required to wear masks when not playing, and spectators, which will be limited to two per player, will be requested

to wear masks in the building. In addition, a half hour buffer has been added between games in order to clear out the building. During games, bagged snacks and bottled beverages will be handed out for participants and spectators to consume outside the building. An additional building will be open for families that have to remain at the church for multiple games. Registration for the older age group is available at https://registration.upward.org/ UPW71071. Tammy Shondelmyer, director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, wanted to make sure area children had the opportunity to take part in Upward Basketball during the fall and winter of 202021. Working together with Doug Kauffman, children’s outreach director, and other volunteers, Shondelmyer has devised a plan for the program that meets COVID-19 restrictions. “It will be a challenge,” said Shondelmyer. “There are so many parts of this to think through.” Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. Registration for the program opened on Oct. 15 and will end Thursday, Dec. 10. live webinars in December,” Laird said. “If they miss the webinar, they can rewatch it or they can (use) a training manual and work through the whole manual at home.” Volunteers must be age 18 or older and U.S. citizens. “We get volunteers (of all ages),” said Laird. “We offer times during the day, which is usually (ideal for) senior citizens; our sites are open on weekends; and we have evening hours at different sites.” “We have a great team, and they keep coming back,” Laird added. “We are mostly helping those with lower income and they usually get refunds, so they walk out of here very happy. It is very rewarding.” The pandemic is also changing how volunteers will interact with clients. “We are not doing any sit-downs. Taxpayers will come to our sites, sit in a separate area away from volunteers, fill out paperwork needed to get started and our volunteers will pick up the envelope and take it back (for review),” Laird said. “At a later time

they will prepare the taxes and then contact (the clients) by phone with questions.” Clients then have the option to go back to the site to pick up the completed return. “Every return that we do is checked by two people. They will get a second phone call (as part of the) quality review,” Laird explained. “We will go over it again and they will be told what they owe or what their refund is, and they can come back and sign. Or they can drop off their return and choose to sign through a secure transmission service.” She noted that those who do not want to visit a site at all can take part in a virtual tax preparation process. Training for volunteers will begin in December for the 2020 season. Those interested in participating as a volunteer are asked to visit w w w. c h e s t e r c o u n t y f r e e taxes.org and click on the registration link at the bottom of the page. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Parkesburg Baptist Church has placed a table of food along with bins of personal care items and cleaning supplies outside the church’s front door, located at 103 West St., Parkesburg. Those in need may take whatever they need from the table and bins, which are always available except in the case of inclement weather. “We put the table out fairly early on in the pandemic,” said the Rev. Mary Lewis, pastor. thought, ‘Since we are on the other side of town, we will put something out and see if people are interested.’” On the table, people will find items such as tuna fish, applesauce, canned fruits and vegetables and canned pasta. One bin contains items such as cereal, bread, rolls, snacks, rice and spaghetti, while the other contains toothpaste, shampoo, laundry soap and dish liquid. Initially, church members donated the items as part of the outreach, but community members soon began to contribute as well. “It has been unbelievable how much food we have gone through. It has become a community thing,” said Lewis. “When we first started there was a bit of vandalism, but some of the folks in the neighborhood, who I did not even know, helped clean it up.” Lewis noted that the food given out by the church is not a substitute for local food banks but is meant to be a supplement to their services. “We appreciate the Octorara Area Food Pantry and The POINT and everything they do, and we support both of them, but these are rough days,” she noted. “A lot of people can use the extra help.” Because the table is always outside, it is easily accessible any time of day or night. “If people are working and they can’t get to the food pantry or they may not have transportation, they can come here,” Lewis noted. “Most of the usage was at night when we first started it. Sometimes it’s hard for people to go to the food bank, (and) we’re not asking for proof that they need it.” “We have expanded,” she added. “In the summer, King’s (Sweet Corn &) Produce donated produce. One of our members has been putting out little cuttings of potted plants. (Recently) one family put out coats.” The community is invited to take part in the outreach by donating food and other items. Items that are not accepted include unwrapped food, frozen food, perishables and
